This bad boy often wins out over bottles twice the price. It's great!
I agree with that. Such a good bottle.
Love the videos all of them especially Sip or Skip. I live locally and it is nice to have someone close in the bourbon community. Appreciate the JD video, I have not had a chance to try them yet. Was looking at JD single barrel to start. Thanks so very much.
Awesome. What part of the valley are you in? I'm North Phoenix.
Great review, Peter. Dark, rich, and sweet is exactly my experience with the JDSBBP, as well. I bought this early in my whiskey journey, based on all of the great reviews. I was hesitant to open it, because of the proof. I was still intimidated by proof in the high 120’s, but wow, such an enjoyable experience. If newer folks are worried about the proof, I’d encourage them to try it. It is hot but drinks very well. Cheers!
I agree. This is a very enjoyable experience and it's also a fantastic price. Cheers!
Nice review. No nonsense, well done. As to Tennessee claiming it's whiskey, not bourbon, well...we all know that's BS, but God bless them, the Constitution allows them to call it whatever they want. I really like Jack Daniels. I'm a huge fan of the No. 7. I just wish they would raise the proof to 85 (or really 90).
That would be interesting if they released a high proof No. 7. I wonder if they have ever done something like that. I wonder if their Single Barrel Barrel proof is the No. 7 just at high proof.
@@whiskeyisajourney I read or heard that originally it started out at 90 proof, then 85, and now 80. I guess as demand exceeded supply they decided to "water" it down. I still like it. It gets a lot of derision due to its popularity, but as someone once said "If it's good enough for Frank Sinatra it's good enough for me."
Great review, I get very similar notes along the lines of banana walnut muffins.
On the topic of Tennessee whiskey being in your Bourbon series. If this were a series on top rectangles, you would ofcourse include the square. Same logic here.
I have yet to get a walnut note. But that's a popular note people get in some whiskey. Maybe I need to eat more walnuts to familiarize myself with that taste.
@AFreeLanceGamer Chris Fletcher (the master distiller at JD) is on record saying that Jack Daniel's is indeed a bourbon. If I remember correctly it was during an interview on Mash and Drum's channel.
Love these bottles. Got 2 and will continue buying. Both pretty different from each other
They are so good! I'm going to look for a store pick next. Hopefully it'll be even better if that's possible. Cheers!
JD SBBP is a great bottle. It's one 2:16 of my favorites. Not being a rye fan, I do love rye expression as well.
I'm going to try and get my hands on the rye when they become more available.
Since JD meets all the requirements for bourbon, that's how I think of it..I have not tried the shelf version of the SBBP, however my friend brought me back (from Texas) of a hand selected barrel pick by master distiller Chris Fletcher from 2021 129.3 proof and it is amazing... sadly it only comes in 350 ml bottles and I only got one!
That sounds good. I have not had a barrel pick I haven't liked yet. I made it a point to buy picks this year and it worked out nicely.
I keep it as an option on my shelves, and two more backups. I’m on a whiskey journey myself. Mostly bourbons and,in this case, bourbon-like whiskeys. You got a new sub. I have a lot of really good ones in my inventory. I can definitely give you recommendations if you have any questions.
Sounds great! I am always looking for suggestions.
@@whiskeyisajourney I went through your videos and see you’re mostly a scotch guy, but do bourbons too. I’m a vet(Iraq,Afghanistan) so these two Bourbons kind of check the box for me
One I’ve tried already. Horse Soldier Barrel strength(silver-ish label) at 117.2 proof. It’s got a really cool back story about the Special Forces soldiers being the tip of the spear into Afghanistan and one of the owners being one of those men. There’s a movie about it with Chris Hemsworth. Good juice and a very collectible bottle.
The other one I just picked up to be cracked on this coming Memorial Day is makers mark “batch of honor” deployment 001. bottle 189/246. The barrel stave combo it was finished with was 2-2-2-4-0. 108.9 proof. I’m excited to try it!
Hope you can find those in your area and get a chance to try it and give it a review! Cheers!
I have the Horse Soldier lineup and talked to one of their reps when they were here in Phoenix for a Sig Sauer event at Ben Avery Shooting range. Fascinating story for sure. Thanks for the suggestions. Cheers!
It punches you in the face, in a good way, with tremendous flavor and uniqueness I love. It's my new fav and even a good blender to other weakling bourbons such as Russells 10 year, etc., and makes them feel more substantial, and just better too. Good stuff, and I agree with your 4.5 rating.
Thanks! This is one of my favorite bottles in my collection. Cheers!
J D generally knock it outta the park with these. Always a hit for me. Cheers Peter.
They certainly are fantastic! Thanks Al!
I am new to whisky and tried this guy last night to celebrate new year with my wife and really liked but it hit me like a truck. Too strong to me but again, I am so very new to whisky. However, I loved the banana bread notes and the slight cinnamon aftertaste. Definitely a winner but hard on new palates ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Once you break through the ethanol wall whiskey will open up more than you think it could. It took me about 5-6 months before the ethanol calmed down for me and I was able to get more out of a higher proof bottle. Enjoy your journey. Happy New Year!
@@whiskeyisajourney Thank you for the advice. I really needed it. Today, January 1st I am going to try Wild Turkey 101 Rye for the first time. I should be able to handle that one a bit better. Happy new year my friend!! 🥃🥃
I recently tasted the JD SBBP Rye and it's delicious. I've had 3 bottles of the JD SBBP Bourbon and 2 of them were absolutely amazing with the third one being bunkered. At this point, I'm undecided if the rye is actually slightly better than the bourbon lol!
