- Follow us on this first video of a two part series of us pulling a 900 hour Deere 6090 9.0L engine out of an 850j dozer. The engine has some serious blow by that looks to be caused by a lack of an air filter. Follow along to see what we find!

Looking forward for part 2. Thanks Clint.
Part 2 is loaded and will come out next Sunday!

Good job! Interesting watching this stuff come apart and go back together in good running order. DP sent me over.
Keep watching we have big plans for this machine!
Clint, I'm a new subscriber from Maine. I know nothing about cars, trucks or anything else other than where the key goes and the number for AAA. Over my 65 years I have heard all about the stuff you're doing but it was never explained. You do a good job explaining what's happening. Thank you for a great video. DP sent me here.
Well thanks for coming over
Me too,,,, I am in awe!
My introduction into construction was in 78 , I was driving a tipper , you call them a dump truck , we were carting rock past a D9 ripping sand stone , me being nosey got to know the driver he told me his D9 had 9000 hrs on it and was due in for a new undercarriage motor was still good but years of ripping sand stone had buggered the running gear ..We got talking about the motor and stuff , all the machines were serviced every day ,, He told me in dusty conditions you could dust the motor in 20 minutes ,,
Like your shop set up. Like the way you work, like your thinking. Nice tear down. Looking forward to part 2
Part 2 just aired this am!
I never like back ground music of any sort. HOWEVER, the guitar on your montage made me want to pick up my guitar. Since cancer, I haven't been moved to play. Till now. Thank you!
Thanks
Hope all goes well
19:05 An engine uses a difference in temperature to do work. A motor converts one form of energy into another.
Aside from one of your other videos, I have never seen “blow by” from engine before…..not in my personal life or on any other UA-cam channel. I’m aware of what it is….. But that’s insane how much smoke one of those Diesel engines can put out. It’s like air compressor hooked up to a fog machine. That’s nuts🤷🙂 I never guessed there would be that much volume.
Nice tractor crack dispenser (ether) on it haven't seen on of those since the 90s
I appreciate the quality of work you guys perform. I'm a DP transplant as well.
Thanks
I gotta add, you know how the Army uses smoke screens! This is just one of the s. s. generators!🤣
Reminds me of all the tractors I overhauled from the bottom up.85 and 155 kamatsu.Cat D7 high track.Lots of bull work. Hard on the body.
Come over from Dirt Perfects channel. Love watching the mechanical work also.
thanks for watching
You guys are doing great work looking forward to part 2 keep fixing the old iron prices for new equipment is outrageous
Saw this rig on Dirt Perfect's pond demo project. Looks like a great piece of equipment.
For sure
It’s been working great for him
Heck of a good show. Learned a lot. thanks for sharing. Now let me find the reassembly!!!
Interesting the range of stuff you get into. More interesting is making it right so your customers get good value. I know a lot of new viewers came here after introduction at Dirt Perfect.. Everyone was impressed at the quality of your post sale service, stepping up to make it right. Now he is repeat buyer, and you have a ton of new subscribers👍.
4/7/22; Clint great video 2day; always enjoy seeing you & crew 'wrench' a big Dozer project..this one is rebuild -out of frame-replacing pistons & liners due to extreme intake/abrasive-dusty-air-flow ruining metal-2-metal fit of piston rings-2-liners...causing massive 'blow-by' & loss of power & oil.
Glad you bring us armchair viewers into yur very well equipped shop & combined with yur professional experience to remedy & restore 900 hour Dozer back to full utilization. Great to see.. & learn...just how this is done !🛠👍👍👍🧑🔧😊
Thanks
I really enjoy watching at the work getting done on the equipment and your professional knowledge on this stuff
That depends on where you call The West, I am out here where most people call the lower part of the High Desert , and that is probably most West than you are thinking
It looks like Randy did an awesome job there and a really interesting video, looking forward to part 2. Also, DP sent me over here.
Thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing another great video looking forward for the next one!
Thanks for watching
It’s uploaded and should air next Sunday
Clinton I watched all the way to the end and you didn't show removing the liners!! You all make it look pretty easy.
You do a fine job describing and most of the time showing what you said you were going to show.
Thanks
Those 850 John Deeres are great Dozers..Cant wait to see part 2. And Dirt Perfect told me about Your channel...Great Video..
Thanks
Part 2 is up and there is more coming out this weekend on that machine with DP
Thanks guys
Thanks for watching
Those are high dollar factory installed options. Anti-personnel obfuscation fog and anti-insect fog options engaged.
If it's that clean , how much dirt is in the oil filter and oil pan
Great video guy’s, love watching.
Thanks Clint!
