  • Wasdale is the wildest of the valleys to be found in the Lake District National Park.
The glacially formed valley stretches for over 10 miles from Wasdale Head down to the village of Gosforth. The valley plays host to the country's deepest lake, the tallest mountain and smallest church.
The head of the valley is dominated by the mountains of Great Gable and Scafell Pike (this the highest peak in England), which, along with Scafell, Kirk Fell and Yewbarrow, surround the small community of Wasdale Head.
A large part of the main valley floor is occupied by Wast Water (or Wastwater) which is the deepest lake in England (at 258 feet).
Wast Water (like much of the Lakes) can be busy with visitors. It is worth staying or visiting a bit later in the day when the numbers of people greatly reduce.
The Wasdale Head Inn is a great pub and well worth a visit. Set amongst wonderful scenery, it is positioned at the Wastdale Head end of the lake and is a popular pub stop for both walkers and visitors (in other words, just follow the lakeside road as far as it goes and you will find it!).
