Nice work Jordan. Initially, I was a little disappointed at all the nitpicking. But then I realized that it was a good thing. It meant that there were no serious issues to discuss. Plus, if the Lucid software engineers see this video, they might incorporate some of your nitpicks/suggestions in future upgrades.

If you hear all the nitpicks you understand the worst case scenario for how you're going to perceive the car. Personally, none of that stuff matters to me, but if you're that type of person it's nice to know what you're getting into ahead of time. You're not going to pick all this up on the test drive.

Thanks for the in-depth review and I wish more reviewers would follow this example. I do own a 2024 Lucid Air Pure and it has been a great road car. I have owned a 2015 Tesla Model S and 2022 Model Y. The 2015 Model S definitely had some minor software issues and I had to reboot it fairly often. The Model Y was outstanding. I would agree that The Lucid software is not as mature as the latest Tesla software but I do get OTS updates regularly. So fa I am happy with the software but I do know Mr. Rawlinson has also recently stated that the software is not where it should be and has revealed many updates they plan to bring forward this year. I do not have the Dream Drive Pro but the Premium works well and I love the true 3D view when backing up or parking. I feel that the Adaptive Cruise is smoother than with the Model Y and accelerates and brakes more smoothly. I also love the UI in the Lucid. It is simple but intuitive and does not force you to always go to the screen; for example it has kept the turn signal & drive stalk, and has separate volume & climate controls. I also agree that simple hand adjustable air vents are great. Sometimes a true tactile feel is just better. The sound system is very good but not great but then again I listen to a lot of books on tape & podcasts as well as music so a super premium system is not my highest priority. Best of all it has a quiet ride and super efficient. It has a smaller battery (84 kWh) than the Y but with 420 miles of EPA range. The App can be slow at times but certainly not a deal breaker for those considering the Lucid. Over time, I feel that the App and software will catch up to the rest of the car and make for a truly outstanding EV...perhaps the new Gravity out this year will showcase how everything has improved. Considering that the Lucid Air is only about 3 full years old, I think they have done a remarkable job. For those interested in the latest from Lucid, I would suggest seeing the latest Technology & Manufacturing event that is now on Lucid's UA-cam channel. Their passion for the product really comes through. Thanks again for the review.

Yes, the app is too slow and far more limited than Tesla's. As far as the screens, some of it's a lot better than Tesla's and some needs catching up. They addressed a few pet peeves with this update, such as Homelink when backing out of the garage. But that's also one that Tesla took the better part of a decade to get right. I haven't had much need to reboot the Lucid, or any Tesla all that often, with the exception of the Model 3 in 2017. The big difference I see in software is approach. Tesla does things bit by bit, getting things working somewhat and then refining them. I've seen Tesla's lane change go from not existing to working awkwardly in HW1 to not being there in HW2 to working awkwardly to working well with Autopilot, to working awkwardly with FSD to working well. Lucid got it right the first time with this release in terms of smoothness, and is already smoother than Tesla. They are hesitant to change lanes in close gaps so far.
I saw Tesla's adaptive cruise control go from choppy, dangerous and unreliable to the point that even in HW1 it works better than in most new cars on the road. Lucid's wasn't perfect when first released, but quite good. At some point around the end of last year (I don't remember which update) it became excellent, and made me glad that I didn't have to relive Tesia's growing process from "it works, but drives like a teenager" on up. Ironically, when Tesla first released TACC, it was not called beta. FSD lost the beta tag, but Autopilot on HW1 is still called beta, despite outperforming what a lot of new car makers call production software.

In either the Morgan Stanley investor call or the Tech & Manufacturing presentation (I can't remember which one as they were just days apart) Peter admitted that their software was behind the curve and that it needed to be a key strength of the Lucid experience. He also said that they put new leaders in place for the software team, so we'll have to see what comes out of that. They are designing for Gravity and then back-porting some features to Air, so I have high expectations for Gravity when it finally cones out. They screen layout and design are improved in Gravity so some of these screen real estate issues should go away. 🤞 Thanks for the deep dive.

Thank you for the review. Been waiting for an extensive review of the software. I’m one of the many current Tesla Model S owners considering a switch to Lucid and really wanted to know how much had improved with the updated MCU. Audio is really important to me and was not happy to hear it hasn’t really improved. Lucid seems to be going for more of a neutral sound. Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s no integrated sub at all which would explain the lack of low end. Regarding the “single” option settings menu, it’s likely they will add additional settings functionality in the future which is why they chose to keep it separate. Not surprised at the lack of native Apple Music app but could see that coming in a future update. Slow wake times could be explained if they’re not taking advantage of BT LE capability in modern smart phones but that also can be updated OTA. Overall it’s easy to see where Lucid acknowledge some missteps with interior design by looking at what is changing in the Gravity, landscape vs portrait screen for example. Definitely looking forward to deep dive of its UI once the SUV hits the market.

