I’m a guitar, flute, and piano player for over ten years. I just started playing drums 6 months ago after picking up a gretsch energy kit at a really good price. Since then I’ve fallen in love with playing drums and experimenting with recording techniques and sounds in a studio environment. Just want to say that I consistently come back to your videos because they’re fantastic and that you’ve taught me some really good techniques and tips as I’ve been learning on my own. Cheers!

@@xanlosgames6270 hey coming at you with an update! I still have the gretsch energy kit, but this past year I ended up finding a 90's made in England premier xpk kit with lacquer finished shells for 400 bucks on craigslist! Its in great shape and even came with decent hardware. It's become my main recording and practice kit. I'm still keeping the energy in case I ever need a spare kit in a different space and I currently have storage room for it. Unfortunately, last month I had a seizure and fell, dislocated my right shoulder and fractured my humerus where the tendon that allows me to lift my arm was anchored. Having surgery in a couple days, so hopefully I can get back to playing drums in the next several months as it heals. It sucks, but at least I've been able to play a bit of electric guitar without too much discomfort. I'm on anti seizure meds now, so hopefully it won't happen again. I know your comment was a while ago, but how are you doing on your drum/music journey!?

@@wesleyhughston5358 I really love my energy kick with the remo fiberskin felt tone reso head. It sounds really good when I record it using the electro voice re20. Perfect for lighter playing, but it still has a good impact when you dig in. Definitely far from a modern kick sound, but vintage in a way I like.
Overall, it's a good kit for the price.

I kinda wrecked my left ring finger and havent been able to play the guitar without hurting and the same goes for drums and its been about a month or so now. Also I had to reinstall everything on my laptop (blue screen of death) and lost a ton of my music so Ive been kinda recoiling to having to restart pretty much. The Doctor did it again!! I’ve been playing since sixth grade and learned to play on a “Drum Set”, “Drum Kit” playing these beats on my own. It is always refreshing to go back to basics and find those areas where you can pick out certain basic beats and build them into something beautiful just by listening to the basic structure or it’s foundation as the Great Doctor Brown has described here. Outstanding! Much appreciate this basic session to always go back to basics and check yourself. Love It!!

I had drums around me most my life and padded around on them for years. I even did my own tracks but never thought of myself as a drummer. Then I started to watch beat down Brown and learned more in a few months than I had in all that time. Come to find out I'm really still a beginner when even though I breezed through the practices and then could not get past number 7 because I realize I almost always hit the base drum on the downbeat. Bad habits are hard to kick (no pun intended) but these gave me new goals to get my playing level up..I have been doing all your exercises and hand work and it's really improved my playing and feel quite a bit,.breaking it down like you do in such great consise ways is really great and super helpfull, you are my favourite UA-cam teacher and greatly appreciated..now I got a get a shirt but I'm afraid I'm not ready for prime time just yet.

I still think a beginner is going to benefit a lot from this, start with his other stick control videos etc to get up to speed for this one. Every great artist can tell you stories of starting out stumbling around like a toddler. The best is feeling that accomplishment of thinking you can never get there and one day you all of a sudden reach the next level of accomplishment. it's the fun of that journey thsts important.

My guy!! This is absolutely amazing.. I am recovering from Aortic dissection OHS.. bought an Ludwig Evo kit from a dude, 6mos. old, and heads had never been tightened.. for $300 bucks!!! Nice Zildjian symbols and all.. I woke up from the coma feeling like a teenager again, I dabbled a little on a cb5000 kit as a teen.. I was looking around for a good tutorial on how to play for beginners. You, by far have the easiest to follow and clear informative instructional videos I have found. You get this, a lot, but thank you Man! I hit some dark patches trying to recover from my surgery.. trying to heal your breast plate back together isn't an easy task.. and that's just the bone. I had a nice kit thrown at me by the cosmos, I found you.. now I'm just happy healing brother, and jamming my ass off!!! It's good to be alive!!!!!!!!! Wish you all the best and wish you could all feel like I do right now! 🥁

Another great lessons! If we were paying attention we noticed that the kick drum leads the measure, and that the one beat (or the and of the one beat) is giving the band its anchor or foundation (THEY are counting on YOU). Beats 5 through 10 are money in the bank. Can't say enough good things about your teaching style! Love it! How about a blues (12 bar) lesson? And thanks for showing the benefit of playing with a metronome, very important for beginners and no embarrassment for pros.

