I've been in the Martial Arts for 54 years and have had the opportunity to train with Dan Inosanto (who you see fighting Bruce Lee in Game of Death clip) Guro Inosanto (Bruce Lee's top student) told stories of Bruce Lee at a dinner. One was how at the dinner table Bruce Lee would have a sand bucket and pound it with his fist or curl a dumbbell or squeeze a hand grip while eating with his other hand. He never stopped working out. I thought Guro Inosanto was one of the fastest Martial Artist I had ever seen (Guro Inosanto had run a 9.3 100 yard dash in college and was already an established Black Belt under Legendary Sensei Ed Parker). Guro Dan had said he didn't ever remember scoring on Bruce Lee when they sparred. I thought if Guro Inosanto is as fast as I think how fast was Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee was the real deal, his Movie Martial Arts was for movies, his true Martial Arts (Jun Fan or Jeet Kune Do) was different and designed for the street.

In 2004, UFC President Dana White called Lee the "father of mixed martial arts," stating: "If you look at the way Bruce Lee trained, the way he fought, and many of the things he wrote, he said the perfect style was no style. You take a little something from everything. It's been over 50 years, and people are still talking about him. That about says it all.

I've seen a lot of bruce Lee videos and documentarys and was a fan of his back in the day.
This video was mostly fluff. There are many feats that weren't even mentioned in this video.
Joe Lewis was a heavy weight fighter who used to train with Bruce. He said Bruce hit harder than any heavyweight fighter that he ever fought. He could literally push or kick between frames of those old film cameras. There are some frame by frame slow motion video where you don't see Bruce move but you see the opponent go flying from his punch or kick.
There is a lot out there on Bruce Lee if you want to look for it. He was incredible.
A good place to start is a youtuber called Beerdy. He has a ton of historical video of Bruce, documentarys on Bruce, and interviews of people who knew and worked out with Bruce.

You can see how fast he was in Way of the Dragon 1972. When fighting Chuck he accidentally breaks his arm for real. You can see when it happens but you have to use slow motion as the first incident has two parts, 1) Bruce grabs and twists chucks wrist. Without slow mo it just looks like a block. 2) the arm twist surprises both and it puts chuck out of position for Bruce’s next move which breaks the arm. Chuck being chuck was supposed to act like it was broke so he didn’t at first mention it was actually broke and kept filming.

Another person that has told some of the amazing things that Bruce Lee did is Chong Li. He was a stunt man and in a few of Bruce's movies. He was the Chinese weightlifting champion and he remembers picking up another stuntman and putting him over his head and he mistakenly said "Can you do that!" And Bruce waover and picked up Chong who was probably twice the weight of the person that he had picked up and Bruce did not even make a single sound and acted as if he had just picked up a small piece of wood. Chong never questioned Bruce again during the filming that they were doing. He said that he has never seen anyone as strong as Bruce was. Even in his weightlifting days.

"Pumping Iron" the movie (1977 documentary) features the sport of body building, with eventually a focus on Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno and their competition for the professional Mr. Olympia title (which Arnold had already won 5 times). Lou Ferrigno would also parlay his successful body sculpting career into an acting career as "The Incredible Hulk" for 5 tv seasons in the late 1970's, and Arnold, of course, became the international movie star. In real life, they were getting ready to film the scene, and a gang of dudes showed up to challenge Bruce to a fight, which was common. He kicked their asses, a gang of like 10 guys, and the director filmed the fight because it was so badass. After dispatching the gang, he ripped the film from the camera, because he didn't want to glorify the fight. So, the director rewrote the scene to match the fight as.close as possible.

