The part about the complexity and "meta" of modern minecraft really resonates with me. I remember playing 1.16 or 1.17 with my friend and at one point he said "ok let's mine netherrite, I'll craft some beds" and I was just confused. I'm really out of touch with all of these new mechanics like villager trading posts and it really doesn't feel rewarding to learn them just to play a block game.
I currently play on 1.5.2 with my brother since it was the version of our childhoods. Yes, some things are annoying, like placing buttons or trapdoors, but the whole experience is just simpler and more welcoming, which is the exact thing that I loved about minecraft.

The biggest problem I have with removing fireflies because they kill frogs - They then made the frogs eat LITTERAL MOLTEN ROCK CUBES!

I can understand that, because those are fictional things, specially that light block. And I don't think a kid would have an easy way to get magma.

The bloating of the game was so onpoint. Too many mobs and too many one-time specific items that will be forgotten or never even used. What also annoys me is structure generation. Structures used to be very very rare to come across in earlier versions, it made you feel alone and on your own. But now you find a village or any other structure from just exploring for a few minutes which removes the rewarding feeling of finding one like it did back then.

    • @varuhash50

For someone like me the structures can help create lore for a world, make it feel more special. Im happy more things are getting added, because its showing Minecrafts world isnt dead and youre alone, its progressing towards the player finding more life to make the world feel more alive, at least at some point before the player spawned in. It probably gets the “youre the last of your kind” done well, but alone you are not

I really think a big part of why people dont enjoy modern minecraft is the modern meta. I agree, the trendy way to play this game is all about automating everything and making everything as big and as fancy as possible. I find fun in playing this game like I used to back in the day, in my current survival world in the latest version I've really just been doing what I want to do, when I want to do it. I spent a whole evening designing a bathroom in my castle, completely pointless but thats the whole fun of the game to me I guess, just building and doing what I want in my own way.

your mention of bloat in the game is definitely one my biggest problems with it too, there is SO many items, mobs, features, etc in this game that have like 1 purpose (IF ANY, BTW) and most of the time that purpose is for something that has…no purpose, like something i saw someone mention recently is how we should get a cooking update, and they said this specific thing “we already have all the ingredients” and this, THIS was a prime example of the games bloat, like what fucking purpose do sweet berries and cocoa beans serve, why tf can we only make cookies with cocoa beans, this is just one example of the many situations this occurs in minecraft and i just wish everything served a meaningful purpose rather than just existing for no reason

I do mostly agree (although coca beans are the exception because they can make brown dye.)
One thing to point out how it's different from terraria, which has 3.3 times more items than minecraft, is that terraria has groups of items, and if it's not in a group, then its used for a lot of things.
you have tools of each metal,
      furniture for each building block,
      specific loot for each boss.
it's all very organized and you can find a use for everything.
want this item that increases the amount of summons you have? guess what, you can upgrade it not once, but twice.
what about that sword forged from hell? you can upgrade that into a really cool weapon, which can be upgraded again, and then again into the best weapon in the game.
don't even get me started on base materials.
in minecraft, you have these turtle shells that can be used for a potion and a helmet that gives you 5 seconds of water breathing. thats it.
what about the sniffer? it gives you flowers? what do they do? oh nothing.
all these cool new (passive) mobs they added to this game. i wonder what they drop. Absolutley nothing.
what about phantom membranes? Its been more than TEN updates since their introduction, surely they have another use? No? just the potion and elytra repairing that nobody uses because the level cost on anvils is broken and everybody has mending anyway? ok.

In the end, Minecraft is whatever you want it to be, but this video helped me realize that self-imposing yourself with such limitations by playing a beta is in itself the act of shaping the game the way you just like and want it to be. Thanks for your video, your ideas are super well exposed.

