Yellowstone grizzly 791 defends elk kill from grey wolf

- The famous bear 791 has been milking the spotlight this week. After a viral video of him taking down a 6-6 bull elk in the Yellowstone River, he has sun bathed for the last 5 days to the view of hundreds of photographers and tourists.
I was very fortunate on this particularly morning for several reasons. The first being that the weather wasn’t terribly cold (about freezing), we had a gorgeous sunrise, the river fog was light and low unlike the day before when it didn’t clear until late morning), and of course, because we had a close encounter with a grey wolf.
The wolf was alone and therefore not much of a threat to the massive grizzly. It was more of a game to him to see how close the dominating bear would let him get to his kill. To my surprise, as proven by this video, he let him get very close. The wolf would slowly approach, the bear would make a slight shift in position, and the wolf would back off for awhile. This cycle occurred 4 times in my watching.
That bear is an absolute unit.
The amount of wildlife in this short video is pretty incredible.
The bear starting digging the wolfs grave I reckon
No grizzly like to bury there kills to save it he stopped because the wolf was there funny to think of it like that tho I had a chuckle
lol!
By god
Nah....Bears are huge and strong, but slow...A Wolf can easily run away/outmaneuver any Bear and the Bear wouldnt have much chance in catching a Wolf....Canine agility is far superior to Bear agility.....
@@briancarbonelli8978 bears can run faster than a race horse for a short period of time. They are also not as slow in agility as most think
I’m surprised he let him stick around, he must be too stuffed to fight.
Tbh I think he was jus baiting lool... that wolf tail tho😭😂
You’ve got to pick your battles. Every move is calories.
0:07 Flipping thing is stuffed as a Thanksgiving, 🦃
Look at him yawn at 3:13
That bear looked like “ you woke me up for this??”
If that wolf's tail was tucked farther between its legs it'd be its tongue.
Dang that's funny😂
The wolf appears to be solo, outside a pack, and desperate at this point for food.
I think it's an omega wolf, who left the pack - often they do it, cause of the violence of the other members - and is starving.
@@giupetr968 Listen, I'm not picking a fight with you, but what you're saying is an old misconception about wolfs bullying the omega of the pack. Thing is; those misconceptions are old and based on wolves in captivity, they aren't like that in the wild. It's very similar to humans in that sense. In the wild they're living in family groups and they're very loving towards each other, not much if any fighting and bullying at all.
Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/y5S31HGNGSc/v-deo.html
The bear just getting up and standing tall to reveal its huge muscley frame was enough to scare the wolf away. The bear didn't act aggressively at all because it didn't need to; it knew the wolf was no threat at all. Ps: that bear was absolutely huge, btw.
That is a monster Grizzly !
They all are
You are right. To put things in perspective, that bull elk was a mature bull that probably weighed over 700 pounds on the hoof when it was alive!
It really is ,And this isn’t Alaska ,guess they get pretty big in Wyoming or where ever this is to
@@eskayuxsh The elk species in Yellowstone are Rocky Mountain elk and that is a mature bull. I’m judging this based on body size and the size of its antlers. Antler size alone is not always a good indicator of age. Further more, the grizzlies in Yellowstone don’t grow to the size of the coastal grizzlies in Alaska. So, for its habitat, that is a monster grizzly.
@@eskayuxsh I’m more than aware of the existing elk species in North America. However, Roosevelt elk do NOT inhabit the Yellowstone ecosystem. Please do some research.
That bear is Huge!!
I love how the bear is so unbothered 😂
Let’s be honest here. That grizzly didn’t really have to defend anything. That wolf was not going to do a damn thing lol
Beautiful scene tho lol
Peyton S That’s still no match. The wolf would have to have the rest of the pack. The wolves frame just can’t bare the paws, strength, and weight of that bear.
@Peyton S are you hearing yourself,? No species of Tiger can take on a Grizzly one on one.
@Peyton S The tiger isn’t a fighter nor would it fight a grown male grizzly unless he was cornered. The only animal that is known root fighting is an Lion and there are hella records showing that a fight between the two can go either way depending on the males in the fight
@Peyton S actually a pissed off gorilla win or not would give it a shot and definitely not cower like a wolf.
That's just the sort of scenario I imagined might take place this week. Brave wolf! Stunning to watch the tolerance of the bear during the first minutes. Beautiful morning video. I am so glad you shared!
Compared to the size of a bull elk that bear is massive.........
That wolf also had some big balls to get that close to a freaking bear that big !
@ 1:45 bear: "go ahead I dare you" lol
I loved the way those geese pattled on by didn't even stop to watch probably saying better you than me
The crying baby really added to the natural experience.
