I moved from Romeoville 14 years ago into my current home where I’ve struggled with my lawn over the past 5-6 years. The lawn here was brand new. However, I’ve had issues keeping it as beautiful as my lawn in Romeoville. Well, this video, I think, answered many possibilities as to why I’m struggling. Great information, Allyn! Thanks a heap for your help!!

Awesome video with lots of great advice! I am locked and loaded for a full lawn renovation coming up in about 2 weeks. Been binge watching you, Connor, Ryan, Pete, etc all summer to figure out the plan. I can already say with the few changes I have made throughout the summer months, my lawn is looking incredible! Thank you for all your valuable advice! In 2 weeks I am going to be doing some leveling of the existing lawn, aeration, overseed a mostly KBG blend(elite varieties), starter fert, humic acid, and tenacity applications. Going to be a busy few days as I have 1.6 acres to cover! For anyone on the fence about the benefits of humic acid / sea kelp blends: They ABSOLUTELY work! I have a lawn in Michigan that is primarily sand with zero shade (Literally no trees). The lawn has been sparse, pale yellow, and gets heat stressed every summer. Up until this year I have never added fertilizer, watered, or anything. This July I applied a humic acid product along with Tenacity for weed control and NOTHING ELSE to the lawn. I then went on vacation for 2 weeks while we experienced 85-95 degree weather. When I returned I was SHOCKED to see the lawn was a deep healthly green color and almost appeared to be filling in. Keep in mind I still have not fertilized the lawn at all! I am completely sold on the benefits of humic acid. For reference, the product I used is called Root Ruckus from GS Plant Foods (available on Amazon). I sprayed it at a rate of 3oz/1k sq ft. It absolutely works!

Nicely done. When looking to improve your soil, getting the proper micro biology into your land is the best thing you can possibly do to turn that dirt into soil. The micro nutrient products you mention toward the end are a good way to feed and maintain the diversity of the soil food web. Properly grown QUALITY compost, or actively aerated compost tea with added components (humic/fulvic/kelp/fish emulsion, etc) is still the best inoculant to introduce the proper micro biology into your “dirt” to make it SOIL. Once we have a soil with the right amount and diversity of microbiology, we can start letting the members of that food web do a lot of this lawncare for us and be provided with the proper structure, that will provide air and water to the root zone which in turn will create drought tolerance. Proper soil biology provides pest and disease resistance as well, eliminating the need for ‘cides... When we think biology first, we can stop thinking so much in terms of NPK’s and more about feeding those micro creatures to keep them working for us. Whether you topdress or level with sand or topsoil, know that the bacteria/fungi will make the enzymes to pull nutrients out of either of those materials as well as any parent material or organic matter in the soil. Good luck to all these cats leveling their lawns...and to those who live on old school lawns like me that like a bit more natural beauty and can live with a few dips and bumps, I salute you as well. There is no right and wrong in lawncare chicks and dudes....damn this was long, sorry Al. Have a good one.

Well said, I think the situation you are dealing with should specifically dictate what materials you use in your lawn. I did a “partial” burn down of my lawn, I.e I hit the nastiest of weeds and clumping tall fescue garbage with glyphosate, scalped, and reseeded. Mechanical aeration made things even more bumpy but I’m hoping that it breaks down over the next few weeks. No top dressing for the seed, I just threw’er down and hoping for the best :D

I like to use compost but you will get various weeds from compost too. When I use compost as a top covering for seed I also will use a Mesotrione to have pre emergent protection. For 4wks after that any weed that comes up can be very easily pulled while mowing- in my experience.

I'm a bit proud of myself after watching this. I have used the same explanation on leveling vs top dressing...even recently on the LCN group. In the older LCN group, there were a couple of guys in there that had lawns that motivated me to level mine. I took a year to read and second guess myself, but I finally got it done. Cool video that I hope will help encourage folks who want to level their lawns.

@@LawnsAcrossAmerica, not sure about cool season lawns so I'll bring this up in case you want to add a disclaimer.
It seems that warm season turfs (Bermuda in my case) have an optimum window that goes from May to late July because of the growth rate. So according to what I've read, for us warm season guys, it's too late. When would the optimum window be for cool season folks?

When I took a turf management class in the late 90's to take care of a little league baseball field, topdressing was the term the instructor used for the process of making the turf in the playing field flat. Think about how kids play baseball. The outfielders all stand in the same place. Thus those three spots in the outfield always needed addressing.

Allyn, you say that there are better ways to rehab the turf and soil than core aerating and topdressing with organics. Can you tell me what those are or lead me to the information? I'm in GA and have 60% established Bermuda and 40% Zeon Zoysia that I sodded this year. Parts of my yard we're too shaded to keep the Brenda strong so my lawn suffered from erosion pretty bad over the past 24 months. That has been remedied, but I need to repair the soil that had been eroded. I'm planning to aerate & topdress with organics this year and possibly level with a sand mix next year. What would you recommend?

I can't run drainage to the street because we don't have sewers and it will go into residents houses. That's a whole lot more then I can help you with here in comments. But for sure, the water has to go somewhere so if you build up the ball field, then you may want to consider where the water will go and make sure you are not creating another problem somewhere else.

Thanks for the reply. I'm a teacher and wrapping up my summer downtime. I'll plan on ordering topsoil for know to smooth out the deep spots. Perhaps, I'll fine tune it with sand next summer.

So I've had some pretty good success with overseeding and topdressing with compost the last few years but this year I'd like to tackle leveling. There's a tree in my front yard and unfortunately the roots have caused some major problem areas. There's one decent sized low spot that must be at least 3-4 inches lower than the surrounding lawn. I understand why sand it the better choice for leveling but surely 3 inches of sand will kill everything underneath of it, and can I expect to grow new grass seed in it? I feel like a mix of 50/50 soil/sand might be the right move? Maybe after a few years of doing that it'll be nice and level?

For severe dips you take off the top layer of soil, backfill it with fill dirt, and replace the top layer over that. Then level with sand and some soil over the next few years.

Sorry if this is a repeat question: what time of the year (spring, summer, fall) is it a good time to level your lawn? I live in West Tennessee. Thank you. Great informational video

you can do it whenever the lawn is actively growing, probably not best just before winter.

@@Thelawncarenut Thank you. Another question: is sand good to use of leveling in the south? I believe our soil is different and I watched your video and understand the benefits of sand but don't know if it works in the south.

But what of I have to aerate and level.. What do i do? Will the seeds grow from the sanded areas.. Do I then put top soil on top of the sanded parts that I need to level... This video just through me for a loop with the anti topsoil message.. I understand why sand is better to level.. But this fall I'm doing a rehab need to level aerate and seed.. What do I do with the sanded areas?

you don't have to correct every problem right now. Eat the elephant is small bites. Level it now, work on seeding and that next year.