  • @ajdude9

I really think Minecraft could use an update similar to what the developer of Mosa Lina did - an update that *removes* a lot of the bloat, with some option to re-add them as an extra feature/datapack.
Just as described, it could remove Glow Ink Sacs and replace their functionality with Glowstone - it could remove Sniffers which don't fit the artstyle and do literally nothing but dig up cosmetic flowers, and add them somewhere else as a rare drop. Cut the ruined portals that stain the landscape, make structures rarer so getting full diamond gear isn't a matter of walking 50 blocks from spawn into a village, cut the armadillos, the camels, the goats, even the pandas and dolphins that serve either 1 purpose or none at all. Even turtles feel ill-fitting to the Minecraft experience, because they scream of using the game as a platform to virtue signal for endangered animals instead of actually serving a purpose in the world (which is why killing them gives you nothing, you need to breed turtles and grow a baby to get scutes).
The model of infinite expansion has been Minecraft's downfall, but not because of the flaws of the model, but because they instead have been throwing purposeless additions onto it instead of adding to Minecraft's core - Mining and Crafting. What use does taking a brush and brushing sand and gravel for some cosmetic pottery sherds have when you could just find a broken pot deep in the world to get the sherds, adding to the experience of Mining and exploring the world?
Minecraft becomes unrecognisable because Mojang keeps throwing temporary additions and saying "LOOK! LOOK! WE ADDED X AND Y! HYPE, RIGHT? WE'RE STILL RELEVANT! BUY OUR PRODUCTS!" instead of making a better sandbox experience; they're not pouring more sand in the box, they're just throwing us different shells to put on our castles.

Idk after playing around with the new rendering engine and seeing the new deferred rendering pipeline in action.... what about all the useless old features?, what do pigs do that's unique?, what are the uses of lapis?, have you ever actually crafted gold tools?, are they bloat?, should Mojang remove those "useless" features?,

Mojang behaves like a socially anxious teenager. They occasionally try to break out of their shell, just to be bullied back into it by their peers (the Minecraft playerbase). They have now created a bunch of unhealthy avoidance tactics and have become complete social pushovers, caving to even moderate backlash and trying to appease the bullies (they cannot patch obvious exploits or do any game balancing for fear of backlash). They try to appear unique and quirky, but this comes across as fake and creates more backlash (mob votes, Minecraft Live, etc.). This has lost them their identity, as in trying to please and appease everyone, they have lost their personality and charm, and are like a tumbleweed being blown where ever the wind goes.

Personally I've felt the concept of "balance" has been part of the issue. Minecraft is, or was, at it's core a sandbox for the player to exist in. The concept of "balance" compared to other games with ANY concept of resource management feels problematic as, the more "balance" mechanics are added the more is taken away from the sandbox concept. The more things we have to do to gain or maintain resources, the less time as a percentage, and the longer it takes to get to, the actual sandbox mechanic, given a survival playthrough. Therefore, the more gets added, even if these new mechanics, items, or blocks are individually easier to obtain than average, the total amount towards feeling like you have a full building pallet to work with goes up, no matter what.

Adding a definitive end-state to minecraft felt like the moment the degradation began. In pre-End minceraft, the only "end" goal was diamond tools and conquering the nether. I remember Notch mentioning that one of the main inspirations for the game was Dwarf Fortress, which is much the same way; the only "end" goal is candy and conquering the circus. Otherwise, both old-school minceraft and DF both only have a "goal" of seeing what you could eventually build for yourself in your own world.
Modern minecraft is different. There's a final boss. There's a million structures to find and conquer. There's villages to grow and protect. Why bother building a cool caste, a illustrious mansion, redstone contraptions, rollercoasters, pixel art? There's nether fortresses and strongholds to find! And you're gonna need a mob farm if you ever want to get the ender pearls for the end gate! Now, much like you reitierate in the video, I'm not going to be a nostalgic boomer who says it was objectively better in pre-release. But alpha, beta, and pre-release minecraft is a different game than release minecraft, and I prefer the relative simplicity of the pre-release versions.

    A few changes:
Goats can be milked and brushed for string (that is literally where cashmere comes form) goat milk gives 3 hearts of regen to make it different from normal milk. it is brushed off goat hair from their winter coats). Remove Turtles and keep armadillos as a way to upgrade leather armor similar to netherite is for diamond, mainly to upgrade dyed armor. Make shipwrecks more rare and with a bit more value to them. put maps to woodland mansions and such in them and boost the odds of gold, emeralds, and diamonds in the captains chest. Have a higher chance than a normal dungeon to have a notched apple in them along with buried treasure chests. Foxes can be tamed but arre annoying like cats and are nocturnal (based on actual tamed foxes. They are more of a pain to take care of). Have them be able to scare off zombies, whitches and illagers at night, but sleep more in the day. Polar bears can drop bass, add in grizzly bears that spawn near rivers and drop salmon and berries, higher chances in taiga biomes. All squids drop calamari but also debuff the player with squid ink, giving a lesser blindness effect and increasing aggro ranges for 2 minutes. ink sacs can make blindness potions, decreasing projectile mob's accuracy and lowering aggro ranges of mobs affected. glow stone also works for signs, glow squid ink can also make the arrows that light up mobs (forgot name) and be used to make potions with the same effect. Sniffer can also be used to find dungeons, mineshafts, trial chambers, strongholds, and ancient cities.

