It feels so weird looking at Leo Baxendale's Bash Street Kids strips. It's strange because I can handle David Law's Dennis strips. I think this goes to shoe how influential David Sutherland was on The Beano. And I never knew Smiffy had a brother called Whiffy.
This one was a bit of a juggernaut, but I'm happy to get it out. A lot more beano stuff to come, Been checking a certain online shop everyday waiting for a certain wallet to come back in stock to do a video about a little club I and many other beano fans are in ;)
11:28 there’s an error. Minnie is torturing a character called Fatty fudge. Not Freddy/Fatty Brown (Bash street kids) as he is seen in the back. Fact: That Fatty was renamed to Francis in 2019 and are now friends. I read old Beanos.
@@theashtubereviews I thought it was ok, I wish the celebs were more involved in the strips hopefully the annual is better. I remember in 2018 I was at an Aldi and they had the 80th anniversary issue but my mum wouldn't buy it 😢
I know i ask a lot of questions when you release a new beano vid but, have you read/seen the archive books (i.e Dandy and beano gift book and the recent Beano the Dennis collection book trilogy)
With Dennis. I remember thing billy the kid and he got dog. With minnie thing like bad penny, tomboy With Bash Street kids, banna bunch the tiddler, swot and blot, gasworker Roger the dodger. Tricky dicky
The problem with the 85th Anniversary issue that I have, is that they replaced the Dennis strip with the Crossover strip. Which could be a problem, because Dennis would rarely appear in the strip.
You do good work. Before you're videos the only thing I knew about "The Beano" was that it had an alternate Dennis the Menace for our US version, yet I keep watching your videos about this magazine because you make them interesting and entertaining. (Over here, "Beano" is a brand of anti-gas pills you can take before eating beans.) Those prose strips remind me of the Prince Valiant strips that I would always skip over in the comics section of the newspaper when I was a kid. Even when I was a kid in the 80s it was a "zombie" strip that lingered on after the death of its creator. I don't even know if the strip was any good, it just seemed really boring at the time, as it was the only prose strip in the paper. You noted that the Little Plum strip wouldn't fly today, but look at how the black girl is drawn at the end of "Lord Snooty and his Pals" on the bottom of the page at 6:14! (I wonder if kids today would even realize that drawing was meant to represent a human child?) Minnie the Minx's dad looks like Hitler. If I didn't understand English I would've assumed it was a WWII propaganda cartoon. I think Johnny Leopard would've worked just as well (or better) without quite so much text in it. The Great Flood of London: I didn't realize that predictions of cities being flooded were happening back then. To this day people are still predicting that in 10 or 20 years a bunch of major cities will be flooded due to a rise in the sea level. A had to look up what the heck a "gasometer" is. Looks like it's a British term.
Thank you so much for the nice words. I'm so glad you enjoy them :D. I wish I knew that fact about the Beano being a brand of anti gas pills. I could have used it in my what is the beano video 😅. I never cared for prose comics as a kid either, I would have hated Valiant comics too I think 😅 didn't have the attention span. Yea the minstrel type girl in Snooty, I did notice it and I looked up was it a regular character because she stood out but as far as I can tell it was just a racist thing they would casually throw in from time to time back then. A lot of dad's in the beano had the Hitler moustaches back then it is crazy. The text in Johnny was very off-putting when I saw it. I was surprised I enjoyed it as much as I did. Wait till I do the beano number 1 and some of the early year comics. It has a lot of narrative tales. Never heard of a gasometer either, from looking at the picture, it just looks like a big cylinder for containing gas. It could use some Beano pills 😆
Yes, I have all of those, and they will be covered in future videos, been collecting as many special comics as I can, the only one I am having trouble with is that David Walliams issue for the 80th birthday
I really like that you hate Roger's idea of dodging so much. His true dodge is using a word loosely so that he can get away with anything (though he also fails at that even).
The real dodge were the friends we made along the way. I love Rodger, he was my favourite as a kid, but even then, I would think he was very loosey goosey with what he called 'dodges'
The fathers of these strips always had a garden with their prize turnip or rock garden or whatever. I could never tell if a lot of this stuff was a strange comic thing or normal British past time. Morris dancing and cheese downhill running surely just invented as a joke - no, actually things Brits do
@@theashtubereviews it's really interesting actually lots of cultural relics. I also thought that custard was just a thing comic characters would ingest, and possibly a telly tubby. Suffice to say when I saw actual real people enjoy "custard" I said BLECH and other comic SFX for disgust
I stopped reading the comic earlier this year to focus more on manga, so i missed out on the 85th anniversary issue. Doesn’t seem like i missed out on a lot. I personally don’t like the new Bash Street artstyle either, it just looks so.. odd A prized marrow? What is this, Wallace and Gromit? The older comics have so much personality lol
The older comics were just the 1950s for 40 years 😅 I find the new bash street looks very refreshing, it's something different and the new characters look more natural in it. I think it is something that will develop and get better over time... I hope :). For manga I recommend DM Angel 😅 you probably already know all the famous ones so that's something a bit more obscure, I liked rave master aswell
I really love your videos! Modern Beano is so boring, it's woke, and old characters are removed. (Sees Ivy and Smudge return in the annual 2024.) Could that be a sign that Smudge and Ivy will have children of their own? I think D.C Thomson should learn from IDW, Dynamite and DC. Like, they could continue the old shows (Bananaman 83, Dennis and Gnasher 1996, and Dennis and Gnasher 2009.) In comic form! And, they should bring back the comic library and fun size. Plus, they could do free comic book day books and acknowledge fanfictions. Along with bringing the Dandy back as a full comic, not just as summer specials and annuals. And, they could a app, similar to 2000 AD, and Archie Comics. Plus, Lord Snooty the 1st is a bit of a bully. 5:11 to 6:09 Snooty bullies his "pals"
They should do free comic day thats a great idea. They have so much potential, I wish they took a bit more advantage off their amazing collection of IPs
@theashtube261 Or, even make a Smash-like game with them. (Alongside other UK Comics.) But, maybe I could do some of these as fanfics. (With you, NiallNorwood46, and Sparklob's help of course.)

So it would not make sense because most of the granparents is already dead by then.
