- The ACT Math exam has some really tricky, weird, and challenging problems. From finding square roots of negative numbers, to finding the probability of guessing every question on an exam correctly (yes, I've seen both), the test throws everything and anything at you.
This video aims to provide insight on a variety of ESSENTIAL ACT Math skills, in the form of the hardest problems you could see that actually test those skills.
If you can get at least a few of these right, know that you're on the right track to improving your math score. Now, you just need to keep practicing with the exams linked below, and work on reviewing mistakes. Good luck!!!

🌟 I certainly couldn't answer these problems when I started prepping.
If you're in that situation, follow these 3 steps that helped me +10 my math score (35):
1. Try to get to 8-12 full math tests under your belt ASAP. We have 6 free tests linked here: the5academy.com/free
2. After each exam, look over your mistakes and try to learn from them
3. Notice patterns in what skills you struggle with, and repeatedly review/drill the problems you got wrong testing those skills on your past exams testing.
That's a lot of work, but no one said it would be easy.
If you're on a super short time frame and need accelerated help, consider joining one of our section mastery courses, or getting some last-minute tutoring and help from me. the5academy.com/courses
Hope this helps. Good luck!
Hi! For the first one, I would just do 64 (wearing both of the colors), minus 45 (students all together), which is 19. I know that you could do different things (because there’s quite a few things you can do, as you said), but I feel like your way is breaking it down when it’s already stable. If that makes sense… like, since there’s a time limit with BOTH the ACT and the SAT, making videos of the QUICKEST way to do each and every single question, is better and more efficient than THIS way. Not to be rude! I’m actually quite sad that the optional essay is no longer a thing… because, I’ve always been an exceptional writer! I’m 24, can’t drive because of a car accident from my coworker driving us three to a kids birthday party, dressed as princesses (the longest sentence…), and I REALLY want to go to MSU… I really want to do the ACT though, since I have to, according to MSU, and I have the most extensive book about the ACT… The hardest thing to do in my eyes, is reading it on my own time… anyways, have a great day. 😂🫣
The card question is so frustrating. I got many of these question and lost out on points because i was too busy studying rather then playing with a deck of cards
9:12 There’s no way this could be on an ACT. They can’t expect everyone to know how many cards are in a deck.
Either way the rest of the questions were helpful.
hey i was taking a practice test and I personally didn't know how many cards were in a deck. usually they will have note or something to lyk
@@ummulwarazarashaikh9881 That's fair. I think I remember one or two questions with some sort of extra reference. How well did you do on your practice exams?
It's always 52 cards in a deck! Jus something you've gotta know prior to. I learned about it in pre-cal
They could, but they would probably just tell you the number of cards in a deck on the side
I'm retaking the act in precisely 1 hhour 49 minutes. Wish me luck.
howd you do
@@skylarsteen6065 got a 25
45 minutes. They just told me I'm taking the test yesterday night. If I fail I have to retake a while credit ..... I'm failing
@@brooketaylor808 oh my, good luck!
@@emmabennett7699you should legit help me study for it I have it later this month I’m trying to at least get an 20 last time I got a 15 😭
You just made the ACT math look a lot easier. This is really helpful. Thanks a lot 🌹
For the complex numbers question, rationalising the denominator, as is usually done with surds would be a much faster method. i can be expressed as a surd in the form sqrt(-1).
As such, simply multiply both sides of the expression by (i+2) to get rid of the complex denominator. Using difference of squares, you'd be left with (1+3i)(i+2)/(-5), expand and simplify to get option B.
I find it hard to believe the first one was on an actual test. It was not worded specifically enough
Me neither
@@5Academy you lie about your videos dont you
ive seen something with the exact same wording multiple times on act's lol.
@@andrewmontoya8511 ong he does
@@lfckaran u get me dawg
this is really helpful!! next time try and go more in depth because you occasionally go really fast, thanks!!
Sure thing!
e to the power idk. damn
in the arithmetic sequence question u said that they can either ask that with arithmetic or geometric so what would the answer be if the question is geometric?
What are conversions that we should know for the act? Like miles to km...
I don't exactly have a list. Just memorize them as you see them on ptests!
19:05 wouldn’t leap years throw off the day of the week over such a long period of time?
For that arithmetic sequence question, if the number of terms is even, is the difference between mean and median 1? The median would be a .5 and it just rounds up right?
Good point! But we aren't told we need to round
@@5Academy Ah ok, thank you
The 2nd problem was easy , but the 1st one was pretty hard . I can't understand why did we get that answer.
So I’m supposed to know a card deck?
Edit: just took it and no i do not
What score you get bro?
@@ChocolateMilk19 I think I got high 20s. I don’t really remember with my peanut brain lol
what’s the answer to #9!!!
Arithmetic sequence problem with 2401 terms: If mean = median, isn't the difference 0?
Is the answer for question 15 literally just "Way too high" even though we found an answer and its written as an answer choice ?
Lmao I wanna say 240 but no one can make a 240 on a test
In the last question why you chose E ??
i can solve q2 by the calculator in the exam
Isnt that suppose to be -(i-2) ?when u reverse it
tyy this was really helpful
i definitely give up on the act 🙂 taking it next saturday
yeah i’m taking it tomorrow
@@iam.7509 i was kind of stress free this week but now since it’s the night before i’m getting kind of nervous
@@xoxora_ same
Hahaha felt that im also the night before. At least I’ll get good sleeo watching this.
@@XdgamehackerXd taking it tmr too
Can you please do a vidoe on cubic stuff
2:40 Don't do this. Just plug it into a calculator
This was so helpful
thank you
What is the answer for question 9