My ideal Minecraft version would be one with the quality of life improvements of relatively recent updates. Say, about the time offhanding an item became a thing. And the block and gameplay variety of just before they added pillagers and phantoms. I started playing a little after they added sprinting and hunger. Basically every update back then was QoL, new toys to play with, and genuinely good additions like being able to place stairs upside down.
Also not being owned by Microsoft or any other big company that will just bloat the game and add macrotransactions.

This is a very good video. I agree that many blocks, mobs, and items are such a bloat, and I've learned to limit myself on what types of blocks I use. For example I'm trying to make a redesign of Minecraft villages and mostly using the block pallet that is used in the villages, and sparingly using "new" blocks to tie everything together.
Less is more and it really shows. I've changed my mind set from "I need some shulkers" to "I can make a house to store my items with chests and barrels" as well as "I need an Elytra" to "I can make a horse pathway/railline".
I really am enjoying putting boundaries on what I do in the game because it sets me up for nice and natural progression rather than grabbing villagers and stuffing them into a shack.

I love the simplicity and peacefulness of going back to beta, but I feel like I'm sacrificing a lot of features I like from modern.
I love the breadth and quality of life improvements of modern, but I feel like I'm putting up with a lot of bullshit bloat to have the good parts.
Probably the only way I could truly enjoy Minecraft again without burning out within 2 weeks is to learn to code and mod my own custom version of the game, but even that is a sacrifice because what fun is a world I can't share with anyone if I wanted to, and have to constantly update just for myself?

And that's why we have only 2 ways to play. Beta or modded the hell out. I personally choose modpacks where people REALLY love what they are doing, have a vision of playstyle and give you the option try it, or something else, if you don't like it. I'm a fun of automated farms, but not in the way it works in Vanilla, cause redstone is really tricky and hard to understand, so most people just watch tutorials and that's all. But mods like Create, for example, give you sooo much room for experimentation, trials and errors, easy and hard stuff to wok with. I spent so much time in Create, so many playthroughs, and every time I build differently, there's no stagnation of idea.

The biggest problem with modern Minecraft is the feature:mechanic ratio. There are far few many THINGS and far too few *things to do* in Minecraft. How many "systems" are there in Minecraft?
    1. Trading (a mechanic which literally turns Hard difficulty into a difficulty easier than peaceful)
    2. Brewing (which is a terrible system as potions are ridiculously underpowered for unstackable items)
    3. Bartering (not really a system because there is only one way to interact with this mechanic and that is by giving a piglin gold),
    4. Enchanting (extremely boring and grindy and made unnecessarily hard by the pointless "too expensive!" mechanic which Mojang have refused to remove or at least come up with a method to circumnavigate it. You HAVE to start enchanting a new item from scratch if you run into this)
    5. Redstone
    6. Breeding (can be used on llamas, horses, donkeys and mules to get better traits but the process is agonisingly boring and grindy)
    7. Archeology (not really a system as there is only one way to interact with it; by brushing blocks)
Everything. Sucks. Everything is lackluster and boring. And yet, Mojang continue to focus their efforts on adding new THINGS. New structures (most of which are painfully rare due to biome-dependency and which are looted and raided the same boring way as the last one), new items that have 1 use, new mobs that don't drop anything and new decorative blocks. But the functionality always sucks.

