Absolutely loved this show - the drum score was amazing. I marched with Vanguard in '92 and the contras all talked about only playing a handful of notes for the entire '91 show. Funny.
What instrument did you play? For the record 1992 scv is my favorite show ever. I loved the music. I loved the percussion score. I really loved the bottle dancers. Great Great show. Underrated.
@@Allison_Chaynes Thanks! Contrabass for me. Crowd favorite - judges hated us. I think the show wasn't headed in the direction DCI wanted to go. Still - one of the greatest experiences of my life. Wonderful people. What/when did you play?
I know people are a little put back by the judge here. However, I appreciate that he talked to them like adults and not grade school kids. Everyone doesn't get a trophy. Still though, this is a great Great show. Drumline was nice!!!!
I remember when I first saw this. The "helicopter" effect at the beginning. Who thought of that??? That was AMAZING! I only imagined when they rehearsed this at schools and neighbors came out looking for a chopper trying to land.
Eric Bolivar It almost sounds like he's annoyed to be watching. Like he was called from the hospitality room at the last minute and wanted to hurry back to his free coffee and doughnuts.
@@EMFDrill No way. I actually appreciate it compared to the fluffy "Everyone gets a trophy" judge. It makes you better. I hear some wgi tapes these days and it comes off like they're talking to 2nd graders. I'm not saying treat them like a drill sergeant, however these are young adults. 🤷🏻♂️
probably one of the most critical reviews in DCI I have ever heard. Not SCV's strongest show but damn if I never marched or knew anything about the activity I say this group/corp was horrible from the judge's comments. I think SCV percussion really brought the sound to life with imagery of Helicopters and shelling effects and I'm glad I don;t go to hear the judges.
ah yes "the Doppler Effect" that bookends this timeless show. Get yourself a good audio recording at scvanguard.org or dci.org & it sounds real....no need to suspend disbelief. Note that this judge is evaluating VIZ not music. The criticism is of minute detail; the casual fan sees almost no errors and hears NO music &/or timing errors.
Thx but heard it live that night. I know this judge's work quite well he critiqued us that night as well Go Bluuuu! I rather enjoyed SCV's broadway program. VIZ or not they still took 4th!
T San Congrats on BC's recent success. The Brass Caption head is the same one I had (back when he was just 5 years past his age-out) ...The inimitable; the master of MB, drum corps...even broadway-- Dean Westman. I'm rootign for a BC win this year T San
Paul Litteau gave the 6th-pl Cadets a 9.7 and the 5th pl BD a 9.9 out of 10. SCV got a 9.4. Nice to see a judge take risks. And YET AGAIN, they march holes in Finals. What the hell was with this corps?
I don't believe the judge made one commment about the drumline, and they were clearly the better marching section. Among many highlights, that angle they hit at 8:25 was impressive.
Overall they had the best drums that year even though it was a 3-way tie Finals night with Cavaliers and Star. They took top score for semis and 2nd for the prelims.
multibuddhaneo I've always known about the 3-way tie, but I've always wondered if there was 3 winners or just SCV. I remember seeing ads in '91/'92 for Pearl, Yamaha, and Premier all mentioning a high percussion winner.
The drill was dirty,yes...But the hornline was awful for SCV...really a building year in hornline, it sounds like, pun intended. Only the drumline executed in true SCV fashion. Hot marimba girl, also. Had no choice but to give that gorgeous smile for the camera... This show should be called Miss Marimba!
It was a bitch of a drill that kept changing...plus, we had to RUN IN from the tunnel, which didn't help. The show had a lot of potential. We were 3rd mid-season. We probably deserved 3rd overall.
brewmanbrett You don't need to tell me twice. ;) It stands as one of the most underrated of the "Best of DCI" there is. Without a doubt, it was head and shoulders more passionate, theatrical, and intense...by orders of magnitude...than what Star, Cavs, and PR put on the field that year. Star won because they were technically perfect. But no one ever cites '91 Star as "the show that made their heart pound the most." Cavs were fine, but it was just technical aptitude. PR was just loud, as they always were. We put on the most intense, most dramatic, most emotional show of the year...AND, by the way, of 1992, as well. If we had been able to maintain the technical quality SCV had in '89, we would have been unstoppable.
agogobell28 greetings...lemme see JUST ONE CORP today do what was done THEN...1987-9992 SCV.,.,.nd i will hand u some props...other than that...OFF BRAND @$$ ...go do what was done nd make it yours...i am TYSON...the unclassy rude boy...halla

