Huge thank you to you!! Bought a catted ARM downpipe mated to OEM resonator and cat back and the drone was awful, borderline Honda style. The more sound deadening material (which almost always means a large number overall case and package), the smoother and quieter the exhaust can be. Tune VOLUME output with muffler selection. 2) Tubing diameter: larger = higher flow and a deeper note, but with a very real law of diminishing returns. I don't know what car you're treating. If your exhaust comes together into one pipe at any point, then I'd say to start with one and see how it sounds. If you have a V6/V8 with two separate exhaust systems, then you'll need one for each side. Remember: I'm sharing how this affected my 2.0T Volkswagen. You mileage may vary. Good Luck!
Thanks been debating weather or not to install a resonator I purchased for a resonator delete (lol). The aftermarket resonator is like yours (straight through design). Very informative.
Thanks! If I was to do it again, I don't think I'd mess with the exhaust. There comes a point when ears get too old to listen to the drone full-time. Thanks for visiting!
@@StealthGTI I bought a car that already had a modified exhaust and I'm trying to eliminate the drone without having to install a completely new or different exhaust system as they are very expensive for my particular vehicle.
I have a mk7 sport that I just added a dp/stage 2 to and experience the exact same 2.5-3k drone qualm as you did! Did you consider the vibrant “ultra quiet” resonator in your search? If so, what made you choose this model over it? Do you still get gurgles and “dsg farts” if applicable? Thanks! Keep making videos!
Ryan - The discussion that I linked in my write-up (see the link in the description above) specifically said NOT to choose the "ultra quiet." I'm not sure why. The author of the topic does A LOT of exhaust work, so I trusted his judgement. I have a 6MT, so no "DSG farts." But I do get an occasional gurgle. Thanks for your comments and thanks for visiting! -Scott
Might be a little late, but it answers the question. pulled directly from the write-up: "In short, believe the hype! The Vibrant standard 17950 or 17930 resonator, not the “Ultra Quiet” series, WILL curb unwanted drone in our cars with an aftermarket downpipe. At just $77 through Amazon, it is possibly the most effective solution for the money!" Perhaps the writer thought the ultra quiet series is just too expensive to justify the gains
Excellent! That works for some. I tend to prefer a quiet exhaust. However, I'm tolerating my current setup due to actual gains. See that video at ua-cam.com/video/_yVHGpKbucQ/v-deo.html if you're interested. Thanks for visiting.
@@StealthGTI It’s definitely not quiet 😂 the nice thing about it is at low rpm’s (maybe 2k and lower) there is zero drone and it’s nice for when I just want to cruise but when I get on it she screams. The burbles are also loud as hell which is fun
@Connor Foreman yes it will help. If it still drones you can try a bigger resonator like the vibrant 1141 uq but it will bring down the house level quite a bit
@@mohammedfareed9581 Vibrant themselves have said the 17950 will cut noise more than the 1141 due to the size. Yes, even though the 17950 isn't an ultra quiet series, it's quieter. It's also 18" long.
Thanks for the video, Stealth. Just got my downpipe installed today and noticed the same drone. After all this time are you still happy with the Vibrant resonator?
Yes. The suppression is less effective after a while since the packing will eventually wear-in and/or accumulate some soot. But it's still quieter than before. Thanks for visiting!
Hi there! Thanks for posting this video. I'm debating between all the down pipes available for this car and really like the sound of yours. Which down pipe do you have? From looking through the comments, I know you have a catted one which is going to be the same route for me. I have a golf r but I assume it'll mostly be the same sound.
Resonator without mufflers still loud? And if so I have a straight pipe exhaust with resonator and mufflers, how can i find mufflers for a 4 pipe customer exhaust tail (straight pipe)
I'm getting to an age, or my ears are, that I have an appreciation for quieter exhausts. See my Baun Performance playlist for some tests that I did with the owner. Today, I find myself contemplating a return to the stock downpipe, just to curb the sound a tad. Thanks for visiting!
@@StealthGTINo problem...I can relate! I did put it on my diesels and ford taurus, the drone noise sucks especially in a 3 hour round trip work route in my trucks and it get to be not fun after a while!!
Yes, I think the tone is nice and deep, just like stock... definitely no rasp and perhaps just a hint of drone around 2900 rpm. The video does not lie. :-) Thanks for visiting! -Scott
I have a 2.0 TSI 280hp passat with the stock cat. So my setup is stock cat - vibrant short resonator - exhaust cutout. I just wanted to get rid of the vibrations and the raspyness, but that little vibrant resonator works too well and makes the car almost too quiet... hope it will get a bit louder after a while xD
HAHA! Yes, I understand. I think some of the tone you seek will return once the corners of the enclosure and the baffling gets a bit of soot accumulated. I don't think my setup was as quiet after a year. Thanks for visiting!