  • @mrj1897
    @mrj1897 3 місяці тому +2

    Oh boy time to yap:
overall its fair to not like a version, and honestly this is the best video ive seen discussing modern minecraft vs beta. There really isnt a clear winner and i like that this feels more of an argument for how good beta minecraft is to this day, it does make me want to try and play an old version as a challenge one day. But, that being said i do like yapping and breaking down the reasonings for people's opinions and i wanna point out the minor issues i have with your arguments:
1:16 this one is fair, the past few updates included some nice stuff out of context but with how the caves and cliffs update was handled... it definitely felt underwhelming to see the vision of the update being split into 3 parts. And with the silly reasoning with the firefly not being added still urks me to this day, I do think people should reflect on what was added rather than what was not, because honestly we got some pretty nice additions to the game despite it all.
3:59 again this one is also fair, not many people particularly enjoy seeing their favorite mobs get kicked off the face of the earth because one got the most votes. I was one who particularly loved the concept of the copper golem, he looked like a funny dude and i wouldve happily made a redstone build that was decided by the golem pressing one button or not. I will say i disagree with the idea that the armadillo has no involvement with the trial chambers, it introduced wolf armor which ended up being incredibly useful when its behavior got reworked to absorb both fire and creeper explosions, let alone just basic hits from zombies, spiders and skeletons. this makes bringing a wolf with you to a chamber actually worth while, since they scare off skeletons and boggs.
One major issue im noticing from the first 2 arguments is while theyre fair, they have nothing to do with what modern minecraft offers in terms of gameplay, this is simply an argument that mojang hasnt been doing well at managing updates and their mob votes. which is fair, ive warmed up to the fact that what we got was pretty good but i will still be on the fence hoping that they learned their mistakes and will change things around for the better. the future of 1.22 and their new update cycles seem interesting and i hope this means they plan to release smaller but more consistent updates that people are happy with.
5:24 ok this i have a personal problem with. not because i dont see the point youre trying to make but because this is part of an argument that urks me. where do we draw the line between wanting more mobs with functionaility and adding "too many gimmicks". because not all the mobs have to contribute to your day to day gameplay, if they did, this would only fuel the point you make later about the "meta" being an issue, i just want mobs that have a fun interaction personally, not give me a new enchantment that only they can give me, or a mace equivalent for the crabs arms or some random bizarre addition.
6:11 im mixed on this. I completely agree that the modern community is abysmal, but thats a biproduct imo of people being exposed to games all about progression and "work". Players nowadays are obsessed with having the best playthrough in the most efficient way possible. But my main argument against this is what you mentioned later on. While we cant change their minds on how to play minecraft, that doesnt mean we have to play like them, this is a sandbox game through and through where the player gets to decide how they play. And its good that youre attempting to slow down and try and do what you want to do. And honestly imo the best examples of youtubers playing minecraft for fun are the people from hermitcraft, seeing them do their own thing and creating memories with each other and online is what makes minecraft (to me at least) fun.
8:00 now this is an interesting reason for liking beta. I think thats fair and its why i enjoy games like no mans sky when im exploring their planets, it feels empty and i like exploring a place that no one has ever been to. However, an easy rebuttle to this is by turning off "generate structures". Thats the best way to recreate that same feeling, and id argue it would be even cooler if it meant you could make your own village from scratch thanks to villager zombies being a spawnable entity.
9:00 this last one is a pretty good viewpoint on "less is more". However while i agree that creativity is at its best when you have limited blocks to use, that doesnt mean it cant be the same as modern minecraft, Building in survival has its benefits by being more rewarding when you obtain a new block that fits your build. Hell ive been so happy with the addition of bamboo planks because i now can create some wonderful houses out of the funny green sticks. Again this isnt a big issue i have because i understand the sentiment.
honestly i have to say again i do like this video, its well structured and while i dont think your points are convincing that doesnt mean they arent valid, they make a good point that beta has alot to offer even if it doesnt have as much as modern minecraft, and i think its fair to not like how mojang has managed minecraft recently. I just wish the community would stop making scare tactics in order to sell that the game is hopeless and needs an overhaul.

