Yes. Starting with a 24-36 grit would’ve been much faster. Most times people don’t want to go straight for the coarse grit because the floors aren’t that bad. I work @ a Home Depot tool rental. Most people get the more coarse when the floors are horrible. These floors weren’t that bad. He did a great job starting out with the 60 grit.
@@THEOGMOCO idk about that. I would start out with 80 see how well that works then if needed go to 60. But I would never ever rip a 32 on it. I sand athletic floors though. Such a U of M, Michigan State, Central michigan and school floors all over michigan Indiana and north Carolina.
Informative video and answers questions verbally and visually. Watch other videos about drum sanders simply scared my whereas watching this one shows I can actually use one. The minor quib is that Sal should mention, to the uninitiated as most are, that pushing the lever down and not moving the sander can damage the floor.
@@FromTheHood2TheWoods yea I’ve heard that as well I used a 36 when this crazy person tried to paint my grandmother’s floor when we been sanding every 5years smh
I really hope you watch someone elses videos before you tried. I recommend 'How to sand a floor' youtube channel. He actual does good work. You know someone knows when they don't rent all their equipment.
The floor looks so nice just after sanding. Is it important to polish it or we can leave the floor like this after sanding n the color also lightens in this way so beautifully
Just once with 40 then wax it. 3 or 4 coats of a fiddes supreme wax. Buff and build this up until it's smooth, and your done. If you use a stain and varnish you have to sand it to 3 or 4 times to a 120 grade or something like that. Looks better and easier to wax it. The wax is tougher than varnish too.
I swear I have seen every sort of video on sanding with a drum sander and everyone does it differently. In one video the guy used the drum at an angle and then with the grain which sounds very complicated. Other videos are just someone chatting and chatting without actually showing them do it in action. Home Depot provides a video tutorial for the drum sander with the presenter engaging the drum on the floor bi-directionally (walking forward engaged and then walking backward with the drum engaged on the same pass). This video actually shows good action, but it's another different one just engaging the sander in one direction.
my 1st time using a random orbiter in my small hallway. I use 60,80 and 100 grits. Still doesn't look good when I applied water-based poly on it. I got this dark blotchy spot. drive me nuts.. I need to redo it again next weekend.
Always go left to right the drum has a cutting edge and it feathers out on the left side of the machine. Plus you never sand cross grain around the room .that's what the edger is for
This video was so helpful! I literally just got the Home Depot Floor Belt Sander. I’ve got 4 rooms to sand ( selling my house). 3 days Go, i rented Hm. Dpt’ 10x20 rectangular oscillating pad floor sand. I forget the proper name. I spent two days, running that sander for, I’m guessing, 7-10 hours each day. Hard white oak. My friend, who is a remarkable builder. I visited him for a quick run-down on the process, and pace. How hard can it be. So, two full days of sanding a 20 year Oak floor. It’s in really good shape, but there are scuff, gouges from moving heavy furniture, heavy traffic wear. It was laid so well! This is the floor’s first refinishing, and my fiirst time tasked doing it. The stain I put down onto the cleaned (mineral spirits), well sanded (60,80, 120 grit) floor, still had big areas of scratches and worn areas, sun damaged, too. It looked really great, but wasn’t a new, refinished floor. I have had the polyurethane ready to roll out but my floor wasn’t ready to seal yet. Just rented this belt sander that you used. Thank you fore sharing your knowledge and skills. This demo was the best! Sanding with this Belt Sander should make real progress.. The square rectangular pad sander takes too damn long. The floors that you renewed looked stunning. Nice work!
I also just sanded my white Oak room, it is about 40 years old and this was a LOT of work. It took me a full day (~10-12h) with 24-60-100 paper for a 10x5’ room. For the edges (the 2nd day) we used a hand belt sander (40-100 paper) instead of the edger. It worked fine.
Question I have dry paint on my food floors and I passed a few times with the Sander and the paint didn't fully remove..what kind I do to remove the paint
The guys who call them self professional kill me. Of course, if you've been doing something a long time, you have the eye for but an average . DIYer may be satisfied with there progress let them be. Everyone is not looking for perfection. They just want to make it look somewhat decent
To give you some perspective I bought 3 24 grit drum sanding belts for a 800 sqft area. Ended up using 2 though I probably could have used the one tbh.The third one was used on the edge (cut 2 pieces to size haha) Once the old material's removed everything else was smooth sailing so 1-2 of the next several grits
Informative video and very well done! Thanks for sharing! But doing it yourself every time would be time consuming! People would rather prefer to hire any flooring specialist than doing it themselves. And there are so many good floor refinishing and installation companies these days, one of them is Wayne Maher Hardwood Flooring!
i tap dance on 7 layer oak plywood. i have worn the middle. if sanded, would it be more even? do i coat it with anything or just flip it and sand the other side that has sticky closed cell foam on it. thanks
If your project isn’t pressed for time you can try spraying the spot with hydrogen peroxide and then laying a cloth over it. I’ve had a good luck with it lifting some of the stain out and typically do this after your first pass with the roughest grit sandpaper. If it’s bad enough you will simply have to replace the boards.
It would take a professional MAYBE 1 hour, I know a lot that could do it in less time. A home owner? Probably 5+ hours as the big machine and edger are not tools you just pick up and start using, it takes a long time to become efficient.
Here is the best tutorial, don't. If you want good floors it is better to hire someone like me who made nice floors their life. This guy might be good at other things but he is using that drum sander completely backwards. You do not use the machine walking forwards because it cuts when you pull it towards you so you walk backwards with it. The guy on the edger sander is edging backwards as well. Sorry man, but I wouldn't have gotten paid, or accurately I wouldn't have accepted money for leaving a floor looking like that. Please just hire someone who knows. For your customers sake.
And I did not even notice, you guys were not wearing hearing protection? Those sander are loud. If you did this professionally without ears you are going to be deaf by your 40s.
Tip use vacuum and hose , avoid lines with machine pass 50 if hard with edge but us 80 or 100 but only 2 times machine and edger bro 4 times hell Nah and vacuum everytime Nah just use what I said d up there
Sand seal is good, it’s fast.. two coats of polyurethane over it.. but just three coats of poly and no sand seal is fine too… I am having a hard time finding sand seal these days.. pretty annoying.
As much as I like to hire people, I can't hire someone like Sal Flores who does everything and claims he does a good job. There is a reason why we don't have carpenters doing brain surgery. You hire professionals who have been doing it for a long time and know what they are doing.
Amen ! but ppl more and more beliiiiiiiieve in DIY and joe blow services ... Than once they learnt the lesson tens of thousands later they call a pro and try to bargain it down as they used up all their money for trial and error ... its a bad joke
Wow...thank you very much. The before/after difference in how bright that floor is amazing. Im about to do a mid 1940s floor with birch hardwood.