Thanks for the info. Do you have a clip of the cold start? And, does this Vibrant resonator help with it? I have the CTS catted Dp, stage 2 tuned. But the cold start is incredibly loud "for me". I looking for a way to cut that in half if possible. thanks again for posting.
I don't think I have a cold start video. I cannot make one, either, since my exhaust has changed since making this video. Do you have the DP and then factory parts after that? If yes, then I think replacing the factory resonator ("front muffler") with the Vibrant resonator will yield the same benefit as what I shared here. Good Luck!
I might, assuming that you have dual exhausts. I went through a series of experiments that has brought me back to more exhaust components to reduce the noise. I got tired of the noise REALLY fast. It turns out that the downpipe is the bulk of restriction. If I was tuning today, I'd leave the exhaust alone. It's very expensive to fix a mistake there. HAHA! Thanks for visiting!
I have a resonator delete on a Leon mk2. The pipe itself is 16”. I want to fit in a 17930, which is 18”. Is it a bad idea to take of 1” of the ends on the 17930?
Not at all! In fact, the resonators on my Baun Performance "Stealth Dual" has an inch or two trimmed from their ends. See my "Baun Performance" playlist to see photos. Take Care!
Is drone noticeable to the people outside the vehicle or is it mainly an interior issue? I just got a free flowing exhaust installed on my car and from the revs I heard at the shop it sounded great... however there is a lot of interior drone pretty much from everything below 4k rpm. It's strange because when I have it at WOT at high rpms it sounds phenomenal and there is no drone at all. I am planning on throwing two vibrants on my system because it is a dual setup but trying to decide which ones.. don't want to go too long and mute my exhaust and don't want to go to short and do nothing.
MY drone was subtle outside of the car. Plus, it was only in the narrow bandwidth of 2800-3300 rpm. So, everything was good outside of that area. To be honest, it's all a crap-shoot... or an experiment, depending on how you want to label it. The engineers who designed our factory exhausts are pretty smart. Everything we do to alter the tone deviates from their design and requires new experimentation. Good Luck!
Why didn't you leave the stock res and add the vibrant towards the s type bend.. There's plenty of room. I added a MagnaFlow round one there, eliminating the drone period.
Travis - I can't imagine how it would have fit. The stock resonator is backed right against the "S". See a photo at stealthgti.files.wordpress.com/2018/02/frontmuffler-e1519503211880.jpg. Regardless, I'm pleased with the Vibrant. Thanks for visiting! -Scott
Love the video man I have a quick question. I have an 18 inch magnaflow on my maxima where the stock resonator used to be and I have a muffler delete. I can hear the drone really bad behind the rear axle and also the exhaust is a little loud especially cold starts and low rpms. I wanted to add two of these near the back and was wondering if this will better help drone or volume? My exhaust currently is probably a 8/10 in volume which I want to lower to a 6/10. Would this help or just drone? Thank you in advance!
I couldn't tell you with certainty. Perhaps contact Baun Performance and ask. He should have an idea since he's worked on more than just VWs. Good Luck!
Hey man. My civic 8th is on a full exhaust system. It's loud but just okay -- on the outside. But inside the cabin, the drone is insanely loud it literally hurts my ears. I was recommended to place another resonator (a total of two resonators would be installed then). My concern is, by having 2 resonators would it affect the setup of my full exhaust? Would it be significantly quieter? And Most importantly, would it guarantee to reduce (or eliminate) the drone? If this helps, My current resonator is 22". I'm not yet sure what size would be placed for the second resonator
I would imagine that replacing your current resonator with one that's tuned for your car might work better than adding another one. I recommended contacting Jake Baun via his channel (Baun Performance) or his FB page. Thanks for visiting.
On a 2016 TT, I tried to do this with a 17950 3" resonaator on my unitronic downpipe but there wasn't enough clearance. Too close to the heat shield and drive shaft, unfortunately. Still looking for a solution to kill the drone. I didn't want to replace the stock resonator. Please send me a comment if you have any ideas.
Logan - Check out my article at stealthgti.com/2018/04/09/vibrant-17950-resonator/. In short, your stock resonator was designed to work with your factory system. A downpipe changes the resonance, which drives a need for a different resonator. As a result, you'll get better results by replacing the stock resonator for one designed to work with your new frequencies. See the article for more details. Thanks for visiting! -Scott
If you still have the vibrant resonator, try "clearancing" one side with a hammer, just enough to clear your heat shield. It may still work well enough.
