Blessed are the SJWs of Toronto for bringing to the international stage this rare and special mind. I still remember a crowd of rabid Frindgers yelling at him on campus. We may never have heard of this man otherwise. Bless the blue-haired anti-cis warriors!
Tamas Mihaly great comment! Totally agree!
Also a wonderful example of Popper's Law of Unintended Consequences
Tamas Mihaly The Chinese say "you never know what your misfortunes might be good for" in cases like this one.
Yes I’m in Pakistan and listening to this guess. Bless their hearts.
I love your perspective on this...that is practicing true gratitude! They can also be called "intoleristas" hahah
The fact that the carpet is so perfectly in shot, is so satisfying.
now you made me aware of it i will have to keep watching it
I didn't notice it but, oddly enough, you're right. Haha.
So meaningful hahaha
Thank you for this gift
Pity it isn't a nicer carpet.
I like how Peterson manages to distinct himself from his messages.
Thus avoiding creating a cult or gaining merely "Followers" instead of real sorters.
Could you give an example, I'm intrigued? :)
You can watch this ua-cam.com/video/WQ_j9M2lwSM/v-deo.html
But also he always says that these ideas are not his own. And they are indeed not his own.
Even his interpretations are not necessary original - I think that it's just apparently he is the right man (his eloquence and linguistic skills) at the right time.
I agree. One of JP's greatest gift is that he WANTS you to question his ideas, debate it, and think for yourself. You don't always have to agree with him, but most do because he is DAMN RIGHT!!
Can we just give the interviewer a credit? He deserves it, he did it very well, he makes the show goes on. I love both JP and the Interviewer Guy😘😘
The interviewer is Dave Rubin.
One of the most immersive chapters in this book especially because in the audiobook you can hear he gets emotional as he reads the finishing pages.
I have watched A TON of Jordan Peterson videos now, and this one is, truly, the most esoteric, spiritual, and abstract thing I've heard him talk about. Thumbs up if you wish he was your dad.
He is a dad to all of us, just not by blood
RhythmDroid totally totally agree with your sentiments and statement.
He is Amazing, but my dad’s better. 👨🏻
i feel/know that i am in the right place and time, when i actually live according to my values.
That moment that someone feels that things are aligned, is when it corresponds with deeper values. Figure out what your values are, try to put it to action and these moments of meaning will become more and more.
That's a very fucken interesting comment because me too recently, but I've sort of lost grasp of it again - any tips on figuring out those values?
"That's Mercury, the winged messenger of the gods. So you're chasing that, and every now and then you get it, and everyone wins. And that's meaning."
Ah, Dr. Peterson is such a Jungian. That is the Jungian interpretation of the story Hymn to Hermes. Apollo and Hermes represent complementary aspects of personality, Apollo the dominant conscious aspects and Hermes (Mercury) the unconscious repressed aspect. Hermes wants acknowledgement from Apollo and causes trouble, and in the end not only gets acknowledged but also forms an beneficial relationship with Apollo. Apollo integrated his shadow, Hermes (Mercury), and both became better together than apart. Thats what Jungians call individuation. That's meaning. And I like Dr. Peterson's spin on it that when you get it, not only do you win, but everyone around you wins.
Great stuff!
thanks for sharing
He's not a Jungian, he simply separates the wheat from the chaff. Just so happens Jung has a hell of a lot of wheat. Peterson does criticism Jung when necessary and appropriate. It is the case though, that Peterson (and me) are temperamentally inclined towards Jung's work. It's high in Openness.
Yes. Encouraging people to spend more and more time doing what is good, true, beautiful, and meaningful is the foundation of Jordan's work. I can't think of a better game to play in life. 🙂
Watching this clip now, and realized straight off the bat that Dr Peterson has grown in his ability to relay his ideas and thoughts. Not taking anything away from the message at all. Simply an observation that he now he is more controlled in his delivery is and less gesticulate.
This video is the most profound thing i have seen in short 18 years of my life. I felt that many times, but put into words like this is genious, and im glad someone talked about this. The concert thing got me smiling for whatever reason.
I was feeling a bit off and overwhelmed, and had to watch this video today. Finding the meaning, and letting me push through the hurdles!
without meaning, life is death.
more likely because of death there is meaning.
LOL I love his mesg, but more so love his hand gestures, accent, enthusiasm..... really excited love him
I was in a meaningful place watching this. Thank you Peterson!
Im so grateful for this.
I needed this today
I’ve been watching this series, and it has all resonated to some degree. This one though, while resonating like the rest, was also very sad. “The Zone” is a very lonely place. Not alone, but lonely. There are so few people who care, or even acknowledge that excellent and meaning exist, that striving for it is a very lonely prospect.
the passion and the vigor with which he talks
This hour a day of meaning for me is whilst I’m in the gym since it’s aligned with a goal / vision for my self of creating a great physique- additionally every time I eat a protein meal I feel that way too :)
Having moments That are meaningful is a beautiful thing👍
Absolutely Enlightening
Holy shit man! Now that was seriously fucking beautiful those words! Me personally, have always been strongly opposed to the idea that suffering is the most real thing and therefore the ideal precursor to consciousness, though not to say it's completely invalid or useless. But perhaps in order to achieve the highest level of awareness or being, there has to be something more, deeper and more profound than only a deep connection with the body through intense emotions and feeling. Perhaps it's significance, some kind of flow state, a body-mind alignment as Mr. Peterson suggests.
