Let's face it, Trent Reznor just doesn't ever give anything less than an inspiring performance. He's written and produced some of the most vital and essential music in the last 30 years. Legendary.
That hidden distorted drum part... That’s why this series is so good. Never noticed that before. It’s not a surprise knowing Reznor, but damn that’s a gem.
i think that is a Reznor reused sound. he has many sounds that he changes a bit here and there but they are in 5-10 songs each. not sure where but that one sounds like PHM.
@@PjPerez Its because its mixed so low that you can barely notice it, but if its wasnt there, it would be missing. Thats a art of mixing and songwriting...
I'm not gonna say it's "easily noticeable" but after listening to this song enough times (as in over 200 times over the years), I ended up noticing it.
Speaking of NIN and production standards. The Downward Spiral, after a couple of a bit more crudely perceived first listens, I began to realize I never "ever" heard a more novel and ingenious set of approaches to production in a single package. Extremes, and seemingly blatant defiances to what the average producer was telling artists what to do and what not to do. I think I absorbed it another 40 0r so times uninterrupted during my subsequent morning commutes. I get bored easily normally, but there seemed to be layers of nuances to discover that kept me interested . Pure genius, still holds surprizes to this day.
It really is phenomenal. There are so many great interviews from the 90's where they talk about their production techniques, gear used, and so much other valuable, super interesting information. There's even a GearSlutz thread where Charlie Clouser himself (engineer / bandmate) talks about super-super-super first-hand information about many many songs and other things. Such fascinating information.
But do you have any particular examples of that? I'm not being sarcastic, The Downward Spiral is a masterpiece, but I'm not an expert, so can't tell those extreme and blatant defiances.
It always baffles me how much people complain that it wasn't their song choice that Rick breaks down. This man is doing this for free to you, people. Geez. It's his channel. Get your own channel, and make your own videos for free. Great work, Rick! Enjoy all the work you put into your videos. Very informative and entertaining. A great channel. Cheers!
When you have a catalog as vast and experimental as NIN, and Rick chooses this cash-in rawk track as the one to break down ... it's a bit disappointing.
I listen to a lot of music, but this song .......dissected like this!!!........ MIND BLOWING!!! So many " hidden " components, what a genius Trent is, and thank you Rick very much.
i used to get woken by text notifications for the live streams which went live at 3am and id have watched the whole thing, then be up at 6 for work, now that job has ended i keep missing the late streams and no work in the morning lol
I wonder how Trent feels about Pretty Hate Machine. Though some may feel its worn out, "Head Like A Hole" is still one of my favorites. The sound of that record is so distinctly, idk, industrial? It takes me to a place that's for sure.
Industrial music is one of my favorite genres. Despite that, Hurt is still my favorite NIN song. It's just so... spooky. It gives me chills every time I listen to it, and that's my favorite kind of music right there. I wish someone could make a song that combines the creepy, slow, chilling, ambient sound of Hurt and the hardcore, angry, energetic, industrial sound of Head Like a Hole.
The Hand that Feeds is my fav song without a doubt but Head like a Hole comes definitely 2nd in line! Different sounding animals, different production but the same NIN mindset.

Trent Reznor is probably one of the last few great artists in music... Every time I listen to one of his albums on a different set of speakers or headphones, I hear something that was buried in there that I never new existed the 150 times before that. Great job! Thank you for choosing Nine Inch Nails. I've never noticed the submarine or space ship sounds before even though I've listened to that song a thousand times. Your series are great Rick! Thanks!
First, I really dig this series; found it a couple months ago. The isolated track breakdowns are great! Second, seeing all the layers in a NIN song? Totally rad, man!! Keep up the great work! Also, ever consider a What Makes This song Great from the Cure or Deftones? Good stuff!
Love this series. I'm a huge NIN fan, and I know Trent layers a lot of sounds into his tracks, but this blew my mind between the crumpling sounds and the vox at the end.
Damn Rick, thanx for these great song breakdowns. Exposes the true genius of some writers. Never noticed all the little sounds and fx buried in the bg of this track, just goes to show how all these little unnoticeable pieces of flair can really drive a song forward and help build momentum while not distracting the listener from the song melodies & performance. Reznor is clearly a mastermind of this technique
YAY! Really hoping you get a chance to do some tracks from the Fragile as well if you circle back to more NIN. Trent's production work is really what got me into music.
