I'm a beginner (~6.5 months in). I've found that clenching the fist the entire workout/sparring session really fatigues the arms. I like to keep a loose fist and clench either right before or as soon as I launch the punch. In my limited experience so far, if a punch gets choked up or makes contact early and you're trying to clench your fist at the last second, there's a higher chance of jamming your hand up until you learn that mind/body connection to gauge timing and distance. So when I'm not throwing a punch, loose hand to relax the forearm. As soon as a punch gets initiated, tighten up (with or without gloves).

clench milliseconds before impact not before throwin a punch it will travel faster if you arent clenching, do not clench until impact

I was told many years ago, to imagine holding a roll of quarters in your hand when shadowboxing, so at the end of the punches you have to squeeze your hand tight a little, otherwise the roll will fly out of your hand.

Yay! I def shadow box with my fists slightly open like I have something small in my palm. Keeps my hands and arms from getting tired. I'm old - I need all the tips I can get! Stay well Coach!

I guess you cant really do this every single punch? I dont think any boxer ,clenches their first at the last second every throw. Surely not.