I just confirmed with my local service guy that older Lucid Air sedans can be upgraded to the new faster system board. He's looking up the details for me and I hope to get it soon. Not that there is anything really wrong with the older board, but I want to be sure to be compatible with future updates. I agree that they need charge derating option. That is especially useful when using Lucid's EVSE to harvest power from a potentially sketchy outlet, a dryer plug (using adapter), or a non-dedicated 115V outlet when travelling in a remote location (insert pic of an Ozark cabin here). Key does frunk and trunk. Lucid works to avoid clutter on displays. Most functions have several ways to reach. They want you to be able to get in the car and drive w/o menu diving. Basic seat controls are on the seat, mirror and glovebox on the home page. You can set the air w/o any menu at all. Screens let you deep dive when you're ready. Consider the target market, premium Euro ICE drivers.

Lucid has w/o a doubt the best "behind the curtain" technology (drive units, drive calibration, efficiency, suspension tuning, TC/SC/ABS. Regen blending & brake feel. The screens/infotainment are nice, but just trinkets. The ride and drive are what these cars are all about.

Support for next-generation CarPlay to take over all of the screens in the car (it's possible now without losing any functionality), Phone Key support for the Wallet app, proper interactive home screen widgets support, iOS 18 control center toggle support. yes, also an Air Touring owner. On the back of the key fob, there is a 'morse code' menu of how long to click/press to perform different options (i.e. dot = short click; dash = long click). The fob shows: unlock (dot), lock (dot dot), and open the trunk (dash). While not printed on the fob, try "dot dash"...
One thing I haven't seen anyone review are the 'hidden' items, such as swiping the cabin lights to turn on/off. Also several warnings or functions that happen in unique situation (such as leaving the trunk or frunk open for too long), or waking up the car by pressing the door handles.

Yes, and that's a good thing. It used to be that all cars were a work in progress in a sense, but it meant trading in for a later model year to get new features. Tesla changed that, but did so by releasing features before they were ready for prime time, and then refining them over time. So far, Lucid has been more cautious with updates, but has things work better off the bat when added with an update, such as lane changes in this new release. Regardless, having a car that does more now than when I got it is nice. And having the hardware there so that future updates can fix some of these issues is key. Some of the things that Tesla got wrong (IMO) can't be fixed with just software updates.

Also de-rate charging to avoid stressing components, many outlets are not properly rated for high continuous loads or just output more power than it should so I’ll slow it down to avoid unnecessary ware or failure
I wouldn’t call this a dealbreaker but I’d really miss it if I moved over

I plan to switch from Tesla to Licid in the next year.
I derate all the time when charging at home so my energy pull uses what my solar is producing so I don’t pull from the grid. Really a great feature.
He does say that a lot of the time he is being very nitpicky. I actually was pretty impressed with his comments and might even be tempted if I were lucid to pay him to do an in depth review and just to give them some more feedback.

This video makes me want to wait for a Gravity since they clearly will be incorporating all their lessons learned into that vehicle. The Air UI is just a bit too gen 1 clunky in spite of the software updates. And 💯 screen vents are STUPID. I will never buy a car that doesn't have physical vents. Good job on that, Lucid

We are about to replace our Model S and such a shame the Lucid Air only comes with a black interior for the seats up front. Not sure what they are thinking to design such an amazing vehicle but not offer a light interior up front. We can't stand dark interiors, and I hope they offer a white or light-colored interior up front. Such an arrogant design choice to only offer a dark interior for a car that costs this much.

I had a similar concern. I actually even cancelled my initial order because of it, but in the end after driving it I decided to place a new order and I'm glad I did. In the end it didn't matter and any concern about the seat color for comfort has been a non issue.

It's not nice to blame old people for being old. I'm old enough for Medicare, above average height for a man, and no longer skinny. I have no problem. But people with problems should test drive different things to see what works.

100% disagree with the sound review. The Atmos tracks are excellent, but unfortunately there aren't a huge amount of them.

    • @bW9taeH4
      @bW9taeH4 Місяць тому

The best sound systems cost more than the car itself, and won't work in cars. What they have in common is that they strive for accuracy, and don't have things like tone controls because the less you put in the signal path the less you lose in fidelity. People who complain about needing more equalizer bars aren't the types who want the best sound. Ideally, a sound engineer will get things right in the first place, and design the system so that it sounds right with everything at neutral. If it really sounded better with the bass pushed, for example, that would be the default position. I'm not saying that Lucid's is the best out there, because I've never heard a truly great car sound system. Whether or not people want to say that Tesla's is better, the sound upgrade on my first Tesla was slightly less (or a lot more if you factor in inflation) than what Lucid charges for their premium system, and it was a disappointment.
The biggest obstacles to good sound in a car are outside noise, which Lucid does a pretty good job of taking care of, and listener position. The latter can't really be achieved in a car in an optimal way.
