  • American director Mitchell Farkas, British director Arthur Jones, Japanese director Takeuchi Ryo, Chinese director Chengye Kang, and Cambodian director Sibxy na PANH, together tell the story of Gaokao in China's five different places.
In the face of great pandemic, 2020's Gaokao project has ended. As the next generation of graduates turns to face the challenges of the future, perhaps the Gaokao of 2020 will be remembered as the moment a country came of age.

I took Gao Kao in 2014, currently in a PhD progamme in the US. I'd say Gaokao is, for the kids at that age, the amongst the most important things, and of course the most stressful exam in their life. Even today, I some times dreamed myself on the exam site and cannot finish the exam on time, and wake up keep telling myself, i passed that stupid exam and I'm in a Phd program. Slightly PTSD, i'd say.

wow this is a very touching documentary. Especially the "sacrifices" part. My family is from China but they immigrated to Germany, so I never took the gaokao. But my parents still sacrifice a lot for me and my siblings, they work a lot so that we could be sent to private school as public schools suck here. The students in this doc are my age and seeing them work so hard makes me want to work hard as well.

Hallo👋, my parents are also from China and they immigrated to Germany. I am glad to be in Germany because my parents set education in first place and i can study here easily without having the stress to pass Gaokao. But you still have to graduate here. Public school doesn't suck at all. You just have to see and learn there are all kinds of students and sometimes it's really funny and humanity. I also don't want my parents to work hard to pay my school, because education in Germany is almost free.

Public school in Germany are pretty good to what I have heard. In Canada, it depends where you live , some are better then others and some have special programs for smart kids, and for kids whos not good academically so they have other options then university.
I have friends who went to private schools but end up going to public for high school . Only different is , private schools have higher standards, different curriculum and different teaching style , plus have less students so more one on one teaching. Also teacher have quotas to meet and if their not teaching to the school standard they get fried. Compare to public schools, no matter how stupid your teacher is , very hard to let them go since its unionized.

I'm a French student, and I'm currently studying in a master's degree . When I try to compare the two models of education between China and France, it's nearly impossible to find a common way.
In France, the high school exam (called "the baccalaureate") has almost 87% of success rate, which is high. However, during the university, the acceptance rate from a year to another is only 40%. The selection is not during the high school, but in the university. However, I feel granted because during my high school, my results were not so good, but France education system gave me a chance to succeed in university. This method in China seems impossible.
Furthermore, when I did my semester exchange in Shanghai, I have seen the seriousness of Chinese students in university and their ultimely devotion in their studies; they did a tremendous work in order to succeed and fulfill their dreams. They are so mature, intelligent and humble at the same time. But, when I talked with those students, a question brought me in my head: are they happy?
Since their earlier age, they must work, study, with no precise plan about their future. They also lack of a certain creativity and imagination, comparing to others nationality. They are the "elite" of the world, with exceptionals competencies, but at which price?
Tomorrow will be 7th June. It will be a new gaokao for 10 millions of Chinese students. They will wake up with a certain amount of stress and pressure, but they will accomplish their dreams and pursue their ambitions.
I wish good luck to all these Chinese students, but also in all students in the world, no matter their nationality. We are all in the same boat: we just try to follow our personal dream through the studies.
Very interesting documentary, thanks for the sharing.

When someone trains to be a basketball player, he's not thinking about swimming. • @farhadnejjad9947

@peter pan You are wrong as well, if you would consider the large population of students, (which by the way is one of the highest in the world) and the limited amount of university seats, there needs to be an difficult exam that will filter out the students, and thus making the selection process easier for universities. If the exam were easy and everyone did well, then, the selection process would be virtually impossible to keep up with during the seasonal openings. Furthermore I've met many chinese-born people who took Gaokao and a majority of them are some of the brightest people I've ever met, and definitely do not lack innovation.

Its the same system we've been using in the UK, Australia etc. for decades, the difference is that in China this exam is significantly more competitive with 10 million students doing this test at the same time, that's why this test isn't about basketball or anything else, it's strictly about the subjects they've studied, which makes it a fair system. Creativity and innovation happens in universities, that's why China has 6 universities in the top 100 while India has ZERO.

-A singular test thats influenced by other subject areas. You could be amazing at math, but terrible at language arts. The result is the university wont recruit that type of talent.
-GaoKao type systems FORCE students to give up all their free time and experiences they would have in school in exchange for a good grade.
While this seems good, what really happens is you have people with similar experiences, personality and opinions all coming into positions of power.
In a complex adaptive systems like the economy, a lack of diversity in decision making is a ticking time bomb. Thats how recessions and bubbles happen.
-Theres a point where accepting students above a specific grade, has diminishing returns in terms of how innovative they are.
-Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Jeff Bezos didnt make industry giants out of writing an exam and doing everything by the book. They were succesfull because they thought outside the box, and put money towards ideas that no one else was thinking of. Theres a reason why Shenzhen can never be the same as silicon valley.

Well not tryong to compare but Gaokao is harder than jee/neet. Well well hear me out first, jee/neet is only given by science students that too they have an option of giving it or not, completely depends on the students and here in India luckily students are given the chance of choosing their stream right after 10th board examination right? But in China EVERY STUDENT has to give that damn exam for attending a top elite college, like you are literally competing with the WHOLE NATION'S STUDENTS (high school) which makes it 100x more harder plus this exam is mostly conducted for students to literally get good marks , so that they can choose their stream. Crazy right?

Lucky them, they sit one major exam! In my country we sit 3 major exams which determine what your life will be country wide. We go through that exact pressure 3 times at 13 for primary , at 17 for O levels and 19 for A levels. Imagine sitting Gao Kao at 13 years, to determine which High school you will attend. The very best get the best high schools which gives them an advantage to get in to the best University
So at 13 years your life is determined.
However after the O levels you sit another set of "Gao Kao" to determine where you will have your A levels.
A good number of students switch from the best to 2nd or 3rd best you have to score very highly to remain in the best high schools.
There are very few students who manage to move from 2 ND best to the best. Then A levels final exam.
Students from the best high schools are mostly competing for what course you will be admitted to at the best University. Not for chances to get to the university. Because 95% get in.
Unfortunately in my country the High school you attend determine or influence the "doors" opportunities opened for you in future.
So at 13 years your future is pre determined technically.
You go for job interviews, and one of the questions asked " which school did you go to? Meaning which high school?
And that can determine if you get in or not.

So much pressure put onto these kids. Even though the pressure is on from a place of love. The more the parents invest, the more the kids want to hide their feelings so their parents don't worry.

Let’s not even address the corruption relating to the gaokao, it’s quite the interesting topic. The gaokao is different among different provinces and the historically poorer areas often get much harder exams in order to keep them poor and keep them working menial jobs, and there is no exam score equation between the easier and harder exams.

This documentary shows a yikao person but not the yikao. Art students have to take yikao, which are art exams, plus the gaokao

Also the yikao falls on different dates depending on each university. For instance, a typical yikao for Drama students usually takes part in February and have two stages. The first round, called chushi, involves a student performing an exerpt (from a film/play) of their choice, or recite a poem/paragraph (called "lang song" in Chinese). In the second round, called fushi, the student will have to role-play individually or in a group in an exerpt selected by the judge panel. Students are sometimes required to have their makeups removed to ensure the accuracy of their facial expressions.
The yikao results are often released by March, which means by then students will know if they are accepted into the program. However, they wil still have to take the Gaokao in June to complete all the requirements for admission. This means if they pass the Yikao but fail the Gaokao, they cannot be admitted.

it would be interesting to know who paid for this film. There is a reluctance to name The Cultural revolution as the reason why gaokao was suspended.