A couple of days ago I read a comment and someone said "I miss old minecraft when people would just build whatever they felt was right but nowadays everything is either copied from reddit or some youtube video" and I fully agree with that.
I am currently playing on an SMP with a friend in 1.21.1, I could not live without modern minecrafts features and we also use quite a few mods (200+) but our main focus is building.
Of course we have farms set up that automate certain things like an Iron Farm and I personally also have an automated Paper Farm with the new Crafter blocks and an automatic wool farm with all wool colors but those are mainly just to have these resources readily available for building because since I've read this comment I've just been going wild, building massive structures that are often useless but look cool and just generally building not in a way I think would look good to most people but that looks good to me.
This is how I play now and having these automatic farms to have the building materials readily available is really helpful because I cannot be bothered to go look for 17,000 (yes that number is not exaggerated) pieces of Iron to craft Iron Blocks, I'd rather just have the Iron Farm going that produces all that for me while I'm building something else so I can get to it immediately.
Currently sitting at 3 1/2 double chests full of Iron Blocks and I don't think that's quite enough for the build I have planned.
To put it simply, Minecraft whether modern or old is what you make of it, if you dislike the meta of automating everything then just don't, if you have friends that do this and you don't like it then don't play with them and just do whatever you feel is right.
(On that note I once played with a friend and we loaded up the world for the first time and within 10 minutes of the world existing he was full diamond gear and armor, I really disliked that so I never played with him again)

I hate it, because I've tried to play realms/servers with friends and siblings before and my brain is still wired so my first thought is what kind of house I'm gonna build and start thinking of lore for the world.
Meanwhile everyone else, by the end of the first play session, has killed the ender dragon, has full enchanted netherrite armor, five villager farms, and some redstone contraption set up fir every available resource and then they get bored and stop playing the realm after the first few weeks.
Meanwhile I just found my first lush cave that someone else already picked dry first.
When I started my beta world, I was taken aback by how challenging it was. In modern, the first night doesn't even require a shelter. In beta, it took in game weeks to even be prepared enough to mine. I love modern Minecraft too, but it will never have the challenge older versions had again.

I'm glad you touched on adding redundant gimmicky things. Having to add a new mob just to make signs and item frames easier to see and a new mob to add yet another scute that serves even less purpose than turtle scutes is just unnecessary. Dog armor could have been implemented without armadillos needing to win the mob vote, and we lost out on the crab claw which would have been a genuinely useful item that I don't see a good way of implementing with what's currently in the game. Now that the mob vote is gone I think we should be seeing a lot less of these ridiculous additions to the game. The Creaking has some cool functionality so I have faith that Mojang can continue come up with interesting and meaningful additions and changes to the game.
But of course "less is more" is a saying for a reason and for some people adding more stuff will inherently detract from the game. I can't argue that they're wrong to enjoy a simpler version of the game.

about the limited block palette, people like it bcse you need to be creative to make something good, but, when i was playing a new minecraft world i had a burnout, bcse i was trying to make a good build and it didn't worked as expected, now i play in 1.12.2, after 1.17 the "new" blocks texture and world gen makes every simple build look ugly, but in old mine everything, every silly, ugly, or just simple house fits in the world normally, i was trying to adapt my buildings to new minecraft, but, after the burnout i realized i don't need to, now i have a pretty decent world full of buildings, and i love it

Sorry for the long essay, but i see no one bringing up this point so here it goes:
The Modern Minecraft Terrain Generation Problem-
I'm going to postulate that the problem started with the Elytra. Now that you can fly (end game loot, btw) Mojang had to make the terrain more enormous. Not only that, but Mojang also assumes that people have beefy computers that can render VERY FAR for muh vistas. Minecraft feels more Oppressive because of the beefy mountains and the vacuous caves. It is no longer "cozy" where YOU are "god" of this world and are impelled to make it come to life.
You see that mountain over there as big as Everest? Yeah, try and make THAT on your own! How can you compete with that?
The mountain is the focal point and not YOUR creations. It's as if Minecraft turned the player into an ant, insignificant against the mighty world generation that does all the "impressive terraforming" for you and Without You. That your creations are just tacked on blemishes against the beauty of the world gen. It makes me sad and feel completely disconnected as I have to try and strain myself to make my builds flow more seamlessly into the landscapes (most humans want to preserve nature around their homes and thus this instinct is carried over when we play Minecraft) It feels bad when you want to make something but have to destroy a pretty hillside.
Not only that but also an Over-Abundance of little points of interests scattered around in what feels like every 20 or so chunks. Shipwrecks, ruined portals, witch huts. villages (which used to be a rare sight) underwater ruins etc. They are too numerous and are places for easy loot. Why? Now Minecraft feels like a Linear game, going from point of interest A to point of interest B, etc. etc. Endless Distractions.
The world is already populated.... It doesn't need you anymore....... I hate that this game gives off the same vibe as in real life. The world is already full and your intervention ultimately is meaningless...
TL;DR: Minecraft is no longer your blank canvas. It is now a frustrating/constricting picture where by you add your creativity on an already crowded and finished canvas...