Exactly. In my experience on commercial and residential.. 80 isnt going to wipe 32 out. We usually do 36, 60, 100 in houses
Excellent video - both your narration and the on-screen text👌👌👌

Sal wasn't even using it correctly. It cuts on the move backwards not forwards.
Much faster to start drum sanding with 36 or 40 grit, then progress to 60, 80. When edgering move clockwise around the room.
I agree we also do 36 60 or 80 then buff 100 and that’s it. Then 180 grit buffing between poly coats
I start with a 36. Sometimes a 24 depending if it's warped. Then move to a 50, 80 finish on a 120
@@npastran90 I heard if you use to fine a grit it closes the pores in the wood floors in the stain won’t take,

How often do you have to change sand paper?
Very often, think of a size that you can do a snow angel. That’s usually 1-2 sheets of sand paper.
Great job bro

I just did this yesterday. My buddy’s home had a low ceiling so I had to use the edge sander and now my back and legs are killing me 😫

Is this a drum sander ?
Your drumming is also backwards as the machine cuts on the right you should cut left to right so the wheels are referencing flat floor.
Great video!!
Thanks man good video going to do mine soon
Great video, subscribed 👍
What grid of sandpaper do you need to remove carpet staples from a hardwood floor?
you puled them out manually.
pull
Pliers. Elbow grease
Why didn't you lower the drum as you reversed? Pull up slightly, and, as you begin to back up, put it back down.
That's what I do
Your pull cut is what makes the Job ....

Hi, where are you located?
Is the same process before laying down vinyl?
you would have to remove the hardwood floor first
U lay vinyl over the wood. Which is a sin. My opinion

I start with a 24 then go to a 60 and depends but after 60 I might go 120 to smooth
Do these kick up dust all over the walls and baseboard trim?
I’m wondering if I should paint wall before or after?
After you sand
And get all dust off floor
What’s the best mask to use for sanding?
What mask is good to do this job?
You could do this
Si tuvieras las herramientas correctas serías un experto.
How can I get it of pets stains
Pet stains or water stains if penetrated its pretty much toast and rot thats why its black or discoloured . replace the boards .

Does it make much dust in the air?
It should also be noted that if you run the machine up the wall, it will easily remove that ugly wallpaper!
i see people that sand it as the go back dont lift the handle