Thankfully, Bruce Lee was able to actually sneak in a few movies at the very last 1.5 year of his life. Prior to that...there are ZERO movies, he was simply a veteran at live combat. In live situations he had fought; Black Belts, Pro Fighters, Ex military, Champions, 3rd degree Masters, Rival Martial Artists, and opponents that outweighed him by 100 pounds. His battle experience started in his teenhood as the leader of the Hong Kong gang known as the Tigers of Junction Street and the violence had lead all the way to adulthood. The few movies he DID get to make were only at the last 1.5 years of his life which was a brief opportunity for him to report his life experiences and share his insights into live combat. He only made 3 little movies plus One Hollywood film, a very short attempt at films but we're lucky he at least got to quickly make them right before he died to show us his insights on his life of hard combat.
Sports Illustrated has ranked BRUCE LEE in "The Top 50 Greatest Athletes of All Time", as he was able to raise unbelievable weights that pro weight lifters could not. "Enter the Dragon" was to be his film debut to the world but as he died before it's release he sadly never got to actually start an acting career, but the legacy he left was the life he lead and it took only one movie to get the world's attention for them to backtrack and see who this Man was and research the facts of his stunning life and super human abilities.

If you watch him punch a bag 10:05, using power, he doesn't look unusually fast compared to boxers. Because that requires whole body movement.
The one inch punch requires them to stand feet together, otherwise they won't fly back. In the clip here it isn't even 1 inch away. He threw it from his waist. That's a full power, regular punch. 18:53
Yes he is very fast. But that's just a parlor trick which requires you to strike while planted. Not practical in a real fight. I used to do quick little roundhouses to impress my friends. But they had no power. I also did one hand push ups. I was super skinny.
I used to be a big lee fan. He had master offensive technique, but never showed his defense, and he was small. As a skinny twitchy boy myself, people also told me I was strong for my size. But that's the thing. Small is still small. I care more about lifting and getting big now.

The slapping incident could easily have happened. If you watch Bruce fight, he often blocked attacks with an open hand allowing him to guide the direction of the blow, or turn it into a grab. Even in MMA, open hand techniques (I guess they could be considered "slaps") are common to turn, or reposition your opponent to optimize your next attack.

I don't know why people make up myths and legends, it's simple, he drove his body to extremes, that which shines twice a bright lasts half as long...
I suspect the human body is capable of a lot they're saying he did. But at what price to the body?

He created a philosophy... the fact that Jeet Kune Do became a "set" style would have him spinning in his grave.
He prefered training/teaching people in small groups or one on one.
Because he knew that every person is different, and will be able to do different things(Well) based on their body types.
So he prefered to taylor the training based on the person.
He was SO FAST that when he was on the set of "Green Hornet", they asked him to slow down and exaggerate his movements... because they couldn't capture it on film. It was just a blur, as shown in the video.
He also played against pro pingpong players using nunchucks... and there is film on that.

We didn't have Cell phones, but we had magazines, books, newspapers, and documentaries and you learned from his contemporaries what Bruce could actually do. Like all legends of course there is hype but there is no doubt that Sigung was far more than exceptional.

Bruce Lee started in Wing Chun training with Ip Man, while there are weapons nunchucks are not one of them as were many of the weapons he learned to use. I too loved his spiritual side " If you tie 2 birds together though they have 4 wings they cannot fly" comes to mind, he also wrote the movie " circle of Iron" check out that movie to really get a feel for his philosophy.

Interesting. I think the quote about tying two birds together is from Rumi. When the actor James Coburn was filming in Morocco he was receiving both martial arts training from Lee and Sufi teaching from Ikbal Ali Shah, maybe that's where he heard it.

I was working on an office in Montreal and one person mentioned he brought his son to train Martial Arts with one of 3 students that trained with Bruce Lee. So obviously I went. The class was for young kids but at one point the student, of certain mature age, did the 4 punches in one second that Bruce does in the movie Enter the Dragon, when the scared guy comes to Bruce's room and tells him to wear the uniform for the next day. The guy leaves and Bruce does 4 or 5 punches in one second.

As a Bruce fan from those days, I can tell you it would "seem" he certainly was superhuman, but some of this was embellished. The 9 punches and 6 kicks in 1 second is clearly humanly impossible. But 99% of everything else in this video is pretty much common knowledge for those of us Bruce fans from back then. How devastated and baffled I was when he passed. At 64, I am SO GLAD his memory and legacy is still that of the "Superhuman martial artist".

