I remember seeing years ago during a special where they talked about how Tim would really hold back during rehearsals, but once they were taping, his goal was to make everyone break character- especially Harvey. 🤣
Tim Conway was the greatest ad-libber in the world of comedy. Making Harvey crack up like he did so often was better than any sketch ever written in a script
@@rolfbernserke4735 A prime example is the "Dishonorable Discharge" skit. That was the first time Tim used the Mr. Tudbull accent, and Harvey lost it as soon as Tim opened his mouth.
Conway said on Carson that early on he and Harvey made a bet that when one of them managed to make the other crack up, they would pay the other $50. He then added that Harvey put 3 of his kids through school.
Technically, it WASN'T a blooper...Vicki said it was the last skit of the show (?) and she wanted to "get back" at Carol because Carol was adamant about them not laughing but she ended up laughing g more than any of them...that was vicki's "revenge" during dress rehearsal
Poor Dick was trying so hard not to pee his pants. I'm still not sure if he succeeded. It was so funny because it was Tim's job to get them, that when Vicki got him back he he rolls on the floor laughing.
Untrue. You seem to have this mythical notion that live studio audiences only existed back then. Every three-camera sitcom that has occurred since is in front of a live audience. SNL included
As many times as I see the elephant story, it cracks me up, not only because of Tim's story and gestures but the way Carol, Vicky and Dick Van Dyke are trying to hold it together.
Vicki Lawrence was amazing in how she didn't break up when she was slaying Carol with "I think somebody blew your pilot light out" and "You're playing hockey with a warped puck." Relentless.
I especially love the outtake version of this scene where Vicki adlibs "What is your problem, Eunice? Is it your time of the month or somethin'? You ridin' the cotton pony?" Of course things quickly fell to pieces after that, LOL!
She kept hitting Carol with these insults and they were all new to Carol. Playing MOMMA...a STERN, strong-willed wasp with a golden heart, allowed her to really keep in charatcer because Momma suffers fools lightly and she wouldnt laugh at this ...said Vicki in an interview a long tme ago
Vicky Lawrence is the only member of the show that never broke character. And to be around these crazy brilliant people and not break character is a Herculean feat!

The Tim Conway dentist skit has some of the best physical comedy ever done. When we saw it for the first time, in the 70s, my family laughed so hard we could hardly breathe.
She was young snd she was too "mortified" to break character. She was actually getting mad at Tim for always doing that. Her husband told her to "let him have it" during the elephant sketch

With Tim, we'll never know how these sketches were SUPPOSED to go. We only know the absolute gifts that Tim gave us. He was and will ALWAYS be the king of sketch comedy!!
This is technically true, but there were LAUGH and APPLAUSE signs for the audience. Also, if a joke got a bigger laugh at the final rehearsal than it did at the live taping, they would edit in the rehearsal take. There are a couple of skits where it’s obvious this is happening.
In the history of comedy there has never been a show that delivered more laughs per minute of airtime. What a joy it must have been to work on that set. 50 yrs later and this is still the funniest comedy show around.
I never get tired of watching these clips. Tim Conway and Harvey Korman were masters of their craft. Poor Harvey just couldn't keep it together when Tim got rolling!! lol
Harvey Korman’s inability to control his laughter is what ALWAYS and still does totally crack me up. It’s impossible for me to keep a straight face - no matter how depressed I am - when watching the dentist skit. I know what’s coming -- yet I’m smiling so hard my face hurts.
The dentist skit is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I watched it with my best friend and literally rolling on the floor unable to breathe from laughing so hard. It's sad, and I miss comedy like this. It was an art that got lost.
@@timsullivan4687 yeah, they would record each show twice. The "Dress Rehearsal" (I think they used a different term), and a live show in front of a studio audience later in the day. They would use the first recording as a back up incase they didn't get a decent take during the live show. The cast was more inclined to pull antics like this during the live show as long as they had a clean recording from earlier.
The Mama/Eunice moment is great, but in the other taping, Vicki comes out with a "I think your dinghy sprung a leak!" followed by a knockout punch with"Is it your time of month, Eunice? You riding the Cotton Pony?" that is just classic!!
The "cotton pony" line, I had forgotten all about it! Only saw that clip once but never forgot it. Too funny. Just found a clip with that part edited in--- ua-cam.com/video/bZQxTtbNOzE/v-deo.html
Growing up in the 70s and early 80s, I lived with my grandmother. Every nite, at six or seven, we would watch this show on WTBS. Such a simple, yet wonderful time! Now at 53 years old, I enjoy watching these clips, and thinking back to all those evenings of doing my homework and watching Carol.
I’m pretty sure if I come back to watch these regularly & laugh until I’m crying- I will add years onto my life!!!! So grateful to all these talented comedians!! 👍👍👍
Tim Conway was the best of them all and the story of The Siamese Twin Elephants was my favorite skit of all time, to this day it still has me laughing out loud.
The Carol Burnett show was perhaps the greatest cast of comedy actors ever assembled. Here we are, decades later and nobody has come close. Perhaps the 1st cast of SNL are a distant 2nd place but nobody was like the Carol Burnett cast.
Amen to that! And that elephant story, even when you know what's coming, watching everybody but Vicki Lawrence fall off or over is just prime! Do you know that Vicki Lawrence was only 17 when Carol hired her for the show?