I might be talking out of my ass here, but in my personal experience the manifestations of suffering are mainly when I should be doing something that I know is good for me but I don't. Main cause for this is laziness or finding something of less importance to do right then and there. Another manifestation is when I'm working on a project / some uni work I don't like as much. Even though my work is completed, I don't feel any satisfaction, rather disappointment of lost time that I could have invested in something I really wanted to do or believed in. My suggestion is to try and do things that you think are good for you every day even if for 10 minutes and see if within that period you get that feeling of meaning. If so, try doing it for a longer period of time or find something else that gives you that exact feeling and it may inspire you to transcend this to other stuff. Good luck.
Algore Daemon try vippasana
my favorite chapter in the book thus far.
Watching this right time right place 🙏💪
helping people gives me meaning
FLOW
wise words from Jordan Peterson. I love his book BTW
Time And Relative Dimensions In Space ... makes more sense than I thought it could.
3:53 - meaning is not an idea, it’s a place/flow
4:48
7:45
We need Peterson anime now...
Yes!
“Once you’ve placed, “make the world better” at the top of your value hierarchy, you begin to experience ever deepening meaning.” -JP
In case you were wondering about how to invite meaning to avail itself in your life.
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls it flow (Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience).
I think those moments when everything lines up are like worship, maybe it is worship, maybe not, but it is similar to what we feel in church when we sing together to worship God, or when we agree together about truth.
What actually does it mean for one to incorporate his/ her shadow?
Does this mean that you are aware of you triggers and thoughts, basically?
He's talking about Iron Maiden :)
He's so passionate
Wow, meaning.
Good morning gentlemen,i'm going to leave a question which i believe keeps me behind in my social life and it negatively affects the change of my self as an individual. So:What should i do when nihilism pretty much kicks in with out a particular reason, and literally makes me lose control of my mind? (please answer me this question i had like 3 suicide attempts in less than a year i simply can't afford losing control for once again)
Have a nice positive day :)
This has been the hardest chapter for me... I just couldn’t understand what I was reading
Same
I´ve been stuck for months in this chapter, maybe beacuse it´s the one that adresses one the deepest matters in human existence .
Your advise, insight, and instructions in this video seems strangely similar to the Nagual Juan's, in the book "Power of Silence" by Carlos Castaneda. Jaun speaks of a person being able to "shift" their "assemblage point" in order to cause a "heightened awareness" within themselves. As a teacher (Nagual), Juan was able to push, or force, a student's "assemblage point" in order to cause a "heightened awareness".
He explains that during a period of "heightened awareness", a person's perceptions and clarity of mind becomes extraordinary. Unfortunately, the untrained person will be incapable of remembering the knowledge and understandings gained during their experience.
Only with years of self reflection and practice, can a person begin remembering the revelations and knowledge gained during these events. After years of practice, an initiated person will become skilled at shifting their own "assemblage point" to cause a "heightened awareness".
(I dont know, I felt that it was an interesting simi-parallel concept from a extremely different culture / realities.)
What the fuck is that end song. I NEED IT IN MY LIFE
"MEANING!" *points at coffee table* "YES."- The next time meaning appears to me, thats what I'm going to do.
create equality with the same chairs :)
Anyone else thinking of Bridget Jones and The Edge of Reason?
This one thing I do.
“We’re in time & space. And a place is a place.” :) Brilliant
is the chick with the gun in your outro Kino? from "Kino's Journey"?
Right on!
And what’s the outro music? It sounds very Cocteau Twins influenced.
Something I've been wondering about: would Hitler describe his desires and vision and meaningful? Could he say his life FEELS meaningful because of it? He FEELS _that_ physiological embodiment of meaning? GPT said it couldn't find Hitler explicitly describing his actions as meaningful. Maybe it was lost the the German translation? Maybe he didn't experience that physiological sense of meaning, if not, that's very interesting, if so, that's very interesting.
Then meaning is just a feeling. Are feelings worthwhile? Then why don´t we just get stoned all the time. To be high could be the "realest" meaning you could persue then, the only matter is that it maybe not as "prosocial".
Somebody explain me this chapter !!
This is great and completely agree with his definition and value of meaning. But can't understand how expedience can't be meaningful as well. Under the same terms, can't expedience also put you in the zone? if you are an impulsive person(low self discipline and high excitement seeking) then you will value expedience and doing them can feel meaningful, can it not? Obviously, expedience has to be done in a reasonable manner, otherwise it is easy to see how it can negatively impact your future, but i don't get why meaning can't include expedience. The way the rule is written "pursue what is meaningful not what is expedient" clearly separates them as in what is expedient can't be meaningful. His definition also clearly separates them with notion that meaning is useful for the your present and future while expedience is essentially harming the future. While i do agree with that, can't lets say an hour or so of expedience a day that will also put you in "the zone" be meaninful and not really be so harmful for your future. Why can't meaning include some expedience?