Awesome video👌
Thanks Clint
Great Video . I never did a diesel engine .. cars ,trucks and lawn mowers ,,wish I could have seen the sleeves come out . my guess is the piston that fell out the rings might be stuck a bit or worn a bit more then other cyl ?? would be blow by the way it come out so easy ,, I need to learn diesel more since my truck and tractor are both diesel ,, please keep the videos coming ,, thank you ..
They were all pretty much worn the same
Some just don’t wanna play well and come out easy like some!
The only major difference between a gas and diesel is no sparkplug and everything is built heaver for high compression
I thought it looked familiar. Dp likes to work it hard. Great video Clint.
Yep
Hello there. We have Snap on and Mac tools. You never need any others. If you brake them they replace them. It's not often you brake tham.
I was watching the 6090 teardown and you guys discussed the difference between a motor and an engine. There is a company that you may have known about that made manuals for repairs on cars and trucks. The books were called “Motor’s Auto Repair Manual.”
After I been watching your content for a few weeks now I finally decided to sub on yalls show . Lol for sure it's a higher tech channel and way cleaner then what I see on DP .lol .
Thanks for the sub
Looks like someone was using the machine for a Mosquito Fogger. For the cost of a piece of equipment like that you would think that they would keep the maintenance and filters up to standard. I enjoy watching your videos. I think back to the days after I left the Navy and wish that I had went to Diesel Mechanic school. I would have enjoyed that type of work. As I ended up being a Operator in a chemical plant teaching OSHA regulations for safe operation of plants.
That engine by itself probably outweighs my Mazda B2000, but the shocker for me is that alternator can't be any bigger than my mini pickup's 60A unit.
Now, thats "Blow By"!
Any piece of heavy equipment you buy that is from the desert southwest is going to be filled with lots of dust. There is dust everywhere in these climates and no getting away from it. Some of the dust is so fine, it can get past air filters or really clog them up quickly; forcing frequent filter changes, particularly in the Spring Months during s dust storms.
900 hours run time is not much ; which suggests the dozer was probably not maintained properly in that climate.
I can’t believe that piston just fell out I’ve never seen that happen on any engine… But it was very cool. Once everything is freshened up she’ll be a dandy !
You need to check all the little ends as some of them are elongated.
thanks guys but I wish you wouldn't work in fast forward. i really need to see everything you do and when you speed up the redording I miss so much. Thanks from Australia
It’s a motor no matter what is used to turn it !
Hey Clint, that's not blow by, it's an Army mosquito control fogger attachment on that dozer.
Great video thank you keep them coming
Thanks
All the bits look sweet except the sleaves bro so a good chance it will have many years life left in it. Great video too. Safe travels
It looks like the rings.
Hey that's like my truck at a stop sign you know when you take you can't see nothing 🤣
Hey Clinton, Can't sleep! Watch another older video! yyaaa.... Thumbs up! Jim
Crankshaft look like it was good shape
Fork lifts work really well! I'm wondering why you don't have overhead electric winches?
Howdy yup the sands of time will take toll on a lot of iron making it smooth to the touch amazing what it can do 😎🇺🇸 NY
All of the yellow might be new. Never repainted green. Might give you a hint what they did.
cant waite good for DP
Is that what they call splitting the fram
very educational
thanks
Have a 850 k inside dozer great engine but no engine will last without air filter. Mines starts -20 10 cranks and fire. The 18 Rottne forwarders I run have same engine. Some great info thanks
Trimble system on an army dozer. What a shame they dusted it
Correct
In regards to the truck build have you given any more thought to a wrecker build
We started on the truck build today
Stay tuned for a video on it!
Interesting video. Always wondered how you guys distinguish between a “motor” that is electric and a motor that most other parts of the world call an engine? Always find that very strange.
Prety impressive Clint. You have all the right tools and the knowledge to use them. I'm curious as to where you accumulated all your knowledge on these machines. Did you work for a John Deere dealership? I missed where you said how the engine transfers power to the transmission. There were some plastic ears that transfers energy through the plastic coupling? What does it drive?
Only worked for my dad when growing up and myself for the last 15 years
It does have a plastic drive coupling
Great video.
Thanks
For the motor vs. engine debate, while technically correct, I always defer back to the same argument.......they're called motorcycles, not "enginecycles". LOL
The cordless shop light works like a strobe during filming. Couldn't see a cross hatch if I had to. Hope you find a better light!
Hey Clint, I came over from DP's channel (after I saw you deliver what I believe this dozer to Mike while he was filling in NYA Millenial's pond). Were you thinking of Mike while tearing down this motor?
Thanks for coming over to watch. Yes this was the same dozer and we had plans to test run it but he fell in love with it
Hmm. Is that the oil filter o-ring fella?
Not an issue of they will seal up, they no longer seal up. Gross wear as you found.
Question about missing belly pans: Is it possible the OEM pans are replaced with blast resistant armored pans for military duty, and when they are done, they remove the armor leaving the bottom open? Or.. am just over-thinking it? .. that they just strip stuff like winches and rippers for re-use or separate sale, and the original pans just get lost in the shuffle.