I have not had the rye yet. Not being a rye fan I can't see it being better than the bourbon. But I'm curious to find out. Cheers!
@@whiskeyisajourney If you enjoy the high proof and flavor profile of the JD SBBP Bourbon, I predict you'll like the rye. A few of my non-rye drinking friends said it's surprisingly good. Of coarse being a single barrel product, some bottles will be better than others.
This is my favorite JD product !!! Even though high proof, drinks well 👍👍👍
I agree. It's a good one
never liked the original JD but did enjoy the Gentleman Jack version, so will definitely give this one a go. cheers
I hope you like it and you find a proof you enjoy. Cheers!
This is just a great review IMO. I have this bottle (plus the brand new - to me - SB BP Rye) and you just nailed it. Just FYI, even though I prefer Rye whiskey I think this bourbon (at least the bottle I have) is better than the Rye.
This bottle and the rye are probably my two best duo bottles I have in my collection. Perfect for cold winters sitting around a fire or just hanging out for the night sipping on something to pass the time with friends.
I picked up both the rye and the "bourbon." Both are terrific, but very hot. Just right over a large ice cube.
I keep looking for the rye. I'm not a big rye fan but a lot of people love the bottle so I'll give it a shot when I see it
One of the best values out there. Great BOURBON for the price. I don't adhere to JD's marketing stunt by calling it a TN whiskey lol
Definitely a great value. I have noticed that it's a little harder to find these days in my area. Hopefully that is a trend that doesn't continue.
Great review. This is an awesome whiskey. I'm not really fond of JD , its ok but jdsbbp is a completely different ball game . Mine is 125 proof. One of my favorites along with wtrb and Of1920 .
Cheers
I agree. JD is doing a good job with the sbbp releases. Cheers!
I really enjoyed the Knob Creek barrel proof video. I have my eye on that one. A Friend just got me the Wild Turkey rare breed and it’s great. If I may ask where did you buy the Knob Creek. 😊
I get most of my stuff at Total Wine and More. I usually do my rounds Monday Wednesday and Friday. I hit the total wine on Camelback, Tatum, and 75th ave. I think they currently have a Knob Creek 9 single barrel at one of the locations, but I'm not sure which one.
Got a 128.8 proof for wife today for xmas. A regular jack daniels. A single barrel and a sb barrel proof. I thought pretty good price @ a wine trader store
Nice. I hope she enjoys it. Cheers!
no 7 I get Peanuts, Gentleman Jack I get Peanut brittle, the 27 year I get peanuts... this one, SBBP, is the only one I get cherry and peanuts....and corn dust... I actually like this one... cheers.
Cheers!
JD BP is always a good one to turn too. I will say I like store picks that veer away from the banana note, more than the standard profile. I refer to it as bourbon or Tennessee whiskey depending on how annoying the person I am talking to is, lol.
That's funny!
Got one last night, 129.3 proof and just a pleasure to sip. 57 bucks in Wisconsin.
I feel this is one of the best bottles of bourbon out there right now. Cheers.
@@whiskeyisajourney is it bourbon?
@@jolkraeremeark6949 yes it's bourbon, but named Tennessee Whiskey because of the Lincoln county process.
Love your video format, haven’t checked yet but have you reviewed the rye yet?
I have a bottle, but have not reviewed it yet. However, it will show up in my allocated whiskies of 2023 video coming out Friday.
I just picked this up for 65 bucks but i haven't tried it yet ! Toledo Ohio 😁
I hope you enjoy it. What's the ABV on your bottle?

Central Phoenix
I’ve killed a few bottles of this. Not readily available in my area, so anytime i go over to FL, i grab a bottle or 2
It is one of my favorite bottles in my collection. It is so good! I need to get my hands on the Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye. Have you had that one?
@@whiskeyisajourney yeah. Got one a few months ago. Sitting at 138.9 proof. It’s really good.
Peter -
Out of curiosity, what rating did you give your George T Stagg?
I did not score it yet, but I'd put it just above a 4.5 probably a 4.6 or 4.7
Thanks Peter@@whiskeyisajourney
I believe bourbon and whiskey are the same. Most are referred to as both.
I don't know why people get all upset when you refer to JD as a bourbon instead of saying it's Tennessee Whiskey, but hey I guess everyone is approaching it their own way.
The proof is just little too much for me. I have a blt and it’s going to sit on my shelf for a long time. My sweet spot for me is 100-115 proof. Cheers
I like that proof point as well 100-115 is nice without blowing out your palate. Cheers!
You left out the most important Master Distiller who was a Black Man named Nathan Nearest Green who taught Jack Daniel how to make Tennessee Whiskey.
Oversight on my part. He deserves a video all to himself in my opinion.
Hey Peter, how much and how often do you drink each week?
It all depends. I typically batch shoot my videos on Saturday. I will probably drink 2 oz of whiskey during the video shoot depending on the type of videos I'm shooting. Then if I have any new bottles to taste I'll head to my sisters house and try the new bottles and have 1/2 oz pour from each bottle so maybe another 2 oz. And that's about it. I don't drink during the week. So on the high end I'd say 8 oz of whiskey a week and that's over a 3 day period Friday - Sunday. Why do you ask and how much were you expecting me to say?
