- In this video you will see the New York City Movie Locations from the 1988 Classic Comedy. First up is the apartment building area that was used several times throughout the film. Where Eddie Murphy shouted “good morning my neighbors” from the fire escape, and loudly sang “To Be Loved” in the street. The Barber Shop was down stairs on the bottom level, you will see the inside as well as the outside. Next up is the McDowell's restaurant location, which has been completely transformed: from the Soul Glo sign to the golden arcs. Then we will go to the park promenade where Lisa and Akeem walked along the East River and gave some pocket change to the Duke Brothers lol. We will then go inside Hoyt Schermerhorn Station to see the place Akeem vowed to renounce his throne for Lisa's marriage. Finally wrapping up with the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, where the King and his entourage depart to head back to Zamunda.

I stayed in the Waldorf Astoria just before it closed for renovation, just because of this film. They let us wander around the ballrooms, etc. It was truly amazing

I believe that Charles "Lucky" Luciano called the Waldorf Astoria "home" back in the day. $800.00 Per month (about $15,428.00 in today's money) was the rate back in 1932. Lucky had to grease the palm of the front clerk $200.00 per month ($3857.00 today) to keep it on the down low so as no one would know who really lived there.
Wow, how the 80s was a totally diffrent climate/enviroment, even in NYC. thanks for remrmbering this now classic film and revisiting the filiming sites after 30 plus years. Miss the 80s.

You know when you see old historic sights from hundreds of years ago and you can't believe they've built over them.... same goes for things like McDowells! Places like that should have been saved for history!

I used to go to that Wendy's. They had the pictures from the movie up on their walls.
I used to live in Middle Village, I’m familiar with Woodhaven and Queens Boulevard as well! Used to go to the White Castle by QCM a bunch when I was a kid. Crazy seeing how much that whole stretch of Queens Blvd changed!

@@NickP Shari graduated from Bayside High School in Queens with my older sister. My sister said back then she used to take modeling pictures and head shots. I guess Coming to America was her big break.
The current owners of the My-T-Sharp barbershop have missed out on a great opportunity to make loads of money, if they simply just remodelled the store and the barber shop.
Just tourist alone would make the business alot of money.

Saw it in the uk last weekend,good follow up but like lots of follow ups not even close to being as good as the original due to hardly being in America.still a decent film though

I live in neighboring Nassau County, and I have over the years driven over to Rego Park where most of Coming to America was filmed to see what changed and stayed the same, I managed to step into that Wendy where McDowells was and ordered a Bagonator, you know before it was torn down to build expensive apartments.

Simply the best location youtuber the split screen fade aways are cool. All others show you a movie clip for literally 1 second then then you have to remember what you saw 1 second ago.

There are things that need to remain in the memories like this sensational film, only when they invent a spurious continuity, what was sensational is certainly tarnished.
That “common part” neighborhood is now one of the most sought after and gentrifying nabes in Brooklyn. Never saw it coming back in 1988.
Amazing.. It was great to see the once defunct building, visible in the background when the King steps out of his car now functioning.
That's funny cause Spike Lee predicted gentrification in his movie "Do The Right Thing" which premiered in 1989

Cuba Gooding Jr was actually the young man sitting on the chair getting his hair cut. Probably that was his first major movie.
Nick, thank you very much for taking the time to put together this presentation. This film came out at a time in my life when I was feeling very low...a misery unlike I have ever felt. Coming To America was the only movie that could put a smile on my face, and albeit for a few brief moments, make me happy.
Wow.. That is truly touching to hear. While I don't know what you went through, I've had a similar experience in my life as well. Where some special movies worked their magic and helped raise my spirits from a low point. It is incredible how gifted some of these creators and actors are to connect to the audience in such ways, especially at much needed times. I'm very happy to hear this video made you feel good, and thanks for sharing that personal info. Your comment is beyond appreciation.

This is amazing. Living in the UK and always wanted to visit the US and this was my favourite movie for years. I've always been fascinated with 80's and this video is just awesome! Feels like I have now visited the whole set of locations for the movies. Great work, thank you!

I remember going to that Wendys when i was a kid and they had the filming scenes on the wall. Fun fact, down the block was my barbershop when i was a kid 'Sabinos', they filmed a great scene from Goodfellas in there
That is really interesting. I’m going to do Goodfellas in the future. Was it the scene when they roughed up Henry’s gf’s boss? or is it Maury’s wig shop lol? I’m trying to remember what it could have been.
@@NickP It was Morrie's Wig Shop in the movie where Robert Deniro chokes him and the wig falls off LOL. If you watch that scene you can see the wallpaper that was up in the shop for many years. The name of the shop was Sabino's. Sabino sold the shop many years ago and it became Forest Hills Haircutters. I dont know if its still there today as i dont live in NY anymore. If you do a video and get it on a video that would be amazing!
If you make a video. Go there and ask to go in the back room. You could probably match the view to the movie

Thank you for the memories of our 1988. I would have been 16 yrs old a junior in Far Rockaway HS and I got to see the wonderful movie in the theater that year. The world has changed so much including us since 1988. 👍

The tracks are operational by the way. They just don’t have trains in use because at the end of the tracks is the NY Transit Museum which is a fully operational train station with actual train cars that need to be moved in and out of.
No they're not. They don't use the far tracks except for museum movements.

I remember them filming a scene for that film in Manhattan outside of Lincoln center but it didn't make the film, it must of been edited out.