My wife and I saw Harvey Korman and Tim Conway in the 90s at a comedy show they were touring in Houston. They did the Dentist Sketch and it was every bit as funny as here. Glad we got to see them live.
So sad that todays supposed comedy is foul language, inappropriate behavior and trash. No one can not sit and watch these entertainers and not crack a laugh. It was a truly golden time.
Wow, you are so lucky. They were the best duo. I like to think they were besties off-stage too. It is obvious that everybody in the show was fond of each other but Harvey and Tim always made me smile
The Carol Burnett Show was my family's favorite comedy show to watch while I was growing up. You had to wonder though how long those sketches were actually supposed to be since they kept cracking each other up. When they made Tim Conway a regular part of the show instead of a guest was the best decision they did on the show. I still have to laugh at these skits and I feel blessed that I got to see the comedic talents of the cast and guests of the Carol Burnett Show.
I was blessed with a studio singing career that lasted six decades and started in the 60s when there were several musical variety shows. I always loved getting the call to work on Carol’s show. She was so lovely, so absolutely void of star ego, and her cast and crew just adored her and each other. I love seeing these clips.
That is so awesome!! My dream job would've been as a dancer for the shows. I was born too late but being a dance teacher is second best job I ever wanted (and have).
I'm glad to hear that story. I grew up watching Carol Burnett and I never missed an episode. Sonny and Cher came on right after. And Donny and Marie were in there somewhere too. But Carol Burnett was always my favorite show.
I love that Tim Conway always went out of his way to completely derail every sketch he was involved in by improvising. "The Dentist" and "The Elephant Story" are the 2 funniest clips I've ever watched and cry laughing every time I see them.
Conway played it straight during the dress rehearsal, which was also taped, and once he knew he had a good take in the can, went wild during the main taping.
The producer never knew what Tim was going to do. In rehearsal he would read the script correctly. But during the live show it was a free-for-all and he was always ad-libing stuff that just killed the other actors.
Tim Conway added so much stuff into the dentist sketch that Harvey had no idea was coming. Harvey left so hard he wet himself according to carol. He's doing his best to hide it if you watch him cross his legs, it is hilarious.
Does anyone think it's a coincidence that these folks all lived to such old ages??? They were full of joy and loved to laugh and there is a definite link between longevity and these qualities. They had such fun making this show and I'm certain it was the best time of their lives!
That's true, but since I posted that, I did some reading, mostly university longevity studies. And they did find a definite correlation between disposition and long life. As one of the doctors stated about the group of people he had studied, "there wasn't a grump among them". Very interesting! @@TaurusHere
Tim, showing his absolute talent, to capture the best moment to “break” Harvey every time 😅. The gold is In watching Harvey tries so hard to maintain his composure and professionalism , and failing 😂
