  • Dr. Joachim Pissarro explores Russian art of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Essays on Russian art tend to focus either on the 19th century and the pre-revolutionary period, or on the revolutionary Russian Avant-Garde. Very seldom do we hear about what happened artistically prior to the Revolution, during the Revolution, and - at the other end of the spectrum - at the very end (early demise) of the Soviet Union.
In this lecture, Dr. Joachim Pissarro attempts to see the multiple - and, at times, utterly contradictory - facets of what unfolded in Russia through two centuries of one of the most complex histories on this planet.

It is an interesting lecture. But, unfortunately, when answering the question about the relationship of Soviet art to nature, Dr. Joachim Pissarro did not say anything that a huge number of Soviet artists continued the pre-revolutionary tradition of realistic landscape. Many visual masterpieces were created in this tradition during the Soviet period. He also didn't mention the rugged style of the 1960s-70s. There were many outstanding works. Unfortunately, Dr. Pissarro very quickly jumped to the Moscow Conceptualists of the 1980s. I understand the limited time of the lecture did not allow many aspects to be covered. I hope that in next lectures Dr. Pissarro will be able to pay more attention to religious motifs in official Soviet art, especially in the period 1970-80.
