SCV Simple Gifts...tears every time. So glad we performed this piece my age-out year because it summarized what my 10 year DC career was about - all the Simple Gifts.
SCV 2009 was the first show to ever give me goosebumps (not live sadly I was a wee middle schooler unaware of DCI). My high school played simple gifts in remembrance of a band mom who passed away. The show lead to us placing at finals in BOA, then you guys come along and play the shit out of it. There's no explaining the connection I have with Simple Gifts especially you all's rendition of it. Absolutely amazing.
2009 was our family's introduction to drum corps. We went to Stanford to "see what this drum corps thing was all about," on the recommendation of my then 11 year old's band director. Sitting in our seats, long before any corps had taken the field, my daughter announced that one day she was going to march on that field. Four years later she was so proud to march onto that field as a member of SCVC. Later that night, I told her how happy I was for her, that she had realized her goal of marching onto that field and her response was, "I can't wait to do it in an A-Corps uniform, and she did that, 2 years later. To this day you ask her what her favorite SCV show is, and she will tell you immediately, 2009, Ballet for Martha. It started it all.

What I love about Vanguard 09 is they didn’t shy away from the things that made this such an incredible and inspiring performance from the Cadets back in 87, but it is still very much their own performance. A crazy amount of respect given by one org to another, whether intentional or not
Their retreat from the field was one of the most spectacular things I have ever seen in drum corp. Not complicated compared to the other parts of the show, just beautiful.
Our director used to show us videos of some of the greatest drum corps moments to motivate us and damn it it worked. 7 years later it still makes me want to grab my trombone and hit the field
2011 in Atlanta...a grown man openly wept when at the end of Madison's closer. It was a standing ovation from when they form the company front until well-past the end of the show.
I was 36 years old in 2000. I was watching that show on PBS the night it was broadcast and just as the Cadets go from "the circle and the line" to the "sideways isocseles triangle" 2 minutes into their performance I lost it. The chords, the quick change from one shape to another, the guy holding the girl above his head...........I was crying so hysterically that I couldn't see the screen for the next 30 seconds. I had to walk into my bathroom to get a roll of toilet tissue to dry my eyes.
I wasn’t even born during 9/11 (02’ kid) and i still shed a tear watching this. I couldn’t imagine being there live, on top of truly understanding first hand the depth of this show. I would’ve bawled my eyes out too.

I hope you joined a corp! It warmed my heart to read your comment! I was in band in Alabama, and was able to be in Winter Guard for one year, 1979. We also had the blessing and opportunity to go to a DCI regional championship held at Legion Field in 1978. I always wanted yo join Bridgemen, but no way could we afford it! I love these videos and Im so glad that people take time to post them. You learn discipline being in a marching band. Bands are so small nowadays, as kids are too fat and lazy to march in the hot sun, or think its nerdy. I will never forget it, and will always appreciate it.
I watched it on TV with some friends and we were laughing and crying at the same time at how amazing it was. The entire show was incredible and they just kept topping themselves with every passing moment.
My all time favorite! I played that on the baritone horn with my high school in my senior year. That was a killer closer! We won the 1991 EMBA Group 3 championship with that one!
Can we call them the Bluecoats not the second corps? They deserve that respect. Ngl I'm a Blue Devils fan but I still love a lot of the Bluecoats' shows. They're both amazing world-class drum corps and I would recommend watching their shows, especially Metamorph, the Blue Devils show from 2017
I looked up that video and this one comes up a few down. I was hoping that they were in here, since the music of the night is one of my very favorite songs, but I would put that above at least 1 of these.
I took my wife to her 1st drum corps show at Easts in 2009. She is a fine musician, composer and singer in her own right and had seen some of the biggest rock groups ever, Stones Who, in the biggest venues, 50 60000 people. But when SCV finished their show A Tribute to Martha....I literally screamed at her, THAT'S IT.....THAT'S DRUM CORPS!!! I had tears in my eyes. SHe said she had never seen such a close connection between the performers on the field and the people in the stands I tried to explain to her that we had all been there, performing on that very field, performing at that level.
The SCV '09. The company front pushing forward reminds me of my high school show ending. Instead of Simple Gifts it was Somewhere Over the Rainbow from Wizard of Oz. Where the colorguard was we had the emerald castle with a yellow brick road going down the middle of the field. During the company forward we had balloons release from behind the castle into the air. It was just amazing!
