Quick cheap fix for exhaust system drone noise

  • After building an exhaust system for my truck the "drone" sound was unbearable. I had some exhaust heat wrap laying around so figured I would try this out. The idea is to sound deadon the muffler which seems to act like a subwoofer. This is just an empty can not an actual muffler. I did end up replacing with an actual infilled muffler. This little project made it possible to drive my truck without getting a headache. Worked real well.

Just wanted to add my experience. I was a certified Vibration analyst for NASA. On of the issues discovered about vibration or "Drone" was that it is all about "Frequency Resonance". Where did the Frequency/Drone occur? Without any testing or frequency readings on your vehicle, "Just add Mass". Example - find some lead sheeting or heavier sheet metal and wrap it around the muffler and secure. By adding enough "Mass" to the muffler it will change the frequency of the vibration inside the muffler, thus moving the frequency to another level. It might take some playing with the amount of mass but it worked on many of the vibration frequencies" affecting critical NASA equipment. Just food for thought.

Isn’t adding exhaust wrap as he did “adding mass”?

    • @TheFreak111

@@jamesc6137 it is, but if adding mass is the fix perhaps it can be resolved with even less effort, without wrapping.

How would you go about adding the sheet metal to the exhaust and securing it?

I discovered this when i wrapped an expansion pipe on a 2 stroke exhaust. It SIGNIFICANTLY reduced noise on that application.

What will fix the drone completly is removing the stock engine and installing a 454LSX.

I wrapped my sport mufflers on my Porsche. There pretty thin metal, and I wanted to deaden the raspy noise, however the wrap stinks bad. I agree with the Nasa guy about adding sheets of thicker metal.

I've done this , its good for about 20dB. most sports mufflers have this inside the muffler chamber.

I'm getting ready to do this today. I bought a cheap catback for my Subaru and the muffler material is too thin and has no support inside so at certain rpms the sound waves cause the entire muffler to ring out like a bell. If I put my hand on it the ringing goes away like you'd expect. It sounds really good until the drone kicks in.

@@s-labs7731 ya it worked perfectly. The muffler body was too thin and acting like a bell. If you knocked on it you'd hear it ringing out but if you held your hand on it and knocked it wouldn't ring out. The wrap worked like a dream.

I just tried this on a 2012 Yukon Denali with 6.2 and a single Gibson exhaust. sorry but it did not work, everything sounded much deeper in bass (not just the 2k-2.5k drone) but from idle on up to 3k. I am going to remove it and go for a different muffler.
