it is, by far, one of the funniest bits in tv history. I remember watching the show as a kid and loved it, watching the elephant story cracks me up, every time.
I loved Tim Conway. I loved how Harvey Korman was physically incapable of getting through a Conway sketch without laughing. The dentist sketch was like that too. If Conway was involved more than likely someone else would have to leave the scene.
That was one of the best Classics on T.V. history. I can see that sketch a thousand times and I steel laugh like the first time. Please bring back that good T.V.
I watch that blooper every few months when I need a spiritual lift. It is without a doubt one of the funniest moments in TV history and the reaction of the cast to Vickie's comment is totally priceless.
Comedy pieces like this make me wish I had been old enough to know when it aired. Some of the sketches of the past, before my time, are some of the funniest things I've ever seen.
I saw this when it aired the first time. It was the first time I ever heard a 'dirty word' on TV. I was positive Dick Van Dyke was trying NOT to pee in his pants even at that young age. That act will forever be one of the funniest if not THE funniest moments in the history of film.
No, Tim Conway doing that is what made the show legendary. His line about the Siamese elephants sneezing in that sketch was one of the funniest things ever on TV.
What Viki said is the REAL punch line to the Elephant story. Tim built up SO MUCH tension with the story. If Viki had said nothing, I think the whole sketch would have flopped. What Viki said was totally inspired!
Why does the title refer to this as an "infamous" blooper? That was one of the most memorable moments ever, in a good way. People love it; it's one of the most hilarious moments ever. There was no controversy about it. Just because they bleeped a word does that make it "infamous"? Just from the comments here, it's obvious people LOVE it. Infamous is a bad choice of words.
Thinking about it, Tim did the perfect set up for Vicki's comment. That long, convoluted elephant story and Burnett's reaction to it just created the situation that Vicki's character, Mama, needed to add one of the greatest punchlines in comedy.
The clip was aired on, as Vicki says here, "Dick Clark's Bloopers and Practical Jokes". But it also aired on a Carol Burnett retrospective show, which included several outtakes.
I remember very vividly when the episode aired. Looking at the footage now, they did some very clever editing, because there were no bleeps or bleep-ables. I recall laughing myself to tears when Tim did the line about the elephants not being able to trumpet, just say "norkey".
This group on this show was absolutely the BEST thing on TV. We never see anything funny like this any more. Everything now is filled with sex, and is filthy and not funny. I just love going over all these videos on youtube from the Carol Burnett Show. Much better than watching TV.
One of the funniest scenes in television EVER. Tim Conway was genius at improv. To watch other professionals laugh at his stuff meant even more. The "*thnnnort* Juslikedat." thing STILL kills me, and it has been a loooooooooong time since it first airs. It's right up there with Betty Whyte's Herring Circus story, and Niles Craine's Ironing His Pants sketch (from Fraiser).
I just looked up the sketch their talking about and it's not "BLEEPED" here on youtube. But i don't remember.........was it bleeped on the television show.
Carol is FANTASTIC!!!! As talented as Vicki is Carol is far more talented and remember Vickie owes a great deal to carol. Loved Carol as Eunice! LOL In fact, during their skits Eunice always upstaged Mama.
I'm sirry Vicki, one other classic that's being circulated on UA-cam is a clip from Eunice, the one where you asked Aunice id it was her time of month, and was she "riddin the cotton poney"
why is this so "infamous" as an old fart i know when this aired two people could not be in the same bed you only saw bras on bodice forms and she was not knocked up she was with child
You mean she went off script? After a rehearsal? Wow. I never watched the Carol Burnett show all those years. It was always so poorly written, it looked like they were making it up as it went along with forced laughter.
The Carol Burnett Show was the last of the greatest variety shows on television. Fantastic cast, fantastic show! Wish it could be brought back!
That elephant sketch is STILL one of the funniest things I have seen in my life, and Vicki's line was killer! Wonderful!!!
Tim was absoutely at the top of his game during that period but Vicky did indeed get him good with that one!
it is, by far, one of the funniest bits in tv history.
The whole sketch is funny, but for me seeing Tim lose it was incredible!!
I've always loved Vicki Lawrence... I had a crush on her when I was about 8 years old when this show was on tv!
I loved that skit! Viki Lawrence's jab set off that explosion of laughter!
That was one of the best Classics on T.V. history. I can see that sketch a thousand times and I steel laugh like the first time. Please bring back that good T.V.
I so loved all the shows and many times, I had tears in my own eyes from laughing. Thanks to all of you for such good times.
Vicki looks great! And such a treat to hear from one that was there and
to relate to us here...fun! thanks for sharing!
RIP, Harvey and Tim, the God of improvisation.
I remember when I first watched that sketch I laughed so hard I cried. That show was hilarious!
I still go back to that blooper when I need a good laugh!
I watch that blooper every few months when I need a spiritual lift. It is without a doubt one of the funniest moments in TV history and the reaction of the cast to Vickie's comment is totally priceless.
Vickie Lawrence is one of my favorite Canadians. She absolutely nailed it that time. Good on you, Momma!
Comedy pieces like this make me wish I had been old enough to know when it aired. Some of the sketches of the past, before my time, are some of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Vicki was brilliant as Mama. Her witty comebacks were the best.
To this day it is still one of the funniest things. I still crack up watching it.
I once saw Carrol Burnett tell how "Tim Conway would do rehearsals perfectly, but then when the cameras were on, it was his job to destroy us all!"
I saw this when it aired the first time. It was the first time I ever heard a 'dirty word' on TV.
I was positive Dick Van Dyke was trying NOT to pee in his pants even at that young age.

