    So all the writers are upset about ai taking their hard work yet they have no problems using ai, which uses artist's stolen work, for their book covers.

      Well, not all authors in the anti-AI camp use art. I know some who are 100% against all generative AI. I think it'd be interesting to see where authors stand with that.

      @@selfpubwithdale I suppose it depends on what AI is used for. I would love AI if it did my laundry, grocery shopping, cleaned my house and did my administration. So that I can make more art.
      I am surprised somebody actually asked writers what their opinion would be, they scraped artist's art works without asking. I think they should pay us a dollar every time our scraped/stolen art is part of a recombined image. But of course they should have asked permission before just stealing our work.

    Personally I'd love it if AI paid me to train on my books. They'd have to make it fair since my work would be used in a lot of different ways. I'd definitely not agree to it for the standard cost of my book, but if they want to make it worth it to me, then sure. Train away. I understand the fears that most have about AI... heck, I had them myself when it first came out. I've since realized that most of those fears are either no longer applicable (AI uses AI-created data now for training) or the problems are going to be across all industries, not just authors. As a software developer and author, both of my careers are threatened by AI now. I think my author career will outlast my software career though simply because a book isn't just a bunch of words on a page, which is all AI can put out. If that's all your books are, then yeah, you're in trouble. People line up for days for their favorite authors books. They actively check their websites. They care. I don't envision any reader actually caring about any AI or the content they create. I also don't fear the fake authors that pump out 100% AI written garbage because that's all it is. I'm annoyed by them, sure, but I don't fear them. It really just buries legitimate authors under a mountain of sludge, and that's where I have a problem with it, both as an author and a reader.

      THAT'S the confidence more authors need right now. Well stated, Bruce.

      @@selfpubwithdale I like Schopenhauer's view on truth: "First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as self-evident." Right now most of us are in the second stage. We've been horribly misused and abused by the AI companies, and hopefully those companies get sued into oblivion... ok rant off. I'm trying to transition into stage 3, accepting the fact that we are now in a totally different future. AI is as big of a change to writing as the keyboard is to the quill. I prefer to look for ways to use it ethically, and promote those ideas. Otherwise we're going to be overrun by fans of dishonest UA-camr's that use clickbait titles like "Make a $100,000/yr selling AI books online." When the truth is you'll make more money starting a bad garage band than trying to sell a book. Especially if you know nothing about writing. There are plenty of ethical ways to use AI. I love using it to screen my characters before I start writing with them. I do this anyway without AI, but it's a lot harder and it takes a lot of mental energy. With AI it's a breeze. AI is also an amazing thesaurus. Want to give your novel a Nordic feel? Ask AI for suggestions for a given phrase. The possibilities are endless.

    Draft2Digital has terrible customer support. I was opening an account and the last of the final step would not go through. A message came up to use the email you registered with. Well, I did use that email and tried over the next several days. I wrote to customer support telling them about the technical problem. The representative sent several emails about steps in how to enroll...apparently not even reading what I explained. When I pressed the issue...stating the technical problem needed attention...she said that is not a technical problem...and would not have it checked. That was enough for me. I will never use D2D.

    Thank you for the video Dale that is a lot of great & useful information. About the D2D survey I did fill it in a while ago; yes there seems to be a lot of "ifs" & "buts" about the topic of AI. I admit that I am a little concerned about it; what's worse is that both Amazon KDP & Ingram Spark ask whether or not, if you had used AI to write your book. To me that is an invasion of privacy; now I have never used AI to write any of my e-books/books because I don't know how to use it. As I am in the middle of my 3rd French-Spy novel (taking longer than expected) I will look at how to use AI for authors when I finish it.

      Yeah, there's a lot of questions, fear, apprehension, and what-not surrounding AI and it's understandable. We're exploring new territory, so it'll take some time to adjust. Make sure you voice your concern with those publishing platforms. They won't know if we never tell them.

    I'm not at all totally against AI generated content. I can see the concerns regarding AI generated art work. I use it to help me with my prose. I'm terrible at prose. LOL. My promps are very detailed with everything that is going on in my scenes including dialogue, what my characters are thinking and what is going on around them during the scenes. I just need assistance with my prose. Is there really anything wrong with that?

    • @selfpubwithdale
      @selfpubwithdale  День тому +1

      Personally, I see nothing wrong with that. It's all subjective. Some people will label you as "not an author" if you use any form of AI, but I honestly don't care about their opinions. The only thing I'm concerned about is creating the best reading experience for my readers. That's it.
