That was a great demonstration of how to replace brakes and the tear down put very simply I have two of these trx 250 for 17 years and never had a problem but might need to replace rear brakes soon now I know thanks. 😀😃
Great video! The only one I’ve found that talks about the metal “bushing” that goes inside the cover seal behind the large washer! I couldn’t figure that one out until watching this! Thank!
THANK YOU SO MUCH THIS WAS SO EASY TO UNDERSTAND. Tore my 250ex rear brake assmebly apart today and part of it sheared where the shoes were held and i wasnt sure how to put the brake shoes in but now i do!!!!! You're a life saver!!!
Thanks for this comprehensive video. I just bought a 1984 200ES with locked rear brakes, I have a 1984 200S and I thought "Oh it will be the same" to fix that...took one look at the rear on the Big Red and freaked out. This brings my anxiety back in check much more doable, the rear looks exactly like this. Thanks again!
This video really helped the rear end axle on my 2002 Honda recon 250 was sliding out of the rear end ,I just put my bearings and seals on and it fixed it
Really helpful I’m just replacing my axle bent it on some rocks but you made it super easy to understand even tho this you made this 9 yrs ago still very helpful
I'm gonna be doin the same thing to mine. You showed what tools Ima need like a slide hammer, bearing puller, C clip pliers, and a rubber dead blow hammer. Thanks
Hey im working on a brake replacement now and am having trouble getting the right side cover off i think it may be the o ring you mentioned how would i go about getting that out
You really need to try to keep the axle from budging while you are loosening those nuts. If you could possibly have someone sitting on the quad with all the brakes on , and let some air air out of the back tires so it wont roll so easily. When the quad moves at all that is where all your energy and torque is going instead of to the nut. Also If yoo have a pipe to put over the pipe wrench handle that would dramatically increase the torqe you wil be able to apply to the lock nuts. Anyway. That can be very difficult to break loose. Keep on working at it you will get it loose. Best of luck with it.
At 10:12 you are putting in, what according to OEM diagrams calls, a dust seal. In my Clymer manual it refers to it as a collar/ring seal. On mine, it has that seal you are putting in but inside of that goes a metal collar, and over that is another smaller seal. I've looked everywhere but I only see a black seal like you insert around 10:12. But what about the metal collar and seal that goes inside of it?
Hey buddy great video!!!! Went to do brake change and bearings fell out so doing it all but 1 question I see rebuild kits with 1 bearing then 2 then 4... Is there bearing on left side of axle too?
Yes. There are bearings on both sides. The one on the right side generally Will be the one that is worn out , But it is a good time to replace all your bearings since you have it apart anyway. Thank you for watching the video hope this is helpful.
In the aluminum housing? Kit has 3 bearings 2 dust seals...I know one is for the brake assembly as your video...I see another bearing on the left tire side in the swing bar .... So where is the third on right side of rear casing to the left of brake drum? Thanks for any help.
Hello greetings from Jalisco Mexico I would like to measure the bearing that apparently broke my sportrax since it brings one from a Nissan pickup, it is not one of those and also what is the measurement of the packaging of the
great video! I used it to change out my locked up brake pads but once I got it back together they were still locked up. any suggestions as to what I might have done wrong or what to check?
I would check the return spring on the arm that controls your brakes on the hub. is it returning the arm and disengaging the brake? Cable adjustments also. If that's not it remove the brake cables and if it is still locked up then it is something internal.
Question I have How do you tell when you need to change the Back brake? My 2004 250 ex seems to be running fine and in a dry area of Mountains of California.I avoid Mud and such.
The left bearings tend to way outlast the right side. You may need a specialty tool to get them out.If you pound them out from the right side be careful to not damage your differential in the process. I did,nt replace mine because they were not that bad yet. (even though I had the new bearing from the kit) Anyway. Best of luck with it.
Great video! Quick question though: isn't there another seal/o-ring on the other side as well? If so, shouldn't you do both while you have everything disassembled? Thanks in advance!
On the left side there is 2 sealed bearings that act as a seal as well. If you buy a axle bearing kit you will get 3 bearings ( 2 left and 1 right )I cant remember if the seals and o-rings came in the kit or not. I bought the rest from partzilla there are 2 seals and 1 o-ring for the axle. I also bought a new right collar. Good luck with that.
Have a friend sit on it and hold the brakes. If that doesnt work then back the wheel up against something that wont move and try it again. A little PB blaster never hurts. Best of luck with it.
Great job. There are no quality shops in my area so I already know they won't replace half of what you did. What should be a reasonable price for all of that on my 05 Recon?