.....and i gotta love Madison Scout's appalachian spring. Our HS Band performed it in President Clinton's inaugural parade in 1993. Gives me chills hearing it every time.
i was at the 2011 finals. Madison Scouts' closer still gives me chills to this day. Its one of the only closers next to PR's Firebird closer that chills me.
Seeing these great Drum Corps march brings back so many great memories from high school marching band. As an individual you play such a small part, but when everyone works together, something incredible is created. You spend so much time and effort practicing, and then when it's time to go on, you just perform. Everything else disappears, and you all become one. There's not much else like it.
+Joel Zapata yea music is so calming yet emotional. Go listen to American Elegy by Frank Ticheli, he wrote it in memory of Columbine High School shooting massacre, not as a song of sorrow though, as a song of power.
+Joel Zapata my wind ensemble played it last spring and they got a standing ovation, so pretty, so much meaning and power behind it. One of the few songs that will bring me to tears.
A lady friend introduced me to DCI over 30 years ago. I came across this video by serendipity, and I'm reminded what a true gift my friend passed to me.
The runner certainly needs to be close, but he doesn't have to worry about being exact. The musicians are holding the final note of the song and watching the conductor. The conductor is watching the runner. When the runner lands in their arms, the conductor gives the cut-off, signaling for the band to stop.
Can I just say I’m hella proud to have my trumpet section teacher be in the Santa Clara simple gifts show. He is an awesome just found out also my head band director also marched in the 2011 Scouts show. I’m so proud an honored to be their student.
Without drum corps, the world would be a sadder place! I wasn't able to join drum corps, but I have utmost respect and admiration for those who could! You are all amazing musicians, amazing color guard, and fantastically awesome drum majors!!! There's nothing like company lines and horn pops! Keep the music alive and the drill kick ass! As always, Phantom Regiment... you're awesome!
Maybe it's because I marched the scouts in the color guard, maybe it's because I was in New York at the time of 9/11, but the 2011 Scouts show still moves me to tears to this day. I think it's because of my seven year drum corps career. I just remember watching in the stands in San Antonio just bawling I was just so moved. Nobody should have to see or experience the loss and the fear I felt that day in New York and seeing the Scouts' show that year just somehow made me feel vindicated and at peace. I was so very proud of the Scouts that year and I will always be. Thank you so much for posting these awesome videos Joel Zapata! I take my hat off to you. You have my respect.
The right kids, the right place, the right parental support and the right instructors = a lifetime of great experiences and memories. To those fortunate to have ridden the wave...Congrats !
Well I am completely new to the world of drum corps, I came across this on you tube by chance. As a Brit I had some idea about US marching bands and high school bands etc. I am an ex army musician but not for a long time. I am absolutely astonished by the standard of both musicianship and performance of DCI. I am hooked via you tube. All the performances I have seen have been absolutely superb with some performances topping that. Thus far from this and other channels ones that stand out for me are Phantom Reg 2008, SCV 2018 and Blue Devils 2014 also the Cadets 2011. The overall spectacle and level of entertainment is top notch. Will look forward to maybe getting to attend world champs in 2019. Well done to all DCI corps past present and future.
All very good shows, and thanks for posting. For those not old enough to remember, Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights 1970 closer (Free Again), Blue Rock's 1971 closer (Requiem for the Masses), and 27th Lancers 1975 closer (Danny Boy) were all very much worthy of being included in this group.
Thanks for being considerate in that some of the drum corps fans weren't even alive when shows happened instead of just whining like some other commenters do that some older shows weren't included.
The finale to The Firebird Suite, marching or otherwise, is such a power piece of music. It doesn’t give me chills, it makes me tear up. Damn I miss marching
Could watch drum corps performances all day long, so specifically theatrical, with gymnastics, dance, choreography and unique creativity at all levels beginning with the music, then the marching then incorporating all the other elements, marvelous!
Imagining how in the world their band leaders envisioned these formations, the 100's of hours each member does on their own, then as small groups then as a whole,, absolutely fantastic dedication and ohh my,, how entertaining is that! Well done!!
As a member of the Boston Crusaders 77,78 and North Star 80, I was truly brought into the world of sound. No theatrics, no percussion pits, just M&M and Sound. Look at the old corps like the Crusaders, Lancers, North Star and Bridgemen.
I love Drum Corps so much and so glad I discovered it before I got too old back in 1987 and I aged out in 89. The best 3 summers of my life!!! This brings back so much!!!
