In a funny, gamey way, this iteration of Civ more than previous ones gives me a sense of how ancient wars actually came about and progressed. It could just be my weird 76 year old self imagining things, of course, but somehow, Civ 7 really scratches an itch I've sensed for a long, long time time.
Interesting, they've taken a page out of Endless Legend's book with City Building. In that game, the cities gather resources from each city tile and all tiles around them. Every 2 population growth, you can build Burrow Districts to build another city tile to expand it, reaching out to get more resources. However, if the city was besieged, it lost access to the outside tile's resources, only having the city tiles themselves. Each of those tiles also had a level - if you surround a city tile with at least 4 other city tiles, it will level up and start producing a lot more influence. One of the factions gimmicks was that they can only settle one city, but you can expand it a lot easier than other factions and can level up city tiles to level 3, having a big megacity. Nice to see how some 4X games pick and share ideas to use together, in their marketplace of ideas.
WOW this is a good video. I've watched the majority of civ 7 content (I think), but you really made this hour do work. Clear explanations, excellent gameplay, captivating watch. I hope Firaxis knows that the 1hr embargo on content has caused some serious cross-polination on civ channel audiences. That's a subscription from me!
grabbing that 6 happiness from Uluru would also grant you the two desert tiles in NE direction. Now your other town has them and the Uluru bonus does not apply to them
I'm getting some serious Age of Empires 2 vibes and I'm here for it! I am very curious about the PVP in this game. I hope it is balanced. I used to wreck people in AoE and I'm super competitive. This will be my first Civ game since the 90's.
What a good video! Pravus explained Civ 7 very well!!! So... I am excited to play this game myself, when it comes on 11th February, 6 days after my Birthday!
My thoughts: 17:55 That befriending system is basically Endless Space or AoW 4. 20:58 He did try to conquer it for like 3 years, until the British cut him off with their fleet. 22:28 Gold is almost more important in Civ. And the value is boosted via Towns, as you can only get stuff with money in them. 27:06 Your Capital Parsa has one as well. 33:52 I heard it is always best to use the commander abilities to attack, even if it is only one unit. 44:40 I think you can toggle between growth and the town's specialty. 50:48 10/200 is 5%.
Oh, yeah! I´d appreciate to see a lot of more content from Civ VII. I´m not planing to buy it, but I like your style of presenting it! But please don´t torture your voice so much. Get well soon! (I can recomment onion juice)
I'm really impressed by what I've seen of the game so far. And the modularity really gets my hopes up, not just for what modders will potentially get up to but that we might actually get some meaningful DLC additions that add some good value. I'd love to see them explore the possibility of adding different ages, whether that makes it into a 4+ age run, or you could cycle a selection of 3 of them ending at a different point than the modern age.
ye AI not looking so good tbh you just steamrolled them in a war on Deity, also hate the fact the AI just goes half way across the continent with a settler there should be a limit to how far you can go from your last settlement.
While I agree the AI needs improvement, there shouldn't be a limit on how far a settler can go...that's literally the most stupid thing I've heard. Sometimes there's resources that you really want that aren't close to you, and thus you need to build a city near it
You should know how it works by now. They always continue to add to the game, just like the every previous Civ game. I am sure things will be changing as they add more expansions to the game.
Awesome video, love your narration, and I am excited to play myself. Have to say though, idk what you mean at 3:27 “The AI is competent”. Your game play shows the exact opposite, Ashoka left their capital undefended, when bordering a militaristic nation that’s building an army… and then Napoleon forward settling without military support. Nothing I’ve seen in the previews suggests any improvement to the AI, in these regards at least. What’s your honest opinion?
I think they are better at building infrastructure and districts and they can keep up more easily with human players yields wise. But still have poor decision making as we can see haha I hope that something like the loyalty mechanic will be added soon, to prevent the AI from forward settling dumb cities everywhere.
If you could add more legacies beyond the four we see what would you add? Not certain if it would count as already in this game but Art would be fun to see.
Who is that between Confucious and Harriet Tubman? It looks like there are two versions of him. I don't think there has been an official announcement but I wouldn't be surprised if there was one. By the way you can see him when Pravus chooses Xerxes at the beginning of the video
I really want to be optimistic, but honestly I think the mix-and-match leaders are going to suck all the immersion out of the game for me. I hope there's a setting to enforce historical picks.
This all looks really good and a lot of fun, but I'm worried the AI is (like classic Civ AI) a little brain dead. Leaving a town (and the capitol) completely undefended while parading an army of entirely (?) slingers far to the north just to establish a town so far away you couldn't have feasibly defended it is kind of a dumb move, and I know from dumb moves. And on Diety? Yikes.
WTF do cities get demoted to towns and even worse, resources switched around!! I dont want to play a puzzle, settling nice land and imroving it is one of my favourite things in civ, and they seem to want to change it into playing puzzles and just earning points for each age...
The fact that multiple people are beating Deity before the game is even out shows how flawed Civ difficulty is. It's pretty much: On higher difficulties the AI starts with everything, you start with nothing, but if the dice roll your way and you survive the first 100 turns (more or less based on game speed) then you win. Boring and lame as ever.
lol, we are talking about people with literal thousands of hours in these games and at least 50-100 in Civ 7 There is also a few Bugs which benefit the Player. Like infinite flankling bonus stacking. On top of every deity game i saw having an insane Start.
@ Am I wrong? I am not calling him boring and lame, I am calling just giving the AI huge bonuses and calling it a day boring and lame. How about giving it more "meta" gameplay at higher levels, or giving it a bonus as time goes on, rather than heaping the bonuses at the start? Its such a lazy way of doing it.
The more I watch those pre-release materials, the less want to buy this game :/ I really don't like those changes to civilizations changing with each era.
Well then I guess these previews work for you:). I am excited to play. Always play with the same few civs. Like the fact that I am now forced to experiment a bit:)
I will refrain from buying. It all looks like this: according to the build you need to take nation 1, another player has already taken it, you leave it from the lobby and a single play game for 70 bucks... well, that's something in the language of the rich. I'll wait for a discount that suits me

Nice to see an elder enjoying new games! 🙂
The promotional videos are great, but I don't think they really give me an idea what it is like to play the game.
Xerxes of Persia is like a terminator with +6 attacking power.

The cost of getting the game early
"Oh good its Napoleon, of Egypt?"
Well Napoleon did conquer Egypt in 1798. so its technically not too out of the ordinary.
now i think you mean he failed to conquer egypt
The "Soft Reset" for each age will be interesting. Hoping it won't slow down your progress too much.
Persian Space Marines!
My first playthrough will be Greece, followed by Persia. There is a reason I studied ancient history, lol.
grabbing that 6 happiness from Uluru would also grant you the two desert tiles in NE direction. Now your other town has them and the Uluru bonus does not apply to them
Just like Petra, as he said lol
The way expanding cities using Districts/Buildings works in this game reminds me a *lot* of Endless Legend... This is a good thing.

The game needs a loyalty pressure mechanic. Those troll settles were too much.
Do you know if the PS5 version will support keyboard and mouse controls?
The town mechanic reminds me of colonies from Stellaris
