The classical "snob" was a perfect performance. I've known many throughout the years, they will hit "wrong" notes when soloing and not know it.They lack the harmonic ear, yet they have massive technique. They will play swing 8ths , like dotted 8th, 16th.

Lol, it's really bad freshman year. Most of the wannabees or tryhards usually either mature or drop-out by senior year. I had someone made my fun of my guitar skills since I was in a beginner's guitar class. Little did he know I was actually a piano performance major. Let's just say he changed his tune once he heard me in my element at department recitals.

I once played a concert with an amateur band. so i play washboard there and some school friends, we have like a washtubbass and banjo and all that stuff. the other band were some klezmer band. the clarinet player was kinda rude. little did he know i studied jazz sax (im not the best tho, but im not an amateur), so in one song i whip out the horn and play a bit of solo. after that he was my "friend". yikes!

I'd say lot's of Rap and R&B artists have been including "jazz chords" in their songs for awhile now. Jazz in itself isn't super popular but popular music today is definitely adapting jazzier sounds into it!

This was actually my first time playing classical tenor ever lol! I didn’t even get to play it in undergrad. Ryan handed me his old C star and a strength 2.5 reed and it was a bit of a struggle 😂

Well played gentlemen! I too experienced this phenomena during my college days as a saxophonist. I came into college as a hot shot jazzer, but ALL MUSIC MAJORS were obligated to take the APPLIED STUDIES for their instrument, which was/is always classical in nature. I must say that my applied saxophone professor, Dr. Thomas Liley, who was no jazzer and he knew it, helped me become a far better player. The embouchure, tone, technique, etc., that he taught made me a much more complete player. I am a jazzer through and through, but thanks to Dr. Liley, I have an appreciation and even an ear for great classical saxophone. Side note: Dr. Liley's saxophone professor during his college days was none other than Dr. Eugene Rousseau.
He got the (close eyes->inhale->establish embouchure->produce gorgeous tone->relax in self-satisfaction) process 100% right. Uncanny.

This dark sound is really nice! Why don't jazz players use it? Seriously, the video is funny, but this dark sound is just so great!
They do when it's stylistically needed. You wouldn't want that sound playing funk but it could be used in swing ballads, especially from the 30s and 40s.
Don't forget about the core. It's all about the core.
Jazz players can if they want to add it to their artillery , depending on the mood or personality. Remember jazz is part of the "popular music" , so Funk. Blues, Rock, R&B , Reggae, Latin are related doesn't matter the differences. If saxophonists get stuck to sounding the same from top to bottom of the horn, not personal effects or even "Noises" the saxophone would have never become the most recorded wind instrument in popular music. For an instance Imagine any Stevie Wonder or Sting tune remove the sax players and add a couple of guys blinking their eyes and dancing like a fairy , while playing in a clarinet angle , using a constant vibrato (not even other classical instruments use) . Good luck to any possible hit.
On the other hand everything is about context , classical sound is supposed to blend with violins, cellos, bassoons. "Popular Music sound" is supposed to be able to blend and cut over Electric guitars, Trumpets, Keyboards, Drums or speak the same language as a Jazz quartet or Big Band. The sound needs to be as unique and personal as possible . That's what makes you listen to different versions of a song by different sax players. What's the point if they all do the same? I don't mean classical players sound exactly the same and opposite to what some people believe the soloists have freedom to express themselves and even simply our natural physical differences won't allowed 2 guys sounding the same. But the differences are a lot more pronounced when you have a different goal and don't have to play in forced style someone imagined the creator of the instrument wanted to sound like just because...Listen to Michael Brecker, Stan Getz, Seamus Blake, James Carter, Joe Henderson. Their sound is as personal as their voice. I was a classically trained oboist and I switch to sax when I was 15 just because of Jazz. Michael BRECKER to be exact.
Don't forget about perfect posture and beautifully modulated vibrato, no growling please.
Attire should be a suit or a dress, never casual wear, it's just not proper.
Large mpc tip openings are anathema, shush Satan, be gone.
And never forget, whether you are a Classical saxophonist or a Jazz randomnoter, always, I mean always let your ego get in the way lest you might learn some modesty and give up on some of your misconceptions.

