"Style" or "Sutairu" is Japanese is a wa-eigo word: a borrowed word that has a different meaning for them. In English, it's typical to use the word style to describe peoples' clothing/fashion. In Japan the word "sutairu", means "body shape" or physique, and is used to describe one's preference in body shape, like slender ("suratto"), chubby ("pocchari"), or sexy/curvy. When they say only someone "stylish" can pull it off, they mean someone who has the body type to look good in one. For leggings that would typically mean someone has the right curves, butt and leg thicknesses. But yes, it would be subjective. And also they would avoid mere leggings because it reveals shape too much (body "line"), plus a cameltoe risk- skintight leggings is essentially equivalent to "naked".
I'm a curvy Japanese-American and I agree that leggings aren't as popular in Japan as to here in the States (California, where I live). One time I visited my relatives in Japan and I was gonna go for a morning jog with my cousin, but she told me that I should wear shorts over it as it was "revealing" (showing the curves of my hips, thighs, and butt) and people might think I'm naked. I thought it was absurd as I always wear leggings when I workout or go out as they are really comfortable and I'm obviously wearing my underwear underneath, but I wore shorts anyway. Even with my shorts on, I got a lot of stares so I totally see the different of norms between the two countries.

I find it very interesting the difference in fashion intention between USA / UK and Japan, in the USA at least it seems the goal is to make it look effortless and like you didnt plan on wearing what you picked, and everyone you talked to in Japan was excited to talk about their outfit concepts and why they picked what they did
No it isn't, people try just as hard in the UK/US for their outfits. Have you ever asked someone what effort they put into their fit? Have you ever seen those videos? They're exactly the same. If you're talking about joggers and an old hoodie, yeah that is the "norm" but those people aren't getting asked about the "thought" that went into their outfit, as obviously they just want to be comfortable. Also notice how insanely ornate the Westerner in this video is dressed...disproving your point. :p
@@samaraisnt I personally have seen that most people DO in fact try to make it look effortless in the USA, it's like that messy bun trend we had or the baggy clothes, they're meant to have effort put into it while looking like a "wow they pulled it off because it's THEM and totally not because of the effort they put into it" even in most makeup trends like the clean girl look, it was made to have you look, well, clean. Not like you spent hours perfecting your makeup, but like you just "woke up that way" because you're just "built like that". Now of COURSE people have different styles and of COURSE there will be people who have a style where they aren't trying to look like it was effortless, but the MAJORITY in the USA have this idea of effortless being superior because waking up and randomly picking a flawless outfit is depicted as better and more idolized than if you spend time and effort to look that way, it isn't about the fact of whether or not you ACTUALLY put in effort but whether or not people say "mmm she's dtm" or "wooow she's really perfect" yk? Like in Japan ofc there are people who probably don't put in effort into their clothing at times because ofc they're human they arent made to be perfect, but in their culture from what I've SEEN (I've never been I can't tell you whether or not it's true) their culture is into the whole looking like effort was made. It's just based on culture and what we idolize in each culture, doesn't mean EVERYONE has to be like that but it just means it's a lot more widespread around said area. :)
I remember when leggings were considered "not Pants" in the US. Defunct clothing brand American Apparel used to have a tag on the back saying "Leggings are not pants!", but in our defense, back then leggings were really thin and it was kind of odd to go out with just those alone. In 2007 when the trend just started, I was a kid and my favorite girl's clothing store started selling leggings, they were marketed to be worn with a skirt or dress. For years I always wore leggings at the very least with a top long enough to over my pelvis and butt lol. Later, they started making leggings more pants-like and thicker so it wasn't so weird to go without a skirt or long top. I break the rules way more now but still prefer a long top over leggings. I will not be bringing any leggings to Japan lol
I'm from the Netherlands and living in Japan for 6 years now. Not sure how popular leggings are in my country nowadays, but I also always found it weird to wear leggings casually outside home/the gym without e.g. an oversized sweater to cover your butt. Wearing it to the gym as sports wear is totally acceptable to me. To me it's kind of similar to how I would always wear a leotard while doing ballet, but would never wear a leotard outside of ballet class as fashion without at least a skirt/pants.
I really liked it when that person mentioned Brazil. Here we have a beauty standard that would be the opposite of Japan's beauty standard. There are also some Brazilian Gyaru girls here, and sometimes Brazilians ask: "wow! did you become a standard?" but this is only alternative in Japan. Btw I'm from Brazil! 💞
You won't necessarily get into trouble for wearing skimpy outfits in but definitely think its better to dress more conservatively than in certain countries that are more strict regarding dress. My girlfriend certainly dressed more conservatively than back home when we were in Japan few years ago. We were in Japan few years and I instantly realized the Japanese culture in general is extremely conservative regarding women's clothes. My girlfriend wore bare legs on our first day out and never did again because she realized very quickly that it's not really a thing in Japan culture. Some people may find it surprising but Japan is very conservative regarding women's clothes. I would definitely not recommend any crop tops, short skirts, tank tops, or short shorts in Japan… as it may get some weird stares from the locals or considered disrespectful. Wearing skimpy outfits would certainly draw dirty looks and other types of negative reactions in social and public settings in Japan so its better to dress conservatively especially if u are a woman.