All the parts for the job I did including a carb rebuild kit cost me a hundred and fifty dollars. I bought them all on Amazon. I do whatever labor I can because a mechanic is very expensive at the shop. I don't know what the parts for a recon will cost but that's what it cost for the 250 ex. good luck with that.
Yes it was a very good video and I understood everything completely perfect but what I'm saying is when I put it into first gear it goes into reverse I was wondering if I had turned the gear inside the transmission the wrong way or what's going on but I know my gears are backwards so how do I fix is there a video to show me
I recently just bought a 2001 trx250ex from a buddy and noticed a clicking noise coming from the rear when I pull/push it, I was wondering if that is the axle bearing that needs replaced. I don't know a lot about them so that may seem like a dumb question but all help would be appreciated. Thank you
If the noise is only happening while braking it probably has something to do with the brakes. I would guess that the bearings may need to be replaced if it is a 2001. The sound is probably coming from the differential. Make sure there is oil in your rear. I take pretty good care of ours but there was Muddy water in it. Good luck with that.
how long did you have your 250 before you did this cause I got mine last year and wandered how long it'd take before I'd have to replace the bearings and brakes cause I do a lot of mud and water riding , but I think that it is sealed pretty well
What did/do you use to clean up the aluminum so well? My engine has that copper color now (brownish gold) and I don't know how to make her look new again. You managed to clean that brake assembly like new. Also, GREAT video.
I don't remember but I may have sprayed with pb blaster to keep the dust down while using the wire wheel. Then spray clean with brake cleaner. ( messy job ). Anyway. Good luck with it.
Any chance you can tell us where you got the bearing kit and the brakes? Also, did I miss where you did the bearing on the other side? I'm about to do this on a 2003 and need to find parts, but the kits online don't look right. Thanks
OK, I bought an all balls bearing and seal kit from amazon, and I bought all of my Honda oem parts from partzilla.com. I did not replace the left side twin bearings ( two bearings on the left side ) because they were still good and I got lazy. lol.
Not too bad for an amatuer ! axle jam nuts have thread locking applied at factory hence they are a pig to get off. Soft hammer would be advised when removing alloy brake drum.
I just used a really small shaft flat head screwdriver ( like one for glasses) and squeezed it around the o-ring. I bought a new one because I thought it might get damaged during removal. Thanks for watching the video and Best of luck with it.
I am stuck on the collar to get the backing plate to slide off.. how did you do it? you skipped over it...I can get a small screwdriver under the lip.. seals are still good...but not enough clearance to grab it?
You have to get the rubber o-ring seal off from between the axle and collar. You may have to ruin it to get it off. The assembly will NOT come off until you remove it. then the collar should come out. If your brakes are really worn they may hang up on the drum and not come out. If its being really difficult remove the whole axle . It will slide out with the brake and drum still attatched to the axle and brake assembly. Then just knock the drum off with a hammer striking the back of the drum. You will be able to separate the brake assembly from the drum once it is off the axle. I hope this helps.
lastmoto777 thanks... so the rubber o ring is separate from the collar? .. backing plate moves easily until it gets to the collar.... I think I will try your axle suggestion...I think the collar will prevent me from knocking off the brake drum... because the backing plate will still be attached... so I am not sure that will help...so I guess the answer is to destroy the o ring and collar...let you know how it goes... thanks again for the suggestion...
lastmoto777 ... collar came off easily, once I slid the axle out... backing plate is broken ..cracked where the stationary pivot pin was cast into the alum...backing plate bearing is still good too....think I will try to JB weld it or find an used one...does the drum slide back onto the axle shoulder... guess I got to heat the drum up to get it over the shoulder on the axle.... thanks...again...
I have fixed alot of things with JB Weld over the years. That will probably work fine. There is another O Ring on the axle too. If it looks torn up this would be a good time to replace it too. Glad you are making progress with it. Good luck. The drum should just slide back on. Just lube your spines so it slides a little easier. Dont get lube in the drum or your new brake job wont work very well. haha.
lastmoto777 that o ring is in good shape.. not sure exactly where it goes...drum will not slide back on.. beat on it and it still will not go...guess I gotta freeze the axle and heat the drum...? ... anyway, grease makes your brake shoes last a long time...so why not ? LOL!.. THANKS FOR YO HELP..!
Mine were both still good so I didnt replace them. If I did though I would probably go through the differential with a bar or something steel and knock them out with a hammer.
