"Showmanship and chops? In a BEGINNER LESSON?"
Sure, why not - if you slow it down.
If you've been playing basic beats and fills, working on your time and technique, and you're hoping to start developing some new cool ideas, this lesson will give you a foundation for chops.
But hold on - what are chops?
Most people use the word to describe repetitive linear patterns (or hand/foot combinations) played quickly around the kit. When drummers go into the practice room and 'shed' (aka jam), they develop technical proficiency with certain patterns.
While groove is just as - if not more - important than chops, it can be fun to shred and come up with variations on a pattern on different surfaces.
In this lesson, Jared shows you six 'chops' you can try, even if you're an elementary drummer. Like anything, it's not going to sound great when you start. And some of these patterns might not sound like much when played slowly, but they'll sound awesome later. Remember to practice slowly to a click and don't try to rip around the kit until you're ready - and be honest with yourself!

Ok, why is Jared such a gem of a human being? Like, seriously. He's great.
Appreciate that, Jake! ❤️
Wanted to comment the same thing.
I know right
Jared is falking awesome.....I'll see myself out.
I heard Jared used to use babies as practice pads so... I don't know, man...
I like that Jared makes me wanna play drums instead of just giving up.
I love playing drums but i'm awful.
Yep ;)
Ikr seeing all these crazy drummers is sometimes demotivating if you think the time you're gonna need to get to that level if so
@@DavidOakesMusic morning pa
Agreed.
Been drumming a few years now and feel like I've hit an intermediate plateau. I just started looking how I can "improve my chops" in the last week. This is very timely!
Glad to hear it David!
Practice concepts and permutations. Jeff Porcaro said groove when you want work, then bring out the chops.
@@DrumeoOfficial hey Drumeo, I was very surprised and shocked that you have not done a reaction to Nightwish ? from Finland -symphonic metal, the Wacken 2013 concert (82,000 fans) is a Gold mine of incredibly amazing music ,their drummer is Jukka Nevalainen until 2014, since then it's been Kai Hahto formerly of Wintersun, the whole concert is considered a seminal event, consider that some reactors have over 2.7 Million views on just one reaction to Nightwish , songs like Ghost River, Song of Myself, Bless The Child,Romantacide, and EverDream will BLOW you away for sure, cheers.
* The most reacted to song on YT thus far is :
NIGHTWISH - Ghost Love Score (OFFICIAL LIVE) : Wacken 2013, : ua-cam.com/video/JYjIlHWBAVo/v-deo.html
Take my advice and pay that membership fee. It is more than worth it. When you feel stuck you can always find somethimg to work on in Drumeo membership packages. I hesitated for wuite some time. Now I am glad I am on board.
Same here bud
Yes I’m definitely just starting out, I am working hard each day in hopes to move up to the status of beginner.
Thank you.
😂 same
@@NintenDub I’m trucking along lol
This is great. When I started playing I went from complete novice to intermediate rather quickly. Thirty-five years later, I'm still an intermediate level drummer - groove for days, next to no chops.
Hey... I was never told I would be the "Decrepit Old Dude In The Studio" for this video!
At least you're trying to keep him honest...these are not beginner level chops!
@@MichaelDSwanson True. I'm a beginner/intermediate drummer..the first two are fine, then it gets chellenging :D haha
@@MichaelDSwanson To Dave's credit, he told me that. But when you slow it down, it can work for anyone!
@@DrumeoOfficial I love you guys, and I'm mostly just giving you a hard time. Next up: Dream Theater for Beginners ("when you slow it down, it can work for anyone!") ;-)
Haha
I love the heckler in Jared's audience. :D
Dave is always up to no good 🙃
Estepario, I can’t get enough of his vids
THIS VIDEO IS TO LEARN, NOT TO SEE HOW MACHINE THE UNCLE IS, IF NOT HOW GOOD YOU CAN BECOME IF YOU "PRACTICE"...😎😁😉Drum for live
That comment at the end is so true, it almost feels like I'm not progressing. But when I go back once in a while, I realize I do improve a lot, but with more skill the perspective changes, which is sometimes discouraging.
This is surprisingly hard, the fill ins in your other tutorial were A LOT easier to learn for me. Thank you very much for this extremely useful content.
Thanks Drumeo you guys are the best, and the fact that you just give out the sheet music without asking for any kind of subscription or e-mail newsletter type of thing, shows your commitment to helping others!
This is a GREAT tutorial for beginners. Especially for those who are on the edge of quitting. You know they've got it but they start getting confused because of 1/4th notes, 1/8th notes and they're like not understanding the difference between reading regular sheet music and drummers sheet music. You really bring it together so it makes since. Thanks for it all!
The end of the video is gold. Jared tapped into two really important ideas. First, in Taoist philosophy, there is the notion that 'right when you think you have it all figured out is probably the time you're the most ignorant.' Second, in educated environments, 'the more you learn, the more you realize you don't know.' Keep learning! Keep practicing! It is amazing all the cool things you'll just keep figuring out.