Yay awesome! This will definitely be useful to help the band cover a favorite Nine inch nails song. Great work on making a reproduction of the synth sound Rick. This whole episode is great. Thanx!!
Nine Inch Nails has some killer stuff. I love "The Hand that Feeds" but the 1 + 2 punch of "Wish" and "Last" from Broken is hard to beat. The guitar riff at the 0:44 mark of Last is one of my favorite rock riffs of all time.
Me too, then I seen it wasn't a song from Broken, Pretty Hate Machine or The Downward Spiral. Still like With Teeth, but it's tame and nowhere near the earlier albums.
NIN! Yes! Thanks for covering this one, Rick. Lots of hidden sounds in Trent’s arrangements, and you found every last one of them. Well done and thank you!
You really dissect the song perfectly. It may not be his best but definitely is a good one to pick apart. There were parts I never knew where there no it will make me listen more closely. Keep up the great work Rick. ✌🏻
Great video. Thanks Rick. Oftentimes because you’ve done one of these videos, you’ve helped get me interested in bands that I hadn’t checked out before. Also, you have helped me appreciate the “greatness” of songs that up till then had just taken for granted.
Shows what a fantastic song this is. You could make any number of combinations from those separate tracks and still have a massive tune. Those drums are so aggressive. Great job Rick!
I love this song so much! The great thing about NIN is the layering of soundscapes and there’s no better way to examine it than with Beato’s track-by-track analysis.
I think a thing that the Odyssey plug in is missing is how an Arp Odyssey works. It's a duophonic synth, but when you play two notes at once, the two oscillators are split to each note and play independently of each other. It is a sound that is somewhat unique to that particular synthesizer. Great video!!
Rick Beato thanks for responding. I haven't even finished watching the video. You are a guru. I love what Reznor did with Peter Murphy, especially in Boston. Peter Murphy is my favorite singer/songwriter of all time. He has the voice of a thousand.

Christopher Kinnaird - you read me wrong - I’m saying I watched the entire ad because I want him to get the most money he can. Hell, this time I clicked the ad.
If i could add just one thing to RB's great explanation is: To listen to the EQ and Effects changes on the vocals. You can really hear Alan's sweeping of the EQ to make certain words more clear but also gives it such a human touch. Adding and removing FX and sweeping through EQ over the vocals are such an awesome way to make everything sound very ALIVE!
Ha. Immediately when I heard that synth I thought of the Arp 2000 my stepmother owned when I was a kid. It made that exact stepping sequence from a single key stroke. Adjustable for spread and speed.
there’s an acoustic interpretation that a group called “yMusic” that’s just unparalleled; it uses strings and some woodwinds to create a familiar but unsettling backdrop for the lyrics, and really gives them a chance to shine too- a great producer and songwriter too can be found in Trent Reznor
Sometimes I wonder if we’re listening to the same songs as Rick because, in over a decade, I’ve never noticed those digital drums in the background at all
I'm just new to this channel, but I really really appreciate how Rick separates out all the different parts of the song, so I can hear them clearly. Next for me is to learn enough music theory that I can understand some more of what he's saying. When he says "really cool part", I agree, and feel like I'm juuuuuuust about grasping the actual theory parts, but I'm not quite there yet.
At last UA-cam recommends a channel their algorithm knows I'll like but also but I secretly love. Awesome work Rick. I don't care what genre or what artist...this is gold
Wow....I honestly don't like much NIN post-The Fragile....but this breakdown really made me appreciate this song. When I saw the notification for this video I was crossing my fingers you'd be doing "The Perfect Drug" as that is by far my favorite NIN song ever. But I actually really enjoyed you going through this particular song. Now...in a similar vein...may I humbly request you do a Marilyn Manson song!?!? :D Dope Show or IDLTDBTDLM would be great. Or...obviously, The Beautiful People. Thanks for everything Rick!
