Guild Wars 2 Open World Reaper Build Comparison

- A casual comparison of two different open world condi reaper builds.
The first build is the one I've shared previously on this channel, linked here:
• Guild Wars 2 Reaper Bu...
The second is one of Lord Hizen's, which can be found in his video linked here:
• Guild Wars 2: Best Ope...
This is just me sharing a fun experiment I did and hopefully making the case for why I'm still recommending my build for general open world play even after Hizen's release of his build video.
Feel free to test these builds against each other for yourselves. I think that's part of the fun of sharing builds; that we get to compare them to one another and find the build that matches our personal goals for the game best.
Sorry for rambling!
I agree, most of Hizen's builds are amazing at what they do, however i did come across your build a few days ago and it just feels more fun. You're right, the trait lines he chose work better with harbinger and scourge, which I do happily use because the harbinger build he made is dead simple and makes sense that way.
Thanks for posting the video. Definitely a fair and balanced comparison to Hizen's Reaper build. -- While you have provided a really good build for the comparison, I'm going to have to go with Hizen's build solely because it works best for my play style. -- I do appreciate comparison build videos like this one, they provide a lot of good information. And I hope you are able to present more of them. 👍
Hello, thank you very much for the video and all the info you provided, they are really helpfull and helped me to understand more the class and improved my gameplay.
I've tried both and I felt more confortable with your's build, it's a personnal thing and players will feel wich one it's better for their gameplay.
In the end, I've made some changes to the build and I am having a great time in the game.
I am not a skilled player, but I am soloing stuff like hard champions and it feels great for me (the feeling that makes you think like this: OMG, I did it !!!).
I am playing Curses 3-3-3, Spite 3-2-1, Reaper 2-1-2, Vipers armor and weapons (pistol/torch, Staff), celestial trinkets, Relic of the Reaper, nightmare runes (the dungeon one).
I don't remember wich sigils I have, but I buy only cheaper things.
My armors, weapons and rings are exotics. The only ascended I have are backpack, acessories and amulet.
My utilities, in most of time, are Rise, You are All Weaklings and Spectral Grasp, but I changes them depending of the boss I am soloing.
The surviveability comes from the passive healing that comes from curses and reaper traits.
I changed the healing skill for the signet one for more passive healing.
We don't heal while we are in shourd, so I don't stay there very much.
In boss fights, I usually start with torch skills, then utilities, change to staff, use all skills in order (2, 3, 4, 5), elite, shroud, 3, 5, 4, 3, 2, exit shourd, repeat.
Most of the time my life doesn't goes below 75%, so the healing skill it's not used that much, but signet helps with the passive healing.
Since it's cheap, my food it's Koi Cake and I buy one condi dmg utility from the WvW gismo (they usually are a level 75 version of the utility, but they are very cheap).
I am slowly changing from celestial to vipers, the next step are rings. I am doing this way to get used to the changes in the dmg we take from monsters.
When I get full vipers, I will change the Spite last trait from 1 to 2, to more damage. In this build, more damage = more passive heal.
My advice to new players is: first pick a build, try to understand it, play it, adapt for your playstyle, have fun !!!
One thing I wonder, as a fairly new player, is how these builds perform when you are on an even more limited budget: basically no food, as the cakes, according to the wiki, need a 9 year old character, and I have no legendaries, so I basically need to default to exotic gear for the most part (ascended still requires me quite some work to get my hands on and it is taxing on my gold and mats income).
Another thing: are there options that allow a standard, full berserker gear power reaper to sustain well enough to solo champions? Going through the various story quests I found myself often enough in maps that did not have consistently enough people to ensure help when dealing with some of the non meta events.
@Mandala30 Great video
The scepter gotta be my least favorite necromancer weapon, and it's not even close. Praise be to the Weapon Mastery that I can now use pistol in its place on all condi builds. The staff, I think, has some mixed opinions, but necromancer is my main in PvP & WvW where the staff is a mainstay, and I got conditioned/stockholm syndromed into kind of liking it. Now I use staff on swap everywhere, power, condi, and heal.
i saw Hizens video and found it very funny that hes using almost the same build im using for a year now, its also my WvW build im just using other runes and sigils, relic etc, that means that my build im using is kind of a hybrid its WvW and PvE, not full cele , My trinkets are the only ones that using celestial, Armor is Marauder , sometimes i switch to berserker etc... ive used it to solo Labyrintian Horror when i had full cele, missing damage so , i am currently testing a build with perma might
Been loving to play as a reaper on one of my alts and ive always used staff and GS because i just thought they were more fun. But i run a full berserker build and was wondering if celestial would be any better...
I have to say, I’ve really enjoyed your build since I started the game about a month ago.
I’ve tried a few others, but yours is super consistent on delivering fun. I solo’d the story steps that took me into Tower of Nightmares and Battle for Lion’s Arch with no problem, and I’ve solod some legendary foes in open world.
I just made it to HoT a few days ago, playing the story / seasons in order (which finally got me the last 10 hero points to unlock Chilled to the Bone, and Omg it’s so good).
I’ve found I really like Suffer, and once I had Chilled to the Bone it got me thinking.
Between Staff, Suffer, Shroud, and Chilled to the bone… does the build need Relic of the Reaper?
I’m not saying I think it’s a bad relic. I’m just… not at all sure we need extra sources of chill. I’m really wondering if you couldn’t add a relic that either improved sustain (aren’t there some that remove condis or otherwise help you when you shout?) or give buffs or otherwise push damage? There have been some encounters that make me feel suddenly fragile (certain Bandit Champions, anything that spams like 20+ confusion stacks, etc)
I think Relic of the Thief’s effect applies to the build, or maybe one of the condition damage relics?
Again, I totally understand why Relic of the Reaper makes sense. I’m just wondering if, with your much deeper understanding of the game, you might consider if it’s actually needed or if perhaps that’s a slot that could bring a little more to the build?
Do you think replacing Greatsword with Dagger/Focus would make this build more consistent on single target Champions? Since Dagger gives nice healing (skills 3 > 2) and Focus with a good life force generation (that maybe this is the weakness of the build you shown)?
When in shroud is it not better to do shroud 4 immediately, coz I notice that when you enter shroud again shroud 4 is halfway on CD and it's the heavy hitting skill on reaper
We have to combo shroud 4 with the ice field from shroud 5, and to do this we have to wait out whatever other combo fields we placed from our other skills because those fields will take priority as long as they persist. So if i put down a bunch of wells then try to do my shroud 5 into shroud 4 combo, I'll end up comboing the dark fields from the wells instead and severely undercut my dmg output, bc the chilling bolts are a huge part of my dmg in shroud. So I throw in some other skills on the front end of the shroud rotation to bide time for those other fields to go away so I can perform the combo correctly.
No swords? They are fun
This video is older than swords on necro. Necro swords did not exist in January of 2024 in the live game.
@mandala3042 oh ok just got back in the game few weeks ago