Estebarioooo yeeesss!!! Love that guy
He's awesome.
I feel you man, what you said at the end about the more you learn the less you feel like you know. I feel like that every time after playing for 23 yrs. crazy how many genres and how many different sounds and techniques you can have on drums. It’s a beautiful thing. Much love.✌🏼✌🏼
Time to get looking at Drumeo membership again. I'm self taught, awful academically, I sweat counting past 4, but you guys are great and I wanna support the channel as best I can. Much respect and love from Ireland 💚✌️
I've been drumming for about 3 years now and i want to say to mr jared and drumeo team thank you so much for providing such amazing videos that helped me very much when i started drumming
Learn chops BUT DONT RELY ON THEM ! Playing in the pocket is way more important.
When someone has chops it could mean that they are playing amazingly in the pocket. It has to do with the quality and proficiency of what the drummer is playing... grooves or fills.
@@DrumeoOfficial I mean don't rely on your bag of tricks. Too many young drummers skip to Hertas or whatever and never practice to a click - and it shows.
@@DavidOakesMusic I agree. I am a lot more impressed and enjoy a good solid groove with great timing, than somebody throwing around their sticks in a crazy tempo but can’t play a cool solid laid back groove. But, if they can do both...
@@KalleBlixtHagholm well my opinion I never learned to play with a click but you can still learn good timing without the click I learned how to play with a band and we never used a click. I use one now in the studio but not live.
@@jamesvandread6695 Oh yes, of course. Timing isn’t dependent on using a metronome, although I think it’s probably a lot easier to learn by using one. With good timing you are able to play accurately even without a metronome. And a band playing live can be incredibly tight and still not follow a rigid tempo at all - as long as the band is in sync, the song can have all kinds of push and pull on the tempo and still sound good.
Was looking for a good idea for a lesson tomorrow, found exactly what I was looking for. Drumeo are the best!
I am on day 2 of having my drums after take one lesson last week. I can slowly but smoothly get through one and two. I plan on doing them all. Thank you so much!!
Love the philosophical plug at the end Jared
Love the ribbing from the peanut gallery - the team is great! And Jared is sassier than usual - always so good at taking the thoughts we often hear for ourselves & moving us right along through & past them. "What? Used to not be into chops? No no no, we're here for today. Today, we do chops."
Rock on, fam. ❤
Please continue this series, till advanced.
Yess!!!!
I have played drum since i was ten and this channel is the most helpful and practical teaching I have ever seen. Thank you so so much!
The first bits from sarah thawer are so important, thats exactly what chops are for and more! Great statement :)
another thing my drum Teacher told me to get better at chops : practice doubles and singles , and alternating them within a sentence in different places . really helped me !
I’m 39 years old. And although I’ve played guitar and bass for 20 years, I never played the drums. I finally bought a set last week. And the progress I have made by using Jared’s videos is unbelievable. What a fantastic tutor.
Even if I haven't watched this channel in a while, you guys are still delivering awesome content
Jared inspires me to get better. Thank you, man!
Yes Jared Falk and Drumeo inspire thousands of drummers all over the world to continue learning and improving their drumming skills. Drumeo is the top drum teaching team there is. Jared, Dave Atkinson and the whole crew are a such an important part of the drumming community.
I am the type that is playing a lot with music for fun and not making much progress. This was a very valuable lesson about practice and how it can change "Oh no I cannot do that" into "Yes I did it!". And it's fun too :)
That hair cut is looking mighty fine Jared
With drumming there is always something you can work on. Its truly a life long journey but never boring.
Let me add two things to these:
1: Once you get the tempo up on each of these chops, work on randomizing the drums you play them on. This will allow you to play them for longer without them sounding repetitive so you can have those long chop fills like the pros.
2: Once you get the tempo up on these, try them using clean doubles on the hands rather than two singles. You'll be surprised how easily you can play these chops fast that way provided you have you doubles down on you foot as well.
Amazing video, so helpful. Thank you Jared !!!!!
very good- i will try and teach- thank you for this great workshop!
At least for me I’ve found that just by playing jazz I have naturally learned to play chops. I personally wouldn’t devote too much practice time to chops until your groove is seriously solid.
Great video, it was both entertaining and useful, thanks!
Now, regarding what is written on your shirt...
I, too, haven't really used calculus since I first learned it, but I'M REALLY GLAD other people do to come up with all the cool stuff we use everyday and to find solutions that make our lives easier and safer.
I'm sure you meant no harm, but at the end of the day, calculus is (almost) just as important as drums, to me at least!
Found this very helpful thank you and you break it down so it's simple to understand amazing 😊
So true, the comment at the end.
Some days I feel like a new intermediate and the next a good beginner.
Can feel a bit ground hog at times but keep practicing and be patient it will come.
Thanks both great lesson 👍
esteparios snare is just crazy 😭 i love it so much
That outro was well spoken. sometimes i get burnt out and need to remember to just enjoy it
Next step get drums lol
Love it bro👊🏾🙂👍🏾;i'll get it day by day, thanks!