I was lucky enough to grow up and watch this as a kid and now I can say after all these years this is arguably the best comedy variety show of all time. Those on this show were all true legends and heavyweights of comedy. Thank you Carol,Tim,Vicky,Harvey and all the special guests over those years that appeared. Simply the best!!
Vicki usually played the airheaded kid sister and other Valley Girl-type characters until Mama came along. That's when she really came into her own and became a major player on the show. The character earned Vicki her own sitcom that ran for several seasons.
porflepopnecker4376, Vicki putting three very experienced and top notch actors on the floor, or curled up on the couch with laughter didn't hurt her reputation one bit either. As Carol explained it, up to that point Vicki considered herself the "New kid" and not having enough experience to try and go after stars like Tim. But after putting Dick Vandyke and Tim Conway on the floor, and Carol curled up in the corner of the couch, Vicki realized that everybody was fair game.
Red Skelton could do an hour & a half show making your sides hurt from laughter without one cuss word. When Eddie Murphy's "Raw"came out, theaters had to have security to make sure that people didn't take the entire family to see it because of the profanity & content.
Tim Conway's timing ànd going offscript was pure genius! He wasn't playing to the audience, he was plàying his character to bust up his costar's. Pure genius to be àble to take the breath from 2 comedy legends and Dick Van Dyke! They did it all with out the F bomb.
The entire cast was unbelievable...they worked together so well. They play on each other...THERE WILL NEVER be this kind of talent in television again. I guarantee......
Carol Burnett show was my absolute FAVORITE show growing up in the 70’s…I couldn’t wait until Saturday night to watch it. RIP to the late great Tim Conway & Harvey Korman. 🙏🏾😇🙏🏾
I was in elementary school when this was on tv. It came on at 3pm and absolutely everyone I knew ran home to watch it. I would sit on the couch with my aunts and uncles, laughing our butts off. Considering everything going on at the time, nationally and in our family, we needed people like them in our lives. Thank you, Carol and friends.
That reruns. It started on a Monday night September 11, 1967, 10:00 P.M. Then later was on the Saturday night line up with All in the Family, Mash, Mary Tyler Moore, and Bob Newhart. That's when shows were good. Not like the Garbage that's on now. BTW, these shows would cause protests today by the fruit cakes of this country. Look what happened to everyday products like Aunt Jemima Pancake mix. ONE SICK society now.
Korman makes it all of five seconds in most of these before Conway makes him crack! These two were the best on the small screen in our generation. Carol and Vicki were along for the ride. This show and everything involved will NEVER be duplicated.
it is just as good today, as it was when it first went to the airwaves. you know it is good when the humor holds up years later, it is well written, and they were having fun doing it. the nice thing about this is "IT IS NOT DATED MATERIAL"
I love that I am able to rewind the part where she says “go on mamma” and rewatch their reactions over and over 😂😂 Props to all these classics in the funny biz!!!! ❤