  • @Plague_Doc22
    @Plague_Doc22 Місяць тому +1

As a life long martial artist. The six kicks in 1 second is just not possible. I could see 4 if you count fairly poor powered kicks where instead of switch kicks you throw them.
9 punches seems more reasonable to me, depending on the distance thrown. The 1500 pushups I can honestly see him doing. He had freakish muscle endurance and the world record is north of 3000.

Best believe Bruce was fast. He was extreamly light and he was extreamly mind set. People forget at one stage he was paralyzed. Doctors told him, he will never walk again.. that was his most depressing moment. His wife Lynda had to help write his book and the drawings in that book. That book also had his power of the brain stronger. He came out of hospital being paralyzed and he was on his feet the second he felt feeling he was even faster. Most of that documentary especially with the last movie made before his died. It's after his back injury

The slap you speak of is when a writer held a focus mitt for Bruce in the office of Black Belt magazine, in 1967. The writer's shoulder did indeed get dislocated, after what Bruce called a light slap to the mitt. This event has been well documented by Mito Uyehara, the man who witnessed it. The coin feat is authentic as well, and has been fully documented in books and interviews by many who seen it themselves. The 8 punches in a second and rice caught with chopsticks is probably bullshit though. It was actually Chuck Norris, who has told many whoppers about Bruce himself, started the rice-chopstick, fabricated rumor and printed it in one of his books.

  • @HDsharp

Bruce became a legend because he made a name for himself in the martial arts world by challenging and beating all the best martial artists in his era behind closed doors. Hence alot if martial arts legends became his student. Bruce had to do that because he had no credentials, he had to show he was the real deal to convince People he was serious and not just an actor and to prove kung fu wasn't just for show. Thats how his legend grew. It wasn't just a rumour he was the deadliest man on the planet, the rumours was based on the fact he beat them all. Because why would any world champion receive lessons from just an actor otherwise.

This was an interesting video about Bruce Lee and as you pointed out seemed to focus on the myth side. There are other videos out there that give a more realistic perspective of his life including the philisophical side of Bruce Lee.
As for his films which where in order Big Boss, Way of the Dragon, Fist of Fury, Enter the Dragon and te film he was working on at the time of his Death Game of Death. There is very little of Bruce in the published movie but one particular scene was the pagoda which in it's entirety is arounf 20 minutes long. Again the full unedited scene is available on youtube. If you want a reccomendation as to which film to react to I would reccomend Way of the Dragon. The only reason being you get to witness more than the masrtial artist, he's also very funny throughout this film which is not explored in any of his other films. Just my opinion ofc.
And please please remember, apart from Enter the Dragon which was produced through an american studio his other films are dubbed for one, and not much of a storyline, your watching these primarly to witness the skills of Bruce as a mastial artist.

Good reaction as always as you guys are one of my favorite reactors. Few notes As you suspected there was some accuracy and embellishment but
Considering this was almost 50 years ago give or take we are getting further from the time of his day. One thing not mentioned was for his time he was doing things and saying things that were not only unheard of of but looked down on. Mixing martial arts in the day wasn’t even thought of as the Masters and styles were very possessive of their art, especially when you think of the history and countries he was mixing his material. Probably his biggest growth in knowledge and expertise probably was not an accident as at the time he was away from the conservative Chinese culture and now exposed to the melting pot environment of America and exposed himself to study philosophy in Seattle .
Now years Later with MMA being so popular, Dana white and many if not most credit him as being the father of MMA that is not by accident. He was truly skilled and his movies are still a standard for his fight scenes.
But his true gift to the Martial Arts community was his vision and his ability to inspire us to look inward with an open mind to
    Challenge ourselves to excellence ❤🙏

--------- while bruce was the film star, a bit of a prima-donna show off, he was good at it, however Ed Parker really was one that I thought was better with his art of Kenpo. He was very scientific, philosophical, and his hands could move like a lightening bolt. Ed tailored his art to his heavy gravity centered body weight.
Many didn't know when Bruce & Chuck Norris did the movie together, that it was CHUCK not bruce who was world champ at that time.
