James should have had a cameo in Top Gun 2 as a pilot who crash lands.
Unless he's wearing his "trusty glove" at least.
hollywood isn't cool enough to think of that.
While screaming ''AAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!''
And his only line is "aaaaasssss"
Where did you learn to fly?
I seriously think Shinobi 3 doesn't get the praise it deserves enough. The game considering its 16 bits, nailed nearly every category:
Fun factor, GREAT music and sound effects, easy controls, great character designs, stages, stage ambience, special effects, and a good ending!!
It had all
all the Shinobi Genesis games are outstanding, and all easily top 10 games on the console
One of the greatest soundtrack ever made
New favourite James quote- “that’s some Genesis does!”
Legendary notes
Genesis does what Nintendon't
Harry Peterson he probably thinks a Genesis is called a “Mega Drive”
@Harry Peterson Damn Yankees, using the wrong name...
James Bancroft you mean that probotector is actually contra hard corps? And it’s not all robots?
Probbaly one of my favorite games I remember spending the night at my friends house playing sega all night until mad tv at 11pm then tales from the crypt at 12 good times
Lol same. Good times man.
Good ole times, tales from the crypt theme is classic
See for me it went, Lion King (the game), then Conan, then Tales From the Crypt. And my friend got so scared he puked during the episode, "Judy Is Not Herself Today"
And in the NES days, it was In Living Color.
Man, i remember playing Revenge of the Shinobi and loving it, and then Shinobi 3 comes outta nowhere and blow my mind! AWESOME!
Shinobi 4 and PS2 Shinobi are glaring at you
This game made me feel like a badass ninja back in the day
Mike:" there's a timing to the jump" James: clickclickclickclickclickclickclick... every time ,no matter the game its 'clickclickclickclickclickclick...' 😂
He clickclickclickclickclick's so much it's no wonder none of his controllers work right
lol. so true. I don't understand how someone can't just take his time and not rush ahead and act with precision in games. just baffles my mind.
Even though this game is hard he still manages to suck ass more than most 😂
@Most Deadest Pool of em All. "Sometimes, you just can't get rid of a bomb".
He finished an astonishing amount of hard games with clickclickclickclick
I do love the sweet clicky sound of the OG Genesis controller.
that's the sound of joy in a simpler time.
It was my favorite controller ever. Maybe not the highest quality, but it sure fit my size hands and playing style the best.
I agree. And you get +2 because VADER pic 😍
Pierre Proulx 🖖
It's clacky, not clicky.
The surfboard and horse level of this game are my absolute favorite. Love the soundtrack of both. This game is perfection.
Finally Shinobi III! Also TFIV is amazing. the music is some of the best on 16bit
Actually James.... it IS supposed to be Mecha Godzilla! Godzilla,Terminator, Batman, Rambo, Spider man & Devil man have all had cameos in Shinobi games.. some were removed/changed in the US for obvious reasons.
The end boss of this game is actually the boss of the original Shinobi, resurrected and made into a cyborg.
this games soundtrack is so damn good, the horseback stage music got me pumped-up back then
It's a fantastic soundtrack!
As far as I'm concerned; yes, this is the best Genesis game.
Edit: The composers killed it with the soundtrack too. I still recall every track.
Koshiro didn't compose this
@@screwdriver1996 Ah you're right. I never knew he wasn't responsible all these years. Well, learn something new every day.
@@Retrosys I stand corrected. Still personally prefer 3's soundtrack, but Revenge's is legendary as well.
I remember being so good at the "surf ninja" level boss that I was able to synchronize the music to the different stages of the fight, just to make it more "cinematic" to myself.
You've got the wrong Shinobi game there bud. You're thinking of Herzog Zwei.
I loved Shinobi 3 as a kid, well.. I still do now as well. Such an amazing soundtrack. Definitely in the top 5 I think, but Phantasy Star 4, Shining Force 2 and Sonic 3 and Knuckles are ahead of it.
It is such a delight to see you guys prasing my favorite Genesis game (along with Sonic 3 & Knuckles). Great play! I don't want to brag (I'm not a show off), but I have memorized the entire game and I can end it not losing lives and not using magic, but I never managed to end it with no damage at all (but got close). As you said, it is just a matter of memorizing the patterns.