My Mom left us in 2009, but I can still hear her crack up about the elephants right now, too... I severely miss those days....I wish I had enjoyed them more than I did...
We need more shows like this today! The Dentist and the Elephant one always make me cry laughing so hard. The quick wit of all of them was amazing. They said that Harvey actually wet himself laughing during the dentist skit because Tim Conway always did it straight in rehearsals.
I don't know if the current generation can really appreciate the absolute beauty of a show that contained incredible humor and humanity at the same time. The Carol Burnett Show has some of the most endearing and lasting humor one will ever find on network television. Conway made Harvey wet himself in the Dentist skit from trying to hold back his laughter.
I remember Carol Burnett saying Conway held back during rehearsals. Poor Harvey suffered because of it 😂
@@rolfbernserke4735 A prime example is the "Dishonorable Discharge" skit.
50 years later and the elephant story still has me cry laughing.
Isn't it the best? It cracks me up over . . . and over . . . . 🤣🤣🤣
Even though I know what he's going to say, I still end up snort-laughing!
I watched it live and now every couple of weeks. Pure comic genius but the best part is Tom holding straight face and everyone trying to not laugh
"Pppfnork"
What did the lady say at the end that made them all fall over with laughter?
We need shows like this to comeback again. Carol Burnett was the best

"You sure that little assholes through?" will always be the best blooper. 🤣
Yep! That cracked me the hell up 🤣
And then the Tim and Dick fall off the couch laughing! 😂 I can’t wait for that moment every time! 🥹
Technically, it WASN'T a blooper...Vicki said it was the last skit of the show (?) and she wanted to "get back" at Carol because Carol was adamant about them not laughing but she ended up laughing g more than any of them...that was vicki's "revenge" during dress rehearsal
One of the funniest skits ever!
Poor Dick was trying so hard not to pee his pants. I'm still not sure if he succeeded. It was so funny because it was Tim's job to get them, that when Vicki got him back he he rolls on the floor laughing.
There is nothing better than the sound of real audience laughter. You can only find on these classic shows.
Untrue. You seem to have this mythical notion that live studio audiences only existed back then. Every three-camera sitcom that has occurred since is in front of a live audience. SNL included
@@stevencramsie9172 SNL isn't funny, they need to signal to their audience when to laugh
You know that it is comedy gold when you have seen it before and are aware of what they are going to do or say and still crack up uncontrollably 😂 😂 😂
As many times as I see the elephant story, it cracks me up, not only because of Tim's story and gestures but the way Carol, Vicky and Dick Van Dyke are trying to hold it together.
Yes! I am in tears from laughing so hard.
It's definitely one that never gets old. I will never tire of anything from the Carol Burnett show!
EVERY time.
@@jacklow9611 Dick looked like he was trying to keep from peeing his pants for the entire skit. I STILL laugh until I cry!
Vicki Lawrence was amazing in how she didn't break up when she was slaying Carol with "I think somebody blew your pilot light out" and "You're playing hockey with a warped puck." Relentless.
I wonder if she was ab libbing and that's why Carol was breaking.
I especially love the outtake version of this scene where Vicki adlibs "What is your problem, Eunice? Is it your time of the month or somethin'? You ridin' the cotton pony?" Of course things quickly fell to pieces after that, LOL!
I've wondered what Harvey Korman's reactions were during that part. He was just right out of the camera shot.
No cursing, no skimpy outfits, no vulgar innuendo, just some of funniest stuff ever made for television.
The Carol Burnett Show was not only hysterical and funny, but without offensiveness and vulgarity. This was true comedy.
Pretty sure a-hole counts as vulgarity
it could also be extremely thought provoking, one of the best things ever put to the small screen
Society was generally nicer, kinder, gentler decades ago. The Burnett Show would never fly in today's Woke sociopolitical era.

The Tim Conway dentist skit has some of the best physical comedy ever done. When we saw it for the first time, in the 70s, my family laughed so hard we could hardly breathe.
@Stacey O’Brien Harvey admitted he peed his pants because he was laughing so hard in that skit, lol.
Did someone give you mouth to mouth?
My fam and I have peed so many pants watching that skit!
Same here!
Vikki always was the one that seemed to hold it together the best. What a great cast and a fun show. We miss that sort of thing in this era.
Vicki was undefeated.

@@testodude Vicki ended the elephant story with a mic drop
She was young snd she was too "mortified" to break character. She was actually getting mad at Tim for always doing that. Her husband told her to "let him have it" during the elephant sketch

With Tim, we'll never know how these sketches were SUPPOSED to go. We only know the absolute gifts that Tim gave us. He was and will ALWAYS be the king of sketch comedy!!
Pretty much anytime Tim and Harvey were in a sketch together you knew Harvey would lose it lol
Comedy without cuss words. Comedians that actually have talent. What a novel concept!!!
Lots of modern comedians don't swear. For example, check out Gabriel Iglesias.
Vicky did😅 say asshole so…..😮😊

No one nerds cuss words. Some of us just like them.
Her show' laughter WAS NEVER CANNED!!! Thank you, Carol Burnett!
There has never ever been anything like the Carol Burnett show. It was one of a kind and I sure miss this kind of comedy. This show was the best