What's the reason for not going with the ultra quiet vibrant resonator? Will I have similar results doing so? Better? Worst? I can't decide, I want my car to be as quite as possible while having a catted downpipe w/stock catback Any help will be much appreciated.
Jake Baun of Baun Performance specifically recommended against it. I'm assuming he's tested a number of combinations before settling on this resonator. He's not hard to find in FB or GolfMk7.com if you want to get more details from him. Thanks for visiting.
Baun Performance's own testing revealed that the round resonator mounts better in THIS position than the UQ. The UQ works well for a different type of sound at the back of the car. Thanks for visiting!
So I have a 19’ Challenger SXT with Flowmaster 10s and resonator deletes, if I put vibrant resonators on it, will it relieve some of that drone as well? It also gets kind of annoying at certain rpms as well inside the car.
I would think a resonator would help. But it would have to be the right one. I chose the Vibrant, and a specific one at that, because of testimony on how it performs on other cars just like mine. I'd do some searching on Dodge/Mopar forums to see how others are combatting drone on their Challengers. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that V6s have or need a different solution than V8s. Thanks for visiting.
Yesterday had a 3.5 CTS catted downpipe installed on my S3, and stage 2 Uni ecu/tcu. I love the power! Problem I have is that prior to stage 2 I had factory resonator delete - it sounded amazing! Now with stage 2, and catted down pipe and res delete, the exhaust sounds ricey! Dare I say, it sounds like I’m driving a Civic with an eBay turbo kit lol... there’s not really any drone, and I coded off my soundaktor... but exhaust sounds raspy and ricey when I get on the pedal. Even the slightest. You think if I put the stock res back on I’ll be okay? The other option is going with an inexpensive resonated catback system from CTS or MBRP.
The stock resonator is tuned for the resonance of the stock system. Once you start changing components, then you need to find a different resonator to compensate for the change. Good Luck!
A lot of my driving is in city settings, where I frequently accelerate gently with traffic, which runs right through what I call "the Drone Zone." Check out this video where I let someone else drive my car (with updated exhaust) and share his comments: ua-cam.com/video/P5u6_ARlK9o/v-deo.html. The exhaust is good when cruising, though. Thanks for visiting!
Thank you for this informative video! I have a stock 2004 Nissan Armada which has a V8 and 3 inch pipe. I have owned it since new and love the car but hate the drone that I hear inside the cabin at typical cruising speeds. My desire it to eliminate this drone and hope to make this car as quiet as possible. Would this resonator do that for me or do I still need to dig deeper? I am trying to find a relatively simple and cost effective solution.
Dan - I'm not certain. Is your system stock? My GTI's exhaust is modified with an aftermarket downpipe. Therefore, I had already deviated from the sound management that engineers had designed. This resonator has been tried and tested in my application and proven to be effective. If your Armada is stock, it's tough to say how this resonator will affect your sound. Perhaps someone in a Nissan forum has tested something they know to be effective? If you want to experiment, the Vibrant resonator is an inexpensive way to get started. But I'd search for things known to work with your application. Good Luck! -Scott
I have a Hyundai Veloster N base and i added a aftermarket down pipe 4 inch inlet 3 inch out let , catty removed muffler deleted , aftermarket magnaflow muffler and ultra quiet vibrant resonator. if i would of know any better, i would of gone with what you did. but mine sounds amazing no drone either also lost my pops and bangs a bit but the drone was killing me ..
It gets even worse with a turbo upgrade since the exducer is larger. Soon, I will release a video which features a variety of exhaust upgrades from "loud" to "nearly stock," all of which feature 3-inch piping throughout. Stay tuned! Thanks for visiting.
I have a regular golf. Mk6 5 cylinder 2.5 with a 2.5 inch catback exhaust. Will this resonator also help reduce the drone on my set up since its a 5 cylinder non turbo? Thanks!
I cannot say for sure. I bought this resonator due to its reported reputation the EA888. I think the resonator may help, but I also don't think it's an apples-to-apples comparison. Good Luck!
Rachelle - Unfortunately, I cannot answer that. I based my comment about the UQ on what Jake had reported in the GolfMk7 forums. I have no doubt that he's tested many setups. Thanks for visiting. -Scott

Awesome! Looking to do this on a different vehicle as I found out the chamber muffler has serious drone around 1800rpm. Was also considering running 2 chamber mufflers in line.
I have a 2020 X5 with straight pipes and the drone is killing me (it sounds amazing on local) do you think this resonator will kill off all the droning as well? My car is a V6 twin turbo
Hard to say. I installed this resonator because a VW discussion forum member with A LOT of experience said that it would work on the GTI. I cannot speak to how it will tame a different engine. I recommend finding a discussion forum that's specific to you car and seeing what experts in there say. Thanks for visiting.