One quick advice, you guys never use "block", if you shoot a shuriken and don't let the button go, he will get into defence mode and can block projectiles.
Same for me, but sometimes i die at some boss or at the last stage's jumping thingy.
I love watching James and Mike play games. It's like the old days playing games and chillin with friends having a blast. I could watch this series FOREVER! ♥️👾
Don't forget all the dumb conversations we had while we were playing, just like they do.
haha when you’re a kid you don’t even care what’s really the “best” game, you just end up loving some random bad games as your favorites
Boogerman or bust.
I remember for a time Eternal Champions was my favorite fighting game. These days Street Fighter Alpha 2 is my all time favorite.
You had to work with what you had.
Some truth to this lol
@@ChrisLT The entire feel to boogerman was something else ey
I wish Sega would make a new console
Pluto?
Dreamcast 2?
Super Genesis?
Ultra Mega Drive?
Mitsuraga *Mega Dreamcast*
Mega Dream Genesis
Sega Regenesis
17:41 When James knows he needs to do another Snes vs MD AVGN episode
Does anyone els really enjoy the way Mike says boss? 43:50 he is always saying it like an oldschool mafia thug :D
Ey bwoss!
James, you mean.
@@Diogene_Balbeurno he meant Mike
The last stage they played is one of the coolest stages. Ever seen in a game. And you CAN beat without powers.
The Body Weapon boss in stage 3 is still one of my all time favorite boss designs I've seen on the Genesis/Megadrive.
This was one of my favorite games as a kid: I still play it on the PS4's Genesis collection.
- Double-tap forward to run
- Attack while running to use your sword (double damage)
- Hold the attack button while touching the ground to block
(PS: Not my favorite, but it really might be the most well made Genesis game)
Mike was the heart and soul of Avgn. It’s soulless now.
Wow, the moving platform is somehow managing to both be below, and behind the static platforms at the same time.
Amazing.
Dying and killing the boss at the same time... is like climbing a mountain, getting to the summit only counts... if you make it back down.
I grew up playing this game, definitely one of my favorite genesis games
Been a huge fan of you guys forever. Initially it was just AVGN, and it got me through a dark time in my life. You guys and ERB literally saved my life. I'm a big retro game collector and you guys gave me validation in my hobby. That's not important past that point. What I'm here to say is I'm slightly younger than you guys but I love your passion. I love that someone else fires up their old systems and still plays the classics. Thank you for being you. You make a living off of it too?! Yeah, enough said. Don't ever stop guys. So much love from me to you, I can't express enough how much you guys inspire me.
You don't need the jump magic spell to beat that level.
No, but it helps a lot
does it look cool?
I use a lot of shit that I don't have to just to make the game look cool
....yeah, it will get you killed.
no Zelda reference on the entire episode? wtf?!
Thank God
@@kingkold I know. lol
Shinobi III is one of my favorite games of all time
and another thing i willmention is that it made me feel like a ninja
How...? "Of all time."? The newest God of War? Nier: Automata? Sekiro Shadows Die Twice? Valkyria Chronicles 3? Just to offer a few. I love AVGN and no doubt the classic games can be fun, but they just can't compare to the compelling story telling and gripping gameplay of many modern games.
The games I was drawn to as a child(ish) were Sonic, Mario, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Jack and Daxter but those games are absolute pebbles compared to the monuments of modern games.
You would have to be living in a cave for these games to be your favorite. Basically, if you haven't kept up with any modern games then, sure, games like that can be your favorite. But if you have played any of the aforementioned games how do you possibly believe old school holds a candlelight to nowadays?
@@spin.chicken I think you don't understand that people have different preferences. Also, in terms of gameplay, you have no idea of what you are talking about. More complex games with more mechanics and better graphics don't mean better gameplay. For example, if we look at Metroid, by your logic everyone would think that the Prime games are better than Super Metroid, which isn't the case. To this day, Super Metroid is considered one of the best games of all time. Is Mass Effect Andromeda considered better than the original trilogy? No.
