When l was diagnosed with LOD type 1, having been on metformin for type 2 diabetes for 18 years. This was a consequence of undiagnosed hyperthyroidism, not obesity, l was actually underweight. When l was withdrawn from metformin l experienced the following. Signs of arthritic pain, which followed the pattern of my mothers long term arthritis. I seemed to have problems with cognition, especially in the area of naming, finding it hard to retrieve names for things and people. I also started with menopause symptoms where l had none before. I begged my doctor to reinstate my metformin, and all these symptoms receded.

Very Informative and helpful so competently explained by this knowledgeable Doctor. He makes it so simple and easy for a layman to understand the complexities of medical treatment for a Type 2 diabetes patient who generally cannot or not allowed to question the doctor's decision about the medicines being administered to him or her and thus, is totally in the dark about the good or bad effects of drugs prescribed to treat him.

@@robertstancliffsr9575 True, however in order for those with Type 2 DM to reverse their A1C back to normal, Sugarless and Low Carb diet along with Exercises are the key, not the Metformin.
One can be on Metformin for years or decade yet their A1C is still out of normal range.

Thank you Doctor for a very informative input. I am now a regular user of this drug Metformin 1000, at one time I was using Glucophage900 and Glucophage XR, which gave me diarrhea, I was then put on Foxziga which also gave me diarrhea. Now I am on Metformin 1000 which is fine, but there's a problem that is very embarrassing, which is flatus that causes a nasty smell, can anything be taken for this problem? Can you further explain why is it the doctors prescribe insulin and Diaglocide to be used together with this drug, the doctors don't give a clear explanation as you do?

The discussion should be why are we only treating the symptoms instead of curing the disease? T2D is carbohydrate intolerance and therefore is directly related to the diet\what you eat. Stop eating the carbs and then there would be no need for the medications.

Metformin causes lactic acidosis and deficiency in Vitamin B12 and causes the body to suffer. Metformin causes you to lose weight and look aged. Your friends will notice the change in look and physique and question whether you are diabetic. I am very grateful to a female pharmacist who whispered to me that if I exercised and stayed away from sugar, I can throw the 3 month supply of metformin that I was holding in my hand into the dustbin and I did exactly that on 10 July 2010. I have been a diabetic for 26 yrs now and exercise daily. I stay away from the sugars sucrose and fructose. You can live without fruits and vegetables. The only vegetable that I consume is the herb celery which gets rid of heavy metals in the body. The fructose in fruits affect your mitochondria and causes inflammation in the body. I am virile and healthy at age 76 yrs. A diabetic must consume soaked fenugreek seeds (one tablespoon for 24 hrs) to be virile and healthy.
Please do not touch any diabetic medicine. Exercise and avoiding sugar, MSG. caffeine, A1 cows milk, vegetable and seed oils is the key. Gluten free A2 cows milk and goats milk can be consumed.

All American cold cut meats and sausages have added sugar. I pay $$ for cold cuts from Italy that do not have added sugar and actually taste better.

DR SANJAY THANK YOU for your 9minutes:30 seconds advise.
Why are you emphasizing on medicine????
Is this the only life saving way.???
All knowledgeable individuals are aware as very high proportions of doctors are beholden to the drug industry and that many are being paid generous sums for advising companies or giving talks on their behalf.
The pharmaceutical companies then cherry pick the results to suit their marketing needs, instead of what’s in the best interest
    of patients.

As a formerly muscular, now thin and fit type 2, metformin never did much for my diabetic health. I suffered just using metformin for more than 5 years, with my symptoms only getting worse while my A1C stayed around 6.0 as long as I starved myself to death. Dropped from 200 down to a scary looking 160 (6 foot tall). No doctor I spoke with would allow me to start insulin because according to them, my A1C was within range. When the depression finally became unbearable and I was considering extreme measures, I discovered that certain insulins don't require a prescription. I immediately started myself on NPH, one shot per day at night, and WOW, what a difference. My A1C has dropped, my muscles have start to come back, and I feel so much better. I've stopped metformin because there's no need to use it anymore, and I'll happily stay on insulin because it has made me feel so much better.

The doctor ran an insulin adequacy test (forgot the actual name) and found the diabetes is type 2 and prescribed Synjardy (a combo drug) but the side effects were severe. So, she put me on regular metformin and my sugar levels are down along with diet changes. I do find the levels dropping below Zero but mostly stay in the 80s region at night but it seems metformin is working. My continuous glucose monitor is always showing lower number than my blood glucose monitor. For example, when it snows me 80 the blood glucose reading shows above 100. So weird. I have been taking metformin for 35 years for type 2 diabetes. Most of that time 2x1000mgs daily. No side effects until recently, and it might be causing constipation. Or, maybe that is being caused by being 79 years old? Easy to fix with a stool softener.
Also, 79 is 5 years older than the next oldest person in my immediate family lived to be. I have no idea if that is because of the metformin, but I have no intention of stopping it. For me it works great, and it's free with my insurance. Highly recommended...

A recent trial presented at ADA showed that metformin was used for 21 years in prediabetes It made no difference go their CVS risk hence its place in first use is questionable Yes it can be added on later on top of SGLT2 and DPP4

Thank you for the complete review of the topic. I was prescribed Metformin, and I just simply can not tolerate it without extreme GI reactions. My GP does not care in the slightest and tells me to just deal with having accidents and spending hours in the bathroom every day. This is one of the reasons that I won't take it, and I won't go back to see her for any reason. I am just done fighting this nonsense. There is no quality of life once you are diagnosed with diabetes, it seems.

I had the same, when I read, that you should try taking metformin with meals instead of after, as prescribed by two different doctors. since then I didnt have GI dsisturbances till 3 months, Once the dosage was upped to 3 x 500mg per day, My gut health went for a toss.

Many diabetics forget that a single day of having way too high bsl can cause damage to the fine blood vessels including those in the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy can start any time with uncontrolled sugar levels. And even if you are keeping it within a good range, one has to remember keeping blood pressure and bad cholesterol in check. And this applies to all people whether diabetic or not. Retinopathy can happen to those without diabetes.
