- Classical tenor - some say the forgotten race, others say the race never remembered in the first place. Either way, here I dip my toes into the mysterious scarce world of classical tenor. Now the gears are turning...
Thank you David Song for the lesson!!! Yes sir!

LMAO the "Have you tried the flavored reeds?" killed me😂😂
Yooo foolish i love your videos
no way it's Frank
Always a good thing to learn more styles and you got a handle on it quick! Great job Nathan, but also GREAT job to David!
Nathan studied classical music for a while, just predominantly, if not exclusively, alto
You gotta love the tenor sax. A lot of songs I’ve gotten in band are kind of basic bass line and all that, but every once in a while, you get the song every tenor saxophonist dreams of… one where you get some baseline, counter-melody, AND melody in. It really is one of the best feelings I’ve experienced.
Join the jazz band tenor is much more appreciated
This video is perfect timing. I JUST found out that I’ll be playing tenor for the first time with the wind ensemble. Never done more than just noodled on it and now I have to play it for a whole semester.
Classical tenor is so underrated. I play a Holton 241 with TL5 mouthpiece and V12 reeds.
wow i'm early, i honestly can't tell if I've been wanting to learn classical tenor sax or just stick with jazz
both are really interesting. i personally have been focusing on jazz for alto and concert/classical for bari.
do both bruh
Much more classical rep on alto honestly.
Do what you think you would enjoy doing more in the long run
The fact that the guy didn't recognize "somewhere over the rainbow" is still haunting me
I Play classical tenor too it is so much fun
Fun hang! It still blows me away that Ken Beeson made this horn and such a trip to see it with the key clamps. I bought my first set of clamps from him in about 1983 - ouch, all of a sudden I feel really old….
hey nathan i really love your channel! i’m a trumpet player and i really appreciate you and you’ve truly inspired, and interested me in sax. also your all-state audition tips really helped. i made it in so thank you.
I am honored!
We’re in the same boat @antoniourias595 I just got my own tenor (was renting) and I’m enjoying the experience so much, it’s an interesting switch from playing trumpet, trombone, and tuba🤣
Just two boys enjoying each other's saxophones
Excellent episode of Saologic! I loved the way a jazz tenor differs from the Yamaha Classically styled tenor. David had great hints on keeping the air warm and fast for those low notes. You can tell the difference right away when you applied that to your horn. After about five years away from my alto, it took me a good 3-4 months before my centered focused tone came back, but you started getting it by the end of the episode! Great channel, great content and really informative on how you can make any sax sound Classical or Jazzer!
i dont see why people dont do jazz and classical, both are absolutely fire
Our entire jazz band does both LOL
Even many of the famous rockers over the time have been classically trained. IIRC Elton John was Royal Academy of Music as just one rather well known example. Hopefully I remembered that correctly.
Work to reward ratio for each is different. You have to play a LOT of saxophone to be decent at both. Playing lots of jazz does start to affect your playing habits in the classical world
Jazz is better
yo just started high school, does concert and jazz band count?
You really like that "rubber" wow
Saxologic: *breathes*
Me, who’s been playing tenor almost a year: oMmMgGggGg HoW iS hE sO gOoOooOd??!?
yay upload
I am the one who created that meme about Batman and Robin. I think I need a new mouthpiece,SLAP!! Longtones!!!! I made that for sax on the web in 2007....
glad to see David again I really liked him
Botw poster. Cultured.
I kept waiting for Villa Lobos and Bolero but then the video ended.... Please make another one playing classical tenor standards :)
dude I was going to the bathroom when I opened this video, I knocked on the door and Saxologic said “hello?”
"I'm going to learn to play classical tenor!" Half the lesson: "These are my preferences."
Have you ever tried playing on a 10’s-60’s Buescher saxophone? They’re such a unique sounding saxophone and I play on the Aristocrat. Would highly recommend.
They're incredible instruments
Never played anything like them before.