Thank you so much for including Scouts 2011. Easily one of the most emotional shows and performances of all time, not even specific to drum corps. The 10-year anniversary of the nation's worst tragedy in recent history, and a show to tell its story. Not only a story of New York City's resiliency, but of the entire nation's. I guarantee you none of the performers had a single dry eye after that performance.
Saw my first DCI competition as a freshman in high school in 1978 and was hooked for life, still remember that lineup for that show , it made such a huge impact, will forever be a SCV and a huge fan of Madison !
Spirit of Atlanta's "Let It Be Me" from 1979-80 still gets me, more than 35 years later. They just tried to knock the grandstands over with that wave of brass.
I was in SOA in 1980. Even as a performer, I got chills every time we did "Let It Be Me." This was Jim Ott's finest arrangement and, I believe, the 1980 horn line was Jim's finest work and a tribute to his teachings. There was (and is) nothing like the sheer emotion of the song and arrangement...nor of the raw, yet controlled, power of the horn line at the end. RIP Jim.
When that trumpet player hits that pose as the company front approaches with the slow march?…absolutely incredible blend of impeccable drill and music writing. Hands down one of my favorite DCI moments of all time.
How in the hell did you manage to find a video from 2007 that's even more potato quality than one from 1988? Jokes aside, thanks for the upload. This brings back many good memories. I'm an old school DCI fan, so it was a bit of a shock to me when I went to a local show a few years ago and saw that every corps had a DJ, amplification, and trombones, but I eventually made peace with it over time. DCI had to adapt with the times. It was inevitable, I guess. It's still a bit weird to me, but you know what? All of the kids involved today are putting in just as much time, effort, and dedication as anyone who has done this before, and they are having a great time doing it! I suppose that is all that really matters. DCI-4-Life!
Always played football and was always inside at halftime and never got to appreciate all the hard work, time, and practice that went into these productions !! WOW !!
I cant believe people went to the comments just to complain, or put commentary about electronics and bugles and uhg! This is beautiful music you're listening to, and that's all you can focus on? We all love the marching arts, why cant we appreciate different interpretations of such? Just sit back, and let your heart be indulged in the sounds...
Only DCI finals I've had the chance to attend, that 2014 Blue Coats performance. Makes me miss everything about high school and college marching band so much.
Wow. I played contrabass with the 1984 Garfield Cadets. This brings back so many memories of the road, the endless practice, and having to push start that damn bus every day to get it started.
I was so happy to see Madison Scouts' 1988 Malagueña on here. And my friend Brandon marched Phantom in 2007! Nice to see their closer from that year made it into the cut even though the video quality itself isn't that good.
Got hooked on D & B Corps competitions and shows while in the U.S.M.C. Recruit Depot Band in San Diego and two of my best buddies were the instructors of the Marine Corps D & B Corps. Saw some great shows in California. Every time we could get to a show or competition we went. These were great shows of perfection no matter how big or small the Corps was. These individuals certainly knew what discipline and hard work can do. Bless them all were ever they may now be. Joe Engman - U.S.M.C. 1964 to 1968.
When I first watched this video, that Vanguard sound just gave me chills every second. Now, 6 months later, after having watched it many many times, it still gives me chills all around.
Madison scouts 2011 is what made me love them I remember crying in the theatre at the show because of the general effect during the 9/11 scene. And my god the screamers! Soloist just 6 years later can't get that sound mic'd
Thank you for putting Madison 2011 on here. Literally my favorite show of all time when I saw it live it was my first entrance into the world of drum corps and it deserve to be here. 100%
My father was on the snare line of the Caborells (may be misspelled) out of Cleveland, OH in the late 60's. We went to the DCI each year in July at Rice University in Houston to enjoy the shows. In person, it blows you away and gives your chills!
I can definitely vouch for 1988 Madison Scouts. I was not a die-hard fan at the time, I saw them live at Arrowhead for Championships and watched them win. I'm sorry for everyone the video isn't HD. I commend the fact you selected a 1988 Corps in comparison to the 4 modern Corps.
I have always wanted to go to this competition. When I was in high school band we had to be at school, on the field at 7am marching until 8:30, making it to 1sr period by 9:00. Band was last period. We marched for 2 hours, an hour in class and hour after school. We loved it. No one complained. Great teacher. We won competitions and were the envy of bands in our city and county. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. It takes stamina and precision and memorizing the music until it second nature. I respect these people who are out there giving it their all.
I still remember my first drum corp show in 1971 and have been a Troopers' fan since that day. Yes, drum corp has changed dramatically but I'm just glad it is still around so I could have the chance to watch my son march with the Vanguard Cadets last year. Loved it then and love it now. Thanks for the videos.