That wolf better be careful before he gets drowned like that elk did lol
I love all the birds flying about like "okay I'ma just chill here while you guys settle it."
This bear was born in this place, and the wolf too, they know each other since childhood, that’s why this wolf comes so close to the bear.
Remarkable footage. We captured 791 and 881 later in the week. Would have loved to capture this as well. Thanks for sharing!
Bears don’t share.
Spectacular video of such amazing interaction between the bear and the wolf!
02:15
"It's over, Anakin! ... "
I have the high ground lol
Ahahahha
I was in Yellowstone in Sept. 2020 and I was there (across the river) viewing this scene with the same Grizzly guarding it's kill, but I didn't stay long enough to see the wolf.
There were crowds of people with lots of Park Rangers trying to prevent cars from stopping, so it was quite a walk from where you were allowed to park.
Bear to wolf, "I might not mind a little grit, but you best move on, you little shit!"
Those ducks swam by like in a video game
Amazing animals. I'm impressed by the size of this elk's antlers. They look massive
They are
I was in Yellowstone and I saw this bear sleeping next to the Elk the day after it happened, Video cannot explain how big this bear and elk is!
That wolf’s tail was permanently glued between its leg lol
Probably trying to hold the pee in lol I know I would if I was the wolf .
Showing insecurity, I mean who wouldn't?
That is a gargantuan bear. Look at the size of its claws! That’s a one ‘n done from one of those paws!
The wolf acting like a vegetarian 🌱 Just grazing on grass. Silly bear! Me interested in 🥩 🍖, are you out of your mind?!?
Great video quality. Thanks for sharing.
I was there for a couple afternoons. Looks like this video was taken early in the morning, right? Good capture!
Bears hate wolves like lions hate hyenas.
They are sharing the scraps with the birds
Not that kind of hate. They have some mutual respect. Lions kill hyenas just because they can, and hyenas will kill a lone lion if they get a chance.
i'll never forget the time when i was a young child eating dinner with our extended family. the food arrived, and i eagerly said "we'll be the lions and you be the hyenas!" my family members laughed, and my mom hastily said "too much Animal Planet haha." it always bothered me that she was embarrassed by me rather than proud of me. anyways there's my personal anecdote for you to promptly forget :)
@@flannelpillowcase6475 And how are things going with you and your Ma?
The Wolf was being slick he was pretending he was not trying to eat the elk he just came to eat some dirt. 😂🤣
The bear is me defending the leftover pizza from the bastard wolves I call siblings.
I was there on the Friday he had it. Got some good pictures of him. Crazy to see this in my feed!
Remember, kids - communication is 98% non-verbal!
Yellowstone is a magical place
We’re screwed. The bears and wolves are evolving the same type of relationship we once had with them but we traded them for pugs and chihuahuas. It’s gonna be bears and their wolves vs people and our wiener dogs.
And don’t forget our guns *YEEHAW GIT GIT DAT BIG OL BEAR BOA*
LoL
It’s our bullets vs there bark & roar
If the bear let the wolf have a feed he might have found a friend
Yeah if that happen bears and wolves will go extinct in about two days
saw this same thing over in new hanover the other day, was tryin to get an antique alcohol bottle to complete my collection for maddam nazar
Rdr2 needs a major update
Bear: Fuck off, it’s mine!!
Wolf: let’s see. Oh okay. See ya.
"Buddy, I'll only allow you to get so close to my grub..."
I was waiting for the bear to kill the wolf.
That wolf was so skinny....starving to even give this half a shot.....kinda sad but nature is brutal
The wolf is not skinny, just a healthy animal on its summer coat :)
@@raisal9896 are you a park ranger or veterinarian? just curious since i'm under the impression a wolf would never try something so desperate if it wasn't actually desperate
wolf's like...can I get a little help over here!
bear: grrrr
wolf: sniff sniff
human: clickclickclickclickclickclickclick
The bear waited that long to even eat his elk??? At 1:02 , they seem so calm with each other!! The wolf sniffing around and that big ass bear just laying there 😄😄
Bear was sayin i dare ya
@Blue Jazz wierdo
@@user1fja98dnaiid,
One helluva lot bigger than mine, says the Crow, lol.
Amazing! That bear Is huge!
One of the reasons why life isnt fair... Grizzlies
THAT HAPPENED TWO WEEKS AFTER A VISIT YELLOWSTONE
1:04 bear: Quit begging.
That's 1 massive bear
What a nature..........and beast. Nice video
So he did eat it! Over what period of time? 24 hrs? More?