People are only surprised cause they think anime=real life and everyone is a 16-year-old dressed like a porn star...meanwhile actual highschool girls aren't allowed to wear makeup or dye their hair. And obviously they aren't wearing micro skirts. It's funny how anime fans get angry at women for dressing slightly more modestly than a character like tights underneath or not just full on thong & a bra for a cosplay, when never in a million years would the Japanese do that...not even go bare legged~! 😭
In many videos similar to this where japanese people get interviewed, I have never seen the person get interviewed so happy and laughing all the time. I'm not sure whether its something to do with the target audience regarding the question or the colorful personality host asking the questions. Regardless it was very nice to see this level of conversation in an interview.
I’m from Ukraine and we never wear leggings on a daily basis, we only wear them when we work out. They just don’t look like a proper piece of clothing, it’s like wearing pajamas outside 🫤 Also when I moved to Japan I noticed that short skirts and shorts aren’t really popular in smaller cities. If you don’t live in Tokyo/Osaka/Nagoya you won’t see people wearing revealing clothes too often. I always feel out of place when I wear mini skirts here 😢
Привіт, земляк чи землячко! Я пам'ятаю часи, коли у нас леггінси були в моді і їх носили не тільки на тренування. Добре, що ті часи минули )) Але й зараз їх не сприймають як піжаму, трапляються любительки.
Are high heels as prevalent in Ukraine as they are in poland? It was so weird to see women on the countryside wear 10cm heels and walk some argicultural road near a village.
@@adriankoch964 i think it's popular as "going out" look, but on daily basis i don't see woman on heels that higher then 5cm. sneakers and shoes w low soles is more popular here
I can relate to this so much, I'm from Poland and even though it's kinda normal now to wear just leggings I still hate it. For me it still feels like wearing your underwear, especially since originally you could only buy them at underwear and lingerie stores (it's been over 10 years ago though). I only wear leggings with something else on top of them.
Not all Americans wear leggings either. I've lived in both Asia and the US for decades and some clothing trends are only popular with certain styles of people. Leggings that bares the shape of your buttocks are mostly by young white girls, but not all of them either. It's like some people wear mini shorts but most of the population does not. I only wear leggings for exercise and never would consider it a normal clothing item.
I remember one incident where airline didn't let a women in tight legging onboard saying that the legging was considered as an underwear which caused a big headline.
I love how the one girl said "I won't wear it, but if I see someone else wearing it I won't say anything" More people should be like this. As long as people have all their private bits covered when out in public, who cares what they wear? Let them be themselves and be happy. It is not going to kill you or hurt your child to see a person wearing leggings, a low cut top, or a male wearing a skirt.
Actually people hardly ever do say anything. I see people wearing crazy stuff all the time and I never say anything at all to them about it and no one else does either. Do you actually have people approaching you on the street and telling you to wear something else? I doubt that happens. Everyone always acts so persecuted nowadays when in fact they aren't. But it is popular these days for people to pretend that everyone is attacking them and they are a victim.
I don't see anyone saying anything in the many countries I have lived. People keep things to themselves by and large. But it may actually hurt a child to see a woman wearing a low cut-top depending on what age the child is and how low is the cut, and it definitely hurts a child to see a male wearing a skirt - maybe not drastically, not it twists the innocence of the child just a little bit. Just my opinion. I wouldn't jump in and judge the person, but that doesn't mean we should pretend things don't impresses children because they need guardians to protect and guide for a reason. If they're not easily influenced then they are adults.
"If it's not bothering you why should you care" this way of thinking needs to die. Without some level of judgment towards other peoples behaviors we'd have all sorts of degenerate things normalized.
As someone with a lot of chronic pain who values comfort and functionality while maintaining a not too hot temperature, leggings are amazing for me. Wearing shorts is something I don't do too much as it's more "revealing" feeling to me than the leggings are! These days leggings are so thick you can't see through them unless you buy a very cheap pair, which would just end up ripping for me anyways. I'm quite self conscious about my legs being bare so I'm kind of disappointed that if I go to Japan I might be stared at for leggings! Oh no!
You don't have to wear JUST shorts, you can wear them over your leggings - or just wear something long on top, like a tunic or an oversized sweatshirt.
I kinda confuses me that they say that they don't like to show their body shape, yet they wear short bottoms and expose their whole legs. Do legs don't count as showing part of their body shape?
We live in Japan. My wife wears them all the time. She’s Chinese, but everyone always assumes she’s Japanese. No one has ever given her any grief or drama about it.
It seems like there might be confusion about the distinction between “tights” (which are very thin and often semi-transparent) and “yoga pants” (which are form fitting but not at all transparent). In the US, the term “leggings” is sometimes used to refer to tights and sometimes to yoga pants, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Japanese have trouble with this, and just avoid both entirely.
No they're saying they don't wear either alone, because they are too closely associated to hose/tights. They know what yoga pants are they mention seeing them on foreigners throughout...I am a professional stylist/lingerie buyer and I can tell you "leggings" always means the thicker ones so you're wrong, they're right lol.
@@samaraisnt if you deem my statement “wrong lol”, you apparently don’t understand what “seems” and “might” mean. And while leggings have a specific correct definition (that I already gave) that doesn’t prevent anyone in any country from being confused/wrong about it - which was also a point you missed / failed to comprehend “lol”. So I’m right and you’re as ignorant as you are arrogant “lol”.