had the pleasure of being there that night to witness this classic tale of my childhood.
This drumline is INSANE!!!
Still love the show and it holds up well even after 13 years. Tremendous design, music+drill.
***** 23 years...
agogobell28 I guess my math wasn't so good here... :)
Hell yes!!!
Love the visual concepts of this show!
Most delectable.

F that judge😂I have tapes from 91 &92 I need to share. Thx for the share Derrick 👍🏽

🚁 🥁
Thank You for the share. Brought back lots of memories!
Wow we were really getting ripped apart visually. Thanks for posting..
Eric Bolivar It almost sounds like he's annoyed to be watching. Like he was called from the hospitality room at the last minute and wanted to hurry back to his free coffee and doughnuts.
That said, the difficulty is absolutely ridiculous, particularly in the closer at 200 bpm. Rosander did not write easy drill.

The marching was not clean...you can see it in the forms over and over. SCV is awesome, but this is a competition
Loved the show, but man they really were visually dirty.
My band director was with them that year. Unfortunately he injured himself and had to stand on the sideline.
Emiyah McCray Was he the recurring hole in the drill?
agogobell28 Yes, with the French Horns
Funny, the hole in the 1989 show was in the French horns as well, though NOT because of injury.
Well then, wow. The Santa Clara Vanguard needs to fix that.
The guard changed costumes in mid-season from the green to yellow, and added better props to add so much GE visual to this show.
Does anybody know where I can find the notes for the solos at 8:08,8:30, and 9:30? I personally love the feature.

Tim F :)
Eric Bolivar Seriously, you guys marched extremely well. You'd think this judge would've complimented you guys.
@@timf5963 Especially since the drill-design staff had the brilliant idea to split the bass line in half and separate them by 247 yards.
2013 Madison Scouts much lol.
5:03 08 Phantom
10:58 That 🥐 just gave me drumabetis, especially with the Bass 🥁s. 11:02-11:03 Bass 🥁#5 is too tasty.
Maybe not the cleanest, but still the 4th best corps on the planet. So there's that, I guess.
Derrick Phillips 220+ BEAT per minute...no excuses...wow
Derrick Phillips Oh no doubt. Soooo much better than 1995 Madison. [/sarcasm]
+Inspadave 4th best corps, or best 4th place corps? There's a difference.
Tim F
I am pretty sure the OP meant best 4th place corps.
+Inspadave I'm pretty sure he meant the 4th best corps of 1991. That's essentially what he wrote.
The drill was dirty,yes...But the hornline was awful for SCV...really a building year in hornline, it sounds like, pun intended. Only the drumline executed in true SCV fashion. Hot marimba girl, also. Had no choice but to give that gorgeous smile for the camera...

Anyone know the judge?
The girl at the 4:38 mark looks like she really fits in with the whole communist feel.
JESUS they were dirty. Very, very dirty. Of course, the uniform colour choice didn't help AT ALL with the visual cleanliness.
It was a bitch of a drill that kept changing...plus, we had to RUN IN from the tunnel, which didn't help. The show had a lot of potential. We were 3rd mid-season. We probably deserved 3rd overall.
timber72 The changes were really evident in the closer. Helluva show, though.
timber72 Thay can call it as dirty as they want to, but that show is one of the finest things the activity has ever produced.
brewmanbrett You don't need to tell me twice. ;)