Got one myself. A big B from 1942 I love it. Moved to a 6 for a more reliable axe, but truth be told the tone of the buescher remains unconquered!
I love my bueschers! Especially from really late 20’s to 50, it’s something totally unique of themselves and I love them. I personally have a 1932 new aristocrat alto, 1936 aristocrat bari, and 1948 aristocrat tenor
I have a Buescher tenor, and I absolutely love it! Best saxophone I've ever played!
When are we ganna see some bari?!?!
Everytime Saxologic uploads I share it with 400 people
S W I N G I N G
I'm saving up for a cannonball T5-B big bell and a selmer concept, are cannonballs good?
I’m surprised how much of a difference the horn made in his tone, I always had the misconception it was literally all embouchre and mouthpiece (I know it’s mostly that but whatever)
Are we going to ignore that his dog's name is
MINGUS?
AS IN CHARLES MINGUS
In "MINGUS moanin", possibly the best Bari sax song ever?
Just today I got my tenor sax, I’ve been playing alto for 5 years but it seems like way more. Tenor is so fun and would recommend to anyone on the fence. This video really helped me to say the least.
A couple of years later: How was the transition from alto to tenor?
you discovered the real use of high F# key on the tenor : play the altissimo G easily... but all the cats use tenor w/o a high F#, that's why few people talk about this fingering
They took their website down after you made that flavored reeds video😂
I have that tenor
9:12 - best playing of the whole video😂
it's the swinging guy!!!
Hey I’m early! Happy to see you post. I want a tenor so bad lol I should just stop watching vids with them because I am a teen that can’t afford one(I’m starting an Etsy shop so hopefully that helps)
I love this guy so much I’ve met him in person and he’s just so chill and kind.
yes seeEEeer~
Niiiice ❤️.
NASA's Webb telescope will help unlock secrets of black holes...
I feel like more and more people have been using the breathtaking neckstrap
Shut up Micha
What brand is it?
swinging makes me lmao literally every time my guy really captured lightning in a bottle
i like your chill vlogs nathan. I'm tired of fast-paced videos. anyway, do you need to have big lungs to play sax?
Might be wise to place mouthpiece on and off the neck with the neck off of the sax, or carefully hold the neck so as not to apply up or downward force to the neck. Its easy to damage the neck and or socket, known as neck pull-down. My used YTS62 had it when I bought it, and I had to replace the neck socket and refit the neck. Would be expensive if you had to pay for it to be done. if you gently apply force to the neck with it tightened, if it moves vertically you have an issue already. Over-tightening the neck clamp screw to compensate, can lead to it breaking, leaving the thread in the socket. Gotta cherish those lovely saxes. love the videos :-)
Yes sir
Nobody could've watched the whole video at this point
Do you even Brecker, bro?
Golden butter chocolate is the best description I’ve ever heard
Back at it again with another classical saxophone arc, the saxologic adventure lore is expanding.
Dude sounds incredible and calls himself mid. Life of a musician 😂😂😂
good to finally david after leaving what he sounded like as a mystery for over a year (thanks nathan)
Love the content hope to be as good as you one day
Yea, that’s Stusek alright 😂
He proctored my jury one semester. I put down that I practiced ~10hrs/week on average. He looks at me and says, “you’ll never be successful if that’s all you practice!” He was also very relieved when I no longer needed him to adjudicate my comp exam, as he had a rather busy schedule and simply didn’t want to spend the extra time doing anything else
Dude’s hilarious lmao
What is that tuner app you using?
Edit: B + high F# is a VERY easy altissimo G (if you have the key), but without it: high F + G# and side Bb is just as easy I'd say. The side Bb raises the pitch, and the G# makes it pop out easier. Have a King Super 20 bari and the altissimo G "B + side Bb" is way easier than the high F fingering (which is basically impossible on it). So I like how he clearly doesn't listen to anything besides classical. ::Plays Somewhere Over the Rainbow:: "What was that?" lmao
Where can I listen and read more about classical tenor sax? (Thank you as always Nathan)
Bruh I played tenor last year and the low register literally made me cry. The instrument was bad amplified the problem.