What if you get that flow from video games, and video games ruins your life?
Its deep analysis, i cant understand what the difference between meaningful life vs expedient life ? What meaningful life ?
Damn Jordan has the voice of Bob Odenkirk wtf I just realised
I feel like that when I'm drunk.
What now?
you made clear very quickly why states of being cannot give your life meaning.
Joantiech how did you get there from what he said, curious?
and then u sober up
Being drunk is not Your natural state
The snitch in Harry Potter does resemble the wings of Horus / Ra / the Sun that you can observe above many ancient Egyptian tombs.
I don't know how Rowling figured a lot of things out. She got a download from somewhere.
That "powerful" feeling is probably your brain using ketones to fuel itself as you go deeper intellectually
Really interesting! Can you elaborate?
Sounds like he's talking about flow
are pine trees green at night ?
0:52
I like how his rules are paraphrases of biblical text. He said this one came from the gospel of Thomas.
"The gospel of Thomas"??? What bible is that from?
@@DMRoper1 It's not actually in the Bible but close enough. It has a bunch of sayings about Jesus. But all of his rules seem to align with general ideas found in the bible.
Is that an Hornitos bottle in the back? 🤔
Kairos.
I really hope JK rowling hears 7:20
Guys, that's a state what you talk about. A real state which govern you. Not like fictional state with government created for us.
That what you talk about is real thing... State. You. 🙂
1:15 cause then you're LOST!
Ordo Ab Chao.
When Venus allowed me within Her theater, my re-birth was delivered. And so now to Venus 'I am eternity bound', which doesn't disallow desire, learning, or new experiences, yet Gifted am I irrevocably. Beauty is, when uncommercialized, a profound mystification. Alma Venus
J. K. Rowling didn't figure it out. She had someone or something tell it to her.
i m poopin
And what is meaningful?
So basically the meaning to life is chasing a dragon
Turn off the music
But there is meaning in mundane also
The red chair and blue chair really annoy me. Pick one...
Landon Wilson I KNOW. at least that carpet is on point.
Landon Wilson is good to have choices. Even when you make the wrong one.
Landon Wilson red chairs.
He probably did it on purpose to sit slightly higher than the guest. It's a power move used by people who need such props to try to keep the feeling of control.
I understand what your saying that's fine move out from that but got to have substitute if you don't find anybody who can understand me i don't enjoy for i am totally dependent on love His law i break law to bring law back in heart His grace is sufficient for me word of God i cannot be independent from word of God and have pride in me that's not what I want i go along with it for Little while and i know i can't take it anymore i come back i change to other things so it goes on and on that's what I did then i was in search of love and husband i couldn't find body to come i found grace in Dr Jordan B Peterson so when I lost my trust Holy spirit helped me grace of God Christ and i got my trust back i never gave divorce for God i have peace within me and above me for example Barabas is envy destruction in mouth he was released by people for people enjoy to have artificial intelligence knowledge wisdom covetousness wickedness no love no life people hate Jesus Christ that is faithfulness real fruit of Holy spirit life of tree heavenly language marriage with peace
J.K. has a degree in greek literature and the greek focused on personalities and she had her share of abuse so that's why...
I think JK Rowling “got it” because she belongs to a secret society where she became familiar with alchemy and alchemical symbolism.
J K Rowling never figured anything out. Those books were written by a team of people, all with in depth knowledge of mystery schools, gnosticism and the occult.
What the fuckkkk I understood none of what he saying I watched it 2 times bout to watch it one more time
Meta is he talking about meta?
You cannot do more of 'that.' 'that' is living. How in all mystical realization are you permitted to escape living? Your mortality, on your knees for that allah, allah, allah, is your doorway to the perception of Divine, No, experience of the divine. "Things line up." "Right place, right time." Unfortunately there might be a 'chosen,' or an 'aristos.' The Calvinists come to mind, but they disapprove of matters biology. Okay, I'm lost now, but be 'there' I did, Alma Venus. But they both fall into childish 'movie,' 'concert,' , 'basketball,' when Peterson begins with suffering, tragedy, malevolence. I do not wish to oppose the perceptual value of art as aid towards that which is all around us. But your chance toward immortality can only utilize mythos following your 'arrival'. WTF do I know?
The message is truly amazing. But rule 7 is very boringly written unfortunately! Had to come here to fully grasp it
This guy talks about Harry Potter one too many times for an intellectual. lol
I found rule 7 to be the most boring
wtf is he even talking about
bad interviewer
"I don't know how [J.K. Rowling] figured that out": careful Jordan, just because she is a woman does not mean she does not have talent !
He didn't say J.K Rowling doesn't have a talent to write, are you kidding? He just curious about how J.K Rowling find out the golden ball representation in the Quidditch Game which is very rare people know that (including ton of other male too). He's not talking about gender at all. Be careful with your comment, people can see your stupidity inside it.
