- IB and Andy are invited to fish the chalkstream river Itchen by Simon Cooper from Fishing Breaks ! IB is a chalk stream beginner, Andy hasn't fly fished a chalk stream in years so they'll need plenty of help fishing the gin clear water in southern England. Tackling up with dry fly rigs, they tackle the rivers of Hampshire hoping for brown trout and grayling. I was coming to the end of your videos, or at least the videos that UA-cam will show me. Glad to see this out this morning!! I love your chalk streams, we have what we call Spring Creeks over in the west, that offer similar water, always a challenge and every fish is well earned.
I always wish I could sit and have an ale with you two, close my eyes and enjoy the banter.
You two are so good together, IB is so humble and Andi is like a willow tree, bending constantly! 🤣😂
But to have a partner in life who will come along and sometimes hand you a kick in the Butt? Can there be anything better? So many men (in particular) marry or partner with a lady who doesn't share their passion and though she may be beautiful and a kind soul, she will come to look upon that passion as his Mistress and she cannot compete with her.
You both are fortunate in this, it is true that opposites attract but there must be things in common that is the glue and you both seemed to have found it.

You know what they say about 'mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun', lunch time in this type of weather is a time for food, a drink (couple of chilled Pimms, cider or two, g & t for IB of course) followed by a snooze in a shady glade, recharge the batteries and then back out again later; the evening rise being the best time of all for me, but some lovely fish caught.

I decided to watch a few fishing videos by different people in the UK today just to see what you have over there. I was starting to think all you had over there were minnows and carp. These dace and roaches I've seen on other videos are minnows by American standards. We'd use them for bait here but you definitely have some massive trout over there. I've rarely seen trout that big here in the U.S. Trout are my favorite fish. Good video.

We have some great rivers up here in Scotland but few are as clear as those chalk streams!!
I actually fished last week up in Glencoe and the water up there is gin clear, great fun to fish and a bit of a challenge!! It was ridiculously hot too 🥵
I was on Tenkara (absolutely love it!!) and managed to land a half dozen small trout and 20 odd salmon parr so worth gettin barbecued, I was beetroot red when I finished!! 😂

The Rod Box, wow used to go in there as a nipper bought a fox penknife, my daughter has it now, also caught a huge trout in the leat by the loos next to king alfreds statue on a crust, weighed it at the shop 3lb7oz...amp the memories, lots of less than legit fishing from the meadows to out back of Whinnal estate grayling and fine trout on the fly only to help our case if caught lol...cheer

Hi. It seems you had a good day…what is evident to me is that none of these fish identify with the genuine inhabitants of the Itchen, their markings are that of stock fish which l feel is a shame , but the way of the world today. Great filming

IB and Andy do ever keep fish to eat? I am a firm believer in only taking what you need/can eat and return the rest.
IB has never killed a fish and I don't think I have in over ten years, if you throw them back they get bigger for the next time you catch them!

Andy, is the nymph with indicator line a floating or sinking line?
11:05 this HOOK SET… I keep losing a big rainbow. I feel him on and set the dry fly and a half count and pull the hook out. I’ve tried waiting… set it soft… direction….. tried to set it hard and broke my fly off….he’s only a couple pounds but he’s a dark hook beak looking fellow. Always in the same spot eating bugs in the wind on a lake. It’s about the end of my cast limit where he eats. But I’ve had hims close to shore twice take. I’ve set the hook on him at least 6 times. 😂😂😂

I hope you put the brown trout back and not killed it. I always put them and I only fish barbles hooks.
What makes you think we might not have put them back?
Nice-looking fish, but stockies, of course, not wild. In their 19th/early 20th century heyday, the great chalkstreams of southern England certainly produced many big fish, but even in those days ones this size were few and far between...and far harder to catch! Though the fly life was more abundant then, big wild brownies were never found in such concentration as we see here - they are naturally territorial, and big ones chase away smaller ones and dominate "their" patch of the river; they were also (and still are) very easily spooked - the anglers here make no attempt to put themselves behind cover, and some of the clumsier (sorry!) casting would have put wild fish down instantly (except during mayfly, perhaps); and when hooked, wild fish would have been much stronger and harder to land.
But though the rivers still look pretty, the ecology of the Test and Itchen valleys these days is much impoverished, particularly in invertebrate life, and fewer big trout can be supported naturally. But instead of that leading to less fishing pressure, we now have far *more* people who wish to fish in these classic waters - and are prepared to pay a great deal to do so. This inevitably leads to the need for heavy stocking - the well-heeled clientele expect to succeed, even if their skills are limited, and businesses like Fishing Breaks are happy to oblige. I'm not complaining about this - the world has moved on, and wishing it was 100 years ago (and I was well connected enough to have river access!) is pointless. Personally I prefer to travel a bit further (I'm based in the south) and seek out wild fish in less degraded rivers in parts of the country that are under less pressure from the march of urban man - Wales is a favourite, and the Usk has surprisingly big fish as well as abundant bird life (fishing is about so much more than catching fish)...but I even prefer having fun in much smaller rivers where the wild brownies come three to the pound (a three-quarter pounder is a good one). Not that I actually turn down invitations to fish the southern chalkstreams, but that's doesn't happen very often!

So it will depend what type of Fishing you will want to do?
You need a valid Rod Fishing Licence to fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt or eel in England (except the River Tweed), Wales, and the Border Esk (and its tributaries in Scotland). Children under 13 do not need a licence.
@@IBandAndyFishing well dry fly looks like a good place to start and im very close to the river test. So I guess I should get on the gov site and start looking.
You can either buy Trout & Coarse licence for a year £30(for two rods) and £45 (for 3 rods) , or salmon & sea trout for a year £82

I’d much rather winkle out a 1/2 lb wild brownie from a small stream but I have to admit sight fishing a river like that, overstocked as it is, looks fun. Only financially viable to fish the Hampshire chalk streams in grayling season though.