Funny how even though I don't mind wearing revealing clothes, but I never got comfortable wearing just leggings without something on top. Girls here wear just leggings but I noticed I myself prefer the Japanese style of dressing up more.
I think best way to get people there more comfortable with it, is to get more people who do not care to be looked at to wear it in public and the overexposure will cause people to start thinking "maybe it's not so bad after all"
I think they don't want to normalize wearing it alone though. One girl said if it will become a trend she will not join it. Another said, it will never be a trend in Japan. Let's just respect their culture.
Lol that’s really funny. I lived in yoga pants the whole three weeks I was in Tokyo. I only noticed people looking at my koi mermaid leggings, but everyone does that anyways. 😅
Leggings weren't ok here in the US until the past few decades, either. Lots of us have good shapes and would still never wear them here without a skirt on top or a long top.
i am a little confused,.. the “leggings” the girl with pigtails was wearing under shorts, we in North America call those nylons or pantyhose and they are underwear. That’s not leggings. Then tights for us is a thicker not able to be seen through version of pantyhose and should be worn under a skirt (it helps be a cold weather choice when wearing skirts in the fall), and then leggings are stretchy skin hugging thin pants. They are meant to be worn alone, and admittedly supposed to be worn exercising. But i got the impression that nylons were being included in “leggings” definition.
Brazilian here. Leggings are pretty common here. It started as an gym outfit and ended up becoming an common outfit for most women. Here it is normal seeing women from all ages using leggings especially if they have a nice body.
Leggins or yoga pants are the default womans outfit here. Woman wear it in the metro, when going to the supermarket or when picking up their kids from school. Which as a traveler is sometimes very pleasing to see, other times very much not so. In São Paulo there also the bonus of seeing a lot of Brazilians with Japanese, Korea or Chinese heritage, but the Brazilian fire and toned bodies (big butts, haha).
@@giselemascarellisalgado2207 The no shorts rule is ridiculous in a country as hot as this, esp when the A/C doesn't work in a lot of buses. (Also the no havaians, high society rule in the country that brand originated from)
Leggings and "bike shorts" are very common in Australia and worn by the girls everywhere, not only for exercise. Often they even have a short top so you can see their belly, *IT IS ABSOLUTELY NORMAL IN AUSTRALIA* But I found that women in Japan normally wear long skirts and huge boots; short skits are very rare.
Most Asian countries believes in modesty. But they don't hate it when westerners wear them cus they recognize the different personalities of the cultures. I am okay with leggings for workout, but when it's like skin-tight then I have an issue. Girls showing off their butts in people's faces are desperate and silly, because only people they're attracting are perverts. Everyone has butts. The whole "showing off" certain body parts is really just too silly.
@@asves4536, the answer is much simpler: they're not decadent. The western civilization is decadent, corrupt and rotten and that shows off in choices of clothing as well.
@@asves4536 Nope, western women NEED attention. There are plenty of clothes that keep you cool and breath without outlining your camel toe for the world.
9:27 I was worried about this before. I don't wear leggings but I have a lot of skinny jeans. But I see a lot of 'jeggings' (with super stretchy jeans material) and tight fitting pants..., Maybe it's the fabric? but they also don't like leather pants... and v-necks...
I’m so glad I knew this already when I went to Japan, tbh it felt weird putting shorts or a skirt on over my leggings, every day. I was self conscious of my butt a lot there, so I mostly stuck to wearing jeans or a skirt w leggings whenever I could. Long skirts were really popular there too.
In China some women do wear legging out. And it's common in gym clubs. But I think most Chinese people could understand why Japanese don't want to wear it out.
Such a great info to learn also complete opposite where i live in, mini skirts here are the ones considered revealing (tho it's not "not allowed" but it's just the same category as low v neck and short shorts) and leggings and jeggings r just normal here in all ages
I also wouldn't wear leggings without a long shirt overneath. And I also think that showing much flesh of decollete is not really appropriate in Japan, as it isn't in Korea either.
I am so surprised how they view leggins. Never thought that. I love wearing them (usually in combination with a skirt or shorts), it never crossed my mind that people could consider them underwear. Though I kinda see it if you really only wear leggins without anything else on top. Hearing the reasoning of the girl at 9:42 I wonder what they would think of jeggins. They definitely are very tight and therefore you see the shape of the body (which is seemingly a no-go) but they also have the same seams that Jeans have.
To be honest, I don't care what to wear and what not to in Japan. That's really something where I like to play the gaijin card even though knowing about Japanese culture & fashion standards. E.g. when I was there for vacation this may, I wore tank tops all the time because I'd die due to the heat on some days. I also wore just leggins twice this time on the days when we had our flights. Sorry, but having to sit for 14 hours in a plane is not really enjoyable with jeans and the like. :D It was the first ime I did that in my life and, well, the comfort was worth it haha
I’m glad they confirmed wearing something over leggings was okay because I prefer that - I can’t wear my bare legs exposed- so I was concerned ! 🤣 I was like -- but what if I’m wearing a skirt or shorts?!?! “Isn’t that more conservative!? Not less!” Whew- safe!
never knew they had this view until now and i have the same view 💀 i only wear leggings under skirts, way too embarrassing for me to wear leggings only. my mom always wanted me to wear leggings for some reason but i’ve always hated it