A Classic Moment in the Carol Burnett Annuls of TV......STILL AMAZINGLY HILARIOUS!! Cheers All
Calling it a blooper is a bit of a misnomer. The bomb Vicki dropped was quite deliberate. And one of the funniest moments in TV history.
they were joined at the trunks. they couldnt make the sounds the other ones could they could only go...*snarf*
Keep thinking how interesting it might have been to see Vicki Lawrence act with Vivian Vance, two great comic supports in television history.
Oh my God that elephant story was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Man The Carol Burnett Show was so funny
She was terrific on CB and great on Momma's Family.
Tim Conway owned that stage until Vicki said that one line
A Star Was Born after that
I love that she played the whole thing completely straight in character.
Mama (Vicki) not only broke the 4th wall, she demolished it.
Vicky, sweetheart, that wasn't a blooper, that was a classic.
Miss The Carol Burnett Show!
Wish i could meet you and the cast,,,,,,,,,,,extremely great performances
We ALL cheered when Vicky gave Tim his long deserved Medicine!!
Breaking the 4th wall is what made the show so good!
For those asking the blooper is all over UA-cam
Elephant story should work

Mamas Family was such an under rated show..
Thinking about it, Tim did the perfect set up for Vicki's comment. That long, convoluted elephant story and Burnett's reaction to it just created the situation that Vicki's character, Mama, needed to add one of the greatest punchlines in comedy.

You can't teach talent like that, some people have it, some people don't.
I remember very vividly when the episode aired. Looking at the footage now, they did some very clever editing, because there were no bleeps or bleep-ables. I recall laughing myself to tears when Tim did the line about the elephants not being able to trumpet, just say "norkey".
You definitely know your comedy ; I completely agree .
One of the greatest moments on television.
Best sketch ever
Those lovely and innocent days gone by when a little dirty word was still funny...
It was hilarious because it was exactly what everybody was thinking at the time!
That sketch was the funniest I have ever seen.
This group on this show was absolutely the BEST thing on TV. We never see anything funny like this any more. Everything now is filled with sex, and is filthy and not funny.
I just love going over all these videos on youtube from the Carol Burnett Show. Much better than watching TV.
That comment was Epic

Love you Miss Vicki
the best blooper ever
Brilliant sketch.
its here on youtube - the exact title is: "Carol Burnett Show outtakes - Tim Conway's Elephant Story".....enjoy! i wish i could improv like conway!
the original wasn't bleeped out
And now it is on the internet. :-D
wish they had included the blooper...i have no idea what they are talking about.
Well, except that she got her own show after that: Mama's Family for three seasons.
See "Tim Conway & the elephant" in the related videos section.
I just loved it!!!
This interview is for the archives. They never show clips of shows. One youtube search and you are there.
I agree thanks for posting
i met vicki
indeed. The elephant story itself was funny too. lol
I'm surprised this sketch has never been released in it's entirity.
thiz iz SO FREKIN FUNNI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
See Tim Conway Elephant Story
Mama definitely spanked in that blooper.
conway deserved it, he would never know when to quit.
I just looked up the sketch their talking about and it's not "BLEEPED" here on youtube. But i don't remember.........was it bleeped on the television show.
So did we.
Carol is FANTASTIC!!!! As talented as Vicki is Carol is far more talented and remember Vickie owes a great deal to carol. Loved Carol as Eunice! LOL In fact, during their skits Eunice always upstaged Mama.

It has look up Tim Conway Elephant Story
so where can we see this infamous sketch??
is this famous clip available somewhere maybe on UA-cam?
Sheryl Louise reminds me of Momma, too
ya didnt get that at all.
Right!
Link to the actual blooper: ua-cam.com/video/Yk1DOnE-0Og/v-deo.html
Nice
Momma!
Talent,not tallent. :)
why is this so "infamous" as an old fart i know when this aired
two people could not be in the same bed
you only saw bras on bodice forms
and she was not knocked up she was with child
So I watch this whole thing and NO CLIP of the scene FAIL
she talked about it... at 3:36 she tells the blooper
Yes, but show the friggin clip...good grief
For me it's in the side bar with the other clips. Think I'll go watch it now.
I have no idea what sketch they are talking about. Might have been nice if you had shown it after doing all the talking about it.
Yeah, except that, as Vicki said, it was the last season of the show, and she was never heard from again.
Carol is much older and looks much better...
You mean she went off script? After a rehearsal? Wow. I never watched the Carol Burnett show all those years. It was always so poorly written, it looked like they were making it up as it went along with forced laughter.
