It was so cool to see you in the Mr. Beast video Dan! I was shocked to see you there haha, a pleasant surprise! and awesome history in NC I was not aware of, thank you for sharing!
I did my masters thesis on the geology of the reed gold mine. I spent so many, many days tromping around here over the course of a couple years, mapping everything to develop a model for the formation of the deposit.
Then you should know Or, have known Sam Phifer. I worked along with him on occasions. Sam was instrumental in helping State of North Carolina to open Reeds mine park after state acquired Reeds mine from Davis family.
Carolina, the home of America's First Gold Rush. I'm in Union and Mecklenburg counties. My people are from Cabarrus and Stanly counties. These are my "Gold Stomping Grounds". Earlier this year I was gathering up rock samples where the Rudisill Gold Mine pump house shaft once stood. The shaft is sealed with a concrete pad, but there's samples to be had still. And it's several hundred yards from Irwin Creek. Another of my playgrounds! Haile Gold Mine area in South Carolina is where I sluice in creeks too. There's actually hundreds of old gold mine sites all around me. Several I've been in. Several more, I'll be in this coming year. Smart gold mine, and Secrest gold mine just 15 miles from me. They are sealed now, but plenty of rocks to bust still. Rocky river, and dozens of gold bearing creeks.
Dan. Thank you so much for coming to North Carolina and documenting where USA's first, original Gold Rush took place! You have come a long way from when I first started following you. Keep up the great work! Can't wait for your return to the great state of North Carolina! Check out Uhwarrie National Forest next. Loads of gold found there too!
FANTASTIC 🎉 Just seen the MrBeast video, your in with the big boys now Dan. What a fantastic mine to visit, I wish the gold panning was better here in the UK. I will be sure to buy some of your pay dirt as a nice treat for myself or even a nice slab of your beautiful Ocean Picture Stone. And please can you find out if PioneerPauly is ticklish
When I was visiting my daughter several years ago, we visited Reed Mine and panned for gold ourselves in the sluice boxes. But of course, we didn't find anything. The tour was very interesting, and we enjoyed our visit. Thank you for sharing your experience there.
As a resident of South Carolina, it makes me so happy that you are nearby, exploring Carolina Gold. I noticed a display behind you in one shot where they showed a bunch of coins minted from our gold - Charlotte had a US mint for a while, because so much gold was found here.
What a wonderful tour! Fascinating. I'm originally from upstate NY, but have always loved Virginia. It's great to know more of the history! Thanks Dan!
I LOVE Reed Gold Mine, the story behind it is great, I grew up just down the road, and have been there many many times ! thank you for getting the history of US gold discovery on record here on YT once again- I have to say there's a twinge of jealousy seeing you out of the public area , with Reed Gold in your pan .
In the late ‘60’s when you visited you could pan out of the creek. They had piles of dirt and you got a pan full and went to the creek to pan it. It was just a short time until the new panning stations were being built. I didn’t find gold but a bunch of mica and they put a few flakes of gold in my mica filled bottle. I remember how nice they all were!!!
@mary-ruthflores4107 they were always really nice there , I went many times as a child, then took my kids in the 90s - I usually just hit creeks around charlotte if I wanted to play- would head to Thermal City in Marion if I wanted a full day of panning - spent time on Crowder's Creek near Kings Mountain
I’m from North Carolina I’m glad you like it and was able to find some gold. Congrats on being in a MrBeast video I hope it brings a lot of good things to this channel.
Thanks so much for the tour, Dan! You are always so respectful when you visit... anywhere! I'd bet Jason would love a close look at that old school shaker table !
I live in the nearby big city. Been there a few times. Good times! 👍 My understanding is Mr Reed used the first 17 pounder to prop open the front door behind the screen door. 😅 He was a simple farmer and had no idea what he had until after the cheat bought it off him.