Ik I’m late
@@ajthevibefrLOL two years late 😭
@@BigJoLaw 🤣🤣
wait so is the last question d or e?
I was doing ok at the start but I started to really fail towards the end and not understand anything
I Got a 15 and I am in 8th grade, is that ok for my grade? I think its not 😕
no the average is 21. a good score is like 24-30. 30-36 most colleges accept you. But its ok because most of the stuff on the act you dont learn till your end of your 11th grade year. but you can still start now to learn different things. good luck bro
@@phoenix-king779 Thx!
@@phoenix-king779 it was just for practice, the first time i ever took it so ya
@@c.a.v2000yo if it’s like a sponsored act test is it a practice test or is it put in the record
I take mine in two hours
thx
Why i can't understand this equation!!! no3 🤔😪
I feel like if you did Modifying averages more simpler like just plugging in the percentages and seeing that neither of them would bring the average up to 90 percent and it would be too high for us to know would be less confusing , I didn’t understand the way you did it cause then in the test I would feel like double guessing myself and might pick the wrong answer cause of me spending my time double guessing myself.
3:17 how did you just come up with 5^4 automatically?
LMFAOO that’s what I said??
Bc 5^4 is 625 he just already knew what the smallest exponent was
he's trying to turn 625 into a base value of 5 with an exponent so that he can simplify, he also knows 5^4 = 625 lol
Yo is 27 for a freshman in hs on track for a 34+ later?
yes
You're killing it!
@@5Academy Thanks! With your help of course!
no, you will fail
More towards the ending nothing of what you said made any sense to me... you gotta show more of your thinking you can't just give the answer expecting us to understand how you got it.. but for someone who has an easier time understanding, this video would be more helpful for them.
Thanks for the feedback Michaela!
3:40
Thanks! Love it!
Can you explain number 3. I don’t get the whole cubing thing
the 3 miles are already cubed, so you need to convert the 1.6km into its cubed value which is something around 4, then you can just multiply them and get something around 12.
How do you get the 13 on the first question?
45 people total, 32 wearing red, 32 wearing blue, 45 - 32 = 13 people who are not wearing red, do the same for blue and subtract both the diffrences from 45, so 45 - 13 - 13 = 19.
You never answered 9.

How are these difficult?in what world do we live in? These are low level problems in any book we studied in the early 90’s in 9th grade
covid fkd a lot of shit up and these are difficult under a very unforgiving time limit
Taking the test in like 5 mins🫡
thankou 🙏🏼❤️
It's very simple to sold the first math problem
X+(32-x)+(32-x)=45
X=19
Duh easy
can you take my act for me?😭
probably not
these questions' structure make no sense it's impossible they are from any official act prep
they are real..in fact i saw them repeat in my own real act!! I wish I couldve done these before the act
He didn't put the entire question
you never solved the arthimetic problem
i still can't get the last question why it's not D ! Q.16
I agree
wait is it D or E.... ????? im getting D ahah
He did the last problem wrong.
It was a joke the answer is D
maybe yoy explain ur work better cause i hate how you skip around. just show the whole work so we can see how you did it
ok!
i’m cooked
Thats the worst explanation of act math ever
