If those standardized tests need prep and study, they are not a good way to test someone knowledge. A test should never be over tricks and surprises or speed. This gives the wrong message about education, which should be about reasoning and accuracy .
This test isn't designed to test knowledge or IQ. It's designed to weed out college applicants since it requires high attention to detail along with a complete understanding of basic concepts
Agreed. However, that is something we as students need to see in ourselves, that we are more than a standardized test. And since it is standardized, that is why you learn and master the tricks to get a good score.
i think they are great tests but should be timed. someone’s abilities should not be judged on how fast they are

yes! as a student studying for the ACT I couldn’t agree more
as an honors student with over a 4.0 gpa, the ACT does not always reflect YOU as a student. I am in top 5 people of my class and only got a 23. please do not fret if you are doing your best and still not receiving great results
Look, I understand that the test doesn’t represent everyone perfectly but let’s be honest for a second: if you only got a 23 and you’re top of your class than either your school has terrible academics or you’re one of those super extra students who just asks a bunch of questions and strokes the teacher’s ego. Maybe if you got like a 29 that’d be understandable but a 23 for top of the class? Something has to be wrong with your school.
@@charlesmann4553 orrr there's the obvious issue of standardized tests reflecting an entirely different style of testing and not actually reflecting a damn thing about your intelligence/academic potential. If they did, you wouldn't have to study for them. They only test school subjects, after all. The fact that you need specific strategies for them says enough about what bs they are.
I'm tied for 2nd in my class and got a 31, the person I'm tied with got a 24. We're both equally successful in every class and often work together, and have pretty much the exact same intellect. So yeah, it clearly isn't a perfect test and doesn't work for everyone.

Why do I do bad in the science section of the ACT when i love science and am good at it in school? Is this a common issue?
Because it's more about the problem solving than the science.
they don't give you enough time
and the questions aren't straight foward
honestly I view science as a sort of reading comprehension
It just tests your ability to understand experiments and draw reasonable conclusions.
It tests your patience in my opinion
I wouldn't want to overstep your position as a tutor, but the problem you went over was just a matter of skimming over the content. I think it takes more time to write everything down.
Ik this comment was 2 years ago, but skimming over the science is actually very effective.

@@Spritualkay.lovess I would first read through the questions, get the general idea of what is being asked, and then skim through the paragraphs. I personally find that more efficient.

@Madison DeCou the people she tuturs usually already have at least as 29. She can't tutor your average Joe test taker to a 36.
It’s annotating which is a skill they try to teach you in English. It’s basically summarizing passages and the text as you read so you don’t have to reread the whole thing. She drew a butterfly since it’s easier than writing it out or reading that passage.

+kingKezz i did okay. i made 27 in English, 26 in reading , 27 in science, and 20 in math... not satisfied with math score since it brought my average down so I'm taking it again in April lol

since the questions within each passage get more difficult would you recommend going from passage to passage doing easy questions first, or focus on each section at a time ?

I have mine in less than a week. On every practice test I take, I score pretty high in everything but science. I actually am currently freaking out because I picture myself getting a 29-35 in everything but science. I see myself getting a 20 in science so I'm not exactly thrilled.

@@saketnaik1 for me personally, i took the test three times and my best score was a 25 overall. i ended up taking two gap years after high school and this fall i am starting my fist year of college at age 20. not everything has gone perfectly to plan but i would not have it any other way, looking back.
It's a very different experience for International candidates on the computer. Could you help us out with that?
The only problem I have is that I only have one chance to do my ACT's and I'm literally bound to screw up because when I do the practice tests my grades aren't really the best. Plus its in like two days so yeah.

The crazy thing is, science is my worst subject after math, but I got a better act score in science than english, according to the website. I think it was because I had seen this video the morning of the ACT. weirD. I would still like to advance my chances, though, since I know I can do better than a 18 composite score.
Somehow the Student 1/2/3/4 is the easiest for me. I just underline the things that seem similar or opposite in the paragraphs.

i've started studying for the test two months ago. so far my highest scores have been a 33 on the english, 34 on reading, and for the science and math portion i haven't taken practice tests yet. but i've looked at a lot of the science questions in my book AND THEY'RE SO HARD. I DON'T GET IT. HELP
I have always found the science section to be kind of a joke. It is almost entirely reading comprehension of paragraphs and graphs. Almost 0 science knowledge is required. I also think it is by far the easiest section of the test.
it’s always actually been the hardest for me other than math, my mind always zoned out while reading those confusing excerpts and i forget everything i just read and get unmotivated when i don’t understand it which starts a pretty bad positive feedback loop lol
What about the "which mineral is blah" part? That's what I'm most nervous about, but if it's all in passages I'll be less worried.
The ACT exam here in Egypt is computerized how am I supposed to underline ????

What are some tips for comprehending and organizing information from passages more effectively when the test is computerized and there are no tools such as pencils to use to my advantage??
That's tough. I recommend retaking on a national test date at a center with paper testing. Every student is eligible to take the ACT on paper but if your school requires you take it on a computer that may mean a second take. As far as I know the "online" ACT is only being offered at a handful of schools as a school wide testing date option. But you can take notes as you read writing down each detail on your paper that is a number / value / vocabulary word to try to keep track of them in the meantime.
Thank you for the quick response and the advice, I'll try it! My test is in a month and required by my state in order to graduate high school, and the online ACT is the only option currently offered by my school. Science is the one section I am having significant problems with when taking online practice tests due to the bulk of the information given for questions and the difficulty of organizing and remembering it without being able to write directly on the test.

I don’t think symbolizing information is a good idea especially when you have 35 mins.... try making a video while doing a whole science section and drawing all under 35 mins

@@lefthanded5473 My point was just that success on the ACT may just more rely on your personality than your actual ability to take the test since if you ability determined it, then the test would go at a slower pace.
