      Hi Jesse, I love your videos and I see the work you put into them. I would like to suggest that on the thumbnails, you add the title in Japanese (probably in smaller, plain letters). Below "What people are wearing in Tokyo", 「東京の人がつけている物. That way, more Japanese people can watch it knowing they're part of the target audience and that Japanese is spoken. Apologies for the poor nihongo

    I just LOVE how unique japanese people are with their fashion. They are truly expressing individuality. In my city/country everyone looks the same and would stare at you when you look colorful or different. Such a shame. I wish every culture to be so open to different looks.

      I mean everyone in Japan isn't like this. Most of them dress pretty similarly. But it is true that most people do have some sense of style (even if they are similar) and it greatly adds to the beauty of a city like Tokyo

    Japanese street style is IMPOSSIBLE for Westerners to imitate, no matter how they try to join in. The young Japanese have the most incredible flair, take wild risks with their materials, colours and cuts-- not to mention accessories. What it is, is the 'well' of cultural references and historical touchpoints are completely different in Japan so I'm deeply intrigued by where they're getting their inspiration as it's not the same as, say, a person in NYC or London. It's wonderfully engaging, intensely fascinating and a thrill due to how impossibly unpredictable. They're remarkably inspired, and they carry their outlandish, quirky ensembles off beautifully. When Westerners try it looks like a pastiche, somehow safe and predictable-- not to mention uptight and self-conscious. The Japanese wear their curated sartorial 'art pieces' as if they were tracksuits. I love it. You have to be in the right place in Japan to come across these really wild, intensely fashion-conscious and creatively brave young folk; people go to Japan and think everybody looks like a Harajuku Girl 'fruit' and they most certainly do not. I love people watching and I'm grateful for your upload here. So much fun, I love it!

      What I love the most is the way they play with the layers, in some way it is a continuity of the traditional clothing but reinterpreted.

      @@ucodetiaw Yes! Layering is totally part of their creative flair and key to it all. I could read/watch street style footage for hours. I especially appreciate their lack of pretention and preciousness about it. Glorious! I also enjoy Japanese tradesmen's outfits. Tabi boots and nikka pokka trousers up a ladder! Have you seen their workwear catalogues over there?! 😍

    • @clammeny
      @clammeny 2 роки тому +27

      here in the US there are so many "rules" around fit and silhouette and what's acceptable to wear at the moment that there tends to be a relatively narrow window within which someone who doesn't possess an extraordinary sense of confidence can style themselves. Even when we commit we don't go all the way and that small bit of restraint can really undo the entire fit. so yeah, totally agree about the self-consciousness in western fashion - lots of Westerners just aren't able to commit with the same totality as the Japanese .

    • @ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293
      @ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293 2 роки тому +7

      @@clammeny Oh cheers Austin! I'm so glad you know what I'm talking about, I love it when someone actually 'gets' what I'm saying, even within the horrible limitations inherent in a UA-cam comment section. I feel like we could have a boisterous, ribald long 2 hour lunch together and trade riffs, stories, theories and life experiences that tie into this juicy topic; I'm in the UK and what you said applies to humans here too, you worded it perfectly. There's a lot of peer group temperature-taking here in the UK whereas the Japanese outfits are wild self-curations that seem to relate back to no herd trends at all; each person is a colourful world onto themself. Argh, it's so difficult to put it into words! A two-hour long lunch may be too limited a time frame...😆🍹⏲🍜

    • @clammeny
      @clammeny 2 роки тому +12

      @@ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293 The way you write is so funny! In a good way, of course. It's fun to read.
      I think you touch on something profound when you talk about group temperature-taking. (Nice choice of words, by the way -- wish I'd thought of that one.)
      There's also something else, which I've been thinking a lot about lately. Middle class Americans feel like they have to be worthy of their clothes, that a piece embodies an aesthetic ideal which they can at most choose to participate in. Hence their clothes exist outside of themselves, as something /borrowed/. For example, oftentimes Americans will wear high fashion in order to absorb the prestige we see as intrinsic to it; we'll wear it as a symbol even if we're unable to parse and comprehend what the symbol means. And we're aware of this and tend to don our garments with a sense of sheepishness, with the sense that we haven't "earned" them and never will.
      But by the same token this allows for a degree of certainty because the outfit is 'credentialed'. We buy high fashion with the guarantee that it's produced from a place of good taste, or if it's avant-garde, that it's the sanctioned kind of avant-garde (which beats the purpose, if you ask me). Americans are much less likely to mod a high fashion piece or wear it alongside a piece of their own creation, like the people in this video, because they'd void that warranty -- it's up in the air how they'll be perceived once they've stepped outside the intended aesthetic of any particular piece. How ironic for a country that stereotypes Japanese people as conformist and Japan itself as a nation of uniforms!

    I loved all of them, because it's their their own individual style which is unique to them. If I had to pick one it would be Keigo his out fit was creativly put together that if I was passing him on the streets, I would do a double take look and be a brave heart and ask him about what he is weariing, and how he makes his rings..."Oh and can I borrow his bag? (Joking) 😅

    The first three looked like they were pokemon gym leaders. I was thinking a pokeball was gonna appear from their bags. All jokes aside, their fashion sense out there is truly unique. Now I'm wondering what a Japanese fashion runway would look like in Tokyo.

    In the Philippines, style freedom is a bit limited due to hot climate. It's just a matter of color mixing and accessories.