What extraordinary talent both on the field and especially behind the scenes!! Coordinating these spectacular feats takes time, patience, and love for the music! So wonderfully performed!
These drum and bugle corps groups are fantastic. The Seattle Cascade Drum and Bugle Corps came to Everett Aqua Sox game for the 4th of July and played cor us and blew me and all there away. It made me so proud to be an American and liveing in the freedoms we all share. I play a silver Selmer deville trumpet and have since I was in grade school. love the sound and loved this group of players. The big baratones added so much in volume and intensity of the patriotic piece they played. I was so impressed I would love to hear them play again. Maybe The Everett AquaSox will have them back again. I hope so.

I looked up that video and this one comes up a few down. I was hoping that they were in here, since the music of the night is one of my very favorite songs, but I would put that above at least 1 of these.
And the bottle dance 1992
ua-cam.com/video/ZcD45TPOPYc/v-deo.html
That is exactly what I was thinking. I had the privilege of seeing that performance in person, and it still gives me chills just thinking about it.
Omg I need to see that
My time in Drum Corps in the sixties was home . These closers are heaven . Lordy !!!
.....and i gotta love Madison Scout's appalachian spring. Our HS Band performed it in President Clinton's inaugural parade in 1993. Gives me chills hearing it every time.
i was at the 2011 finals. Madison Scouts' closer still gives me chills to this day. Its one of the only closers next to PR's Firebird closer that chills me.
what were they playing?
Tauvia Eggebroten “Empire State of Mind”
@Austin Hord you were in the band or in the audience?
@@yusrailyas i was in the audience
Everybody gangsta till the bells come up at the same time
Mr_Awesome773 lol
It's been over forty years since being on the field like this and I still get the feels. This is some of the best I've ever seen in my life. Bravo.
To this day I look at Madison performing Empire state of Mind and remember why I fell in love with drum corps
One of my favorite UA-cam videos of all time. I still get chills from hearing the first clip.
Amazing. Sad that drum corps has never received the recognition they deserved. Astounding precision and musicianship!
Glad you added 88 Madison Scouts - Kansas City. One of the best shows... ever. Every Corps was fantastic!!
My first year marching in 88 and I loved the Scouts and that show was just amazing every time I got to see it!!!
Phantom Regiment and Madison Scouts nearly brought me to tears.
nearly?
Nearly, Like trying to hold it back like a man.
Haha, let it go and enjoy the music like a man
+Joel Zapata yea music is so calming yet emotional.
Empire State of Mind just blows me away Scouts. You can tell each and every member was into it. THAT'S the Madison I want to see again.
How the hell did he time that jump so perfectly
Meme Lab she correction, it takes a lot of practice
And they nailed it
The runner certainly needs to be close, but he doesn't have to worry about being exact.

Eric Sibrianni as a fellow New Yorker and musician I agree
The right kids, the right place, the right parental support and the right instructors = a lifetime of great experiences and memories. To those fortunate to have ridden the wave...Congrats !
God I miss the Drum Corps. Was hard work but I wish I could have stayed forever 😩💓
Great performances. Thanks for sharing.
We played the same show as the Madison Scouts 1988 it was awesome James Madison High School Bullero!
Awesome to see new fans!
Also from back then: Casper Troopers starburst, and the Mariners(?) with "Captain Crunch" as DM and "Red Sails in the Sunset"
Athletes have nothing over these amazing young people. They really should have more recognition. Thank you for sharing!
It's not a zero sum game, both can be appreciated :)
I wouldn't go that far
The finale to The Firebird Suite, marching or otherwise, is such a power piece of music. It doesn’t give me chills, it makes me tear up. Damn I miss marching
Could watch drum corps performances all day long, so specifically theatrical, with gymnastics, dance, choreography and unique creativity at all levels beginning with the music, then the marching then incorporating all the other elements, marvelous!
Could?😂
Imagining how in the world their band leaders envisioned these formations, the 100's of hours each member does on their own, then as small groups then as a whole,, absolutely fantastic dedication and ohh my,, how entertaining is that! Well done!!
As a member of the Boston Crusaders 77,78 and North Star 80, I was truly brought into the world of sound. No theatrics, no percussion pits, just M&M and Sound. Look at the old corps like the Crusaders, Lancers, North Star and Bridgemen.
you can take me out of drum corp, but you can't take the drum corp out of me
All of these bands are so amazing hard to find words to describe the beauty hard work and heart they put in their music
Drum Corps just lifts the spirits!!!
