I honestly feel bad for you ground dwellers when hammocks are so much more amazing. I understand that sometimes tents are better for certain trails, but I see such nice trees in the background that would be great for hammocks. I mean you have a tarp deployed. My last tent was a Z-packs plexamid, but the last three years I fell in love with hammocks. Such better sleep and more versatility. Dutchware gear has awesome stuff. I have multiple and even an ultralight hammock setup that is a pound and that includes tarp and hammock. Time for you to try something new and get in the know about hammocks and stick with it for a year! Another awesome video Justin. Thanks for the content.
Big Elbow is much nicer since the renovations. Good tips! Nice to see another backpacking campground nearby and really a good hike that is short and pretty low elevation gain for beginners or as a bikepacking location.
Hi Justin. I’d love to see a short vid on how you setup tarps like the one over the table. Thanks for all the great advice and gear reviews. Keep’em coming. Love from Minnesota ❤️
After endless hours of hiking in rainy conditions in the PNW and elsewhere, I've found the best option to be an umbrella unless it's also really cold and/or windy in which case I'll use my Gore R7 Shakedry. I've gone back and forth between rain chaps and rain skirt, the skirt is my preferred right now due to ease of use and it also functions as a groundsheet, but doesn't work as well in wind. Rain pants are a no go for exactly the reason you mentioned, too hot. I've only had the Wapta on one rainy hike in the Olympics a couple weeks ago and it was fine, but I wouldn't trust it or any bag to keep things dry as I'm sure you know. You also show one issue I have with the Wapta, which is that you can't comfortably put your sit pad on the back panel as cushion/ventilation and I don't find the hot bonded mesh as comfortable. It's still a great pack though.
Hi Justin I was talking to you about the big Agnes zoom on another video, I have gotten the new pad from them and I can confirm it is a lot warmer and the milar film doesn’t drop - I think it may have just been a bad batch that we got initially
I imagine this was at least a few weeks ago - we’re heading out this weekend and I’d almost rather the cool temps than these over 30s! I’m curious if you’ve done the west coast trail before or if you have interest in doing it. It’s definitely on my bucket list, but the possibility of being soaked for a week is a bit of a deterrent!
I have two dcf tents and disappointingly they both mist through when its raining heavily. I feel the rain hitting my skin, yet I'm not wet. Eventually the inside of the fly is soaked and everything in my tent is damp.
@@Pneumaticcannon I can't be totally sure but the speed at which it happened makes me think not. The tent walls were bone dry before it started raining and I was feeling this wetness falling on my skin immediately as it started to rain. My first thought was splash back except it was coming straight down from above.
@@JaredandTasha I got a Seek Outside Silex, sat out a rainstorm in the yard, no leaks, even unsealed. I can't wait to take it on the trail (after seam sealing it).
Don’t know where you are. But looks like your out west somewhere. That good it’s going to rain instead of being chased by forest fires so common this time of year.
Would you like to set up your tent with the 'living' vestibule over a spot where for the past, lets say two months, every hiker left their mark over night?
I've camped in the backcountry over 200 nights in the past 3 years. I can count on one hand how many times it has been raining so hard overnight that I peed in the vestibule. I don't think it's as much of a problem as you think it is.
There is no such thing as a waterproof pack, even if on day one they are on-paper (seam-taped etc). With some trail miles on any pack, abrasion inside and out will either compromise the fabric or the taping or both. Even though I own two "waterproof" packs I always carry a pack liner for my down gear, electronics etc. A wet tent can then always be packed inside the pack when necessary and my dry stuff is always dry.
I think Buska’s went out of business! I’m very bummed because after training them because of you, I really liked them and they are some of my favorite backpacking meals 😢
@@SeanWalisserit would be handy if it’s not full as there are bear lockers at the campsite intended for horse feed, but one would risk being asked to move (unlikely in the shoulder season)
Your comments on down are not entirely correct. Lots of extreme ultralight waterproof down options (sleeping bags, jackets, pants, vest, etc) that are still lighter and warmer than synthetic. KUIU and Stone Glacier are 2 great options for waterproof down performance gear.
Question, your in a designated camping area, it's obviously no fire risk, why aren't you having a fire. Sorry but from another part of the world and don't understand.
Agree, don't sh!t in your nest, I believe is a saying but supposing it's raining heavily how about bringing a bottle dedicated to the purpose if you feel confident that you can manage to aim
When it's close to freezing and raining a lot, you have to change to your rain gear just to take a leak. Would rather pee there and be done fast, definitely when you only stay 1 night

Hey Justin: Just wondering when we’ll be able to get our hot little hands on one of those nifty wizzy pot lids….? Any updates on that front?
We're currently moving from prototyping into production. Hopefully sometime this year!
I have a Wapta and I use the pack liner for the reason you called out. I was waiting to post this comment to see if you called it out.
Almost 100k subs!

I have once packed the x-mid pro2+ after rain, not wiping it dry and it weighet in at 1350 grams instead of 680 (all lines and stakes included)...😢
I can confirm this, and even after a good wipe the DCF holds hundreds of grams worth of water.
If you want it to rain you have to leave the rain gear at home…and wash your car before you leave.

Where is the umbrella in the gear list?
Little known fact, you can pitch the newest hubba hubba 3 person fly first.
I am not sure if the 2p or 1p do, but the 3p does for sure
Glad they made that possible again!
Nice video 👍
I see you had your Ursack packed. Just curious, is that because you were not expecting bear boxes or do you always take it just in case?
Ya, I wasn't 100% sure I was going to camp at the campsite.

Came here to ask the same question
I believe it's a lid that he's developing/testing to eventually release on the market
I'll be able to share more about the lid very shortly :)

He’s in BC Canada during the summer, could be a complete fire ban. Common during warm months.
This area had a fire ban while I was there.

Peeing in the vestibule is disgusting. Why is it that difficult to walk 10 feet away from your tent?

Disgusting is a little strong! I think with enough nights camping in bad weather, everyone ends up doing it once or twice in their lives! 😬

It’s not good etiquette to pee in an established campsite or where someone might camp right after you. Pee in a bottle or go into woods.
If it's raining that day or is going to rain.....just pee in the dang vestibule, it's not going to smell for the next person
Very bright gay colours!