Wow Dan! My uncle and aunt owned several mountains and homes in NC! Yellow Creek ran right in front of the original homestead on their first property! Other than the undescribable scenery, I sat on the cabin's front porch at night. Guess what I saw that is no longer here in the south? (T Y bug zappers). Across the road was another mountain and the fireflies were so numerous that it looked like a million diamonds flashing on the side of it. It took my breath away..... Anyway, I sat in several creeks around there and knew nothing about panning then. The thought never crossed my mind. However, I have 3 jars full of beautiful rocks I found in the NC creeks! It's been in my kitchen window since 1999. Maybe I should look at them....? Thank you so much for the history and tours of an incredible place. To see the gold in your second pan was unbelievable! But, you know where to find it! I cannot wait to see the next part! Hope you find a 10 pound nugget! I'll help you tote it back home..... We can discuss details later.... 😂 Blessings from Alabama ❤️
Welcome to my home state Dan, I’m thrilled that you are here. I hope you have a great time and enjoy some southern hospitality! Hope you find lots of gold!
Welcome to NC. I’m just 38 miles NW of Reeds Gold Mine. I’ve been by it many times on the way to Myrtle Beach but never been there. Thanks for the tour. I plan to visit someday. So much great history there. I’m just beginning to pan the creek on my property. Lots of quartz and black sand here. The creek is down to bedrock in most spots. Your videos have been motivating me!
The gold in that creek is incredible, sometimes it’s a bit yellow and sometimes very mercury covered. Very happy to see someone from out west coming to the east coast
Great video as usual Dan. I was born in Charters Towers and m y grandparents lived in Charters Towers and the Venus Battery was around 1 klm down the road. We used to go explore the Battery in the early 60's when it was still completely left open. It was left in operational condition and every now and then would be fired up to crush some ore. When that happened, we sometimes would go down and watch it all in operation and we were never stopped when we would do that. Each area we went to, anyone working there would explain what that part of the machinery was doing. They were great days back then and something our children won't get the chance of having the freedom we had back then. It is now a tourist attraction and all fenced off. Now i would have to pay to visit it during its open hours and wouldnt be allowed to be climbing over stuff like we used to. On one of those early visits we came across a large quantity of mercury in large glass bottles. Of course with us being kids, we attempted to take one home. That didn't work out well, as we were still pre teens and it was heavy. We ended up leaving it hidden at the base of a tree still along way from home. 😅
Dan, I knew Carolina's gold history ,but never researched it, so you really enlightened me. I'm from New Jersey upper pine barrens region, and travelled south through the Carolinas to Florida a number of times. We had smelting and stamping mills over over the State, unfortunately it wasn't gold, it was iron ore. Fortunately, they supplied ore for Guns and ammo as well as Fulton's steam engines and the Revolution, with all respect for you modern Canadians, many whose ancestors were Loyalists. I now live in Ferndale, WA , only a couple of minutes away from Jason's family business. Too bad I missed that mine area, so exciting. Thanks for sharing, Cheers, Frederick "Rik" Spector
Hey Dan, I absolutely loved this video! You visiting this place, showing us around and telling all the history about it. Would love to see more of you visiting these historic places!
Wow, what a crazy clash of worlds for me. Dan, your videos were the first I had watched to learn about these exact fields. Because I own property on a stream 2 miles from Reed. And now you were here doing a video! How awesome!
Thank you for doing this Video in My Home State! I live here at the Beach in NC and have always wanted to see someone do a Video of Reed Goldmine. As a Graduate of UNCW Geology Dept. I'm proud to say "You do a Great Job with your Videos! Keep up the Good Work Dan!" P.S. I have ordered gold from your website and bought a T-shirt I still where today!
Awesome presentation.I was for the entire video on the edge of my seat and I don't get often so interested as to attentively pay attention for a half hour video. This one held my attention and while I've lived in USA all my life but someone from BC, Canada told me that this fabulous Reed Gold Mine was in a neighboring state to the East.Furthermore, took me on a tour of it.Thanks
It was great seeing you on mrbeast's video as my kids were watching it. I made sure to have them rewind so I could point you out!! .... and the best thing, they knew who you were from watching your videos with me!
Gold deposits ranged from Western North Carolina, through Western South Carolina, and into North Georgia. Large deposits were found near Dahlonega Georgia. So much gold was found that the federal government opened mints in 1838 in Charlotte and Dahlonega to mint gold coins in denominations of $1 to $5. The Dahlonega coins had a D mintmark and the Charlotte coins a C mintmark. Both mints closed in 1861 shortly after the start of the civil war. The D mintmark was later used, beginning in 1906, at the Denver mint. There were also private mint coins from NC and GA minted in the 1830s through the 1850s.
