On a separate note from the UK vs US Dennis competition me and TheAshTube are doing, it’s intriguing how bleak and messed up punching down humor was until very recently across the board. If you compare Ren and Stimpy or Fairly OddParents to late ‘90s Beano, there’s a very similar edge. Though of course, the Beano can uniquely say they came up with that kind of somehow kid-oriented humor before anyone else.
Now isn’t it odd that Britain comics had big dichotomy where we had wholesome and mischievous Beano while their more popular contents are exact opposite (like 40k, 2000AD, and “British Invasion” comic writers like Alan Moore). Same with literature since even Lord of the Rings and Hobbif were more Tolkien disillusioned with heroic stories and had “some guy from village dragged into adventures and horrified at conflict” (Bilbo had happy ending but Frodo got PTSD).
@powerist209 it's nice to have different flavours. We needed even more. There were too many beano and dandy style comics thatbdidntnoffer much in alternatives
You know, if US Dennis and UK Dennis met in a McDonalds and shared war stories, US Dennis would be amazed about how long it took for UK Dennis to be reigned in by changing times and disgruntled parents…and promptly realize how it’s better for everyone involved that he’s as tame as he is. And UK Dennis can fire back stating that “Yeah, well my shtick’s been so funny my cousin Minnie’s been ripping it off since ‘53, and even though I despise my publisher’s self-plagiarism, it does remind me of something. When did your guy decide to show the states that lassies can get rough and tumble too?” “Uh, I think the ‘70s…maybe?”
“Wow, your dad paddled you? That hasn’t happened in my strip since…I think CBS forced me to clean my act in the early ‘60s! They’re a television network, by the way” American Dennis would add. “Oy blimey.” Scottish Dennis replied, “Been there. Got to be my old self in the ‘96 cartoon when it was still cool for kids shows to be cynical and edgy. Then when the BBC called me up again in 2009, they decided to tone down the edge saying that that was ‘Horrid Henry’s territory’ Blimey, that guys an even bigger ripoff than you!” “The launch date was a coincidence and for the record, my prototype debuted first!”

This is one of the greatest publications in the world. My uncle was British so he used to bring buttloads of issues for me and my brother for Christmas. We didn’t always understand the slang, but it was still a lot of fun. Also, yes, I believe Little Plum wasn’t offensive, just a product of its time that went on WAY past when it was acceptable to draw these characters.

Dennis is my character in The Beano, as he's the king of it. It is true when you said Minnie was basically Dennis in a skirt, but I do think there are some differences. I think one main difference in this era of the Beano and before that, Dennis was more of a big tough guy who would knock you out and could be considered a bully, while Minnie wasn't really a bully, and I heard once that the main difference with Dennis and Minnie most of the time was that Dennis was usually punished in the end, while Minnie often escaped and got away with it. The Bash Street Kids are great, Danny is probably my favourite. They have actually introduced more members to the Bash Street Kids recently, and most of them are fine, but I do feel like they should remain as solo characters and not be apart of the Bash Street Kids. Billy Whizz is probably the fastest character in history, honestly, especially in the Beano Videostars. I don't think Roger is a bad kid, I just think he is smart kid more so. For the Beano website, it's actually a good site. Some of the games on the site are actually pretty fun, there was a fun Bash Street Kids game on there, and most of the games about Gnasher are great. Although, there was one game, Flick Football, which I played recently, and I was so bad at it. The Beano is great, but what's weird is that I only have two issues of it, as well as the 2021 annual. I'm not a Beano collector, but I'm a Beano fan in different ways.
Wow that's surprising you only have 2 issues. You are a Beano encyclopaedia. I don't like the new bash street kid characters. They are badly designed and integrated. They would work in their own strip, but they are so modern looking that they clash with the 1940/50s aesthetic of the original kids. I think they should have modernised them all to match the new kids or just gave the new guys their own strip personally. Thanks for the comment 👍
