Huge grizzly bear hunting down an elk!

- Late in Sept of 2019, while monitoring this resident female bear as she moved through the area, she caught wind of an elk carcass from about 5 km away. Watching her track and wind the air was amazing, traveling with a purose to get to her prize. At this stage she already was huge with about six weeks to go prior to heading for the den. She had emerged that spring with her three two year old cubs, they were dispersed with the help of the presense of a male who ended up mating with her. After the mating season she now had only one belly to fill and fill it she did. Getting to this carcass was going to top her off and ensure that she'd be having cubs that winter.
As she got closer to the carcass she started picking up the scent of competition as she wasn't the first and only bear on site. A young sow with a yearling cub had found it first but was chased off by a good size young male, with contact being made as she attempted to protect the elk and her cub. In a quick squirmish the male dominated her without inflicting any damage. She retreated but would return when he would nap or head for water. With our big female now in the vicinity, she moved in on the carcass without any contention, with the other bears seemingly giving her, her space. Over the next few days the four grizzlies took turns feeding without any further altercations, but it was the female that took down the bulk of the meat. Needless to say she increased in size and weight, having incredible fat storage for a healthy pregnancy and hibernation.....giving birth to two cubs in the den in 2020. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини

Lord almighty she's a huge and stunning bear live long and safe roam free and wild as nature intended.
As massive as she is, she can probably cover ground like a sprinter. They are deceptively fast.

Also, bears are incredibly strong, incredibly fast. It's deceptive. They leisurely move around sniffing out roots and eating plants. But in a heartbeat they can really torque it up, run, fight, defend cubs, climb rocks, swim, pull down prey. Serious strength.

Awesome. Have spent a lotta years hunting in the mountains and bush that these great animals inhabit. Have been quit close to a lotta grizzly and have thank god never run into an agressive bear. They are magnificent creatures

That's awesome. Does anyone else remember when brown bears were incredibly rare to see? Same with bald eagles, now I see them regularly even down here in the AZ desert.

@@spiderreed350 no, Montana probably. I meant I see a lot of eagles in Arizona. Even 20years ago it was an incredibly rare sight. Grizzlies were rare outside of Yellowstone 20 years ago. Now they both seem to be everywhere, figuratively speaking.
We got Eagles in Alabama. And a few Black Bears. When I was a kid in the 70s just seeing a Deer was rare

The young male easily dominated the mother "without hurting her." I don't know why this surprised me & got my attention. I guess I've always assumed these battles were _always_ no-holds-barred. But it sounds like they often involve just enough force to get the point across, displaying, one might even say, "restraint?"
Did the mother charge primarily to give the cub a chance to get to safety or do you think she was truly primarily trying to hold onto the food for them?
Combination of both protect her cub and the meal. She initiated the contact and got thrown down quick. She even initiated round two, he would of just ignored her and went straight to the carcass and claimed it. There's usually a lot of posturing and noise with little to no contact. Obviously it was that bad because she returned several times and at least got some of it.

Yes, roadkill was routinely stashed well away from human activity and it was up to the bears to find....didn't take them long.
Whoa! She is a big bear. How old are they when you put collars on them? That in itself must be pretty exciting to do and actually get to touch them.
Once they go out on their own. Usually the males will leave mom's range at about 3-4 whereas the female cubs will remain and overlap the area. Depending on the size of the sub adult, they can get a ear transmitter and eventually a collar. The collar allows staff to intercept situations in which bears and people come together. In most cases the bear is shewed on to quieter locations with less activity. But its more about managing the people from doing silly things and allowing the bear to continue doing it's thing.
Tags and collar... You'd think they'd come up with a better system, like an enhanced subdermal mini-meter.
Unfortunately to get a strong signal in a mountainous region so you can track the bear, you need a battery that will be hardy and last. As cumbersome as they look, they don't impede the bear at all, just more so upset photographers more than anything. I know in Europe they were capturing bears and inserting a small thermos like transmitter into the abdomine of grizzlies, hugely invasive. The bears were left to recover in the wild after having surgery, and bears are dirty animals. The concern would be infections, or going into septic shock and dying, I'd hate to see this and sickens me to hear this was done. With the collars, bears can be monitored when their homerange is flooded with human activity like a Park setting with hikers and campers. By being able to monitor and work with the bears, it allows staff to be able to stay ahead of a bad situation from happening, usually meaning getting and keeping people back and allow the bear to travel through and feed. Anytime a bear is collared the greatest care is taken and the priority is that of the bear itself.