I thought Year Zero was pretty good. I like Ghost I-IV also but dark ambient is not a very popular style. Interestingly, that's close to the style of music Trent Reznor writes right now for film. I think The Hand That Feeds was chosen because it is a very popular radio track in the US.
Hey, Rick... I’m also a “Rick”, haha. I love your channel, you really seem to know what you’re talking about, and your passion for music is inspiring, letting us, the regular music fan know we’re not alone. Anyway, could you dissect another NINE INCH NAILS song in a future episode? CLOSER would be fantastic, but anything from Trent’s catalog would be great!!! Thanks, man. Take care.
I've never noticed half of the stuff you said, oh my god im shook. i loved nin but all the things you pointed out just ... im mind blown new subscriber right here mah dude

Just trying to defend a righteous dude!
Christopher Kinnaird -No worries man we are all fans here
If i could add just one thing to RB's great explanation is: To listen to the EQ and Effects changes on the vocals. You can really hear Alan's sweeping of the EQ to make certain words more clear but also gives it such a human touch. Adding and removing FX and sweeping through EQ over the vocals are such an awesome way to make everything sound very ALIVE!
I love how he breaks down such a seemingly simple song into its complex parts
Good lord man...you are friggin amazing!
That was the most awesome analysis I think I've ever seen!!
aaaand that's only 1 song... all those crazy details... this album is so good! Filter is up next? :)
Probably my favorite one yet! Thanks again, Rick
Interesting fact: Dave Grohl played the drums on this track.
Bonus, the synth is a Duo-phonic ARP Odyssey MK1!
Ha. Immediately when I heard that synth I thought of the Arp 2000 my stepmother owned when I was a kid. It made that exact stepping sequence from a single key stroke. Adjustable for spread and speed.
Grohl did not play on this track.
It was IIan Ruben on this track, if i remember correctly. Dave olayed on With Teeth. 👍
@@bobthebrush lmfao... WRONG!
Dave did 7 tracks on this album... this is not one of them
This is one of my favorites songs. Thank you so much for this video.
Watching this really makes me appreciate evem more the genius of Trent Reznor.
Rick!!! Love the videos! Always waiting for the next in this series!
there’s an acoustic interpretation that a group called “yMusic” that’s just unparalleled; it uses strings and some woodwinds to create a familiar but unsettling backdrop for the lyrics, and really gives them a chance to shine too-
a great producer and songwriter too can be found in Trent Reznor
Sometimes I wonder if we’re listening to the same songs as Rick because, in over a decade, I’ve never noticed those digital drums in the background at all
I never noticed the cello in Pearl Jam's Jeremy. Until I heard Rick isolate it. Now, I hear it loud and clear.
horseshoe28016 you never heard what now?!
Do depeche mode. Walking in my shoes or stripped
Or anything from Violator. :D
i know its poppy but "Here is The House" is awesome. amen to Walking in my Shoes
The sun and the rainfall
Little 15 or It's No Good
Anything off ‘ Ultra’
Dope Show is dope as hell
I thought Year Zero was pretty good. I like Ghost I-IV also but dark ambient is not a very popular style. Interestingly, that's close to the style of music Trent Reznor writes right now for film. I think The Hand That Feeds was chosen because it is a very popular radio track in the US.
What did you think of Bad Witch? I think it's the best thing he's done since The Fragile
Take care.
Please do CLOSER! Or anything from the Downward Spiral!
I vote for any other song from NIN yes, but maybe not Closer lol bc I'm a hardcore NIN fan. 🖤
I've never noticed half of the stuff you said, oh my god im shook. i loved nin but all the things you pointed out just ... im mind blown
new subscriber right here mah dude
This is an incredible series and the only downside is I have realized that I don’t know anything about music. Oh well it has been worth it.
Thanks Rick! The Hand that feeds is my fav NIN song, it has such a drive and a not-so-much contained rage in the vocals. I discovered layers I wouldn't have thought of 👍
Great stuff, as always, Mr. B. Cheers!
Please also do a track off “The Downward Spiral”.
YES
Great taste on these series, this particular song still sounds fresh now 14 years after its release.
thank you for NIN, my fav. band
Been waiting for this for a while...worth the wait! Thanks for doing this