Great overview of the mine and gold extraction techniques. Thanks for the visit there, for all the years I had lived in Virginia and NC, I had never heard this history. 1799!!!
History is so cool, so sad that it had to stop operating. But aside from that, such an amazing opportunity to have a tour of the entire place, and so nice of you for sharing the experience with us. Keep up the good work Dan! 🎉❤
Hope enjoyed your visit to North Carolina MY HOME STATE We have something for almost any one. I have been Panning for gold today at Lucky Strike gold mine about two hours west of the Reed mine. Have never been to the Reed Mine yet but after watching your video a visit will happen in the spring. Always look forward to your videos they are entertaining and I have learned quite a lot watching them. George
That was enjoyable. I was born in Winston-Salem and had no idea. We moved to California in 1949 (49'ers :-) ) Had family move to the Carolinas to retire from Indiana.
Probably one of the best videos you made in my opinion. I love most of the adventures you go on. But this one is so informative. Thanks Dan for doing this on a constant basis!!
I'll be watching Jason's 12th installment of opening his mine after this! Love watching and learning from many of y'all, and may be doing a visit to Wisconsin, and try for some of that flour gold! 😂
The Museum of Mining at Colorado Springs, CO has a complete working 10 or 20 stamp mill they run at least once each year. I was there in July of 2007 and was too early to see it run.
Wow , Mr Hurd. Hope you enjoyed a visit to the East Coast of the States. It is beautiful around here, lots of history too, not only colonial history but indigenous history . Welcome , I hope you had fun.
I am from one of the original families that lived on meadow creek. I have three grandfathers buried there and I am 4th generation prospector. I know those creeks very well. Have family on phoenix land. Give me a shout. And I know Larry very well at Reeds. If you would have panned that bedrock at bridge… well your outcome could have been picked up out of pan. Cheers!
Cool. I live in Nevada County California and have done a bit of panning and detecting. It's a lot of fun as well as kinda relaxing.🤔 We had our gold rush as well in the 1850's.
We had a big lode discovered local here at Gold Hill Oregon, thought it was 10 lbs or so. Creeks in area were good for 8-10 oz a day ( 200 $ @ 20 oz) on the surface waiting to be picked up, unreal. The Indians would come out of the woods with sacks of gold, they were followed as it was sacred to them. Great job as usual.
So, it's nice to see you nice and relaxed under ground,, I heard your voice shake only when seeing the size of the seams🤣🤣👍 Iv learned you do t lime being under ground,,,, a.d it seems as thow it's not being underground,, it's the old mines that your not so sure about🤔🤔 not old mines all together,,, buy yeah hey Dan, you where under ground and didn't feel a certain way🤔🤔👍 love your videos, always been into rocks and stuff, central Pennsylvania has lots of Geo, lime stone caves, coal mines, iron, such as Cornwall furnaces, but IV found so.much stuff when in my 20's, like 25 years ago, but pyrites a d quartz iron stained quartz vogs all over, I was young, collecting fossils of ferns and stuff,,, if I knew then what I know now, I'd have been panni g the creeks in the coal.mine areas,, the over order piles created to get to the coal,,,, sadly but not👍 DCNR, has come in a d reclaimed all to old abandoned mine site so it's all reclaimed and no longer free to explore,,, but I'm.glad I got to exore it qhaie it was possible, sad for me for be no longer but good for earth it's been reclaimed and reforested
This was very cool, Mr. Dan. What is really cool is that you're only about 2 hours from me. I live in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. The world that we live in has grown so small compared to 100 years ago!
Welcome to North Carolina! Love this video because it’s so close to my home! You are a real character Dan! I will be visiting this site someday soon! I’ve heard of it but had no idea it was so interesting. Really enjoy your videos up north too! Thank you!
I was fortunate enough to visit the Reed mine with my family. The panning shed wasn't open yet, still too cold. May have to go back when the stamp mill is running. Thanks for the video!