I agree that the weld was terrible! However, there was going to be a reducer in the system someplace because the downpipe is three inches. I chose and provided the 3-inch resonator just in case I decided to upgrade the axle-back exhaust in the future. As it turns out, I did upgrade. Will a Aftermarket vibrant help ? Do u have any knowledge of that ? 1792? Bullet ? Ultra quiet ?
Young - I cannot comment on what the Vibrant will do with your setup. However, it may help. In short, a resonator contours the tone of the sound and a muffler controls the level of the sound. I've read that Vibrant's "Ultra Quiet" is NOT the way to go. I chose the 17950 based on plenty of positive feedback. Thanks for visiting. -Scott
You're right, it's not bad. I even said as much in the video. But I was pleased to find a solution that evened-out the tone without sacrificing performance. Win-win! Thanks for visiting! -Scott
Hey man not to hurt Jakes feelings but you should of went with the Ultra Quiet vibrant.. I have a Cobalt SS with a 2.0 Supercharged engine and had terrible drone. That fat muffler changed it. Also look into changing your header for a long tube for maximum torque and best acceleration and change that pipe from the header clear back to either 2.5 inch or 3 inch. You want best exhaust flow to reach all that horsepower that little engine has to offer. If you even have the car still... That is.
Lol mark you don't understand the MQB platform clearly. We don't even have headers. What works on one car will not work on all cars. The 17930/17950 is engineered in such a way that specifically works best to reduce drone for the MK7. Many have tried the ultra quiet and it doesn't perform as well on our platform.
John - Although I didn't state it in the video (I mentioned it in the description), the APR downpipe and Stage 2 programming gave the car much more low end torque than I'm willing to give up by going back to stock. This simple resonator tamed the pointed drone at 2800-3000 rpm without losing any power. It was a win-win! Plus, the resonator is not expensive at all. Thanks for visiting! -Scott
StealthGTI ah ok thanks for the clarifications. I'm running an axle back SS exhaust on my mazda 6 and it helped the overall power but my drone is the typical 2500-2900 that V6s have. I'm thinking about side branch hemoltz

The author of the topic does A LOT of exhaust work, so I trusted his judgement. I have a 6MT, so no "DSG farts." But I do get an occasional gurgle. Thanks for your comments and thanks for visiting! -Scott
Might be a little late, but it answers the question.
pulled directly from the write-up:
"In short, believe the hype! The Vibrant standard 17950 or 17930 resonator, not the “Ultra Quiet” series, WILL curb unwanted drone in our cars with an aftermarket downpipe. At just $77 through Amazon, it is possibly the most effective solution for the money!"
Perhaps the writer thought the ultra quiet series is just too expensive to justify the gains
I have a Catless downpipe and what’s basically a Straight pipe catback with a 17950 vibrant resonator and I love it 💪🏽
Great comparison. You can certainly hear the difference. That drone was quite noticeable prior to the resonator install.
Thanks! Still loving the car and the sound. Thanks for visiting! -Scott
the vibrant to remove the drone, but the noise is the same or is it less loud are the exhaust?
This setup does not make the exhaust more quiet; it only removes the peaky drone between 2800-3500 rpm. Thanks for visiting!
@@StealthGTI ok thanks for reply
Thanks for the video, Stealth. Just got my downpipe installed today and noticed the same drone. After all this time are you still happy with the Vibrant resonator?
Yes. The suppression is less effective after a while since the packing will eventually wear-in and/or accumulate some soot. But it's still quieter than before. Thanks for visiting!
@@StealthGTI Yes sir. Just got my Vibrant 17930 installed today. It did exactly what it was supposed to. Super happy driving home
Hi there! Thanks for posting this video. I'm debating between all the down pipes available for this car and really like the sound of yours. Which down pipe do you have? From looking through the comments, I know you have a catted one which is going to be the same route for me.
I have a golf r but I assume it'll mostly be the same sound.
I have an APR downpipe. Thanks for visiting.
@@StealthGTI thank you 😁

Resonator without mufflers still loud? And if so I have a straight pipe exhaust with resonator and mufflers, how can i find mufflers for a 4 pipe customer exhaust tail (straight pipe)
I'm getting to an age, or my ears are, that I have an appreciation for quieter exhausts. See my Baun Performance playlist for some tests that I did with the owner. Today, I find myself contemplating a return to the stock downpipe, just to curb the sound a tad. Thanks for visiting!
