      would be better to rephrase to something like "It's oneself's moral obligation to his soul to do what he finds meaningful"
      what you find meaningful doesnt need to be the correct moral/universal law.
      but you still will hate life as long as you won't do what you truly want that gives it any meaning as to any reason to keep going.
      if a person has no meaning he usually gets depressed and kills himself if directly or indirectly. most people dont know the truth but still have enough bs meaning in thier lifes to keep on living.

    One of the most intimidating experiences I've ever had, was actually achieving ambitious goals I set myself. I set them so high I didn't think I could reach them, and when I did, it terrified me.
    Success is frightening. It makes you realise just how much power you have, and therefore how much of your own suffering you are responsible for.
    For reference, I have fought in Afghanistan. This was less terrifying than success.

    This is a rule from his book that still gets misinterpreted a lot and gets strawmanned as "Follow your bliss!" in many UA-cam rebuttals, so I hope this helps to clear that up a bit. I also think that this is one of his most motivating arguments he makes.

    • @dragons_red
      @dragons_red 6 років тому +3

      Bite-sized Philosophy correct, and what is implied in that message is sacrifice. Something meaningful, by Peterson's estimations, is something that will not just benefit you but everyone else now and especially into the future, hence the sacrifice part. Expediency is all about quick fixes, i e short-term gratification.

    • @1pauluzz1
      @1pauluzz1 4 роки тому +1

      @@dragons_red Thanks. I mull over this rule a lot because I (used to) love to make art. The thing is that throughout the years I learned that my art is mostly serving myself and not others (there is plenty of good art out there). It also doesn't generate an income, and it became obvious to me that maintaining my relationship and an income (= responsibilities towards myself, my GF and our shared future) requires significant time and energy, and leaves little room for art. It's still unclear to me whether I should/will be following through on art - that thing that gives me purpose, and, as JBP says it: "creative people who don't create just die" - .. this might be a sacrifice that I need to make, or, on the other hand, I might "die".

    • @eduardocastillo1869
      @eduardocastillo1869 4 роки тому

      @@1pauluzz1 I relate to what you said about art. I also relate to having doubts now and then about pursuing a career in arts, or just dropping it.
      I've heard many philosophers and psychologist talk about creative people and their relation with arts, and they all reckon for us this is an existential NEED. We just have that drive, it is in our DNA and we use it as a mean to letting go off stress and develop as individuals. So I don't think it is a good idea to drop it.
      Then, pursuing a career in Arts is usually tough and you don't always get to make it. So my advice would be to keep it as a hobby. Try to talk to your family and gf and explain to them this is something important for your emotional stability, and that you need to make some time for it. I'm sure they'll understand.
      There's a saying that goes: "Everyone should have 3 hobbies in life: One to keep you fit, One to develop your creativity, One to make you money". Seems a damn good advice to me.
      Hope it helps ;)

In the last two years I earned more money than I could have dreamt of, but, always felt like something missed from me. Watching Mr. Peterson helped me realize that what is meaningful for me was being in the military was being someone that others can rely on me for that is my purpose in life, to lift others. I shall return to my military career and help young joiners be prepared for the life that awaits for them. Most ex or active military people will tell you that they joined not because they had a happy life before or that everything was good for them. Thank you

      Happiness is fleeting and superficial, that's why it is a worthless persuit. You can't be happy all the time, and even if you somehow were you would quickly lose desire for it. We are not wired to be happy all the time. Meaningful is much deeper, it connects you to the past the present in the future, and it's the thing that allows you to bear the pain and suffering that is inevitable in life, as Peterson would roughly put it. It keeps away the bitterness and resentment and makes you feel at with the world fulfilled.

I reliazed that no job will help me, but early retirement takes millions of dollars. But now I'm thinking I can save enough that is equiavalent to my salary +30% and I could have a solid runway of a year to just focus on my business idea. Meanwhile, I can still work and the discipline that I build in waking up early while working will also help me when I hit that monetary savings goal and am able to quit my job. The best part of tis is that my wife supports me planning.

      Depends what it is. For instance, if you want to smoke weed to help alleviate physical pain, then that would improve your life and if you work toward legalizing it for medical purposes, then you will be helping others as well. However, if you just like using it for recreational purposes, then while there's nothing wrong with that on a moral level, it really falls into the category of hobby. It's not exactly the kind of significant, meaningful pursuit to which JP is referring.