Hi Rob, I notice a lot of drummers move their legs (both kick and hat legs) when they aren't playing actual notes or working the hi-hat/kick. Is this a time-keeping technique that I should start using? I notice a lot of drummers also ghosting 8th notes on the snare as well (most likely as a time-keeping measure, because it is often too quiet to add much texture to the groove). I've never been able to do that on the snare quietly enough to keeping it from changing the texture of the groove. I think that too early on in my playing as a drummer I tried to play on the back-beat and never really got a consistent feel for 4-on-the-floor style playing. For instance, I rarely ever click the hi hat on all of the quarter notes when I'm playing, unless I feel like the song specifically calls for it or I'm trying to play something jazzier. Is this is a bad habit that I should start addressing. Maybe ai should also add: while I did receive some drum lessons initially, most of my practice consists of playing along to recorded music through headphones and with a couple bands I play in at actual rehearsals. I am trying to change that and get back to fundamentals, but it is hard to find the time on top of learning new songs to perform in 2 groups and working 50 hr weeks in an already very physical job. Thanks Rob, your channel is an incredible resource to drummers; your production value and insights into drumming are top-notch!

True, it is to keep that "pulse" going. You need it to be internal, but some physically do this as well.

Because of this video. My 8 month old daughter loves drumming with her hands on any surface she can get them on. She can hold a solid beat. I need to figure out where to go from here to get her prepared for the real deal, sticks and all :) --- In the mean time, we listen to your beats straight through multiple times a day while she sits and watches intently in her jumper, keeping a beat along with the video. Our Grandfather was a Drum Major in the military and was very active as a stand-in with many many famouse 60's drummers. We have music flowing in our families blood and I think I have the next gen drummer on my hands. Mr. Rob, do you have any recommendations on how to help develop this talent at 8 months old? (Liked, subbed and alerts on btw)

Love your lessons Rob. Q: do you recommend that beginners ‘count’ in their heads? 1,a,and,a, 2,a,and,a.....
    Thanks

    • @windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823
      @windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 3 роки тому +1

      You mean count in 16ths?
      1 e and uh 2 e and uh....
Depends on time signature and tempo. Assuming you're doing 4/4, which you are if you're new
If it were 12/8, that would be wrong. 12/8 counts 1 and uh, 2 and uh. 3 and uh, 4 and uh....
Look up Stepping Out by Joe Jackson. Try to count in 16ths. Good luck. Lol. Its REALLY fast. So is bodysnatchers by radio head or Rio by Duran Duran.
      At that point. You'll either count eighths (1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &) or quarters (1 2 3 4).
The 16ths will still be there as you'll need them for two handed high hats. You'll be counting 1 e and uh 2 e...alternating both hands on HH.
The trick is to ALWAYS go to the snare and hit it on the way back from a fill. Otherwise it don't work. Lol

It depends on the discipline level of the child. If she is showing interest at this young of an age, there’s no harm in letting her start playing and experimenting. As a parent of a similar aged daughter, she might have short moments where she is open to being taught, but ultimately might not take instruction from someone until at least grade school age.

I bought a set second hand for $125, and it’s a great way to pass time, groove, practice, or blow off some steam. I’m the kind of person who appears to be able to keep their calm, but that’s because I like to hit drums when I’m upset haha. I say, if you can shell out the coins, the only way to know if you’re good, is to try to get there, right? Good luck 😊🙌🏾