I love Drum Corps so much and so glad I discovered it before I got too old back in 1987 and I aged out in 89. The best 3 summers of my life!!! This brings back so much!!!
WHEN I HEARD MADISON SCOUTS PLAYING MALENGUENA I CRIED BC WE PLAYED THAT IN JAZZ
Always in my blood..chills everytime loved my drum corps years❤ ago
Thank you so much for including Scouts 2011. Easily one of the most emotional shows and performances of all time, not even specific to drum corps. The 10-year anniversary of the nation's worst tragedy in recent history, and a show to tell its story. Not only a story of New York City's resiliency, but of the entire nation's. I guarantee you none of the performers had a single dry eye after that performance.
My brother was in SC Vanguard in 1981-82. I have Appalachian Spring on my playlist in the car. Sunnyvale Jets!
Holy crap, in the phantom one it looks like they are full on sprinting and sounding fantastic.
Plus they are playing an awesome song!
Everyone of these members should be proud. Lots of hard work. thanks. From a former corps member
I love dci marching bands! Just the overwhelming power still give me the chills!
One name. Jim Ott.
They did not try - they did.
Would love to see that again
AMEN!
DCI-4-Life!
Lol tru, it was the best quality I could find at the time 😂
Always played football and was always inside at halftime and never got to appreciate all the hard work, time, and practice that went into these productions !! WOW !!
This is Drum Corps they are the best of the best they don't do halftime for football games. They are the show!
Man at 0.50 when those trumpets pop up to the next octave it gives me chills every time! What a show this was
Tone
I cant believe people went to the comments just to complain, or put commentary about electronics and bugles and uhg! This is beautiful music you're listening to, and that's all you can focus on? We all love the marching arts, why cant we appreciate different interpretations of such? Just sit back, and let your heart be indulged in the sounds...
Crown 2015 honestly should make a list like this. The surprise crown formation brought me to tears the first time I saw it live.
hasNo
Bluecoats...awesome..but then all these young and talented folks worked their butts off...everytime i went i had tears in my eyes...
Best time of my high school years was marching band! My 30th reunion is coming up in August & can not wait to see everyone again!!😁✌🏻
Brian Riven what 9/11 scene sorry lol
I love when you can see them smile. Marching band is such a fun activity and looking at them finish with that pride is amazing
One of my band directors works with Carolina crown. Sometimes during after school rehearsal, he wears his crown t shirt
@@lilSpleet damn i must have short term memory lost because who asked if you did
Being in drum corp 8. years in the senior corp, these are the best great that all i can say great,
Why any dislikes here? This is a very good compilation of some of my personal favorite closers, 32 people just can't be satisfied.
Ethan Hulse haha 35 people are woodwinds and just can't appreciate this type of stuff!
I'm a saxophone and thoroughly enjoyed this video.
-_-
maybe pop "music" fans haha :)
They arent happy to begin with.
Tilt haters
Thank you for putting Madison 2011 on here. Literally my favorite show of all time when I saw it live it was my first entrance into the world of drum corps and it deserve to be here. 100%
This video made night and brought tears to my eyes
I marched with SCV in 77 when they took 3rd and 78 when they took 1st at DCI. I love watching them kick ass.
1995 Scouts is my personal favorite, if you can't hear the corps because the crowd is cheering so loud, you know you've done something right.
I respect these people who are out there giving it their all.
i literally have chills like not even joking. 2019 madison scouts gave me chills too
Oof.
🇬🇧UK here.....never seen such a thing in all my years. The first one made me cry.
You Muricans do do stuff beautifully.
😍
Any closer that has a company front will always give me chills.
'88 Scouts. Damn straight, skippy. (no extension cord required, either)
What extraordinary talent both on the field and especially behind the scenes!! Coordinating these spectacular feats takes time, patience, and love for the music! So wonderfully performed!
You forgot to add 2008 Phantom Regiment (Spartacus).
aka the best ending ever
Not just chills and goosebumps.......Spartacus gives MOUNTAIN BUMPS!
Literal tears at the end of that show, every single time.
I hope so.
For those of you wondering what piece the fourth one was, it's the finale to Igor Stravinsky's first ballet, The Firebird.
That was one of my favorite pieces when I played in college as the tympanist.
OMG! We've come a long way since the Hawthorne Caballeros, if they still exist!
Madison Scouts 1981 - that entire show should have won, but “Ice Castles” brought the house down
those 2011 Scouts man…such a beautiful sound and band.
