Imagine this, you live in the 2000s and you don't need to make a physical invention, discovery or produce something new to make yourself stand out, you review the product and upload videos to UA-cam and people find you successful.
It’s extremely common that successful alumni come back to give a speech and receive an honorary PhD? I feel like a lot of the time the people chosen are less famous than MKBHD.
"Purpose is a tool." I love this and thank you for not putting all the emphasis on telling them they should only do what "makes them happy". Success is harder than that.
Your speech was really touching, and you picked up on the most important point, I believe. Most people, including myself a couple of decades ago, start out with goals like making good money or, if self-employed, thinking about independence. These can work for many, but real satisfaction comes from a holistic approach: working on things you truly love day in and day out. Because at the end of the day, we have to realize that life is a marathon rather than a sprint. Great job!
Your insights not only cater to the graduating students, but to all of us on the broader path of life. We should indeed appreciate the present, and simultaneously, explore our passions for a meaningful future.
Congrats to you Marques and all the best to you. Great speech. Time does fly very quickly. It’s funny - I worked in engineering and IT for 25 years and then became a professor of engineering for 15. I recently retired. In some ways, it seemed as though certain things in life took FOREVER to happen, yet looking back, it feels like such a short short time. When. I was getting my Masters I nearly quit because it was taking too long and taking up too much time. I went to the Dean and told him I was going to drop out. He reached under his desk and brought out a very large stack of paper. I asked him what that was. He told me that these were students who started but dropped out. He told me that 5 years from now you’ll look back at now and realize that 5 years has passed whether or not you do your degree. You can decide now to continue and in 5 years you’ll be glad you did. I stuck with it and later went on to get my PhD. It was a lot of work but it allowed me to do things in life that would not have been possible had I not kept going. To all those who are graduating in 2024 - congrats! To those struggling or thinking of stopping - remember that in 5 years you’ll be 5 years older independent of your choice. Time does fly when you look back at life. Marques is right, too about passion. I worked in electrical and computer engineering, starting when personal computers were just getting started. (I am the same age as Bill Gates and the same age that Steve Jobs would have been). I was always passionate about computers and technology. It was and is my hobby. I also made it my career. It’s much easier to make a career out of something you deeply care about. Find your passion.
