- An impressive sight of the Reading & Northern T-1 2102 hauling a train of 50 empty hoppers up over the mountain on the Mainline from North Reading to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania on April 26, 2022 as a load test for the upcoming Iron Horse Rambles.
Our day started in North Reading Yard where the train is being prepped by end cab switchers for the 4-8-4 to take North up to Haucks, where they divert from former Reading trackage to the CNJ Nesquehoning Branch. They then run around the wye at Jim Thorpe Junction into the gorge, shoving back across the Lehigh River through Nesquehoning Junction into town. After laying over in Jim Thorpe for couple of hours, they depart heading back up the grade on the Nesquehoning Branch. Once the hoppers reach Middle Yard in Tamaqua, they cut away from the train and take the 2102 north back to Haucks to turn the locomotive around on the wye.

11:11 Gotta Love those period accurate signals! Spectacular shot!
The Rambler returns to the Rails with all new excursions planned this year!!!
In the late 40's, early 50's I lived with my Uncle who was a supervisor on the RDG railroad. On weekends he would take me to the train yards where I could visit the roundhouse and watch the engines, including a few steamers on the round turn table. Great memories!
At 5:11 is Chairman, Owner, and CEO Andy Muller Jr. as he’s putting his hands around his mouth telling to one of his employees. He was today’s engineer and he is really happy to have his locomotive back in action once again.
The way the whistle echos through the valley is so Haunting, and i Love it!
Also that new Paint job on the engine is Stunning! What a magnificent engine, good to see it running again.

Awesome job, love the hooter
the echoes of the whistle through the forest... really enjoyed it.. thank you for this wonderful experience ❤️❤️❤️❤️
2102 pulled out of the yard like it had nothing attached to it. Amazing how well it's running.
She's a beauty!
That is indeed a spectacular site. I sure wish that more and more steamers would run like this (With no diesel attached) hauling a decent sized freight train, that would be a site I'd love to see

Good n' sharp, great photography of a stunning steam locomotive.
Indeed, even though I lived it, it's hard to believe that all really happened.
WOW! Just Wow!
That whistle is awesome the way it echoes in the valley.
Fantastic video.
Awesome capture indeed
All I can say is wow!!! 2102 is a beautiful machine. The haunting whistle is my favorite part. Thank you for sharing!
Perfect !
Looking forward to the trip.
Great catch!
The T1’s hauntingly beautiful whistle echoing off the hills. Just magical.
Beautiful restoration! The sharp edged chuff of a well tuned engine that is pulling hard! Wow! I was lucky enough to ride behind 2012 from Tuckerton to Leesport. Probably mi-1980s, Looks even better now! Amazing job!
Awesome capture.
This is what stew was built to do! I love this because yes
I Really, Really Love Every American Steam Locomotives. :-D
Best video from the day by far!
Thanks man I had to get a buzzed cut from all the cinders in my hair.
Outstanding video! What a great show!
9:42 that whistle echo is haunting…
The sound of that steam whistle amongst the mountains is pure bliss. Thank you to all who worked hard to give her new life.👍
She has a very European sounding whistle. If I close my eyes, I think I hear a German engine through the Harz...
Excellent as always! Great work
Thanks Eric!
What a really great video! Thank you so much!!
Wonderful video !
A fast, picturesque, scenic, atmospheric, and even somewhat haunting 26 minutes. Well done! Thanks!
(I'm seriously considering moving to Pennsylvania!)
Yeah that Reading hooter sure can be spooky depending on what pitch it captures the ear and echoes into the distance.
Awesome work. Good cloudy day for the 2102. What a run by the R&N
Thanks! And R&N really knows how to put on a show. The dedication of the employees, steam crew, and Andy Muller are always present.
We're all US steam locos driven from th right hand side.?
@@nigelmitchell351If not all, then most. Just like our current diesel locomotives are.
a hard working t-hog at it's finest, I keep telling myself that I gotta get out to see this thing
Very nice. I'm going to have to ask you about a couple of those locations.
Yes, definitely, and this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as what I hope to cover during the Rambles.
2102 do be pulling those hoppers like a champ
Very nicely done indeed! My favorite scene: the smoke over the hoppers at 15:40 -- lovely, and good for you for noticing it and capturing it. Second favorite: the smoke over the church in Nesquehoning. And the entry into Tamaqua on the return, also top notch.
Great to see the 484 northern thundering along the main line again
Jaw dropping! Wow 🤩
I Love That Steam Locomotive
That beautiful train horn sound good my favorite car is the caboose's love miss seeing them dpu
STUNNING clips! Truly a beautiful engine. Can't wait until 2100 joins her!
How incredibly beautiful!
9:39 is absolutely haunting, really solidifies my love for the Reading Hooter. I mean yeah her 6 chime is iconic, but that hooter fits surprisingly well. Good stuff!!
Absolutely beautiful engine. Thanks for the show.
It is an enjoyable sight to see a steam locomotive hauling a freight train in 2022, the Reading 4-8-4 2102 looks handsome hauling the coal train and I am glad that it has been restored back to operation.
You could a whole episode about bringing her back to life.
Believe it or not, it started as a 2-8-0.
Maybe they retained the bell from the 2-8-0 and called it a “rebuild” so they would not have to charge a capital account.
Nice vid! 👍👍🎉🎉
Amazing video
Wow súper video my friend like and Greetings from Argentina !
A 4=8=4 haulin freight and a CABOOSE!! WOW !!!!! Brings tears to my eyes.for the old days. Watchin the cars roll by I opened another tab to play Sons of the Pioneers "One More Ride". What I wouldnt give for one more real ride to smell the "Smoke, Cinders and Soot"
such a beautiful locomotive!
Very nice. Was a great day.
Terrific vid mate! Many thanks for this. So so good to see a modern, powerful steam loco hauling freight cars!!
2102 in my opinion is a national treasure !
It's so great to see all these beautiful machines coming back to service after all this time.
ChainsawN&W1218, love those hooter whistles, good to see the 4-8-4 in action again,I hope one day the VMT can restore N&W A Class 2-6-6-4# 1218,love that single note hooter whistle.
Very nice video, LIKE....
What an absolute fantastic locomotive.
Thanks awesome train.
This is such a beautiful steam locomotive. A new train brought back from the past to the modern age. Also, I like to think that this freight run was a nice callback to when she did freight service runs before and after her conversion to a T1 4-8-4 "Northern" back in the day.
Steam Locomotives will Always be Number One