@@ethan.tangee Yeah it's some weird magic like when I'm playing the Bari for concert season it's like I lose my hands at some eight note rythems but when I'm playing the tenor getting ready to swap for marching season (band directors don't want me playing the school owned Bari during marching season due to the age and state of the instrument) eighth notes are just like bedo bado badop deda. I guess if there is anything science based for the it would literally be with the specific Bari the school makes me use as I don't own one my self being a freshman. I mean have you seen the prices. Many classical musicians have always felt superior to other musicians, however classical players secretly marvel at, and wonder about, how jazz musicians practice, play, and improvise? What many don't know is the fact that most jazz musicians started out learning and playing classical music in their early training. The reason they left classical music and turned to learning jazz was the fact that jazz allows them total freedom in their playing, and in their spontaneous composing, in addition to a harmonic and tonal world rarely heard in the classical repertoire.

to be honest, with a lot of confidence and mastery of 8, tripelet tripelet and 16 notes bloks spam, jazz is a loooooooot of fun to play for me, then playing chords happens and it gets tough and all nerdy for me jajajaja, on the other hand although im not all that much into classical (and i think is pretty tough as well), I really appreciate the great arrangments using differents instruments on the big classical compositions, also, about the sax, I like the sweet delicate tone as well, its quite insteresting, and actually, i had not heard it before until I find this channel and heard it on previous videos, very cool

@@DereBear A bunch of licks that he's playing are very brecker/coltrane signature lick. Another "Breckerisms" are these run from the bottom to the top of the tenor sax register. And the jazz licks they were playing are all tipical Brecker pattern (except the swing one). Brecker, Steve Grossmann are very present in Ryan's playing. If you listen to some recording of these two great cats you will notice. Hope this will help you. Sorry for my english.

Other lick that he's playing are very common on Brecker solo on Oleo in 1983 and also Brecker solo on Impression with McCoy Tyner on a great album

Over the years while studying, performing and even teaching I have realized that 98 % of classical sax players were just kids someone put the instrument in their hands and never even bother listening to anything else. Then they develop the fixed idea they were taught and the level of frustration kills them in the "wild" , since that's not how things work out there. Classical music is quite strict and most of their ego comes from frustration/lack of recognition. Only those into actual composing/creating are more down to earth. On the other hand 98% of jazz players were the kids that actually chose the instrument because they listened to someone who inspired them. It's easy to understand the difference in musicianship between (again 98% ) jazz and classical saxophonists. Sit them both at a piano and make them harmonize any song . It's sad but when a classical saxophonist says jazz players play random notes , it doesn't only show they have no idea what is going on. It also shows they have no idea how chords and harmony in general work. Improvisation is nothing less than horizontal harmony. Obviously since you are not limited to the reach of you hands like playing chords on a piano, you can have even more freedom. It 's not a jazz invention. Great masters Like Mozart used to improvise. Of course since then most classical player have become very trained - monkey like and on top of that the harmony has extended. Bossa Nova would have sound satanic back in those times.
I was a classically trained oboe player because I liked the sound of the instrument from the cartoons. I picked up the saxophone and made it my main instrument at the age of 15 because I of popular music specifically "Michel Brecker". You want to be a fully dedicated classical musician?! Just don't be lazy and pick up an instrument with plenty of classical repertoir . Sax can be played also, and many revolutionary great composer did it, but It already kicked the butt of every single wind instrument in 'Popular Music' world. Trumpet being the closest. That level of perfection for everything doesn't exist even in the human voice. A great lyrical, R&B, Rock, heavy metal , black metal voice won't necessarily be good for something else. That's why you have to use different singers. Instruments are no different.
Don't complain the saxophone is not included in "most " chamber music settings. when was the last time a basson, oboe, clarinet, cello, a classical percussionist, english horn or even french horn were called for a Rock, Funk, Pop, R&B, Salsa, Bossa Nova , Reggae, blues, gig?? They can be used in jazz though, since it's a flexible language. It's just the lack of flexibility of the musician what gives them the inability to do so.
In the end for me getting into the saxophone and getting stuck only in the classical world is like playing electric guitar and hating Rock. You are playing the wrong instrument.
Honestly classical players have become so square over the years that even if you could bring Mozart back to life and make him perform for an auditory without knowing his name. I am 100% sure he would be slammed by the vast majority for not playing 'properly' like Mozart.
@Harold Frank I definitely have to agree with you all around. Regarding the Mozart coming back to life bit that made me laugh because I have to deal with people like that all the time. I am an oboist as you were and and a private instructor but I love the saxophone as well. If I was born again and I picked up the saxophone it would be definitely jazz. Unfortunately I am too old already and my personality has more to do with the oboe and concert music.
@@joshuawekl8994 :) :) Great music is great music. I do consume classical music, just not classical saxophone. By the way even though I don't play the oboe anymore I still love it. For me the oboe is like the saxophone of the classical world . It can be played fast, slow, more aggressive, rounder it doesnt matter. It's recognizable for it's engaging and certainly sexy tone simply playing a couple of notes.

I love playing with classical musicians. You just have to sell "the piece" to them. They are the perfect tools altough it can be weird writing down funk or afrobeat licks that were never meant to be written down XD.