She didn't care about me. She was in a location that she knew I wouldn't be engaging with her, this area was closed off for the bears. She knew there was a carcass, but also knew competition was there as well.

Great work, getting all that footage of the big female closing in on the prize. Do you think that she could be pregnant? I’m a bit surprised that the young boar was able to dominate the sow so quickly.
It was her off season from cubs, meaning she booted her three 2 year old cubs in the spring of this video year, and returned to mating and trying to build her health back up. Their embryos are so small that the weight gain is insignificant. The crazy thing about bears is they have delayed implantation, meaning they won't implant until she reaches good health, if she is not healthy enough the body absorbs the embryo. If she is in good health, than her body will determine if she'll have one, two, or three. She went to den the year of the video and emerged with two in the spring, born in February.

- How many deer would a bear hunt before dying?
Uh....well it depends....Grizzlies are omnivores, like most bears. So they will eat almost anything, actually hunting and killing a deer is a lot of work and not always successful. Every bear is different. Also where they live and what food is available to them. They are quite capable of killing several deer or elk through out they lives. But they will spend hours in a blueberry patch or says on a mountain side eating morhs....theres a great video on the UA-cam of a Grizzly chasing down a caribou for miles before finally killing it..

She went into den pregnant with her body obviously determining she was healthy enough. Read the video discription, it will tell you everything. She ended up giving birth to two cubs.
@@TheBearGuyCanada In the video description you say the cubs were dispersed with the help of a male. I'm not that familiar with bear behavior and lingo. I take "dispersed" as meNonh they were run off by the male. Is that right? They weren't killed or eaten? I know that happens at times when males want to mate with a female.

More like 400 and change. Structuarlly she'll nver hit 500, but she is massive for a female inland grizz that doesn't get salmon.

LOL, nope......she is completely crosswind to the carcass that she smells, but also is trying to figure out what bear is on it. She won't be running in on it if it's detremental to her well being. But she knew me, my truck very well.....but she also knew this back area was hers and I wouldn't be engaging with any aversion.

Many countries of the world have animosity within their regions, Spain with its Basques, Italy with Sicily, Germany with Bavaria, Britain with Scotland, the UK with Northern Ireland, even the USA Southern States have a separatist attitude that goes back to the US Civil War. I could go on here. Identifying the location of this video as "Alberta" would be like identifying the Bears in the Russian Far East as Kamchatka or Siberia or Sakhalin Island. Ultimately it is Russia, or at least Eastern Russia, and until British Columbia and Alberta settles their confederation differences with Ottawa and Ontario / Quebec (if they ever do) it is still Canada, or more accurately, Western Canada, with west spelled with a capital W to indicate its "uniqueness" in Canada, for sure as heck Ontario and Quebec tout their "uniqueness" and "special status" within Canada.

What’s up with the neck collar and ear tag ? Humans can’t leave anything wild well enough alone what a shame would have like to have seen her totally left alone to hunt in the wild
They are tagged & collared to monitor where they are.Sometimes predation occurs on livestock or people & these collars can identify which bear is responsible.Also since bears have a wide range it also t r acts if it still alive,injured or dead

They got pushed back to the northern Rockies, Yellowstone and Glacier National park. Can’t exactly have creatures like this living near big population centers when we’re supposed to be the apex predators