In reference to 5:13 comment - hand to foot☺ as a self-learning beginner, I got the 2nd chop right and in a higher tempo in about 20 minutes..starting slowly, you can get it..nice video, the chemistry between you two makes me laugh😀 thanks for your work, highly appreciated..
Jared you are so fun to watch. Also you were who I looked up to when I started!
Thank you so much. ❤️
No problem! 🧡
I agree 100% with Jared from the past: groove all the way! I really feel that chops shoud be a thing we do to practice and never gangrene song with.
Chops shouldn’t be the main focus of so many drummers that forget to be musician first.
Those chops should be tools and not end goals.
Thx for the video though because those exercises are usefull. As exercises 😉
Yes, all we know must lead us toward how much/many we don't know. 🤩
Thank yoo J.
Love the content, Drumeo
Love your new haircut Jared!!
Great video and that is one of the best shirts i've seen.
Thankyou for this
Amazing video.... Thanks for this worth lesson jared bro
Totally Air-Drumming this, Jared 👊💪
I love the bants on this video, well done guys, educational and funny, off to practice my chops!
Thank you drumeo🙏🏻❤️
Gracias me fueron de mucha utilidad , no sabia hacer chops y no sabi como empezar a hacerlos. Saludos desde Mexicali, Baja California
I really am worse than I was in my youth, but your channel has been a blessing for me thanks!
Hello! This guy is my hero on drums.👍😎 Thank's a lot..
ur vids really helping me man, thank u so much
Jared is like too funny 🤣😂I'm learning and having fun with drum basics plus I bought a shirt from drumeo
Not a new drummer, just new to chops, this was helpful
I got tired of trying to copy someone else’s chops, so I make up my own, it’s more fun and easier for me. great lesson tho’ thank Jared 👍🏼
We need more arguments like that 🤣 loved it!
Thank you for great content
You are best teacher
I only want to learn from this guy, he’s so nice!
The talent here is CRAZY😮
How did I never think to learn chops. For the longest time I've felt like I was stuck in the same "I can play drums" but still feel like I'm barely doing anything with the kit or ignoring parts of it. Sure I can drum along to some songs, but am I able to just mess around and play and have it not be really simple stuff? Nope. Chops baby. Gotta learn them. Thank you.
Ok, now I'm more comfy with the meaning of 'chops'. Another great lesson guys. And not that I don't think Dave is gorgeous but he's great in the background heckling Jared - boy needs kept on his toes 😘
Been waiting on this
Nice!
Hilarious and exhilarating to see Jared setting up hard questions on himself and his ideas. Sets the bar high.
I wish I was a better drummer than I am but I honestly haven’t been able to get a kit and get back into the grind of putting in the time needed to be good enough to play along with the songs I want to.
I love Tommy Aldridge and similar players but I’ll never get there - still I’m happy just being able to put a good beat to whatever songs I like to play and that makes me happy. I don’t have aspirations of greatness or trying to be in a band bc I’m 55yrs old and just happy to jam away to tracks in the background and have some fun.
But improvements come along the more I play the songs I like
Great. Thank you sir
Also Dillinger Escape Plans drummer does a drumeo where he instructs on how his chops are incorporated in 16ths and it's AMAZING
Watching these lessons as I got Superior Drummer, I don't know anything about drumming, but I'd love to program them nicely.
Mr. Miyagi is proud that drumeo is taking his teachings to the next level.
I was hoping for an answer to "what are drum chops?" For a long time I assumed "chops" was a synonym for "skills", and I think people do use the word that way too.
Same here, but I found a one-sentence explanation in the description of this video: "Most people use the word to describe repetitive linear patterns (or hand/foot combinations) played quickly around the kit." That's it. No more explanation.
Oh, I guess I should have read the description... but yeah, not a very satisfying explanation.
Jared is a treasure
Jared is my Sprit Animal. Drumeo Edge for life

we need a lefty drummer because we can't understand this simple exercises when we see this awesome video, cheers
Thank you for the tutorial. The kids and myself are loving it. We're going to have to figure out a way to share the full drum kit, but we can do that. We have practice pads as well.
This channel rocks... I need some W.A.S.P. songs!
Okay time to step it up!!
Nice sounding drums
@elestepariosiberiano, eres ejemplo en Drumeo. Enhorabuena.
I would have called these fills but I prefer the term "chops" sounds so much cooler. Totally agree with Jared about practice, it's to do with vision, when you start you only want to do the next thing but the more you learn the more you realise there is to learn so you start to feel like you're getting behind. If you're pushing for perfection you'll always feel inferior.
Great video!
Спасибо большое, очень хотел научиться)
Bueniiiiiiisimo 🤘🏼
He looks a little like Brann Dailor. Also, those drums sound amazing!
Exelente chops !!!!
Thank you for the lesson Jared and all Drumeo Team. I'm still a beginner drum and play on my church. Can i combine 2 chops as a 2 bar chops?
And It's Jared!
Isso aí aqui no Brasil tá uma febre!😂🥁🔥
I love chops and groove