For the life of God I can't get that bearing out! Mine broke apart like yours and I can't get that thing out. I've been penitrating oil like crazy. Heated it up and keep pounding away. I'm out of options. Any ideas before I go buy a new one?
Update, got a dremel with a reinforced cutting disc and cutt the bearing sleeve in half, then tapped a few more times and it finally popped out. Putting the new bearing in was a beast also. I had to put some grease in there after heating it with a torch and freezing the bearing.
+lastmoto777 yeah that was a days work. thank you so much for the videos. I'm not much of a mechanic, but I rebuilt the carb and changed the axel with both of your videos. the quad has been sitting for 5+ years and I got it running like a champ now thanks to your helpful videos! I'll definitely pay it forward!
Im glad the videos helped! Our Honda was not ridden or started for years either . Funny what a clean carb and a good battery will do for the Honda. lol. Anyway . Glad you got her running!
Hi I have the same problem when i press the rear break is makes an awful squeal can you give me a parts list to order off of Amazon to do what you did I don't know all the parts to order.
Question for you, I'm attempting to do the rear brakes on my 2004 250 TRX and I got the cotter pin out, but I cannot budge the bolt the cotter pin sits on, on the end of the axle, even after heating it, soaking it several times in wd40. Any ideas?
Granitestateticketing Nh An air impact gun will take that right off. It is one of the tightest nuts on the whole quad . If you dont have a impact gun try to slip a pipe over the ratchet handle for extra leverage, with the tires on the ground to keep the axle from spinning . God luck with that.
lastmoto777 thanks for the quick response. I'm a novice so I don't have an impact gun. Any idea what socket size it is, its bigger than a 19mm (my largest), so I'd like to go buy what you recommend. Thank you for posting these videos. I'm not much of a gear head so I'm using the video to teach my 11 yearold how to work on his 250.
Yes. You can press the bearing in. That's actually the better way to do it. Freezing your bearing well just make it a little easier. But you probably don't have to. Good luck with that.
+lastmoto777 yeah I have been having headache after headache with my kids recon. I can build polaris and yamaha no problems . this every time I get one part done another gives me an issue . not to mention our honda dealers know D&;#k on what they are doing ..lol
It's funny you should say that. I have the exact same situation going on here. Our local dealership is pathetic at best. That's why I work on these myself. We still have a Suzuki a Polaris and a Yamaha left. They are all far easier to work on than the Honda.
+lastmoto777 , this recon I got cheap with a 350d trade 06 250 es , fixed the es had a broken cog in the actuator, was smoking honed replaced rings, rebuilt carb. then decided because is for kids was doing brakes all around. axle bearings are fine but brake assembly caked I mean CAKED with dif fluid. 4 hours of cleaning replaced seals . got shoes on(found a trick but thanks for prior). put all back together wouldn't go completely on. then went on axle wouldn't move ... bearing bad. so another $35 later replace all that. then did your trick nope. this damn thing hates me ..lol friend has a press putting it in ..lol
I watched your video but I had a problem with mine when I went to put it in first gear It went backwards in reverse do I have the curious messed up what do I have to do to fix it
Maybe, I think I would flush it with some cheap oil now and drain it anyway. Then put the proper oil in it. Dirt will just kill the differential. Good luck with that.
well mine was filthy and I flushed it 3 times and it was fine. Having said that.... the only way to be dead sure its clean is to take it apart and make sure it's clean. If there is dirt still in there it can do alot of money worth of damage.
That is just called an axle collar . The side with the notch in it will go towards the outside, That is the spot for the smaller rubber axle seal.Good luck with it.
I have a honda 250ex the side with cable that runs to the rear end the lever that hooks to the shaft hanging out the rear end is broken what is the name of that lever ? I cant find it anywhere
IT IS CALLED A RR BRAKE ARM. this link is for an 06 www.partzilla.com/product/honda/43410-HM8-000?ref=d49bc4a756b4f5b9969d62f8a588c6203ddb560f Good luck with it.
Yeah. I lost about five sections of video when I was making that UA-cam video. That was one of them. Sorry about that. There is pliers made specifically to take that ring out. But if you don't have them you can still get it out it's just harder. Just pry the one side out of its groove. And stick a skinny screwdriver behind it so it can't go back in its groove and just work your way around then pull it up with pliers after you get it about halfway around it will come out. It's a strong ring. So it's probably going to take a couple of attempts. Anyway. Good luck with that.
That was a great demonstration of how to replace brakes and the tear down put very simply I have two of these trx 250 for 17 years and never had a problem but might need to replace rear brakes soon now I know thanks. 😀😃