I do agree that games have improved and that many are blinded by nostalgia, but if you only depend on the newest, more advanced games... I think you are the one missing out. I do love many new games and many others are regarded as my favourite, but there's also many games from more than a decade ago that are among my favourites and that no new game or entry in the series has been able to entertain me as much as those.
I don't want to be rude but it really is a simple concept, and it baffles me that some people have so much difficulty to understand. Also, I played God of War and it's a great game, but I really didn't find it as appealing a others did. I enjoyed it, but I enjoy this game (Shinobi 3) more and have replayed it many times on my 3DS. Sometimes games simply don't click with you and you find more entertainment in something more simple. It doesn't make my opinion right or wrong, just different from yours.
@@DQSpider why are you assuming I haven't? That's very illogical. I can't make such an objective opinion or comparison without having played all the games mentioned above.
It still surprises me how easily James gets flustered over getting hit or missing a jump.
for one of these james and mike mondays, yall should play Co-op Streets of Rage 2 for Genesis
The best!
The nerd in me has to say this. The Utrom race never had actual bodys, when Krang says he used to have a body he means an automaton that would help him move. Thats why he builds the new suit, the Utrom are incredibly smart but useless with out a mode of transport. Hope this nonsense info helped XD
This my favourite Shinobi game of all time! I love Revenge of Shinobi, and some of its boss AI is a bit more inventive, but for sheer style and playability Shinobi III was amazing. I recall it getting lukewarm reviews here in the UK at the time though which was criminal. The score was incredible too, and everyone assumed it was Yuzo Koshiro who wrote it, but it actually wasn't.
Those UK critics were CRAZY! This is easily one of the greatest games on Genesis/Megadrive!
Definitely one of my favorites on the genesis, had it ever since I turned 5 years old and I still play it. Everything about it is amazing, the graphics, the sounds, the gameplay, and the music oooh man I love this soundtrack!
So many secrets missed. I remember feeling such a sense of accomplishment beating this as a kid. I bought it from the bargain bin at best buy on a blind purchase. It was a great surprise back then.
Pretty sure there's a lives code for shinobi 3, i know there's a infinite shuriken code.
i remember a day when I was 6 years old and my father bought a cartridge with this game for me. one of the happiest days of my childhood.
It's about time you played one of the shinobi games!
you can diffidently do the cliff stage with out the jumping magic, also you guys never block anything, WTF
To be fair, the blocking is very cryptic and only useful in very specific points. Mainly just against Mecha Godzilla and the final boss.
Can you guys play Bonanza Bros on Sega Genesis? It’s an amazing co-op game that I personally feel people don’t talk about much.
If you guys have a version of Revenge of Shinobi with the "banned bosses" intact, you should play that. Then you'll get to fight Rambo, Arnold as the Terminator, a Spider Man who transforms into Bat Man, and the regular Godzilla. For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, look it up. :)
I'm 18, and bought a Sega Genesis with a collection of games not too long ago, because I've always been fascinated by older games. I tried most of them, and Shinobi III is easily my favorite. My second favorite would have to be Vectorman. (The list would be unfair if I included Mortal Kombat)
There's a shinobi game where Spiderman, Batman, and Godzilla are the boss stages. You should do that one.
Shinobi 2
Shinobi 3 is an amazing game but I prefer Revenge of Shinobi for the more challenging gameplay with more depth and that Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack.
Same.
It is a better game, it has better challenge and definitely has better bosses!
I really like the JUUL buildings in the background of the surfing level.
Woahhhh
With Mango pods in
Phantasy Star IV and Shing Force 2 are definitely my favorite Mega Drive games.
Spot on. Such classics.
Totally agree. My two favorite RPG games (as well as two of my favorite overall games period). So much fun.
Wooo... Shinobi 3 the best Shinobi game :D
And i love that godzilla
If it's not the best Genesis game it's certainly my favorite. Especially the music. No other game has such excellent unique music. It really sets the mood from the title screen throughout the game.
I wanna call James "Commander Nerd" in that getup.
Thunderforce IV is available on Switch and is Awesome.