I used to live about an hour from the Reed gold mine… Very few people actually know that the first gold rush was there. Awesome that you did a video there. There is several creeks that were near my house that you can still pan some flour gold and some flakes out of but it’s a lot of work for minimal return.
That's not the point. Now days unless you've got capital to start a proper operation it's just another hobby. As a hobby the point is to have fun not get rich, so some fines and flakes are just fine for having a day on the creek and getting exercise and having fun. You never know, you could find the source of those fines and flakes.
So basically you said the exact same thing that I said, just in a different way….😂 The creeks near my old house had stuff that you would go out and have a fun day on the creek. I guess some people just have to be heard 🤦🏻♂️
Heyyy welcome to my neck of the woods! I recently had to take a MSHA class to get Part 46 trained so i can do my forestry work at an active Martin Marietta mine, and we talked about this
So cool! You was in my neck of the woods. I live about 10 to 15 minutes from Reed Gold Mine. Would have been nice to know you was there to meet you in person. I do know that if everyone knew you was there that it probably would have ruined your experience and enjoyment of visiting Reed Gold Mine. Awesome video and can't wait to see your other video of your panning at Reed Gold Mine.
We have a small stamp mill in the town I live in here in Australia that is still in working condition and I can tell you they make a mountain of noise. Anyone working in the near vicinity would have been deaf in later years for sure. I have several stamp hammer heads at home that I found deep in the bush of a creek that had a mine operating in the 1880's. The stamp mill was powered by a big water wheel that was dismantled and re-erected in a park in a nearby town. The bush has reclaimed much of the mine site and you would not know it was there if you were not looking for the signs.
Great video! I've ben living in NC for 21 years now and still haven't made it to the Reed Mine. But when I do get to go, I will go armed with the knowledge that you provided in this video. Thanks!
Reed is a great historic site, and everyone needs to visit at least once. You may want to check out Thermal City Gold Mine near Marion . Pan for gold, run the trommel , and camp overnight. Super affordable !
Hey Dan, I had no idea there was/is gold in that area. In grade school in Calif. ( In the nineteen fifties ) we learned about sutter's Mill being the big discovery of gold in the USA. Of course gold has been found in other areas since. Thank you for the new video . Take care
It was so cool to see you in the Mr. Beast video Dan! I was shocked to see you there haha, a pleasant surprise! and awesome history in NC I was not aware of, thank you for sharing!
MAN I did not expect to see Dan in a Mr. Beast video. That's so cool. :)
I did my masters thesis on the geology of the reed gold mine. I spent so many, many days tromping around here over the course of a couple years, mapping everything to develop a model for the formation of the deposit.
Is there anyplace one could read your thesis?
Anyplace to read your thesis?
@romansauce17 it's on researchgate for free, titled "Geological setting of the Reed Gold Mine, North Carolina"

@randythomas3478 I didn't get a chance to meet him unfortunately, but he's a hero--the Reed is an incredible public resource.

And please can you find out if PioneerPauly is ticklish

ikr what a kindhearted soul♥
Good to see MrBeast thanked Dan for helping out. Oh wait...
Thanks so much for the tour, Dan! You are always so respectful when you visit... anywhere!
I'd bet Jason would love a close look at that old school shaker table !
I live in the nearby big city. Been there a few times. Good times! 👍
My understanding is Mr Reed used the first 17 pounder to prop open the front door behind the screen door. 😅 He was a simple farmer and had no idea what he had until after the cheat bought it off him.

Your love for prospecting and geology comes through on your tour. I hope your students appreciated your enthusiasm!
You are an excellent reporter. Well spoken and informed.
Great video Dan 👍 The historical values of these old Gold mines is are as valuable as the gold itself. Thanks for taking us along.
Hey Dan, I absolutely loved this video! You visiting this place, showing us around and telling all the history about it. Would love to see more of you visiting these historic places!

Awesome! That's my neck of the woods, I live ~10 minutes from the mine. We find gold everywhere around here, panning creeks and such.
I lived close to that area for several decades, not sure if it was mentioned but the original nugget was used as a door stop.
Great overview of the mine and gold extraction techniques. Thanks for the visit there, for all the years I had lived in Virginia and NC, I had never heard this history. 1799!!!