Just the video I needed. I wish every how to repair video was this comprehensible.
Thanks, Glad it helped.

Hi. I have honda atv like yours. And the same problem. My one mud inside brakes. And watching your video will help me to make job easier .
I'm gonna be doin the same thing to mine. You showed what tools Ima need like a slide hammer, bearing puller, C clip pliers, and a rubber dead blow hammer. Thanks
You are brilliant mate. thanks.
Thanks. I am glad the video was helpful
Thanks man! Good detailed video! I think I looked at it 6 or 7 time while pulling mine apart.
Great video! Helped me get through my project! Thank you!
Wonderful job very helpful just wish u would have showed u replacing the 2 bearings on the other side of the axle
This helped a lot! Thank you!
Hey im working on a brake replacement now and am having trouble getting the right side cover off i think it may be the o ring you mentioned how would i go about getting that out

thank you so much for making this video. I've had to do this 3 times on my 250. lol
Glad the video helped. and yeah. If you ride it hard you will get to work on it once in a while.lol.
Thank you very much! Great detailed video.
you are welcome. I am glad the video was helpful.
Can you change the rear left side bearing whitout having to remove the axle and disassemble the braking system?
Help me please, The hose that is connected to the brake housing, In which section of the engine is it connected? And What liquid apply to the top?
Hey buddy great video!!!! Went to do brake change and bearings fell out so doing it all but 1 question I see rebuild kits with 1 bearing then 2 then 4... Is there bearing on left side of axle too?

Pulling axle off tomorrow but the left side rear bearing is it on axle as well or on the outside of the arm ?
The bearings will be in swing arm mounted in the housing. You’ll see when you pull the axle out. Best of luck with it!
In the aluminum housing? Kit has 3 bearings 2 dust seals...I know one is for the brake assembly as your video...I see another bearing on the left tire side in the swing bar .... So where is the third on right side of rear casing to the left of brake drum? Thanks for any help.
very good video excellent content! thank you

Question I have How do you tell when you need to change the Back brake? My 2004 250 ex seems to be running fine and in a dry area of Mountains of California.I avoid Mud and such.
Got a 06 honda recon I need to do, breaks, flush, bearings and seals
Is the left side bearing hard to do? It's weird that the axle looks solid yet it definitely is a differential.
Hey could you just tell me how many total parts came in your kit it would be greatly appreciated
Great video! Quick question though: isn't there another seal/o-ring on the other side as well? If so, shouldn't you do both while you have everything disassembled? Thanks in advance!

So simple vid awesome
Thanks a lot!! You saved me!
How did you keep axle from spinning when taking off locknut and nut??
Have a friend sit on it and hold the brakes. If that doesnt work then back the wheel up against something that wont move and try it again. A little PB blaster never hurts. Best of luck with it.

Good video where u get your parts from
partzilla , ebay or amazon. Thanks, and best of luck with it.
can you show me the link where to find the bearing kit and seal kit and brake
Nice informative video! Where did you find the rebuild kit?
Thanks
I used Partzilla.com for OEM parts. Some parts will be available on Amazon though.Good luck with it.

Looking for a video on how to replace front brake calipers? 2005 350 Honda rancher fs
Thank you for demonstration, saved me a lot of money !
Your'e welcome. Glad it helped.
How did you get that collar off brake assembly???? Please help
Make sure you have all the rubber seals off. It will budge but not come off otherwise.
I have the bolts removed off the cover. Does that mean I have to crack open and loosen the cover before I get the nuts off
Thank you!!
How much does a job like this cost?
how would I change the pinion and spider on it
Great video, I can’t understand all the thumbs down from someone trying to help you. Oh well
Thanks John. I don't worry about the negative people. If I help even 1 person it was worth making the video. I am glad the video was helpful to you.
lastmoto777 yes sir, going to fix my brakes today with your video
Thanks for the video great help.
This quad dosnt have a clutch correct?
All the bearings good in the differential?
what are the torque specs on the housing?
my bearing doesn't go all the way down. it stops where the c-clamp is at. I don't even have space for the rubber seal.
how long did you have your 250 before you did this cause I got mine last year and wandered how long it'd take before I'd have to replace the bearings and brakes cause I do a lot of mud and water riding , but I think that it is sealed pretty well
Ours was like 12 years old when we did this. The Hondas are pretty tough. You won't have to do that for a long time .
Quick question, I am having some trouble finding parts for my 3 wheeler. Whats your source for all the new parts in this video?
I have been using partzilla.com for parts, Good luck with the 3 wheeler.
What did/do you use to clean up the aluminum so well? My engine has that copper color now (brownish gold) and I don't know how to make her look new again. You managed to clean that brake assembly like new.
Also, GREAT video.
LOL Well. I hate to say it, but I used a wire wheel on an electric drill. A little harsh, but It does work.
Really? Wow... so no chemicals at all? You just physically scrubbed it out with a wire brush, dry?
Thanks again buddy. Subscribed.
I don't remember but I may have sprayed with pb blaster to keep the dust down while using the wire wheel. Then spray clean with brake cleaner. ( messy job ). Anyway. Good luck with it.
lastmoto777 I actually tried some Simple Green with a wire brush and it worked great. Looks new. Thanks again.
Awesome. I will have to remember the Simple Green trick. We always have that around for the quads. Thanks !