Such a big beautiful Northern
I got to see this in person and it was honestly awesome
Very nice videography! Its nice how you focus on the characters and the little elements! Cheers! -Alex
Some of the old structures, saw better days, needing a crew to patch them up, at least, a make shift, crew rest area, or relay spot for communications, spare parts, monitor security station.. Repurpose the structures, at least a snack bar, coffee bar, pit stop.. Besides, Clam Chowder soup, bisquits, ham/cheese sandwich, might hit the spot on runs. Cold New England winters.. I was mistaken, I miscounted thinking it was a 4-10-4 Steam locomotive.. It's a 4-8-4! Yet beautiful work. :) (Brick mason, roofers, and insulated windows might get that structure sound.) :)
Cool view of how much velocity the exhaust has as it exits the stack at 12:10.
Excellent videography and editing, A++. I especially enjoyed the Jim Thorpe curve scenes.
This Video is So Dramatic I Love IT!!!!
This seems unreal. Never have I seen a steam locomotive in action. Paint job is A1. Very impressive video, sir.
Long Live Every American Steam Locomotives
I love you 2102💛💛🖤🖤
I don’t know why but the 2 guys popping their heads out the window simultaneously at 6:15 had me laughing😂😂😂
At 5:44, it was SO DAMN GOOD to see A REAL CABOOSE, AND NOT THAT WORTHLESS FLASHING RED LIGHT!!
It reminded me of the red cabooses that were on the end of the Southern Railroad freight trains.❤❤❤😊😊😊
I miss them.
23:30 did anybody notice the wheelslip when it was over the crossing?
Also a bit of slip approaching the bridge at about 14:55.
when ya got it , ya got it, and she still got it!!!!! :)
Even though I’m not the biggest fan of steam this video is fantastic from a railroad history buff’s perspective. Some of the more remote shots almost seem like you brought a 4K camera back 75 years in the past and shot routine freight movements. Excellent work!
Why aren't you a fan of steam?
Best UA-cam Video In The Universe
This was a beautiful video. My Grandad lived in a railroad town in the PA mountains. Steam was gone by the time my memory began, but i always wondered what it would have looked and sounded like. I wish I would have known this was happening. Loved to hear that whistle in the hollow
This almost feels unreal
Fantastic video wow
A truly amazing video. Haunting.
That's the best sounding steam whistle, I've ever heard. Such a haunting and lonesome sound.
Nice seeing a whole train without any graffiti…!!!
5 and a Half Rating Stars for Very Very Excellent
Wonderful video!! I love 4-8-4 "Northerns". My dad used to ride 6100, 6200, and 6400 series Northerns on the CNR.
Awesome work!
11:55 you can see each wheel accommodate the irregularities of the rails.
Awesome Video.
very nice video
There's just something about those movie-style cameras that make things look SO cinematic.
Awesome . . .
Certified Fresh Vanilla Cakes For Very Very Awesome
The BEST. R/R Channel yet. Glad im watching instead of a movie. May DUMP those other channels( some).
Beautiful locomotive
Beauty
Excellent.
I saw this coal burner in a video, and now i can't stop watching it. Steam trains are fascinating in a way modern diesels will never be.
Bet the old gal wasn’t even breaking a sweat!!
That's one thick steam locomotive
Das hört sich ganz toll an,da hört man was noch in ihr steckt
Beautiful vifdeo.
it wasn't until the shot at 20:20 that I realized how massive the firebox is on this locomotive
At 23:33 , she started slippin' and a slidin' a bit... then it got real slippery within a couple of seconds after that grade crossing.