I LIKE HOW THE WOLF IS NO BODYS FOOL AND KEEPS HIS DISTANCE AS THE BEAR GETS UP TO PRETEND HE’S JUST LOOKING FOR A SNACK
LIKE THE WOLF AND IF HIS ASS STUMBLE TO CLOSE AND
BECOME THE SNACK 😂😂😂
It’s like a 2 day old baby trying to steal candy from Mike Tyson in his prime.....like Iron Mike would say himself “Filly filly Thupid!!!!”
I was visiting yellowstone on this day missed the bear drowning the elk by 30 minutes coolest thing I've ever seen that's why you walk carefully when your not on the top of the food chain this bear guarded this kill for the whole week we were there the memory will last till the day I die
Cameras that make shutter noises are always annoying in such videos.
Bear:.....are...are you really going to try this right now, I can see you...
Wolf: im gunna get a lil piece of that elk leg and be on my way
That was one majestic old elk. What a rack.
Why was that bear laying down like that??😂😂
Probably stuffed full of elk and sleeping it off like thanksgiving dinner.
😂😂😂
This is Russian Roulette, my friends!!!!
That bear is Big, he ain't skipping no meals lol
Why was he doing all the digging ? Why did he half bury the elk?
Neither bear nor lion has any empathy when they catch up together.
That is a very big grizzly! The bull elk was a mature bull and was easily over 700 pounds on the hoof when it was alive. I think that wolf must be pretty desperate for a meal to get that close to the bear.
Fantastic video...🐻🐺🐦🌳🌲🌳🌲
If I was guessing, he can take as long as he wants to eat that elk. And get anothern before its time to sleep for the winter...:)
I believe bears cover there kill up like saran wrapping it for later lol
By “defense” you mean lays next to
Wildlife photography in the USA: standing next to 162737 other people at the edge of a street and taking shots :D
That wolf was the food inspector..but the bear was not convinced of that
Wolf was looking for a small bit that he could snatch and quickly run off with
Wolfie got balls!
Right?! At the same time though if you notice his tail between his legs you'll see how scared he is!
@@sethroyalkroft3001 Wolves carry their tail between their legs all the time, even around the pack. It's an instinctual trait. If he was so scared, he wouldn't even approached the grizzly. He's braver than any other species I know.
Blue Jazz try being a chimp like me
@Blue Jazz Yes life is rough for us bears. This human thinks hes my master, he makes us stand on our hind feet alot and gives us treats, but he did buy us a giraffe from Africa to hang out with.
The bear not defending more like, this my food now back tf up
It almost looks like he uses the Elk as bait for extra potatoes :D
I thought the bear was gonna add the wolf as a side entree
To humans and wolves. When you feel you've outgrown your welcome... leave!
Bear caught a wif of someones cologne at the end
Bear let him get close then was like.....sike!..lol
This elk bull kill has become a goldmine for wildlife interaction footage of all sorts!!!
The alpha wolf kicked him out of the pack that’s life of a lone wolf.
*kicked
@@flannelpillowcase6475 Ik I barely noticed lol
What day was this filmed? We drove by the morning of the 21st and saw crowds looking across the river at something, but were never able to figure out what.
It’s been eating on that elk for about a week now.
@@rl2769 must have been it, then! Thanks
Any idea what they are searching for on that spot?
Grizzly killed an Elk in the river drugged it the side of the water to the Bear left. Bear was covering it in dirt to hide the kill until he wanted to consume it. Search Bear Kills Elk in river you'll see
I think the Bear hiccupped and the Wolf jumped back 20 feet.
This bear was sleep 😴 🛌 😂 after the kill what a beast!
Fascinating
I pray to God that I'm never that hungry (Amen)
Looking like my #KandorSweetpea lol NICE CAPTURE YOU!!
The bear is so stuffed on elk he can hardly move. The wolf knows the bear won't give chase; maybe he's hoping the bear will pass out or not care if the wolf feeds on the carcass.
This Wolf must bê too hungry.
One fat happy bear
Great footage!!
As silly as this sounds, I was hoping the Massive Bear would allow the hungry fella a morsel or two and let him grab a piece and take off with it. Both nicely fed. 😏
But of course. .... nature don't look like a Disney movie and it's the survival of the fittest.
Or in this case, survival of the Biggest and Baddest.
Unfortunately for Mr. Wolf , that bear will guard that Kill with all he is. At least until HE decides he's done.
Incel wolf vs chad bear
Wild must have been hungry.
Where are the boundaries?
Well...
You can touch the dirt near the elk, you can stand very close to the elk, you can tip toe around the elk,....but you are not allowed to put your nose on the elk.
How hungry does a wolf have to be to try that? Of course the bear was so stuffed he barely reacted.
The wolf is just fucking with him he knows and the bear knows he aint stealing the kill.