@@lastmoto777 thanks...unfortunately that didn't work...just bent it.

Update, got a dremel with a reinforced cutting disc and cutt the bearing sleeve in half, then tapped a few more times and it finally popped out. Putting the new bearing in was a beast also. I had to put some grease in there after heating it with a torch and freezing the bearing.
Im glad you got it out. I know you have to fight with it to get it out.The dremel was a good idea! Glad you got it.
Granitestateticketing NhYou will need a 1 1/16 " socket or a 27mm socket. They will both work.
Well seems my bearing on the housing is bad, I knocked it out, and before I put a new one in, can I press it instead of heating and freezing it?
4 hours of cleaning replaced seals . got shoes on(found a trick but thanks for prior). put all back together wouldn't go completely on. then went on axle wouldn't move
... bearing bad. so another $35 later replace all that. then did your trick nope. this damn thing hates me ..lol friend has a press putting it in ..lol
+Frank Tambone Jr sorry traded the rear for the recon
What kinda oil did you put in?
I can't put rear end in because shock won't push in far enough. any ideas?
Try a floor jack? Very gently! Or remove the lower shock bolt.
great video, thanks alot.
Thank you verry good viedo to the t
Thanks. I am glad the video was helpful.
Great video!
Mine was the same way we had to pound the livening crap out of the double bearings and their was nothing left.
Good no nonsense vid
I watched your video but I had a problem with mine when I went to put it in first gear It went backwards in reverse do I have the curious messed up what do I have to do to fix it
Gears not curious
👍🏼
How do you take the arm off on 2:37
Pull or pry it off with a screwdriver ( remove the mounting bolt first.)
Okay I have no idea what I did but it's fixed lmao thank you moto
Cool.... Now the fun part. You can actually go riding. You fixed alot of stuff so maybe she will be good for a while....Best of luck with it.
i am looking for the kit for a 1999 honda recon 250
Defiance Mob me to
so you didnt change the other bearing, i understand why its so hard to get out
the seal on the left side of my axle came out so I assume dirt and shit is in there now right?
Maybe, I think I would flush it with some cheap oil now and drain it anyway. Then put the proper oil in it. Dirt will just kill the differential. Good luck with that.
+lastmoto777 so you don't think its worth taking apart?
well mine was filthy and I flushed it 3 times and it was fine. Having said that.... the only way to be dead sure its clean is to take it apart and make sure it's clean. If there is dirt still in there it can do alot of money worth of damage.
Yeah ill just take it apart, Thanks for the help!
what else did you put in after the seal..what's that shiny aluminum ring
That is just called an axle collar . The side with the notch in it will go towards the outside, That is the spot for the smaller rubber axle seal.Good luck with it.
I took mine apart and there is no axle collar. Where can I order one? Thanks
I have a honda 250ex the side with cable that runs to the rear end the lever that hooks to the shaft hanging out the rear end is broken what is the name of that lever ? I cant find it anywhere
IT IS CALLED A RR BRAKE ARM. this link is for an 06

lastmoto777 thanks for your help
Nice vid
My back breakes has not been working for last 10 years. I don'æt think I will vfixz them any time soon. Front ones still going strong ;D 2004 model
what bearing and seal kit did u buy
I ended up buying the "All Balls" kit from Amazon. It will come with bearings and seals you need.. Good luck with that.
How do I remove my axle shaft off my 420 Honda
Okay you didn't show how to remove and reinstall the damper ring on brake drum, this is where I am having an issue
Nice
Lol now I can’t get the drum separated from the aluminum shell. Nothing ever goes right. Time to spend 500 on a whole new assembly
KNIFERNICK 101 use a grinder to remove the top of the bolt then bore the rest of it out or you could try using Irwin bolt grips
need to get you a shop press