I've got the same issues with Modern. Burnout is ever-present and multiplayer is just way too hard to get working in a manner that doesn't require I have 64GB of RAM.
So, combine the difficulty in trying to get modded multiplayer working on Java, the metas that have arisen in the game, and the fact you basically need to become a technical player just to get a renewable source of anything that's not wood or charcoal, and you get what I call: A very lonely, boring, and paralyzing experience.

I only use minecraft for building, primarily, and its kinda relaxing just sitting back, enjoying the chaos that happens around the mobvote. Also they should just add all three mobs. They say its so the community can feel like a part of development but i think no one ever has voted in the mob vote and thought «I feel like im part of the development now, YIPEEE!!!»

Not trying to discredit the rest of the video but one specific thing that has to be said because everyone gets it wrong: Armadillo and wolf rework was not a part of Tricky Trials, it was its own small update that happened in April
Also if that were not true, they do fit in Tricky Trials because that update is about combat and Armadillos essentially made a whole new combat style viable by making wolves not instantly die when exposed to any danger

The thing about the old World Gen and the limited block pallet makes a lot of sense.
It's hard to build a simple build in Modern Minecraft without it looking "off" or out of place. And if you're someone who doesn't have a lot of creativity or imagination, Modern Minecraft makes it a whole lot worse.
It doesn't help with self-esteem either, which is what makes Minecraft less fun.

Having a meta in a supposedly sandbox game which is singleplayer is nonsense, i stopped playing bc it became tedious. Whatever you do for yourself seems like a waste of time. I spent so much time mining, gathering netherite, enhancements and such, and it wasn't fun. Just seemed obligatory. Yes, i built around a village... Beta does sound refreshing and much needed for the ones amongst us that were there 10+ years ago.
It's as if minecraft slowly transitioned from sandbox to something else. And it's sad to admit it, but that does produce more viral content, people wanna see the best min-max or farm or whatever, they don't care about that world you've dedicated so much love and care to, and while being mainstream shouldn't matter for us, this IS the metric microsoft will always use to guide future updates.

    • @carinaslima

Minecraft is a sandbox, the elder dragon fight is optional… it is not obligatory to mine, gather netherite. You’re forcing yourself.

Another thing i like about beta or old minecraft in general is the textures they look so much nicer in building. back then a cobblestone oak wood and sand looked great together these days do that and it looks hideous with the new textures

    • @springtrap_66pg66
      @springtrap_66pg66 4 місяці тому +2

the crunchy textures were the best. Everything looks cohesive but "muddy" and don't get me started on how they desaturated all of the colors. The did water dirty.

I agree, though I prefer 1.8 the most, probably. I have to say, the game just sort of felt like it was losing direction since 1.9. They started neglecting the community in endless pursuit of higher profit margins, and that just really made it unenjoyable to play sometimes

I agree that Beta is not better than Modern Minecraft, and that both have their charms and draws.
There's a whole discussion worth of ideas that i have that i feel lead to where we are now, and my personal thoughts and opinions, but ill keep it short and say that:
I think we were bound to get to this point later rather than sooner.
I personally still play modern because it's generally what all my friends play on, and i enjoy the block diversity, but there is a part of me that misses the old Beta days, with good friends now gone.
I hope you all have a wonderful and lovely day.

As much as I like the QoL of Modern, I am willing to sacrifice it all for Beta. Everything feels better with Beta. Excellent terrain generation. No bloat and simple. No end goal or any RPG elements, just a pure sandbox. I am currently building a wizard tower, and then I'm gonna try to build the Shire.
Modern Mojang would have never added the Creeper.

    • @CriticalCipher
      @CriticalCipher 4 місяці тому

You can litterly build a wizard towrr in the modern version if the game, infact you have more choices to be creative with now. Theres no rpg element in modern minecraft, infact rhatd like most peoples complaints for some reason

@@CriticalCipher It's mostly, as was stated in the video as well, that Modern MC suffers from too much bloat and one-trick-ponies. I prefer the simplicity of Beta. I like the simple block palette and how it forces me to be creative with what I have.