Have you guys done Shinobi 2 (Shinobi's Revenge) ? I feel like Mike / Ryan had covered it already but I don't remember... Anyways, it's a great game you should give it a try too. (PS: there are Marvel and DC characters that make an appearance in the game)
The best part about this game is that you feel like a badass ninja while playing it. No other ninja game gives you that feeling
The best Sega Genesis games clearly are Revenge of Shinobi and Streets of Rage 2.
you need to wash your hands with acid after typing that hahaha. I will never understand what it is people like about sor 2 so much... sor 1 for me was the best 2 was shit and 3 was a little bit better than 2 but not as good as 1 imo.
One of my favourite genesis games I kinda would like to see a modern revival of the series
one of the few Genesis games I own physically, great classic I love it you say best I'm not arguing it's pretty high on the list
16:15 they missed the secret tunnel in the shit roof!
Thunder Force 4 is one of my favorite shooters, probably one of the best ever made, except for some reason in the US it was called Lightening Force (yes that is the actual spelling they used) 🤣
The 'e' stands for EXTRA!!!!!!
Shinobi 3 has a lot of sentimental value to me, glad you covered it.
It's between this, Contra: Hard Corps, and Streets of Rage 2 for best Genesis games, in my opinion.
yea tyhose you mentioned i would add golden axe 1 and 2 and sonic the hedgehog i did like goldenaxe 3 as well or didnt mind it
Whattabout gunstar heroes
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is also great.
Love this game. One of my favorites on the Genesis for good reason. Glad to see other people discover it. Pro tip: When you get the shrunken powerup (POW) use the lightning shield so you can take up to five or so hits and not lose the POW. It makes killing things really easy and usually in one hit. Boss battles are a snap as well. Give it a try next time.
"Howard the Duck II, What's Quackinin!?" I'll show myself out. 🚶♂️
Another thing I just realized is that all these contraptions that the Coyote gets costs money. If he was really desperate for a meal, wouldn't he just buy a chicken or something?
I would say that this is probably my second favorite Genesis game, right after Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Shinobi 3 had one of the best parallax graphics. They outdid themselves with the sounds and visuals. Everything is on point and the whole ninja experience was enhanced. Joe Mushashi learned a ton of new moves, run, slash, block, jump off walls, drop kick (love that move) that you can execute flawlessly. I think this version surpassed the Revenge of Shinobi on every level. Only thing I can say, is that Revenge of Shinobi had cool city scenes that was missing on Shinobi 3. But it doesn't take a way from the game at all. Level designs are awesome. And of course you can debate which one had a better sound track. But this ninja game is one of the best ever, hands down. Let's not forget the last battle boss scene.
Well...we've come a long way havent we?.... we went from watching 2 guys play a game, to watching two guys not play a game and search on youtube for the final boss.... what a time to be alive.
7:20 Okay, that was unexpected and utterly terrifying.
Streets of Rage 3 and Shinobi 3 were my favorite games on Sega at the time, and yes, you can beat the falling level without jumping magic. I did it as a kid but it was controller-smashing hard :)
43:50 ...."The end boss ugh is, is pretty cool. Ummm he's just like a dude that you fight." Well said.
The more I watch these vids, the more I wonder how these guys ever beat games that were difficult.
As a kid I preferred a genesis game called Second Samurai. Such solid action/beat 'em up. Fun gameplay, great hit detection, time travel!
I finally found a game that I'm better at than Mike. Shinobi 3 is awesome!!!
Did you ever find Mario or Mega Man?
37:28 And THAT is why you put Special on C in Options before starting the game >_<
40:40 So, Road Runner is basically Ahab ? "Punished Runner" ?
SEGA DOES, WHAT NINTENDON'T!! play Ranger X
The Genesis was my favorite console of all time, but when that ad campaign came in, I bailed out. lol
@@-taz- are u saying that you became a Nintendo fan
I was already an NES fan, but the Genesis was my favorite console.
@Too CasualDX Ranger X came with my Genesis along with Sonic 1, Walmart had a fit back then because it came with 2 games instead of 1 lol
Shinobi 3 was the moment in video game history where they got the Ninja styled video game correctly. Deploy able items, better levels, mind tricks before you can advance that aren't centred upon constant death pits or glitches, a cool design for Joe Musashi, amazing graphics and music to its time, a really solid action experience that I think is a must for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive owners or collectors or players.