Absolutely amazing. A great teacher! Keeping folks captivated!
Fantastic video: History, The workings of the mine the whole dam story. "Thank you Dan, you're the man ". Regards South Africa 🇿🇦.
History is so cool, so sad that it had to stop operating. But aside from that, such an amazing opportunity to have a tour of the entire place, and so nice of you for sharing the experience with us.
Keep up the good work Dan! 🎉❤
I have been on a Dan Hurd bender for like the last week. I love your channel and your energy. I hope your well friend.
Dan... This was an Awesome Video of our State History. I have wanted to travel to this site for a while, Now you have just given me more fuel to GO.
Man that panned gold was fresh...it looked sharp and jaggedly...mega!
I live in North Carolina and this is my new favert video, grate job Dan.
You would have been my favourite school teacher…. The way you lay down the story for everyone to understand and get into is great….
Hope enjoyed your visit to North Carolina MY HOME STATE We have something for almost any one. I have been Panning for gold today at Lucky Strike gold mine about two hours west of the Reed mine. Love watching and learning from many of y'all, and may be doing a visit to Wisconsin, and try for some of that flour gold! 😂
Was happily surprised to see the MrBeast cameo!
The Museum of Mining at Colorado Springs, CO has a complete working 10 or 20 stamp mill they run at least once each year. I was there in July of 2007 and was too early to see it run.
Dan... I just saw you in a freaking Mr. Beast video, lol. Lets go Dan!!
Wow , Mr Hurd. Hope you enjoyed a visit to the East Coast of the States. It is beautiful around here, lots of history too, not only colonial history but indigenous history . Welcome , I hope you had fun.
Wow, Dan was right in our backyard! Nice video of Reed’s!
That was a very nice place, thanks for sharing. Glad to you found some Gold there.
Two of my favorite topics North American History and gold
MrBeast was not a name i ever expected to come up on this channel lol. This place looks amazing so much history.
Great video Dan. Thanks for the tour!!
Just popped over from the MrBeast video - what a shock seeing you!

The Indians would come out of the woods with sacks of gold, they were followed as it was sacred to them. Great job as usual.
Another great video Mr Hurd! Awesome visit and info!
Excellent video. Not the usual Dan Hurd prospecting but wonderful none the less
The float in the valley off reed mine would be spectacular to go through
This was very cool, Mr.
So cool!!!! I live a few miles away from Reeds. Glad you shared its cool history
Thats so awesome you got ro document being there. I love seeing the history of the state I grew up in.
Thanks for showing some of the great things North Carolina has to offer.
What a beautiful area at the historic mine. Thank you for sharing this adventure!!!
Great tour great information thanks for your time and dialog.
Saw you in Jasons videos, watched my first Dan vid all the way to the end, deserved the sub!
I’m from N.C and toured reed goldmine when I was a kid . Very cool to see on your channel ❤
always love your historic, documentary style videos Dan.
Great experience, thanks for taking us along.
Class field trip of mine 35 years ago lol thanks for the walk down memory lane have to say it looks the same mostly. so cool.

Enjoyed the video. My wife and I were in that area “checking it out” back in October.
Awesome video and historical information! TY! It is looking like a trip to Jefferson, NC is in order this spring to see family in the mountains! 😁
I have been following you for quite some time. And your friends and adventures. Good to see you local. I live 4 mi through the woods.
A great slice of Americana, thanx for sharing Dan.
I was so happy to see you featured in a Mr.Beast video, congratulations!
I live in NC,not too far from the Reed Gold Mine. Hate that I missed y'all, but cool that you were in my home state!!!!
This was fantastic, would love to see more tours regarding the history of gold deposits/extraction.
You are such a fantastic teacher! Thank you. 😊
Hey Dan,
I had no idea there was/is gold in that area.
In grade school in Calif. ( In the nineteen fifties ) we learned about sutter's Mill being the big discovery of gold in the USA.
Of course gold has been found in other areas since.
Thank you for the new video .
Take care
The best part of this video, you filmed it on my birthday. That's cool.
There's a village called Gold Hill in Rowan County also a Silver Valley in Davidson County. Gold and silver was found at both places