That Golf sounds awesome !!!
Thanks!
@@StealthGTI : Your Welcome.
try adding a 'Helmholtz' resonator to it too.....
Thanks for the note. I'll look into that. Thanks for visiting! -Scott
@@StealthGTINo problem...I can relate! I did put it on my diesels and ford taurus, the drone noise sucks especially in a 3 hour round trip work route in my trucks and it get to be not fun after a while!!
So you have the vibrant resonator with the stock muffler? And with your current setup do you still have a deep tone but without the rasp and drone?
@@StealthGTI lol i drove it now for a 3 hour journey and it is defenitely loud enough. The dsg farts are not farts but more like a farty-gun shot xD
Good Luck!
I have a question, on my lexus i have muffler delete, so i have a lot off drone, i think put 2 ressonator vibrant, you think this help me.
Good Luck!
@ 2:53 min I was like whaaatttt???? 😃
I love the way your car sounds man ! I love the performance without the noise! 👍
HAHA! Thanks. I think being in that Honda for as much as I drive every day would get OLD really fast. Thanks for visiting.
Any reason you picked the long round resonator vs the oval ultra quite?
Baun Performance's own testing revealed that the round resonator mounts better in THIS position than the UQ. The UQ works well for a different type of sound at the back of the car. Thanks for visiting!
Honestly. Great comparison video. 👍👍 Thank you so much.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for visiting.
Did you end up fixing the drone?
Bravo.........they should build one that can be adjustable .....vacuum........put a piston inside........changeable resonator.......cheers
WOW! I'm behind on my replies! Those upgrades would add substantial cost to the resonator. Mine is still running well. Thanks for visiting!
Good Luck!
Why would you worry about drone that doesn't occur at cruising rpm...?

Will the resinator reduce some power ?
No. It simply provides a place for some of the sound waves to bounce around and get absorbed. It's a straight-thru design. Thanks for visiting!
Geez I can even hear the changeover when it hits 2800 RPM over my crappy tablet speaker. I can’t imagine how awful that must be inside the car.
Good Luck!

@@StealthGTI nice mate, thanks, went stage 2 and o m f g it was way too loud lol. Put a hot dog in and much better now, I can actually drive it, without the AK47.
Why was the resonator bigger than the exhaust size?
I opted for the 3-inch resonator for an easy fit to APR's downpipe, then used an adapter to fit to the stock axle-back. My thought was that I could easily add a 3-inch rear section later, which I did. See my Baun Performance CBE at ua-cam.com/video/_yVHGpKbucQ/v-deo.html for more details. Thanks for visiting.
Awesome! Looking to do this on a different vehicle as I found out the chamber muffler has serious drone around 1800rpm. Was also considering running 2 chamber mufflers in line.
Did you get the catted DP or the decattedDP?
Catted. I'm done with non-compliant mods. They are often the fastest path to CELs and other issues. HAHA! Thanks for visiting! -Scott
That weld job with the reducer looks like dog poop. Why didn't they get the proper 2.5" res and use S.S. band clamps?
I agree that the weld was terrible! However, there was going to be a reducer in the system someplace because the downpipe is three inches. I chose and provided the 3-inch resonator just in case I decided to upgrade the axle-back exhaust in the future. As it turns out, I did upgrade. The UQ is not well-suited for that location. That's why Jake recommends the 17950 instead. Good Luck!
I have the SAME issue with my mk6. Around the Same area 2800-3200 rpm is a loud buzzing Honda like drone other than that . My exhaust is louder and I love it just the initial low end sounds horrible ...I have APR downpipe to a AWE catback and cut the resonator off the catback. ..I don't wanna result in going back to regular turbo back.
-Scott
Bro its not bad at all
You're right, it's not bad.

That is.
Thanks for the note.
Why not go back.stock?
I suggest add J-Pipe to completely eliminate that drone
Thanks for the tip! I had to do a bit of reading to learn what a J-Pipe is and what it does. I can see why they're not popular in the VW community... not really much room for one under there. Thanks for visiting.

If you dont like loud exhaust why are you doing upgrades to your car
Nathan - "Loud exhaust" and "Performance" are not necessarily the same thing. I've seen plenty of cars/trucks accelerate with plenty of noise without actually accelerating brisky. HAHA! Anyway, I've added ~100 hp to my car without a significant increase in exhaust note. To me, that's a win-win. If I do a turbo swap, then I could add yet another 50 hp, for a total of 390-ish, and STILL have a relatively quiet car: STEALTH or SLEEPER. What's not to like about that? I'm in my 50's and have no need to sound like I'm compensating. ;-) Thanks for writing. -Scott