I wonder if that's ok?
I’d be screwed if I went to Japan with my current wardrobe… most of my longer bottoms are leggings so on cold days that’s what I’d have to wear, but I guess I could wear my skirts more comfortably there (I rarely wear them here) I live in Ireland btw so leggings are quite trendy here
I currently live in Croatia and here people would freak out more if someone looked like they wear only a shirt and no shorts are visible. We love to see the shorts 😅
In the US we go exercise in public but Japanese people don't really do that. Maybe in a jogging suit (loose) in a park or for school? But generally, no. Athleasure is a huge thing in the US and you can wear flattering/sexy gym sets everywhere. I like it!
In mostly Asian countries, everyone knows fiction is fiction, not reality.Respecting each other is a must to stay peace. In west, individualism caused people always self-center/less considerate/self fulfilling 1st.That's why westerners (mostly)is highly expressive from the aspects of behavior/clothing/etc in daily lives

Here in Germany most girls/woman only wear leggings for things like workout or any other type of sportiv activity. I personally don’t see many people wearing leggings casually as their standard clothes.
Well, I cannot really agree. I'm also from Germany, and I do wear leggins on daily basis even outside and I do know a lot people, who wears leggings like me everyday. Sometimes in combination with skirts and sometimes with oversize hoodies/shirts. I work in kindergarten, so I prefer skirts, dresses, tights and also leggins, because of it's comfiness, since I do have to sit on the floor sometimes. The culture is soo different in Japan compared to where I live in the US. They would have been bullied for wearing that kinda stuff hear back when I was in school for sure. Heck, I probably would have been the bully too. but after you get older you look at that fashion like wh other hell cares what you wear right?
The most hilarious thing to me walking around Japan is such conservative outfits in general, except all the girls with short skirts which for some reason is the OK one. Not hating, they look good, but it makes me chuckle.
Not just Japan on the leggings, from what I know, some SEA countries see that as a very inappropriate clothing to wear outside. Tight clothing in general is a solid no. While for leather pants, it can still be worn if it's not too tight but wearing that will make others think that you're crazy, if you wear it under hot weather. SEA countries is usually hot for about half year long (could be different depending on countries' climate).

