  • This is a super simple and clean way to instal a front license plate on a 2015-2017 Subaru WRX/ST for less than 10 bucks. This method requires only two #10-24 well nuts, the corresponding bolts, and washers. A drill will also make the process easier.

I drilled holes in the windshield and mounted it upside down

Thank you for this video, I found it helpful and instructive. Total install, $4 and 20 minutes.
Due to the dimensions of the WRX bumper, there are no eloquent solutions to mounting a front plate IMO. I did not want to drill the bumper and the orientation of the US mounting points would have left the plate too low anyway. FYI, the existing holes in the bumper are 8/14" apart and the standard US license plate is 12"-12 1/16" across, so to find center, holes are tapped 1.90" from the edges of the plate. Vertical orientation is left to preference, I tapped 3 1/4" from the top and was pleased with the result.

Thanks for the info! I don't care about drilling the bumper of my 2009 Impreza, so at the 0:30 part of your video I had it figured out. I didn't see the dimples! I didn't look very hard mind you, but now I'm legal in Texas. It took 2 free (I already had them) self tapping sheet metal screws and maybe a minute of my time. Nice workaround for those who don't want to damage their lovely cars though.

super nice vid - I have a 2018 and mounted it up higher like that out of the way of the cooling and not kidding it take s2 degrees off the oil temps. Just shows how just the plate location can effect cooling.

Thanks! I used this method on my 2018 STI and it worked great. The tow hook mount was too pricey and I wasn't a fan of how it was off to the side.

Just put a rubber protection at the back of the plate so that it won't scratch the paint of the bumper when you're driving high speed

Here is the Subaru bracket for the original holes on the bumper. Your idea is cheaper and looks more clean. Mine had the holes in the bumper already.

What size is the bolt? I’ve ordered the well nuts but wanted to make sure I have the right size.

10-24 well nuts don’t fit on my subie. they’re too large and I even tried to lubricate it but it still wouldn’t work. I have literally tried everything. I have a 2015 subaru impreza base model

Nice idea, but what if your bumper does not have any holes at all? Another thing, since your inserts are just pressed in, anyone can just pull this off and steal your plate. Beautiful car though. Thanks for sharing your idea.

You could’ve just drilled new holes in the plate. Much easier.

orrrrrrr buy a license relocation kit on amazon for $10....... and have a cleaner look........

    • @superduperkid3143

Orrrrrrrrr not. Once you relocate you have to either put a plate delete or plugs. Some people even have dealer drilled holes. It does NOT look cleaner at all. They sell plate adapters so his way is still too extra, all it is is a screw in. About 20 bucks no drilling and you avoid needed a plate delete or bumper plugs.

You spend money on a nice car and be cheap in relocation of the plate. Spend the coin on a relocator kit. The car deserve it. In some states and provinces. Disfiguring a plate is damaging government property.