From what I understand, the original Adolphe Sax horns had a narrower bore, and that made them more suitable for classical playing. At least the recordings I've heard on UA-cam suggest that: Trying for an even, super-controlled classical tone on a modern sax sounds to me like trying to drive a 1,000 hp. hot rod on the highway - it's always trying to get away from you, and I can hear the effort. Whereas an Adolphe Sax horn sounds a bit like an Cor Anglais or a bassoon, that kind of playing seems to come naturally to it, and (to continue the analogy), it's like a jeep on dirt roads, or a taxicab on city streets or a sports car on mountain highways - suited to the terrain.
Classical tenor is the most underrated saxophone setting. Get listening to James Houlik. Favorite pieces: The Upward Stream - Peck, Pitt County Excursions - Duckworth, Concerto for Tenor - Ewazen, Fantasia - Villa Lobos.
you should wear a lavalier mic/something similar, you're a little quiet
What is app use you for the calibrage ???
This makes me really think all tenor players act the same 😭
Amazing editing! So funny!!!! And we learned a few fingering tips. What!!!!!!!!!
Thank you sir Gus! Glad you enjoyed it
8:48 of course he does he plays classical
So true haha
have a yamaha ex myself, literally changed saxophone world for me jazz as well making my sound WAY richer and warm.
not gonna lie i just got invited into jazz band in my school and I'm learning tenor so wish both of us luck
Can you please bring him back to make a classical tenor video.
Nice technique. My advice is to focus now on saxophone sound, maybe change mouth peace or something.
"Have you tried the flavored reeds? After I made that video, they took the website down...👀"
I love your dogs name Mingus!!!!!!! He's so cute
5:18 bro is bussing
Clarinet
How is this classical tenor? Where is the vibrato? Classical saxophone uses vibrato!
I really like the thumbnail because that’s how it sometimes feels when I play low notes 😂😂
I know you don't do tutorials often but how do you get low notes out? Mine always jump up an octave
I knew Ken Beason from my days at NTSU ,1982-1986
do those tuning things carry across saxes?
Ratio
I really enjoy the total chill nature of these videos
does anyone know what neck strap david’s using?
Swinging guy?
I key clamp my Alto, but not my tenor anymore. I'm a Yanagisawa girl myself! But I don't do classical!
I cannot understand why Yamaha does not have any sax with good looks on their collection, they would be selling like donuts... That classic golden shine hurts eyesight...
Repair men and players speak wonders, they could easily make a jazz line to compete with Eastman, P. Mauriat, Trevor James and Cannonball priced at around 3.500€...
Meaning no offense, but classical saxophone sounds like an oxymoron, considering that there's no saxophone in a traditional orchestra. So what does someone majoring in classical saxophone hope to do after graduating (other than obviously teaching)?
Would have been nice to hear David play a piece! You guys are inspirational for an old fart like me who has just started.
Saxologic
3:22 did he just... touch the top of the reed?!
I get it now
My middle school band has 1 tenor who always looks like he is trying to swallow his mouthpiece when playing notes
Looks fun. I have all Yamaha saxes, soprano through baritone....all 62s, except the soprano is an 82Z.
Why man why! You’ve made the great sax God Brecker and the holy son Chad very angry with this! #noclassicalsax
Why does he look short but isnt too short
I have the same reeds for my alto saxophone!
Classical tenor? I could never lol
Cool!
I play tenorrrrrrrrrrrrrr sax
The hello had me dead omg😂😭
Hey? How is your throat pain? Please don't push yourself too hard.
when i was very young my next door neighbor had a dog named mingus. she said he was named after a baseball player, lol
i guess i just wasted 15 minutes. i thought he will be playing it but he just likes talking i guess
Mans didn’t need to flex his watch that hard. SHEEESH prrrp prraaappapapa