You should see what high-school girls, especially in the Tokyo area are wearing as their school uniforms.
MICROMINISKIRTS 😊 !

They just don’t look like a proper piece of clothing, it’s like wearing pajamas outside 🫤
Also when I moved to Japan I noticed that short skirts and shorts aren’t really popular in smaller cities.
They must think you're a b*tch
@@yanawald5918 в 90-е в СНГ было популярно вроде бы
I only wear leggings for exercise and never would consider it a normal clothing item.
and i donno how some ppl find leggings that fit them perfectly ._. my home leggings alway droop or sag somewhere..
I remember one incident where airline didn't let a women in tight legging onboard saying that the legging was considered as an underwear which caused a big headline.
always notice how nice Japanese fashion is now some gonna know i been liking their fashion through out the years
I love how the one girl said "I won't wear it, but if I see someone else wearing it I won't say anything" More people should be like this.
@@SpeakTheTruthLouder No it doesn't hurt a child.
Stop being so sensitive.
They dont say anything to you, but they probably have so many thoughts about you and they probably have a negative view, depending on the person.
@@qllams yes I think this is also a good idea and one I’ll have to use :)
I kinda confuses me that they say that they don't like to show their body shape, yet they wear short bottoms and expose their whole legs. Do legs don't count as showing part of their body shape?
Since they (almost) all have to wear skirts in school they are used to it.
Because showing camel toes is worse than legs

The cat at the end is like: "I can wear whatever I want because I'm too cute!"
I always wear something on top of my leggings as it's more modest. So I can totally appreciate what the Japanese are saying.
if u guys ask what japanese wearing at gym or running outside. tracksuit, jogger or running short
We live in Japan. My wife wears them all the time. She’s Chinese, but everyone always assumes she’s Japanese. No one has ever given her any grief or drama about it.
Yeah.. they don't really like it.. but they're not judging either.
They literally showed them a picture of what they were talking about.

