    Tommy Conwell was my 3rd grade teacher in the mid 90s. Best teacher I ever had. He always had a guitar in class and would use music in all his lessons. He made school fun. Great guy and great musician. For those that didn't know, he taught elementary and middle school for a few years in the late 90s, early 00s.

    This band should've been humongous. Tommy Conwell & The Young Rumblers' familiar-but-fresh Classic/Roots/ Blues / Rock-Meets-Modern-Rock sensibility stood-out head-and-shoulders from the middle of the seemingly endless sea of Glam Metal. The band - and Tommy Conwell in particular - was a potent mixture of talent, attitude, and energy. What really makes this song unique to me is the way Tommy mixes quite disparate singing styles: Old Southern Black-Man Blues growling, with New Wave-inflected White-Boy Rock singing, and the respective same for his guitar playing. Although this single did score a well-deserved #1 spot on the Mainstream Rock Charts in 1988, its pithy #74 showing on the Billboard Hot 100 was disappointing at best, and was clearly indicative of the general public not being sure what to make of this blond-haired, blue-eyed 1980's rocker who sounded like B.B. King crossbred with John Eddie. Clearly a forgotten gem from 1988. [CORRECTION: This song and video were out in 1986, not 1988.]

    • @realmusicnj
      @realmusicnj 9 років тому +3

      Probably will never know the full story but can't help wondering how they didn't explode. Think re-doing this song and some of the others on the Columbia album didn't help things. And keyboards on the independent release seemed to be de-emphasized for whatever reason. You're right there weren't many bands better to see live than the Rumblers. Even this song while I like this version the original is far superior.

    • @dragonfly31869
      @dragonfly31869 9 років тому +4

      Well said, Bob. Too bad the glam rock/hair bands took the spotlight from real, original talent like these dudes.

    • @realmusicnj
      @realmusicnj 9 років тому +4

      Agreed. Though you said it far more clearly than I would have. The decision to diminish the keyboards and some of the other musicianship and do some of the gimmicky stuff they did on the Columbia album may be one of the most boneheaded in music history.

    • @RHINOSAUR
      @RHINOSAUR 7 років тому +5

      I saw them live many times in the 80s, and the Columbia album could not match the raw live sound of their original indy release. As good as they were, they were not only victims of poor management and handling, but their coming up in a time when hair-metal was huge, as well as bands like Jane's Addiction and Faith No More foretelling the coming Grunge scene, were too much to compete with. The Rumblers ended up sounding hokey and passe to a fickle record-buying public.

    • @bobthebear1246
      @bobthebear1246 7 років тому +3

      RHINOSAUR Yeah, I can definitely see what you're talking about, especially in the context of what was going-on, and the seismic shift that was about to happen soon afterwards. I can definitely understand how TC&TYR would have gotten caught-between these eras. (Oh, and don't forget about Red Hot Chilli Peppers, too!) Rock on, man!

    Steve Mountain was the manager of Tommy Conwell, The Hooters and other acts during the 80s with his Cornerstone Management..he also owned and or managed a bunch of clubs in Philly ..Ardmore Cabaret, Ambler Cabaret, Chestnut Cabaret and he turned The Stone Balloon in Delaware into the Main Street Cabaret. I didn't know he screwed anyone over but he is now managing professional athletes. He obviously had some talent to get to the level he was back in the 80s. It was a great time. I worked at the Stone Balloon and saw TC many times, Hooters, Sharks, Jack of Diamonds, etc....Bill Stevenson started it all back in the 70s with The Stone Balloon!!! Long live rock.

    I was the only one in the neighborhood owning this on vinyl, because the record store owner knew what I liked. He imported loads of stuff from all across the world, and whenever I entered the store he just picked something from under the counter from the secret stash and handed it over. It got to a point where I did not even bother listening to it before I paid - I knew I was going to like it. Thus I had - among others - such gems as Tommy Conwell, Noiseworks, Johnny Diesel and the injectors, Tom Kimmel, David Baerwald, Barney Bentall and John Kilzer in my collection, and I owned Alannah Myles first album 6 months before it was even released in Europe.
    It is quite a few years ago by now. Guess I am getting old.

    I have been in Philly as an German Au-Pair 1984/85-1986/87. I lived in Narberth, Tommy and Paul used to live in Ardmore, the next village at that time. I have seen them several times in the 23 East-Carbaret and the Chestnut Carbaret and make friends with them and other musicians, that were managed by Steve Mountain and Dan Rieser....Long long ago...it´s too bad, that they never made it really big, the live shows were terrific!!!

      I remember Paul showing up to shows in Lebanon driving a old yellow or maybe orange plumbers van. Those guys were humble and very cool. I enjoyed the music and the good attitudes.

    Fuck yeah, Philly rock-n-roll. I was two when this came out and I feel like I missed out. I wish I could hit up South St. and hear shit like this. Maybe a cat like me could get some work if there was still a scene.

    Just found this video. I haven't heard this song in 36 years yet I remembered every word of the lyrics. Used to go see them every time they played at the Stone Balloon. Does anyone know where this video was filmed?

    I wish. I was there to see that, But I did latter on ended up opening for his band out in California, in San Diego,and out in LA.ca.Yes I cherish and will die taking the memories to my grave when I die. I; to this day Can,t stop thinking of those 7 Days/ or the shows playing for them as a opening act what a life time event that was for me, and the band I was in at the time also. We Are So lucky that we had the moment to be there in real life with Tommy and the Boys( The Rumblers.) DITTO miss um.

    Does anyone remember seeing them at the Bottle and Cork? I'm from DC and remembered a few rumbles (pun intended) with the Philly crowd in the late 80s and early 90s.

      Unfortunately, I did not. I wish I had! But I've been there. Dewey Beach right?? That place had some big names come through there. I believe it closed down. Or maybe that was the Rusty Rudder next door to that. Not sure.

    I think they had a good label push behind that first record. I remember MTV giving them lots of support too. They were everywhere for a short time with this song and it was good. Alas...they needed more hooks and hit songs. Tough Business Rock n Roll...

    @3musicmakers Actually the original is on the "Walkin' On The Water" LP on Antenna Records from 1986. It was the same local label that released The Hooters' "Amore" LP before they were signed to Columbia.
    This is the re-record version from the "Rumble" LP in 1988.