I never get tired of watching these clips. Tim Conway and Harvey Korman were masters of their craft. Poor Harvey just couldn't keep it together when Tim got rolling!! lol
None of us could!😂
Harvey Korman, Carol Burnett and Vicki Lawrence were great comedians but Tim Conway was on another level. He and Harvey are sadly missed.
Comedic genius of all !
Harvey and Tim are one of the best comedy duos ever!!! They also kept each other laughing!!!
@@tiredofit4761 Harvey and Tim were both great individually but absolutely deadly together!
Vicki Lawrence kept it together better than anybody else
The first 3 are actually funny. I agree, Conway is not in with them. Lyle made me laugh.
Harvey Korman’s inability to control his laughter is what ALWAYS and still does totally crack me up. It’s impossible for me to keep a straight face - no matter how depressed I am - when watching the dentist skit. I know what’s coming -- yet I’m smiling so hard my face hurts.
Harvey peed himself during the dentist skit thanks to Tim :P

Agreed! It is sooooo funny!!
All we see to-day is violence, murders and destruction...sad world !
It's said that Harvey Korman laughed so hard, that he actually pee'ed himself in that dentist chair.
Back when they recorded in front of a live audience! No editing! It's the reactions of the cast that make this comedy gold!
To-day the shows are fake laughter i.e. The big bang theory...sickening !!
This was actually a dress rehearsal
What? No editing? Yes they did.

The cast for the Carol Burnett Show is absolutely priceless!!! Legends FOREVER!!!
That show had THE BEST WRITERS, THE BEST CAST, and THE BEST GUEST STARS!!! It was the complete package of comedy
The Mama/Eunice moment is great, but in the other taping, Vicki comes out with a "I think your dinghy sprung a leak!" followed by a knockout punch with"Is it your time of month, Eunice? You riding the Cotton Pony?" that is just classic!!

Such a simple, yet wonderful time! Now at 53 years old, I enjoy watching these clips, and thinking back to all those evenings of doing my homework and watching Carol.
Mommas family too.
And we watched it on a TV with rabbit ears.
I’m pretty sure if I come back to watch these regularly & laugh until I’m crying- I will add years onto my life!!!! So grateful to all these talented comedians!! 👍👍👍
Laughter doeth a man good, like a medicine.

And not one four letter word except "BEST".
I sure do miss this kind of comedy 😂 I'm old, but this stuff never gets old.
The Dresser is peak physical comedy.
Her show was one of the last of the greats.
The laughing during the live performance definitely made this show more hilarious
The Carol Burnett show was perhaps the greatest cast of comedy actors ever assembled. Here we are, decades later and nobody has come close.
Perhaps the 1st cast of SNL are a distant 2nd place but nobody was like the Carol Burnett cast.
I still enjoy watching today especially when I have "one of those days"❤

So sad that todays supposed comedy is foul language, inappropriate behavior and trash. No one can not sit and watch these entertainers and not crack a laugh. It was a truly golden time.

Wow, you are so lucky. They were the best duo. I like to think they were besties off-stage too. It is obvious that everybody in the show was fond of each other but Harvey and Tim always made me smile
Tim's elephant story had to be one of the greatest. Carol's show was always good.
Tim Conway was so hilarious! Comedians of his generation are hard to beat.

How wonderful! That must have been amazing! I would have loved it!

That's absolutely fantastic!
I have seen these clips 1000 times and I laugh hysterically every single time. This is comedy gold.
That's the thing about these. You can watch them over and over, you know what's coming, and you can still laugh hysterically at them.
I love that Tim Conway always went out of his way to completely derail every sketch he was involved in by improvising. "The Dentist" and "The Elephant Story" are the 2 funniest clips I've ever watched and cry laughing every time I see them.
The best part of the dentist skit is the moment Harvey crossed his legs, knowing that's the precise moment he peed his pants
Conway played it straight during the dress rehearsal, which was also taped, and once he knew he had a good take in the can, went wild during the main taping.
Yes, every time
I never cease to laugh with them.

Simply, irreplaceable. Genuine comedy!!
Vicki usually played the airheaded kid sister and other Valley Girl-type characters until Mama came along. That's when she really came into her own and became a major player on the show. The character earned Vicki her own sitcom that ran for several seasons.
porflepopnecker4376,
Vicki putting three very experienced and top notch actors on the floor, or curled up on the couch with laughter didn't hurt her reputation one bit either.
Greatest show in years. Funny people without cursing pure talent!!!🤡
