MagnaFlow Exhaust Flowbench Test: Does a Quiet Muffler Impact Airflow Performance?

  • It seems logical that a larger, quieter muffler will have more of an airflow restriction than a smaller pass-through design. But as it turns out-that’s not always the case. And to prove it, we travelled to MagnaFlow headquarters to do some side-by-side flowbench muffler comparisons. Suffice it to say, the results may surprise you. So if you’ve ever wanted a quiet, free-flowing muffler without the noise of a traditional pass-through design, then you’ll definitely want to watch this one.

Loved this video really explained it to me in a way I understood!

Really good information. I’m definitely leaning towards a magnaflow. They are essentially just larger resonators, they are great for flow as the name implies.

For a second, I thought the whole video was going to be in black and white.

That offset offset muffler lost way more flow capacity than I would have guess, this is some amazing information! Now if you could eventually get into some acoustics nerding with Rich. I need to be able to manipulate the tone better on my projects.

Nice video! My only question would be what if you had a single inlet go dual outlet (straight thru) how would that affect CFM?

Straight through is straight through, smaller can bigger voice, simple engineering really...

Is the air your testing with room temperature passing thru those mufflers or is it hot air as it would be in real use? Would like to see this done with hot air passing thru 4 a more accurate test if possible

Don’t get too hung up on mufflers tested on a flow bench…
A lot of muffler start to shine due to the heat they create. Without the hot air from the engine they won’t perform as good…
Although, I need to know where this flow bench is located.
If there’s any one muffler that needs flow tested it’s the Flowmaster Pro Series Outlaw…
It is literally blocked with a plug which causes the air to go around into the body, which is actually more area than the plug blocks. Also, the plug creates a major drag on the backside. Creating a massive scavenge effect on the airflow…

I assume your talking about the laminar flow muffler, if so I to wanna see that reviewed in depth

I never would have guessed that an offset straight through oval muffler would have similar air flow to a generic chambered muffler (Flowmaster). I've been living a lie lmaoo.
Next thought.. I wonder how much sound levels would differ between same body size straight through muffler, center/center vs offset/offset? Obviously one would think the straight through would be louder.. But how much louder are we talking?

I just got this set up. My truck wouldn’t take Flowmaster dual exhaust on my 2020 GMC sierra 3500 double cab long box. so I had to go with the magna flow. If you’re looking for sound, this is not it. it looks amazing on the truck. It has a little sound, but I am not impressed at all kind of disappointed to be honest. Oh well.

Loud does not equal power on a stock engine.
A stock engine or engines up to 450 to 500 hp - street driven engines - make more power with 3" single exhaust.

Yes, but how many cfm depends on engine exhaust air flow. Maybe you only need 300 cfm.
It would be interested to see pressure results.
Either way, Magnaflows don't usually sound good by themselves.
