  • Fall is a time where seeding and controlling winter weeds are a few of the many things we are beginning to think about doing for our cool season lawn. Which strategy is best for your lawn? Seeding and applying a pre-emergent are good things to do for your lawn but you can't do both. Here I discuss each strategy so you can decide which method would be the best for your lawn this fall.

I’m in down south Texas, in a new to me property that was severely neglected. Massive bare spots, massive weed patches, cut down like 12 trees, very slim amount of Bermuda patches but it’s there. I’m going to drop some pre emergent and fertilizer tomorrow. Try to push it and prevent what I can before it goes brown in late December early January, do a burn out treatment with round up. Then do another pre emergent fertilizer treatment around March and maybe seed this time next year. Going to give it a full year and see what keeping the grass cut low, fed and watered can really do. Otherwise I’m scalping and dropping sod in 12 months lol.

For cool season grasses, when do you need to apply a fall pre-emergent? Is it by or at a certain ground temperature or by a specific day or no later than...? Thanks...

I think you need to analyze what your weed problem is and develop your seeding strategy from there. For my lawn poa annua is the monster. I need to apply pre-emergent in the fall. I overseed in the spring and have done it successfully numerous times. I actually did a complete renovation in the spring w great results.
I apply seed at around 50+ with tenacity. The 1 time I seeded in the fall the next years poa invasion was pretty bad.

If you want to overseed and do weed control.. Tenacity! Its a post and pre emergent and allows you to overseed with out waiting months in between. It’s a game changer and application rates are easy to figure out. I also get my clients to over seed 4 times in a two year period and that usually produces a ton of new grass. I’ve also been using liquid aeration versus the core aeration You get 100% coverage with the liquid. Looking forward to fall IPA’s LCN!!

I agree 100% with using tenacity. I used it to seed my new lawn, just sprayed it down the day before, and seeded next day. I was super skeptical in it working..... Sure enough, 4 month's later, my lawn is nicer than my neighbors well established lawn.😁 ( side note..... I did baby my new lawn tho, and did everything I was supposed to all season long, gotta put the work and effort in to it, to have good results!)

As a lifelong Floridian I must ask about this 'cool season' that you speak of....sounds mythical to me.

Tupersan aka Siduron can be used just like Tenacity. The brand Johnathan Green uses it in some starter ferts.

Thanks for the info, very helpful. Per your advice for me to try and knock out my Poa this year, I'm going to go the route of your Dithiopyr Pre-Emergent product instead of aerating and over-seeding. My soil temps today are 85 degrees here in St Louis. My question is, since I have few thin spots from fungus this year, can I de-thatch those thin areas, put some seed down and wait a few more weeks before I put down the pre-emergent? Would I be hurt by this thinking?

I’ve tried the spring seeding several times with no luck. Seems like the grass just doesn’t development the toughness to make it through those hot summer days. Fall seeded last year and those areas are the best in my yard this year.

I put weed and feed on Aug 17. Then done the aeration and overseeding on Sep 12. I know I need to put fertilizer for the new seeds. Since I put the weed and feed about a month ago, I am thinking to wait until mid-October to put the fertilizer (two months gap between application). Will this be too late to put the fertilizer for the new seeds? Additionally, which fertilizers do you recommend? Thanks for your informative videos, and I am learning more from your videos.

Hey Allyn I’m not over seeding this fall (I don’t need it lawn is thick) so I’m gonna push it with fertilizer. So my question is can I push and still put down post emergent? Lawn is thick but I’ve got more weeds than I would like . Also,I’m in Michigan so my window is closing fast.
    Thanks, great info once again.

they define that on my product as "established turf" which is grown and has been mowed 2x

Isn’t it a chemical barrier not vapor barrier?

Maybe a vapor barrier created with chemicals. Kinda like a vapor barrier in construction done with poly film..... 🤔🤯🤓.

@@handcannon4545 yes that - the chem breaks down and leaves a vapor.