They just strip them
They don’t have any special pans to begin with
Thanks
@@C_CEQUIPMENT Thanks! I wonder about stuff....
Great vid
Thanks
Watched Dirt perfect then came to you, be here for a while.
Great
Thanks for watching
Hi My Dear Friend Very Very Good Job ❤❤❤❤❤
IS This THE 850j dozer you sold to Dirt Perfect ?
Yes
Dang, what did the compressor fins look like on the turbo?
I have a 1984 450D that has about 5500 hours and has never smelled ether! starts at 15 degrees! Yes i like John Deere! Nice dozer! I would love to have you and your crew service my dozer! Class acts all of you!
Those are good old machines
I did quite a few in frames.Much nicer to do it on the floor.
nice
Coffees on!!Enjoyed! Cheers!;-)!
Crosshairs in cylinders ??? It ain't a gun scope brother. Lol . Cross hatching is the word you was looking for I'm sure @ 22:07 . You got it right later on in the video.
In my head I know what I want to say but it always doesn’t come out right lol
i like your channel
That engine stand is stout!
great
3rd shop couldn't handle an engine rebuild? I'm surprised they just didn't pull the engine and replace it with a new one!!!
So it was dusted, so to speak ?
Correct
Lol more smoke coming out the blow by tube than the stack.
fogging for mosquitos
Damn Good video
Thanks
The rods are fractured, not cracked
Thanks
Love it
And that kids is how you properly dust an engine. Chaps my hide to see my government abuse our equipment like that... then send it on down the road while they buy another brand new replacement. Guess they don't fix anything anymore.
All internal combustion engines are motors. Not all motors are engines. Motors develop energy or impart motion.
Motors versus engines versus motors ad infinitum. I have listened to various arguments about terminology for over 50 years now. You seem to have given it some thought yourself so I would like to ask how you feel about the use of the term "steam engine". Everybody apparently is comfortable with saying "steam engine" and most seem to agree that a steam engine is a real thing. So, what makes a steam engine an "engine" instead of a "motor". Before making a knee jerk answer, consider that there are things called "air motors" and "hydraulic motors" and "electric motors". Do not confuse the term "steam engine" with "locomotive", just the term "steam engine". Opinions welcome.
@@larrywalker7759 I’m not making an argument that nothing else can be an engine, just that an internal combustion engine is still a motor a steam engine or an external combustion engine is also a motor. That’s all my friend.
@@scottpowers6668 And I am not arguing either way. I am just commenting about how some people do have arguments about whether it is correct or incorrect to refer to any I.C.E. as a motor versus engine. Some folks claim that if the device burns the fuel within itself to yield the motive energy, it is an engine (hence the I.C.E.) but if the motive energy is produced at a different location and then delivered to the device to be converted into motion, it is a motor. So why doesn't everybody buy engine oil instead of motor oil? And why is nobody saying steam motor? And these are just in the English language, I wonder if they have these debates in other languages.
How many HP on that engine?
205hp
Low hour engine literally sand blasted internally!
Hey Clinton who is the new guy . Is Kevin still with you
Yes
This is an older video
Where’s Kevin?
If you believe the bearings are good. Why not do an inframe rebuild? God bless
So on these engines I can have them out in 60 min on a engine stand. It takes that long just to get the oil pan off in the machine, you have to remove front engine mount bolts anyway and jack the motor up just to get pan off. Then you are dealing with all the dirt and such trying to do an inframe and it takes longer and you will not get as clean of an job. So in this case its quicker and easier to pull the engine.
Thanks for the comment and for watching
👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🗽🙏🏻 Enjoyed!
Thanks
Then boat motor does not fit engine and it is not electric.
Part 2 is good to after 1 - 2 is better lol
Mosquito fogger big time
That Dozer was treated like an unwanted stepchild by mechanics I wouldn't allow to work in a child's tricycle.
I sure hope the Army never sent them into an active combat zone.
They'd be more dangerous to our troops than the enemy.
I'm sure when a customer comes to get this one they'll be able to know it's gonna be reliable for years to come with your crew working on it.
Well watch dirt perfects channel and you will see the dozer in action because he owns it now
@@C_CEQUIPMENT.
Mike's channel is where I found out about your channel.
I watched the first series about him getting one of those then the one were it got traded in for this one then his getting the ripper attachment on the back.
Now the tile ripper he designed and built which him and Arron Man Behind The Insanity finished yesterday's video.
I've commented on the fact he should patent it and get someone to build and sell the.
Possibly the guys who built Chris Letsdig18's custom excavator bucket he designed.
I'm sure there's other Ho operators who lay tile, wire and other items underground who'd be interested in buying one.