Have you played The Messenger? I think that's my favourite ever ninja game. It's so inventive. I never played any of the Shinobi games back in the day though so I have no nostalgia for them, but they are still great games. Back then though my absolute favourite ninja game was Strider. It was so hard and I never beat it, but I kept playing it constantly
Shining Force is a head above all else on the Genesis trust me
Shinobi 3 brings back the memories from the past
The 3DS version of Shinobi 3 is godly. All those parallax layers in full color 3D is a thing to behold.
This game is a stone cold classic and one of the best on the Genesis
Top 10 genesis:
- Gunstar Heroes
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Phantasy Star IV
- Castle of Illusion
- Musha
- Streets of rage 2
- Dynamite Headdy
- Landstalker
- Contra Hard Corps
- Castlevania: Bloodlines
Lightening Force IV should be here too. Most of you slept on it.
Agree. Somewhat between thunder force iv and musha. Also needed to add shinobi 3. So top 12
There's 3 games I love on the NES that you guys have yet to mention, (as far as I know) after all these years. Rad Gravity, Gyruss, and Pinball Quest. They're such great hidden gems.
My mom got this for me for Easter when it came out. Will always hold a special place in my retro heart. Whirlind stage theme is everything. 😎
Shinobi X for Sega Saturn is actually my favorite Shinobi game. It's so much fun and has some hysterical Japanese live action cinematic cut-scenes
Shinobi 3!
One of the greatest Genesis games!
One of the greatest ninja games!
One of the greatest games period!
Shadowdancer was my jam...it smashes all of the other Shinobi games. Best music and gameplay by miles.
This is frustrating to watch for me when you're playing shinobi 3 like this.
Can confirm!
Fighting the Hydra as a kid really both impressed me and creeped me out
That surfing level is my favorite level in the game. Love everything about it. The design, the surfing, the epic theme and the boss fight.
You know you have 3 other powers, right ?
Ugh... and they barely use the downward kick, except by accident. And Shinobi 3 canes with an unusually well illustrated instruction manual showing all the combat moves.
@@happyspaceinvader508 these guys don't read instruction manuals that's why they suck at video games, TRUTH!
Ikazushi is so useful, too.
When you do the sprint attack, the ninja dodges and then attacks. Like Cammy doing that spinning backfist.
Shinobi 3 is the top 3 genesis game, Ranger X is the most underrated game.
That game is soooo difficult
Gunstar Heroes, Phantasy Star 4, Landstalker, Rocket Knight Adventures. Sonic 2 and 3 with Sonic & Knuckles was really good too.
I prefer revenge of shinobi, mostly because of the amazing music by yuzo koshiro.
Except for the last level music, of course.
All 3 soundtracks are great so I honestly can't pick just 1.
@@rtoffelix err, yeah you're right about that one it was a bit of a repetitive durge, yuzo dropped the ball, a bit like his 'experimental' soundtrack for streets of rage 3
@@stephenhall2980 My thoughts exactly.
If you forget the door sequence for that stage, the music becomes highly irritating.
As for SoR 3, only 2 tracks have kinda grown on me recently since '94. That soundtrack doesn't get discussed round here. 🤣
@@rtoffelix I know, the sor3 music is really not appealing, especially compared to sor2. I think he took the hardcore techno style of 'expander' from sor2 (which is an awesome tune) and pushed it too far. Here's hoping that streets of rage 4 is a return to form.
if you time jump near wall correctly, you can climb up to reach places. I did that on level "traps" to reach the doors.
Shinobi 3 is so good, but the best Genesis game hands down has to be Gunstar Heroes. Such an underrated gem.
The conversation from 11:05 to about 12:04 needs to be turned into one of those animated remixes people did for Cinemassacre for a while! That was excellent!
What was the game Mike was talking about where you fight Utroms in their bodies?
Hopefully Top Gun 2 follows the same plot as "Hot Shots part Deux" just with a more serious tone lol
@@DarkWestern Imagine still being a jaded asshole in 2019.
"War! It's fantastic!"
@@DarkWestern Way off on my age buddy.
This would be brilliant
Are we gatekeeping age now? Classy.
So many memories of playing this when I was a kid. I had Sega Channel. This was one of my go to games.
