  • What’s the connection between Coco Chanel and the Romanov family?
In the 1920s, Gabrielle Chanel collaborated with Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia. Two women with not much in common found themselves united around a common passion, embroidery.
In their lecture, Albertini and Kurkdjian talked about Coco Chanel, Maria Pavlovna, and the famous Kitmir atelier. They also showed the embroidery samples preserved since the workshop closed in 1929.

Thank-you, wonderful to see the Kitmir samples. I enjoyed both volumes of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna's memoirs years ago and look forward to reading this new book. Another wonderful source which I assume the writers are familiar with is Alexandre Vassiliev's book, "Beauty in Exile" (published 1998), which devotes no less than 30 pages to M.P. and the Maison de Kitmir.

Amazing lecture about a magnificent art from Russia that would’ve been forever lost after the Bolshevik revolution tried to eradicate everything Romanov if the Russian emigres from the nobility had not tried to survive by recreating it in Paris. Thank you !

Perhaps a slow start, but stay with this fascinating discussion. I hope we get an English version on e-books someday. ❤

I am living in Konstanz and had known a few old friends of the Bernadottes. Maria Pavlovna was always a Grandduchess. She was very friendly with Kschessinka and her husband. And she was Not very kind about Ella.

Queen Marie of Romania wore traditional romanian blouses not Russian blouses Ms Albertini seems to think Romania is a russian culture country which is not the case

The illustration of the family tree was illegible too bad I think that could be improved
