Packing up or setting up in the rain sucks. There’s no way around that. The only thing you missed about packing up in a one man tent while it’s raining is that it helps to already be a yoga instructor. 😂🤣🦑
Great tips and video Brad. Packing up in wet conditions is always unpleasant. I like it almost as much as hiking in the rain! LOL. Take care and have a great day.
Sometimes, you can take the inner part of your tent down while the fly is still on. Then you don't have to worry about it getting rained on while tearing down. Great video, Crow!!!
Excellent point JK. I wish I had mentioned that. I have actually done that and it works well. Appreciate it! Thanks for watching this one my friend! Let’s go to the Sipsey! 😊🙏
I'm not a ground dweller but I think tent campers could benefit from carrying a tarp just like hammock campers do. Especially in the rain, wind, snow etc... Yes I know it would be an added pound or so but totally worth it. And you could even use the tarp in the trekking pole configuration as a large vestibule for sitting, cooking or packing up your gear in the rain👍 From a hammock guy thinking outside the "box" 😂
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING I have a multi-use item that I've used many times called the Foxelli poncho/rain fly that can be folded out and used as a ground sheet for your tent or hammock, can be set up in a rain fly configuration, and also used as a rain poncho on the trail, and it weighs about a pound! Can't ever go wrong with multi use! 👍
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKINGSetups in the rain was a huge factor for buying my silpoly Durston Xmid. I'm also a snakeskin hammocker but needed a tent. Now just have to deal with crawling in/out of my tent in the rain to take a midnight leak. 😄
Great tips. Some NatureHike tents like the Cloud Up allow you to pack the inner while inside. There's pole attachments on the ground sheet to allow this. I'm a fan of exoskeleton tents. With the Vik 1 and Cloud Peak 2 you can pitch and pack without getting the inside wet.
I got really good at packing in the rain in the PNW and Alaska! That came in handy on the Uinta Highline Trail last summer. Having rain gear really helps with the last part. Good info!
Thanks Christian! Yeah, I bet that Alaska trip had lots of opportunities to pack in the rain. We had a few of those in the Uintas as well. Appreciate ya. ✌️
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING Denali was amazing! I lived up there in a cabin and worked up there summer of 2005. I did many trips into the NP and State Park. This is my thoughts on Denali- "If you don't like hiking in the rain you will not like hiking in Denali" That day hiking last summer here on the UHT from Fox to Kidney really felt like I was in Denali.
What a timely video. I’m starting a 4 day trip next week with rain forecasted for 3 of those days. I pretty much do what you’re doing. My Duplex ends up getting strapped to the top of my pack until 1, the sun comes out so I can set it up and dry it out during a trail break… Or 2, if it rains all the way to my next camp, set it up, dry out the inside and keep on camping! Thanks for the video.✌️
Awesome! Yeah, that is all you can really do with the Duplex. That is what I usually do myself. I just put it on the outside and let it dry out later. Thanks for watching it. Crow✌️
We just had to do that this weekend. The Maxfield 4 has a fast pitch option so i was able to pack up the tent body while the footprint and rainfly were still up. Took a little more time but it worked! Its always a logistical nightmare when its raining!
If there is one damper about camping in a tent it would have to be the packing up in the rain. I love the tip that John Kelly mentioned about taking the inner down first. I don't always comment, but your videos do contain lots of useful information Crow. 👍🇳🇱🙋♀🇳🇿
As a new hammock camper this was my 1st trip having to pack in the rain, not going to lie, it was nice to be able to do it under the tarp. Great tips for the ground dwellers. I'm sure the person on the other side of the camera sure felt better after that! 🤣🤣🤐
I use a double wall tent and figured out how to take the inner down while still inside. Would require some gymnastic movements, patience and a ground cloth with either grommets or loops to hold the pole ends. I've had to do it several times and it works, it's just not fun.
In the past, we have carried a "Community Tarp" to sit under while it rains, so then we would take turns breaking our tents down under the tarp. We would do the same for setting them up in the rain. Of course, now we mostly use hammocks if we can hang. So that simplifies things a good bit.
Thanks Crow! Packed up in the rain this morning. Got everything packed up inside my tent. Covered my pack outside with my umbrella. Problem: Had to move the umbrella to pack the fly and poles. Keeping the pack dry when packing the fly and poles seems an impossible task. It got wet and soaked my back under the poncho. I wore the poncho instead of my rain shell for better sweat control. Thoughts?
Hmmm…that is a tough one. What I have done if late is to carry a small tarp, when it isn’t a huge weight penalty, and I know it a going to rain. I put it up next to the tent…basically like having a place to pack everything under it. Might be an option. Sorry you got soaked! That stinks! 😊🙏
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING 🤣🤣 nothing wrong with that brother I love my tents but with my back the way it is my DD hammock wins out most times but I got an ultralight cot as a gift from my wife I gotta try it out so maybe I can get back to doing more tent camping 🏕️ 😁👍👊🌲🔥⛺️🌳
I've moved towards tents that are pitched fly first....if it's bad out, I can just remove the inner tent and pack in bag. then the rain fly gets packed separately.
I got the contractor bags at Lowe’s years ago. I bought a box of them, but, they are so durable, they have held up for a long time. Thanks for watching this! Crow✌️
Great Video! Breaking down in the rain always sucks.. no matter what… once you step out that tent your getting wet in some sort of fashion 😂 LET IT RIP! 😂 best blooper ever 😂
How can you keep the body of the tent dry after you take off the rain fly? When it's really coming down, there's no escaping from getting the tent wet, right?
The tent I used for this has a way to unbuckle the inner tent from the rain fly and poles. So, you undo the inner…put it in your back, then take down the rain fly. I just throw the two fly in the net of my big pocket on the outside of my pack. I didn’t explain that too well in this video. Thanks for watching it. Crow✌️

With freestanding tents and that type of material, it’s definitely going to weigh more after it gets wet. Drying out the tent on trail and and hike takes time too. I dry my DupleXL out in the sun and off the ground if possible to expedite drying out.