They girls are clearly dressing for themselves and not for the gaze of others *cough* men
Lol that’s really funny.
Aqui a gente sai de leggings p todos os lugares. Eu ia trabalhar de leggings. Mas shorts não se pode ir em todo lugar, como igrejas, por exemplo.
Often they even have a short top so you can see their belly, *IT IS ABSOLUTELY NORMAL IN AUSTRALIA*
But I found that women in Japan normally wear long skirts and huge boots; short skits are very rare.
It’s a culture difference, and maybe environmental too?
@@asves4536, the answer is much simpler: they're not decadent. The western civilization is decadent, corrupt and rotten and that shows off in choices of clothing as well.
To be fair, those girls would probably get 10 different heat strokes in half an hour if they went around dressed like a Japanese girl in Australia
The girl with ginger hair and the black and blue hair...both wore something i'd wear myself. Love their sense of style. *claps*
A friend of mine used to call leggings "mumble pants". Why? Because you can see the lips moving, but you can't hear anything.
thanks for the laugh
In China some women do wear legging out. And it's common in gym clubs. But I think most Chinese people could understand why Japanese don't want to wear it out.
It's interesting that leggings are not popular. I live in Hong Kong and its quite common to see local girls wear leggings.

Yeah it's okay. As long as you wear it with a skirt or short or even a dress

With due respect, majority of those wearing just leggings are neither athletic, fit or even planning to be one at least in most Western countries.
@IleBRRG sure, but that helps explain why it's considered ok to wear

Craziest thing about Japan is everyone wearing layers with a plush jacket or trench coat when it’s like 75 degrees F/24 degrees Celsius with humidity. I was like I could not survive here if I had to copy their style 😂

Here in Germany most girls/woman only wear leggings for things like workout or any other type of sportiv activity. I personally don’t see many people wearing leggings casually as their standard clothes.
Yeah, tbh Leggings also aren’t the best, but that’s just my opinion ^^
Well, I cannot really agree. I'm also from Germany, and I do wear leggins on daily basis even outside and I do know a lot people, who wears leggings like me everyday. Sometimes in combination with skirts and sometimes with oversize hoodies/shirts.
I work in kindergarten, so I prefer skirts, dresses, tights and also leggins, because of it's comfiness, since I do have to sit on the floor sometimes. I even have short leggins to wear underneath dresses and skirts for hot weathers. In winter I would wear long skirts, while in summer mini and medium skirts.

I second the motion to bad no one listens to the comments. However what I can say is that fashion is always changing so at some point it will be different.
Leggings works well as inner wear. Outer wear, it is not.
That's because the average American is overweight/obese. I wish that was a faulty statistic.

I think in the US leggings can be seen as a form of sweatpants. Kind of like something to wear when you're lazy. That's jow I see them at least.
The culture is soo different in Japan compared to where I live in the US. They would have been bullied for wearing that kinda stuff hear back when I was in school for sure. Heck, I probably would have been the bully too. but after you get older you look at that fashion like wh other hell cares what you wear right?
That's why Japanese people are stylish. For me leggins are like thick tights, I never use leggins instead of trousers.
The most hilarious thing to me walking around Japan is such conservative outfits in general, except all the girls with short skirts which for some reason is the OK one. Not hating, they look good, but it makes me chuckle.
I have no idea what I'd say if someone asked me what my fashion was. "I put on some clothes?" I tend to just wear jeans and a tee shirt.
"the no sense of fashion outfit" is a fringe fashion in on itself lol
Fashion was made up by capitalism to sell more clothes and cause, in a way, planned obsoleteness.

@Ask_Japanese Out of curiosity, is the kogal look still a thing in Tokyo? Or has it died out?
Not just Japan on the leggings, from what I know, some SEA countries see that as a very inappropriate clothing to wear outside. Tight clothing in general is a solid no.
While for leather pants, it can still be worn if it's not too tight but wearing that will make others think that you're crazy, if you wear it under hot weather.
SEA countries is usually hot for about half year long (could be different depending on countries' climate).
